The thing is... this book could've been good. But there's the lack of depth and character development, but most importantly lack of relationship development. They just apparently had a connection and then they were in love? The vampires felt weak, specially considering a human hunter managed to be an equal in a fight with a vampire, even winning the fight. I got a complete Twilight pregnancy vibe. And why wasn't Henry more... shocked over the pregnancy? This book was weird, and the timeline was too short and I felt no connection to any of the characters, and then Henry becomes the true leader of the Carraway vampire clan? What?! Nothing made sense to me.
I think that the story didn't work because of 1) Insta-love. 2) I felt like we were from the outside looking in. 3) No development. 4) No alpha males. 5) The vampires were weak and not powerful monsters/bad boys at all. 6) There was nothing special about any of the characters. 7) No one felt sexy, hot or attractive to me. Not even the sex scene(s). Overall, the story, the character, the plot (where was the plot btw?)... nothing of it worked for me. It's hugely important to me to connect with at least one of the characters, but I felt nothing here. I mean, apparently the Carraways were the vampire mafia, yet none of the felt badass at all.
The Characters:
→ Henry, (19, turns 20), a Catholic human: he believes that being a vampire would be a one-way ticket to Hell.
→ Lyle Carraway (?), a vampire and love interest to Henry.
→ Cian ‘Gray Suit’ (25?), and his dead wife Stephanie ‘Steph’ Thomas, who Nikolai ordered to be killed. They are hunters: they kill supernaturals. Mostly vampires.
→ Ash ‘Sapphire’, Steph's sister.
→ Dustin and Mike, Henry's brothers.
→ Coraline ‘Cora’ Carraway, Lyle's sister, and the vampire Sapphire tortured and Henry tried to help only to be staked accidentally by Cian: Henry took the stake that was meant for Cora.
→ Vincent, a vampire guard for the Carraway family?
→ Nikolai Carraway, Lyle's father and the head of the family - like mafia. All vampires in the Carraway family line are capable of compulsion.
→ Fiona Mills, one of the oldest vampires in the family.
→ Beatrice, Lina and Adam, vampires.
→ Elizabeth Carraway, Lyle and Cora's mother who killed herself because she believed her family were monsters?

Lord...I am having shit luck with books lately. I wanted to like this but it just didn't do it for me. For one thing, there is zero chemistry or relationship development between Henry and Lyle. I mean, shit, they don't even spend much time together to even develop a relationship. There's other stuff going on with the hunters, the kidnapping and family drama. Plus, with Lyle just skipping out for a couple of weeks, there really wasn't any page time for just the two of them to, I don't know, talk? Henry spends a lot of time with Cora. He even spends time with Nikolai but very little with Lyle. Then it's "Oh! We're having a baby. Let's get married because we're in love." The romance was definitely missing.
I'm all for insta-love. I adore it in mate stories. But usually there's some connection...a pull to each other and it's on page. Not "behind the scenes" so to speak which is how it felt here. One minute Henry is still clinging to his religion and determined not to turn. And the next he's claiming to be in love with Lyle. But why? I never got to see it.
I adored Henry. I felt bad for him at times thinking he couldn't possibly be anything that Lyle was interested in. We don't get Lyle's POV and I really think this could have benefited from having it. Lyle was so one dimensional to me. He was a bit of an ass. But we never really find out what makes him tick.

Should have listened to my peers and started reading L.C. Davis sooner! 😁 What a fun and entertaining read. ❤️ I was not having such a good day and needed that fluffy, sexy read and I loved the love story between a geek and a vampire prince. 😉 And kudos to a including a butt cherry virgin. I never get enough of that alpha caveman possessiveness and shy, innocent, virginal omegas. 😜 And the conflict and the storyline of this little book was interesting too. A bit “twilight”y in the middle but it was so fun that I can definitely look past it. 😌 Already reading the second book so you can see how much I enjoyed this one. 😉

I’m super happy that LC Davis is back with a new series - and this one focusing on vampires! I feel like we don’t see as much vampire mpreg so I was looking forward to this one.
For the most part, I thought that this was a solid start to a new book and the first in a new series, I believe. Henry falls into the world of vampires when he saves the life of one, Coraline, at a party. He’s taken to her family home since he knows what they are and can now be used against them. There, he meets Lyle and although he wants to resist and doesn’t want to become a vampire, his love for Lyle ultimately has him rethinking what he first thought about vampires.
I enjoyed this story...some romance, some danger, some vampires being bad asses, hunters out to get the vampires, and of course let’s throw in some mpreg!
I did feel like some things were a bit...choppy? The world building wasn’t totally there for me, or it seemed inconsistent? (If vampires become alpha, beta, omega when they are turned, that’s fine. But I need reasons why Henry was exception to that.) Also, Henry’s religion and reasons for not wanting to be a vampire seemed kinda like thrown in just to give some sort of conflict.
I look forward to more vampires from LC Davis! They’re still my favorite supernatural creature and I’d love more in the world of mpreg!

I am a huge fan of LC Davis and will always try one of their books. I also enjoy a good vampire story, toss in mpreg and i am IN. This story was about what i expected since it's short, which means it was well written with a good plot, but nothing deep or world changing. The relationship between the MCs starts off rough and i don't know exactly when it changed to real love and wanting to be together because they wanted to, but it was nice to see them together. The side characters seemed to be filler which eh, but they helped move the plot along.
Overall i enjoyed this and would recommend to thise who aren't expecting anything new in vampire romanve, and aren't afraid of mpreg.
The narration...wow. i very much enjoyed this narrator and will listen to him again. JJ got the emotions of the characters and when action was happening his voice showed the urgency or tension or passion. I definitely recommend this narrator.

Well, that was an interesting take on the ABO genre.
I've only read one other with the Vampire distinction, and like that one was the details are fuzzy on the whys and hows. At least here we get a reasonable excuse: All their information was gathered from a sample set too small to account for possible variation. Props for Science!
LOVED that Henry wasn't what most would call ideal, and that Lyle was attracted to someone society would deem as less than perfect. Also appreciated that there wasn't a lot of story spent with Henry angsting too much about it either. Henry had a lot of heart, and was quite funny in unexpected ways. And I adored how the author made Lyle so vulnerable and so human when he opened up to Henry about his mother.
One thing that I thought would get a bit annoying - Henry's Catholicism repeatedly used to repudiate all things Vampire - actually wasn't all that insufferable. There were a few instances of decision making that seemed pigeon-holed into fitting religious beliefs, but could be handwaved away if were framed in a more spiritual mindset rather than adhering to dogma.
I think what kept this from rating slightly higher (for me) were a handful of inconsistencies that threw me out of the story...and that, for once, I think I was more interested in the het side characters & their tragic love.

This book was pretty flat and had little plot but it was enough to get me to at least finish the story. Although, by the end I was more interested in Cora and Cain’s relationship outcome than the main couple. It was flat in a way where a lot was written but nothing really explained, if you know what I mean...

I adore LC Davis and am a little gutted that this vampire story is a stand-alone and not any part of a series. It does have interesting elements I wish we could have explored. I do love Henry though. He is just so adorable. Hearts all around!
The flow of the story was a bit choppy. I mean, whole chunks were missing and for all the good bones is has, it could have made an awesome lengthy novel if it were fleshed out a little further.

I received this book of my own free will for an honest review.
This one was actually pretty fun, it began chaotically but it evolved into so much more, Henry was such a sweetheart really, trying to understand everything.
The conflicts between vampires and hunters are as old as vampires tales but the twist with this one was pretty nice actually.
By the end of the story I was so happy and wanting more of Leo and Henry love story that I would actually try to get the other ones, they're interesting in their own way.

A bit boring!
The passion between Henry and Lyle was seriously lacking! I could not feel any kind hot fire lust between them! It was a bit boring! I found myself skipping pages trying to get to the good part!

I really enjoyed this story. I liked that Henry wasn't the typical gorgeous character that the hero falls for and I liked that he had second thoughts about being with Lyle forever. Lyle was a typical brooding vampire, but there were surprises to his personality (and the story) too. This book is a reread for me.

Not bad
Mate stories are one of my favorites. Werewolves, vampires, shifters, and such. This was a great love story. I enjoyed the characters and their personalities. I had a difficult time getting past some inconsistencies with the story line, some editing mistakes, and some errors in the Audible reading. That is the main reason why I gave it only three stars. Overall, as my title says, not bad!

The relationship development was so choppy that it wasn't that credible. The sex was just meh and had a MF vibe. The story was slow moving and became boring. DNF @69%.

When I saw this book, I was immediately intrigued. I love paranormal characters and I have come to appreciate a good mpreg book. I also haven't read anything by this author or listened to this narrator. A small part of me was wary. But I also love checking out new authors so I was happy to get a copy of this audio and review it.
The narration in this audiobook was good. The narrators voice was pleasant and there were little variations between the characters voices. I only wish that there was a little bit more emoting. There was one error in the book where a character is called the wrong name, and it did take me out of the story. All in all, I did like the narration and would listen to the narrator again.
What's great about paranormal stories is that the world is the author's to create. I did like the setting created in this book. Unbeknownst to human beings, there are also paranormal beings living in the same world. This book focuses on vampires, who are currently feuding with hunters. It is not that uncommon of a trope in a vampire novel, but this author has made it different by adding that when a vampire is made, there are possibilities for the vamp to become an alpha or an omega, and be able to carry babies. Also, there is a mythology in this book about the effect of drinking a vampire's blood and the choices to be made after. I did find it interesting for sure.
Henry is a pretty typical character in a mm romance novel. He is a young gay man who has been ostracized by his family for being gay. He is trying to figure out what to do with his life and ends up working as waitstaff for a party but he doesn't know they are all vampires. Henry is pretty pure of heart and hasn't explored his sexuality because of his Catholic Faith. It makes him an interesting character that he keeps his innocence after being thrown out instead of letting anger or depression harden him. Even so, he can't resist the temptation that Lyle presents to him.
When Henry is fatally wounded saving a high ranking female vampire from hunters, her brother saves Henry's life by giving him blood. Henry has to choose to become a vampire or die so no one can get their hands on his blood. I think that is what makes him decide to become involved with Lyle. At this point he can't die without experiencing passion and if he becomes a vampire, he'll be sucking human blood. Either way, there's nothing to lose.
There are parts of me that feel like I really didn't know Lyle by the end of this book. There is some back story of his life discussed. His mother ended her life in a choice like the one Henry has to make. Lyle feels that she wanted to die rather than see her children become monsters (vampires). Knowing he believes that makes me feel for him so much, like he must have felt guilt and maybe repulsion at himself for being who he was born to be. That may be a parallel with how gay people feel when their parents aren't supportive of them, too. But still as much as I felt for him or that it might explain why he is kind of closed off, I feel like this is the only thing I know about him and I wish his character had been developed a little bit more.
So it's good that in this universe males can become omegas and carry children because Henry definitely seems to want them. It was just one of the many things that plagued him about being gay. There is a moment that felt very much like a moment in Breaking Dawn (Twilight). And that's not to say that I dislike the Twilight series, because at the time they came out, I loved them hard. It was just kind of an eye roll at the similarity.
I don't want it to seem like I didn't like this book, because it was good. There is some tension and the violence amps up between the hunters and the vampires. It helps Henry figure out what he wants to do regarding his life or death choices. It also brings a match for Lyle's sister and alliances that I think will help in the ongoing battles. I think the fight between the different types of beings will continue into the future books in the series. I haven't checked them out yet, but I definitely want to.

Even so, he can't resist the temptation that Lyle presents to him.
When Henry is fatally wounded saving a high ranking female vampire from hunters, her brother saves Henry's life by giving him blood. Henry has to choose to become a vampire or die so no one can get their hands on his blood. I think that is what makes him decide to become involved with Lyle. At this point he can't die without experiencing passion and if he becomes a vampire, he'll be sucking human blood. Either way, there's nothing to lose.
There are parts of me that feel like I really didn't know Lyle by the end of this book. There is some back story of his life discussed. His mother ended her life in a choice like the one Henry has to make. Lyle feels that she wanted to die rather than see her children become monsters (vampires). Knowing he believes that makes me feel for him so much, like he must have felt guilt and maybe repulsion at himself for being who he was born to be. That may be a parallel with how gay people feel when their parents aren't supportive of them, too. But still as much as I felt for him or that it might explain why he is kind of closed off, I feel like this is the only thing I know about him and I wish his character had been developed a little bit more.
So it's good that in this universe males can become omegas and carry children because Henry definitely seems to want them. It was just one of the many things that plagued him about being gay. There is a moment that felt very much like a moment in Breaking Dawn (Twilight). And that's not to say that I dislike the Twilight series, because at the time they came out, I loved them hard. It was just kind of an eye roll at the similarity.
I don't want it to seem like I didn't like this book, because it was good. There is some tension and the violence amps up between the hunters and the vampires. It helps Henry figure out what he wants to do regarding his life or death choices. It also brings a match for Lyle's sister and alliances that I think will help in the ongoing battles. I think the fight between the different types of beings will continue into the future books in the series. I haven't checked them out yet, but I definitely want to.

Henry is a college student on his own since his family disowned him for being gay. He's Catholic and has a very strong faith, even though he's had a somewhat sad life. Working as a waiter isn't all that easy for someone who's as clumsy as him but it's paying the bills.
Lyle is a vampire in the Carraway family. They run the vampire race and keep everyone in line, so there's no mass murder or crimes to bring their race into detection. He's not that emotional and kind of closed off due to losing his mother.
Henry pulls a crazy, courageous stunt that ends up saving Lyle's sister Cora. Lyle has come to save Cora and barely makes it in time to save both Cora and Henry. Henry is given the option to turn to a vampire or die to keep their secrets. Henry being the good Catholic he is says no. Lyle decides to give Henry a month to get to know them and maybe change his mind. In this month Henry and Lyle get closer and start a sexual relationship. Later when Lyle is off on a business trip Cora decides to take Henry out for some fun, which leads to all kinds of secrets coming out and a lot of trouble.
This is a pretty good vampire story that I really wished was longer. I wanted Henry and Lyle to have more alone time and get closer emotionally. I didn't feel like they had a true connection until the book was almost over and it was a little rushed. I also didn't like the procedure used for ending Henry's human life and starting his vampire life, it felt too violent for me. Overall I think this is a good short story and would recommend it to others.

This is my first vampire mpreg and first LC Davis book. I am a huge fan of mpreg and really enjoyed this take on it.
There are a few world building loose ends - like why can’t Lyle mind control Henry? I was shocked when Henry’s religion comes up. That was a nice touch. But what happened to the rosary? It was important enough to have in his pocket so why doesn’t it appear later? So some of the questions and conflict weren’t carried through consistently.
So while there were those questions I had above, I totally enjoyed this saga. Everything takes place in a short period of time, like less than a year, and boy do you get a story. Vampire hunters and abduction and rescues and babies and family and so much more. L.C. did a fabulous job balancing all of that while giving us a sweet story.
The audiobook narration was pretty good. J.J. Jenness captures Henry’s ingenue qualities without being smarmy. This is definitely a performance and not just a reading so it really highlights that Henry and Coraline aren’t whiny babies because it could so easily have gone there.
Overall it’s a low angst, generally fluffy, feel-good romance with vampire hunters and a husky virgin in the middle of it.

This was very different from what I have come to expect from ABO stories. In fact, we don't even learn about the ABO dynamics until pretty far into the book.
However, it was great seeing a normal, not perfect, human as a MC. I understand that most stories have an MC that has some sort of traumatic past; but, Henry faces real life insecurities. Then, out of the goodness of his broke, student loan, rent owing heart, he saves the life of a woman...who turns out to be a vampire.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, this begins a time of learning for Henry. When Lyle gives him blood to save his life, he is forced to make a choice. The story's world building gives insight into the lives and politics of one of the most powerful vampire families in the world. It also helps the reader understand why the opposition came be, and how they are run.
This is a vampire/human/omega mpreg story that teaches the MCs and secondary characters that overcoming old prejudices is not a sign of weakness. That times change, and miracles can happen. I really enjoyed this book, and I think you will, too. Just go in with an open mind. This is not your typical omegaverse book, but it is a good one.
