In Not So Gone, Charles Levin's second novel in the Sam Sunborn series, we find our protagonist, Sam Sunborn, living digitally after he and his Digital 3000 partner, Frank Einstein, were murdered by a terrorist group led by The Leopard. This terrorist group has lofty plans, and the world itself is in jeopardy. The powers that be are onto this group's nefarious plans, but they are always a few steps behind.

Digital 3000 digitized personalities, memories and emotions to the cloud, which was fortunate for Sam and Frank. They are "living" inside the web, which is almost like a super power, but is also restrictive -- no physical pleasures or senses/sensations. They can Skype with their loved ones and watch over them, but there is always that barrier. They also have insider information about the terrorists, which can be helpful, but only to a certain point.

When Sam's son Evan is kidnapped by The Cub, the younger brother of The Leopard, he is desperate to find a physical body to download into. Inhabiting the cloud gives him instantaneous access to information, but not the ability to take real world action. Sam and his compatriots find a man on the edge of death, a crazed murderer named Valiente jailed in Mexico, who seems the perfect candidate for their plan. They decide to liberate Valiente and download Sam into his brain. As you can imagine, personalities and memories clash while Sam tries to adapt to his "new" body and his reincarnation as a living, breathing human.

In my opinion, there were too many characters to keep up with or to develop fully, and the plot held too many sub-plots to do justice to any one of them. But overall a few strong threads kept me interested, and the charge toward the resolution of all the different story lines was exciting.

I was given the Audible version of this book in exchange for an honest review. The narrator, Daniel Greenberg, does a great job with novel, smoothing some rather awkward wording and unrealistic conversation so it flows better than it might on the page.

Full disclosure- I was NOT given a free copy of this book to review. I loved the first book in the series, and I heard the third book was being released so I purchased this one since I like to read a book series in order. Having said that...

If you like fast paced, hold onto your hat action, this techno thriller series is for you. As in the first book, Not So Dead, the author leads the reader on a non-stop ride that is so full of action I felt like I was watching a movie. And if the action isn’t enough, the author throws in little tid bits of info that had me clicking over to Wikipedia to read more about the elephant stampede that wasn’t and the casino that got hacked through a fish tank, among other things. All in all this is a great read and I can’t wait to see all of the characters again in the next installment.

Sequel…carrying on where the original left off
~First, I’ll state that I received this book as a gift from the author to read and review.
~I read the first book, “Not So Dead” and it was great…when I heard that there was a sequel, I wanted to read it, but I did have a concern. The first book as so exciting, with non-stop action and intricate schemes, great characters, and it was a complete story in itself. What did that leave to write about in a second book? MORE ACTION in yet another very complex plot!
~All the old favorites are there…heroes and villains. I guess it is true what they say…‘in Sci-fi no one is really dead.’
~The synopsis tells us that one of the terrorist masterminds from the first book is back to carry out a plan of mass destruction. Yeah, I’d forgot that it was implied that he escaped capture in the last few pages of book one. And thus, the adventure begins.
~This book has elements of international mystery, local crime, extremely complex planning by both the good and the bad guys. We learn a little bit more about the backstories of the characters involved…this is good because we, the reader, become invested in them and root for them, so when someone (no names / no spoiler here) is unexpectedly killed by a sniper it comes as a surprise. The death fits right in with the story line…this is a dangerous life, real people die, so do characters in books.
~The synopsis tells us that Sam Sunborn is forced to come back from the dead, that is one of the more interesting Sci-fi concepts in this book. Now I don’t do spoilers, so I cannot tell you how Sam is brought back…but, I can tell you that this brings up a whole new moral and ethical set of questions that need to be dealt with. Once again, Sam becomes a very interesting main character. I remember being so surprised (though I shouldn’t have been) when it is revealed at the end of Not So Dead that Sam is indeed dead. This time, while Sam is back…stronger than ever…there are some issues.
~I highly recommend this book to any Mystery, Sci-fi, or Action story lovers. I am not sure what author Charles Levin has in store for us next…but I am looking forward to it.

An Excellent Thriller!

I really enjoyed this book! It had non stop twists and turns that kept me on edge. The characters are amazing and full of surprises. The plot is so clever. I was happy and sad at the ending. The author has quite the imagination. I will be looking forward to more books from this author.

Very interesting concept to this story. I haven't read/listened to the previous book, which actually might be a good idea since the reader would get some information that could explain the underlining plot line.

The book starts out with two men who end up being virtual entities, basically floating around in cyberspace. One of the men seems perfectly happy to be there, content with his lot in life, and the other wants to be flesh and blood again. Seems he was killed in the first book (sorry for the spoilers). He copes by Skyping with his wife and son ala Max Headroom style technology, so is somewhat able to live life. It is while he is watching his son at a sports game that things go wrong.

What I find really interesting in this plot idea is elapsed time. I had a dream the other night which seemed to last a lot longer than the time period in which I was asleep, and it got me to thinking about whether or not someone could figure out how much time passes in the dream time - the actual time lapse in the dream. Then of course, it got me thinking about the time lapse if someone was only alive in cyberspace. How do Frank and Sam adjust to that timelessness?

A terrorist called the Leopard was killed by Sam and now his brother, nicknamed 'the Cub', is following in his brother's footsteps and out for revenge. He kidnaps Sam's son in order to stop Sam from interfering in his plans for world domination.

Frantic, Sam and his fellow cyber mate decide to try the reversal of the operation that saved their 'lives' in the first place and put their conscience into cyberspace originally. They travel to Mexico and transfer Sam's conscience into a man in an insane asylum. Once Sam is back to being human again, they all return home and Sam sets about trying to help find his son.

There's quite a variety of characters in the book, most seem to have been from the first book as well. There are FBI agents who are helping track down Evan (the son), as well as trying to a) find The Cub, and b) stop the Cub in whatever it is he is trying to do. Then there are the Cub's minions, those he uses to try and stay out of sight himself.

This is quite a different plot, with a definite twist to it, which I found quite intriguing.

kindle unlimited, had read the previous book but didn't realize this one was out, but at least it was on ku {know that's a problem for some writers due to all sorts of things including having to be exclusive to amazon} and once again, must say...already owned the first one somehow then realized hadn't read/reviewed it yet on amazon/goodreads, books get lost in the shuffle, interesting take on things, the back and forth and is it/isn't it, but no spoilers so just read to find out, yes again, hate giving spoilers, so this time...it's bad, good, better, but not quite right...and could see those things happening except the one that can't happen {at least not yet}. Goes in my hmmm pile of things to think about {and no, that's not a bad thing, more to haven't quite come across this type before and not even sure of genre, as if that ever made a differerence to me}.

My review is of the audio version of the book. I received a ARC copy to review. What follows is an honest review.

30 Seconds Into the Future

Not So Gone picks up where Not So Dead left off. It is a few month later that the first story. You do not need to have read the first one as you are quickly brought up to speed with the important details of the first book. What follows could be spoilers for the first book so if you have not read it you should most likely stop this review now.

As I said it is few months later, and Frank Einstien and Sam Sunborn are living out their lives in the digital cloud. The rest of the team are doing their jobs, and living their lives. The Cub, the brother of the first book's villain, is trying to pick up where he left off with a multi-phase attack of destroying the food supply of the world. To keep Sam and Frank from interfering he kidnaps Sam's son. Mom is freaking out and Sam is left powerless, or is he.

Meanwhile Rich Little, head of Homeland Security, and assistant Michelle, have figured out there is another problem happening, the one that Sam has been taken out of.

Very good story. Mr. Levin has put some turns and twist in the story that I did not see coming. Just when you think things will be OK, the rug gets pulled out from under you.

While the first story sort of set up for a second story, this one clearly does.

Young children should not read, too much violence. Pre-teens and teens, parents might want to read first. If you love a good suspense story, this is one you will enjoy.

Not So Gone is a gripping techno thriller that deals with artificial intelligence, virtual reality, terrorism, and threats to millions of people. Charles Levin did a great job in plotting this book, developing the characters, and having a realistic threat, plus vivid imagery. Without giving away spoilers, he was ingenious with his target, as it impacts millions. I really enjoyed this book and thought that Daniel Greenberg performed the story perfectly. He gave the various characters distinguishable voices, and added the right emotions. Parts of the story were unbelievable, while other aspects were terrifying. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. I will definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator in the future. This book is a standalone listen, yet has references to the book Not So Dead by Charles Levin. I loved the ending of this book too!

Threats in Two Fronts Threaten our Hero

Not So Gone is the sequel to the first San Sunborn novel Not So Dead. Many of the main characters return for more adventure. After the first terrorist was dispatched, his brother survives to again challenge the US. This book is much more fast paced and there are many twists and turns and I had a harder time following along. Sam's family is out in jeopardy and he has to come up with a novel way to help save his family and stop the terrorists. So much was added this time it was difficult for me to keep track of all the players. Besides the novel twist that I won't spoil, there wasn't as much computer tech as there was last time. What there was had moral and ethical challenges which were explored a bit. Daniel Greenburg returned to narrate this book as well and he did another fine job on this Whispersync version.

The futuristic technological aspects of the book are not something which would generally attract my interest. But, I decided to take a chance.

The story line is well developed and flows beautifully. The characters have a great deal of depth and relatability. The author does an excellent job of creating relationships between the characters. The research into the technological features and into police/security procedure was obviously detailed and carefully integrated into the story.

The book was a pleasant surprise. The author does an amazing job of drawing you into the relationships as well as the suspense. I am looking forward to reading the next installment of this series.

If you enjoy reading about fighting potential terrorist threats, and futuristic technology, this book is a must!

This second episode int the Sam Sanborne series follows Sam, Frank, Rich, and Michelle as wells as several other characters in pursuit of the Leopard’s operation. If you have read/listened to the first story in the series you may be saying, Sam Is dead, how can this occur. Well grab a copy and settle in to see how Frank brings Sam back to the physical dimension. There came a point in this story where the author took a direction with a few characters that had me angry with him. But that’s my issue to overcome and I won’t say any more about it to avoid providing any spoilers. This review is based on listening to the Not So Dead Trilogy audiobook. Daniel Greenberg does an excellent job bringing the characters and story to life through his narration.

I’m impressed! A fast paced thriller with lots of action. There is some violence but it was a necessary part of the storyline. I could definitely see the technology described as something that could easily come into play in the future.

Daniel Greenberg’s narration was spot on! The perfect voice for this story.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

Sam Sanborn is living in a cloud, not the white puffy kind but a virtual kind. When a terrorist kidnaps his son, he has his friends upload his virtual self into a borrowed body. Talk about multiple personalities. He teams up with others to stop this terrorist who is always one step ahead of them. This is one rollercoaster of a story never knowing what will happen. It will definitely keep your attention. I received a complimentary audio and this review is voluntary.

Not So Gone by Charles Levin is actually the second book in the series (I hope there will be more). This one is even better than the first. Very creative techno-thriller. Levin tells us that all the technologies in the book, but one, actually exist now. In fact, Levin gives references at the end of the book for further reading. Pretty amazing!

I was given a copy of this great book by the author. I have voluntarily posted this honest review.

This book is a continuation of the Not so Dead series. It's fast paced, lots of action. I read the third book first, then the first and lastly this book. It's an intriguing story. I definitely recommend this series. Although you can read them in any order, it's definitely best to read them starting with the first.

There's a lot going on and it's mind boggling. Not for young readers.

I listened to the audio version and the narrator did a great job.

NOT SO GONE: A Sam Sunborn Novel (Sam Sunborn, #2), my second read from author Charles Levin. An enjoyable 467-page/10-hour 35-minute high-powered techno-thriller. ” I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author. Next up, NOT SO DONE: A Sam Sunborn Novel (Sam Sunborn, #3). Sam Sunborn is dead, but that will not deter him from stopping a terrorist attack. After taking up residence in a different body, Sam must find his son and save not only him but the entire world. Charles Levin uses his expertise to craft a superb novel.

Sam and Frank are alive and well in Cyberspace, before they were killed they downloaded all their information on the web and live on in a different way. All's well and good until Sam's son Evan gets kidnapped and Sam is helpless. He asked Frank to do anything to get him a body so he can save his son. In the meantime, a terrorist is trying to wipe out the food supply in the United States. This is a different type of book that I usually read, I found it to be a very well, super action packed book.

Oh wow, I started with book three and liked it so much I had to go.back and listen to the previous books. So glad I did because I enjoyed this book just as much and I can safely say listening to the story out of order doesn't effect the enjoyment. You just have a clue as to what is going to happen but with so many twists In the plot that isn't always certain. I can so easily see this being made into a big budget film, it is that good. The story is told by a number of characters, of which there are many but with so many twists in the plot it needs to be done this way and it keeps the story exciting and entertaining. The sci-fi body swooping is interesting (and scary) but it is the diabolical plans the baddies have to wipe out America that really grab you and keep you listening until the end. I just hope no terrorist get any ideas from this author. It is hard to write this review because so much happens and I don't want to give away any spoilers but I still want to get across the message that it is well worth a listen.
With the Leopard dead, his brother the cub comes out of hiding to act out his brothers plan and take revenge on the people who killed him. But first he needs to take out the team who stopped him and he does that by kidnapping a young boy. Sam is dead but lives on In the computer world that is until his son goes missing then he and his friends pull out all the stops to get him back and part of that plan means finding Sam a body he can use. The kidnapping is the first of many attacks planned and with many lives threatened the Cub must be stopped because he has discovery a weakness that is ripe for attack.
I liked the narrator and think.he adds to the drama with just the sound of his voice.

This is obviously not the first book in the series, and although I could follow perfectly the plot and storyline, I'm pretty sure I'd have enjoyed it a lot more if I had read the first one.

Nevertheless, the story is great, and I really liked the ethical issues that are brought by this new... technology? I'm not really sure it's technology what we are talking here. It's something so new and different that it's hard to categorize.

The characters, particularly the secondary ones, those that found themselves in something bigger and a lot more radical than what they thought at the beginning, are very well presented and it's easy to see how they ended there. And, surprisingly, I found myself sympathizing a lot with Juan :D

This is a well-written techno-thriller that will appeal to any reader of the genre.

Daniel Greenberg 's narration is truly great, a big range of different voices, all of them easy to individualize, and all of them nice to the ear. Which is not an easy feat with so many characters. Kudos to you, Mr Greenberg!

Chilling and Thrilling

This is a cutting-edge techno-thriller. Sam is forced to find a body so he can come back from the dead to save his kidnapped son and try to stop a psychopath who is set to deploy many nightmarish scenarios throughout America. I was spell bound while reading this book and didn't want to be disturbed. You will hold your breath as you wonder if this villain can be stopped before it is too late!!!
