Estos artículos que V. I. Lenin consagró a Tolstoi, uno en 1908, en el ochenta aniversario del autor de Guerra y Paz, y los otros con motivo de su fallecimiento, constituyen un conjunto único en la crítica marxista. Como ha dicho el crítico francés, Jean Freville: "Lenin buscaba con ardor, en la literatura, la expresión de la realidad, de esta realidad revolucionaria rusa que él sintiera de manera tan penetrante y que encarnó en horas decisivas. Entre los novelistas contemporáneos de la revolución de 905, son Tolstoi y Gorki quienes atraen y mantienen, porque representaban más fielmente que nadie a las dos clases revolucionarias, a las dos fuerzas motrices de la revolución rusa: el campesinado y el proletariado. Para Lenin, lo que caracteriza la obra de Tolstoi, es que refleja la psicología del campesino ruso con todas sus contradicciones. Lenin no separa en Tolstoi, al artista del pensador. La simplicidad del campesino se vuelve a encontrar en el realismo del escritor. La revuelta de los campesinos y su apatía, sus odios y sus desesperaciones se prolongan en la ideología del profeta de Iasnaia Poliana".
En el cincuenta aniversario de la muerte de Tolstoi, la Editorial Futuro ha considerado de suma importancia incorporar en su colección Eurindia estos trabajos de Lenin. Ha creído también de interés para el público argentino y latinoamericano precederlos por la nota que sobre estos trabajos publicara el notable pensador argentino Aníbal Ponce en la revista Dialéctica (abril 1936) por él dirigida.

Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known as Vladimir Lenin, was a Russian revolutionary, leader of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (Bolsheviks), statesman and political theorist. After the October Revolution he served as the first and founding head of government of Soviet Russia from 1917 until his death in 1924 and of the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death in 1924.

Consisting of a short collection of articles by Lenin on the life and work of Leo Tolstoy, Lenin's writings here contain a double value. On the one hand, they are the greatest explanation of Tolstoy's classic work from the perspective of Marxism, but, on the other hand, through his method of analysis, Lenin provides a brilliant example of literary criticism when taken into hand with dialectical and historical materialism and, by extension, how we Marxists in the present day should analyse the great writers of past epochs, from when capitalism played a progressive role like Victor Hugo and Mark Twain, from the pre-capitalist fight against feudalism, and so on. Lenin's method found in these pages can be well-applied to the study of the great classic writers of history and the incite offered in how communsists today should appraise their works is of great value on the cultural front, especially combating the onslaught of degenerating bourgeois culture that comes with capitalism having outlived its historically progressive period and the offensive of cosmopolitanism employed by the bourgeoisie in an effort to disarm the proletariat and compel them into passivity and war.

Bueno, queda súper claro que Tolstoi no era muy apreciado por Lenin. Lo acusa de doble moral al apoyar la revolución proletaria, y lo cree incapaz de comprenderla...
