The writer rarely waste a character. A cameo is never a coincidence, as such, the younger of the Tsujikaze bandit brothers return here a more nuanced character. The dead elder brother also makes an appearance in a couple of flashback chapters.

Vagabond Volume 13

Half of this one was a good fight, the other half was Kohei's messed up life story. He's been through some shit.

MY HEART.
Those scenes with Kohei and Rindo man. I’m crying blood. Kohei’s story is one of the best things manga’s had to offer so far. Takehiko Inoue never wastes a character. What a fucking GENIUS.

The god of death. The more i read this, n as much death n shit that it shows, the horrors of the Sengoku period, it's such a calming story. Its as if the art is somewhat meditative

“Death. That's all. That's the only word I know.”

“On this day, countless lives were born, and just as many lives will fade away. It will be the same tomorrow, and the day after that, over and over again. Your life is just one amongst the multitude.”

“You and I are the same. We like to fight. We crave blood. We provoke death. We can't live without fighting.”

“No matter how strong you become. No matter how great you are. We're still connected, aren't we?”

“Now I won't have to fight anymore. I'm through with it, this spiral of death and killing.”

“At twelve, Tsujikage Kohei had firmly decided: life was worthless.”

Matahachi is such a piece of shit. I don't get why he is a main character..he is been useless so far, only tampring with some events that are significant to Takezo here and there. His irrelevant to the direction of the story. I really hopes he dies.

Man, this volume was so good.
I would’ve given it 5 stars but as usual the rape stuff just are a bit too personal for me and makes it harder to read/messes me up for the rest of the day.

My emotions feel violated with grief, loss and suffering over a character that was introduced and killed off in this single volume. A masterful display of emotional storytelling and art design

In this volume, one of past appears. That is Tsujikaze Kohei’s one. He is a person who wants to kill Musashi because of his father.

" There are those who find it necessary to reduce others to nothing in order to validate their own existence... Some people thrive on this feeling..."

Musashi and Shishido Baiken are both sincere assholes, but still assholes. When the fight begun, they both have told Rindo to stay away because they won't hesitate to kill her if she get caught in the range of their swords. This little girl will be alone once again because Takezo awoke the God of Death and took Kohei from her. And he is the only person she has left in this shitty violent world full of killing, abuse, rage and gore. What is she supposed to do? What's left there for her when the man who was like a father to her pushed her away because of the duel and told her he won't hesitate to kill her if Takezo uses her as a shield?

I don't know who had a more shitty life - children in this Vagabond's world or children in Berserk's world... or some children in our world. But what's important here is that they keep fighting.

Kohoi realized something in the heat in this fight and told Musashi - Takezo, I wanted to kill you because you invite bloodshed. Fighting you so many years later, I now understand... you and I are the same. We like to fight. We crave blood. We provoke death. We can't live without fighting. That's why we're drawn to each other! You're just like me. You and I, as far as the rest of the world's concerned, we're worthless. We're just like moths. Look how exited you're getting as you try to analyze the best way to kill me!

Then after the fight Kohoi added - Now... now I won't have to fight anymore. I'm through with it... this spiral of death and killing. I realized in that moment that this man maybe was the God of Death, but beneath that violent and enraged surface, he was just a very tired boy from all that violence, abuse and killing. We'll see later that life didn't spare him, not even a little bit. Maybe that's the reason that he, the God of Death, was raising little Rindo, 'cause he saw himself in her. He saved her life again and got hurt very bad. He even asked Takezo to stop his bleeding, even begged... and all that for Rindo. He, Tsujikaze Kohei, who at the age of twelve had firmly decided that life was worthless.

After this tragic fight, Musashi asked himself would he be able to plead for his life to an opponent who had just cut him down in order to protect someone he cares for. And then he thought of Otsu and Jotari and even asked himself what was this fight for.

This volume was devastating. If I recall right, probably the saddest so far. What a life!

P.S. And you'll witness for a second time how Matahachi will help Takezo not to get hurt. Yes, you've read well. He will help because he wanted to pay him back! But he blew things up again. It's so Matahachi's style!

8/10 Musashi defeats Kohei Tsujikaze by using his dads style of dual wielding. Kohei first matches takezo’s energy in thirsting for bloodshed, but as he is about to die he realizes the connection he made with the little girl and he pleads for Musashi to save his life, and he does but doesn’t understand why. This puts Mushashi into deep thought about how his mindset is and the way people should think. He needs to control his blood lust. Then we get some background story on how basically Kohei’s brother was part of group of bandits. Kohei was taken in by them and had his life saved by his brother. He thought this was the biggest mistake because his life had no meaning to himself. He was almost raped by a crew member and killed him, but then people looked to blame Kohei but then he pointed out the man was erect when he killed him. Then he tried to kill his brother for causing him to live this life full of killing and thieving, his brother locked him away in basically a stone cage with barely any food or resources. After a war waged on their area, their crew was taken out and the enemies looked inside the cage to have kohei come out and murder a bunch of them. He then ran to a fellow survivor of the crew, and asked where he can find and kill his brother and he was informed his brother is dead and was killed by a young man named takezo.

4 Estrellas ☆☆☆☆
Takehiko Inoue , ¡Que grande eres!

Very interesting to learn more about Tsujikaze Kohei. It seems he is a lot like Musashi but rather that he is Musashi if he never got over his own hatred for himself or his family. He still holds on and doesn't overcome the past and the wounds that have shaped him psychologically and due to this he is broken and weighed down and unable to just live for himself and the little girl. This impacts him to duel Musashi and tap into his inner hatred, his past and when doing so Musashi severs him of his connection to his past and his wounds and through that he is seemingly now able to let go and move forward no longer as the God of Death, but now as a human being, as a brother to the little girl he found. Great volume.
