A post-apocalyptic road movie tale where Earth has been turned into a vampires' hunting ground. PUBLICATION IN 3 VOLUMES - COMPLETED WORK. A cataclysm has transformed the Earth's atmosphere, blocking out all ultraviolet light, plunging it into a new ice age, and giving vampires free reign across the planet. With the human race threatened with extinction, two adults and a handful of children struggle to survive, hidden in the rubble of a ravaged Spanish city. Led by a mysterious savior who joins them, they embark on one last, desperate gamble to cross Europe in search of refuge, to where the last of humanity is gathered... Written by horror maestro David Muñoz (Guillermo del Toro's The Devil's Backbone, Whispers in the Walls) and drawn by Manuel Garcia, this moving, yet brutal, tale of friendship and survival leaves bite marks on the neck and frostbite on the soul.
Because of some sort of apocalyptic event, the world has gone dark- now vampires are free to hunt whenever, wherever, with no need to hide. That's a neat premise, but it feels like 30 Days of Night only more supernatural. What sort of event darkened the sky? Why is this all over the world? Who knows, really. But we follow a group of humans, mostly children, trying to make their way to some sort of safe haven. And... that's it. There's a 'good' vampire, he makes an effort to hide his clearly vampire self and there's drama about whether they can trust him, there's 'evil' vampires who just want to hunt humans, and then the volume ends. Sure there's some death and action along the way but aside from running into evil vampires there's nothing great about the journey. It's not like The Walking Dead, where the whole series is built around trying to find some new way to survive and build a home together. It's 30 Days of Night meets I Am Legend meets... I don't know, Blade? This series has nothing truly unique about it that makes it better than all those other stories, which have some sort of mission statement or style to them.
As far as post apocalyptic vampire stories are concerned this one is pretty decent. A strong start to a series with some solid life to work with. Plus anyone who likes exploring "vampire morality" in stories could like the conflict here.
This is a Spanish graphic novel although I believe it was first published in France. This edition is translated into English for the US market and is available on Kindle Unlimited.
There’s nothing original in the premise. An unspecified environmental catastrophe hides the sun and frees vampires to prey on the few remaining humans. A secret order that controlled vampire depredations before the event is still in existence, and some of its members protect humans despite being vampires themselves. The story follows a group of children, a tough young woman who had taken them under her wing, and their vampire protector, as they trudge through a frozen Spain and France.
From these simple pieces, the authors create a plausible and compelling story, full of moral conflicts and distrusts, with engaging characters. The art is straightforward but very effective. All together, this is very well done if nothing special.
Well drawn with concise smooth flowing dialog. The story line was rather pedestrian and free of surprise. I still felt empathy for the protagonist even though he was a bit weak willed and
indecisive in the choices and statements the made. All in all, storyline, art work and dialog was above average and it was a good shot but nonetheless satisfying read.
A children's book illustrator found herself in charge of a bunch of children when the apocalypse struck and the vampires followed suit. As they try to reach safety a new ally offers his help, but he's a bit long in the tooth, if you get my meaning. Kind of like The Walking Dead but with vampires, this didn't blow me away but it was a decent start.
Very short but it definitely pulls you in at the very beginning. Very enjoyable but due to how short it is, it lacks in the world building and explanation of certain aspects.
