Pulled out to sea by a rip-tide, Ebony is drowning. Ex-army Corporal, Jay risks his own life to rescue her. But that's just the beginning of her secrets and lies and soon they're both caught up in a fight for their lives.
It's Ebony McAllister's fortieth birthday and desperate to banish the demons haunting her from the past, she dives into the cold water of the Indian Ocean. She's running from the burden of an abusive husband and an abandoned child and drifts through life like a gypsy, never spending too long in one place.
Jay Connolly is surfing nearby and rescues Ebony from the angry water. Retired from the army and carrying physical and mental scars from his time in Afghanistan, he's settled in this coastal town hoping to escape the recurring nightmares. Jay keeps his romantic involvements easy and non-committal, usually with the blonde surfer girls around town, but against his better judgement, he finds himself attracted to this wild, dark woman full of mysteries.
Even though Jay begins to break through the long-sustained walls around Ebony's heart, when she catches a glimpse of a man who reminds her of her violent ex-husband, she knows it's time to move on. Then a young woman comes to her clinic for Reiki treatment and Ebony's life starts to unravel when she realises it's the daughter she left behind twenty-two years ago. Will she stay and face the truth to protect her daughter from her vicious father? Or will she do the only thing she knows to keep her safe? Run away.
Suzanne Cass' small town mystery abounds with danger, desire and suspense, set along the beautiful but wild coastline of Western Australia.
Although this is the second book in a three-part series, it can be read as a stand-alone book. While the characters overlap, each book tells a different, separate story with a happy ever after ending.
Suzanne Cass has always had a fascination with the tough resilience of people who live in our amazing red-dirt outback country. Much of her adolescence was spent working as a jillaroo in the Snowy Mountains, forming her love of lean, enigmatic, cowboy heroes in wild, passionate, dangerous stories. When not writing about the characters that inhabit her head, Suzanne can be found prowling the Perth beaches with her border collie, or yelling from the sidelines as her two sons play sport. Her debut novel, Island Redemption won the Romance Writers of Australia award for best unpublished romance novel of 2016.
SHADOWS IN DEEP BLUE is a superbly written novel filled with danger and suspense as well as romance. Ebony is a woman on the run from her painful past. She never settles in one place for too long, always checking over her shoulder in search of the face she never wants to see again. She fled from her sadistic and abusive ex some twenty plus years ago, and left her infant daughter with a friend to keep her safe. She is now living in a small beach community where she practices Reiki, which is enhanced by her own powers of healing. Jay is ex-military, now surf shop owner, who is fighting his own demons (PTSD). He rescues Ebony from drowning and then again a few days later after she has an accident while learning to surf. They both are immediately attracted to each other but are reluctant to act on it. As the story evolves, strange break-ins, accidents and sightings take place and Ebony and Jay give into their desires. As well, Ebony’s daughter, Jenna, and her husband have suddenly appeared in the same beach community as her mother. Is it coincidence that mother and daughter are in the same place after all these years? Are all these strange incidents connected? What or who is lurking in the shadows? Do Ebony and Jay have a future together? Read this thrilling and engrossing book to discover the answers.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Shadows in Deep Blue is book two in the Colours of the Earth series by Suzanne Cass. Jay Connolly enjoyed surfing when he saw someone in difficulties in the water and dragged her out of the water. One look at her face, Jay knew there was something wrong. However, Jay did not believe Ebony when she said that there was nothing wrong. The readers of Shadows in Deep Blue will continue to follow Jay and Ebony to find out what happens.
Shadows in Deep Blue is the first book I have read in the Colours of the Earth series by Suzanne Cass. Like all the other books by Suzanne Cass, reading Shadows in Deep Blue kept the tradition. I engaged with the plot of Shadows in Deep Blue from the first page. I love Suzanne Cass's portrayal of her characters and how they intertwine throughout this book. Shadows in Deep Blue is well written and research by Suzanne Cass. I like Suzanne Cass's description of Shadows' settings in Deep Blue, which made me feel part of the story.
The readers of Shadows in Deep Blue will learn about the consequences of hypnotising a person. Also, the readers of Shadows in Deep Blue will learn about Reiki.
Shadows in Deep Blue is the fourth book I've read by Suzanne Cass, and may be my favorite so far. Like her other books, it has strong, appealing characters who have genuine fears and troubles, and personal strengths and weaknesses that make them seem so real that you will quickly fall in love with them. The levels of danger and suspence will keep you holding your breath and reading as fast as you can. I loved seeing what happens in the lives of Jenna and Dan from Colors of the Earth Book 1 - this story was a continuation in their life story, but also tied up a lot of loose ends and provided the reader with the backstory, or the rest of the story from her mother's perspective. A perfect balance of romance and suspense, a great intertwining of storylines, and loveable characters you can really bond with. Highly recommended.
Danger and new beginnings. This was great story about second chances and new beginnings. Ebony is haunted by her abusive past, and a decision she felt forced to make regarding her daughter, for so long that she decides to end her life. But as she’s drowning, a man rescues her. Jay has his own violent past and his own demons haunting him, but the two of them make a connection. As their relationship progresses, Ebony’s ex turns up and may harm both her and the daughter she abandoned, forcing her to confront what she’s been running from for so long. Now she has a painful choice to make: build a future or keep herself self. Jay is pulled into this dangerous new world with her. A suspenseful read with some good twists thrown in.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The beginning of the book was intriguing even though even though the insta-attraction was a put-off. Halfway through, though, I got bored. It wasn't so much the writing itself but the predictability. Even the plot was cliche: beaten wide, PTSD ex-soldier, sudden protective instinct after two days. The characters were flat and predictable just like the plot. I forwarded the book and realized that it played out exactly as I expected. Didn't bother finishing it.
What a great read for a rainy afternoon--it had everything I was looking for: action, excitement, romance and a HFN ending.
I love how the author made both MCs have a tough back story, making them need each other to save the day, while still adding a touch of the knight in shining armour trope in for finesse.
I'll be reading more! Bring on those lazy rainy days!
This is a wonderful story to read by a brand new author for me. I have not read anything by this author before this story, it has strong wonderful characters and a wonderful story line, I highly recommend this story to all.
I volunteered to read an advance copy for an honest review
