I had no idea the importance of shape-note singing and it's influence. This book gives a clear history of American folk music, it's stars, books, schools, rise, and fall. Since Jackson wrote this book in the 1930's he was speaking not only from first hand experiences with shape-note sings, but also accounts from children and grand-children of the founders of the system. This book really makes me want to implement shape-note singing in our church's youth choir now!

A lot about this book was problematic: the casual racism, the unchallenged assumptions, the obvious biases of the author towards this or that type of music and/or notation. That said, this is a valuable artifact with vivid descriptions of shape note singing and conventions before they got "discovered."
