Oh this was beautiful. Especially the 'Reflection and Contemplation' part. I enjoyed every word, every phrase, every sentence, verse, and poem. Some poems made me cry, others were an inspiration, that one made me young, another one made me old, they took me back to my past while others made see the future, and overall I was happy where I was. We should all read this books.
Ah, Grandma, if it weren't for you I'd be as stupid as the rest of my family. This is a great collection with all the classics. Remember Me was the first poem I ever memorized and Lonely as a Cloud (?) is still one of my favorites. Great intro to poems that still beat the pants off most anything out there.
This compilation of poems is a wonderful addition to the shelf of anyone who loves poetry. Hazel Felleman has filled this volume with poems and prose of various styles from pieces that tell a story or ballad, humorous pieces that will make you laugh, to musings on grand themes like love, friendship, death, the turning of the seasons. Each section is filled to the brim with poems that will become your favorites. Some offering comfort in times of trouble, recollections of childhood, and the bittersweet musings on growing older.
Whether you are just dipping your toes into the deep waters of poetry, or if you are well versed in verse, there is something here for you. Felleman did a wonderful job on this compendium and it's worth your time to pick it up.
Worth a 4 rating if for no reason other than it lives up to the first paragraph on the inside cover sleeve which stated: "Here is a fine, thoughtful selection of poems that live forever in our minds and hearts." Even if you read all of the poems you are never finished because you find yourself rereading some of them as you continue your progress through the book. This book has a very wide range of poets that most will recognize and a few that may be new to the reader. At any rate I enjoyed and will continue to enjoy reading some of these poems if for no other reason than I find them warming and with some of them they bring back fond memories. Highly recommend to all readers, even to those that poetry makes them cringe. Enjoy and have a blessed day.
An excellent anthology of poems, organized into 14 categories: Stories and Ballads; Love; Friendship; Home and Family; Patriotism and War; Humor, Nonsense and Whimsey; The Ages of Man; Death; Reflection and Contemplation; Faith and Inspiration; Nature's People; The Seasons; Dawn and Dusk; and Familiar and Varied Themes. Includes poems of many well-known poets, such as Emily Dickinson, William B. Yeats, Shakespeare, Robert Burns, Ogden Nash, Stephen Vincent Benet, John Keats, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Langston Hughes, and many more.
I grew up with this anthology in my house and it was my first serious introduction to poetry. It contains many of the most accessible poems of the most popular poets over the last three or four centuries - "poems that live" indeed. Had I stumbled upon a more academic or less populist selection at such an age, I might never have developed the love for poetry that I did. In those days, I must have read "The Highwayman" aloud a dozen times. This is still probably my favorite anthology of poetry to date, and I continue to pick it up from time to time.
This is a great collection of poems. Well worth having in your home library! I keep it on my bedside table and read one or two poems a night. I always find new meaning or relevance based on what is going on in my life. Simply a great collection.
