দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার একান্ত নিজস্ব সংগীতশৈলীগুলির মধ্যে মার্গসংগীতের ধারা বাদ দিলে গজল গানের ইতিহাসই বোধহয় সবচেয়ে প্রাচীন। ধ্রুপদী গজল লেখা হয় মূলত উর্দু ভাষায়। উর্দু একটি পাঁচমেশালি ভাষা। আরবি, ফারসি, তুর্কি, সংস্কৃত, ব্রজ, অওয়ধি, এরকম নানাবিধ ভাষার মিশ্রণে মধ্যযুগে তৈরি হয়েছিল এই চমৎকার ভাষাটি। যদিও “গজল” শব্দটি আরবি এবং শব্দটির আক্ষরিক অর্থ : “প্রেমিকার সঙ্গে সংলাপ”।

শুধুমাত্র প্রতিদানহীন ব্যর্থ প্রেম (unrequited love)-কে কেন্দ্র করে গড়ে ওঠা একটি স্বতন্ত্র সংগীতশৈলী পৃথিবীতে বোধহয় আর একটাও নেই। এবং এই শৈলীটির আরেকটি বৈশিষ্ট্য হলো, গানের লিরিকের সাহিত্যগুণ অতি উঁচুমানের। সুরবর্জিত লিরিকগুলি পড়লে খাঁটি কবিতাপাঠের আনন্দ পাওয়া যায়। এবং এই উঁচুদরের কবিতার অঙ্গে যখন সুরের পোশাক জড়ানো হয়, এবং সঙ্গে যুক্ত হয় উপযুক্ত কণ্ঠের মাধুর্য, তখন বাহারের (বাহার= বসন্তকাল) যেমন চমন (=ফুলের বাগান) ইয়াদ আতা হ্যায়, আমাদের সবারই যেন কোনো এক গুলবদনের কথা মনে পড়ে যায়... (গুলবদন= গোলাপের মতো সুন্দর মুখ যার। এখানে মনে রাখা দরকার, গুলবদন শব্দের প্রযুক্ত অর্থ তথাকথিত “সুন্দরী” নয়। সবার কাছেই তার প্রেমিকার মুখ গোলাপের মতো সুন্দর)।

এই গুলবদনের উদ্দেশ্যেই যুগের পর যুগ লেখা হয়ে এসেছে গজল গান। এই গুলবদন কখনও রক্তমাংসের, কখনও কল্পনার। কিন্তু একে কখনোই ধরা যায় না— আলেয়ার মতো। কাউকে পেতে চাওয়ার তীব্র ইচ্ছা হৃদয়ে জাগেনি, এমন মানুষ পৃথিবীতে বোধহয় একজনও নেই। কাউকে স্পর্শ করতে চাই, কারো সঙ্গে নিজের জীবন মিশিয়ে দিতে চাই, নিজের মনের আর্তিগুলো কারো কানে পৌঁছে দিতে চাই, কিন্তু কিছুতেই সেটা সম্ভব হচ্ছে না। গজল সংগীতের মূল নির্যাস এটাই। এই জন্য গজলের কথায়-সুরে মিশে থাকে একটা অসহায়তার অনুষঙ্গ, অপ্রাপ্তির রিনরিনে যন্ত্রণা।

গজলের সঙ্গে বৈষ্ণব পদাবলীর বেশ সাদৃশ্য আছে। বৈষ্ণব পদাবলী মূলত নারীর (শ্রীরাধিকার) বয়ানে লেখা, আর গজল পুরুষের বয়ানে (যদিও পরবর্তীকালে নারীরাও গজল লিখেছেন)। সেই গুলবদন কি বুঝতে পারছে না আমি কতটা বেদনা নিয়ে জীবন কাটাচ্ছি? আমার অস্তিত্ব যে তাকে ছাড়া শূন্য মনে হয়, এটা সে বুঝতে পারছে না? ভিড়ের মাঝেও আমরা যখন একলা হয়ে যাই, এইসব প্রশ্ন যখন আমাদের জর্জরিত করে, ঠিক তখনই জগজিৎ সিং তাঁর জমজমাট কণ্ঠে গেয়ে ওঠেন : শাম সে আঁখ মে নমি সি হ্যায়/ আজ ফির আপ কি কমি সি হ্যায়... (সন্ধ্যে থেকে চোখ ভিজে যাচ্ছে বারবার/ তুমি যে নেই এই কথাটা ফের মনে পড়ে যাচ্ছে বারবার)।

যদি আত্মগত ঈশ্বরের অস্তিত্বকে বুঝতে না-পারি, তাহলে বাউল গান অর্থহীন মনে হয়। যদি সমাজের ভন্ডামি, নোংরামি আর দুনিয়াদারির ধান্দাবাজির প্রতি তীব্র ক্রোধ এবং প্রতিবাদের আগুন না-জ্বলে বুকের ভিতর, তাহলে দ্রুতলয়ে গাওয়া হিপ-হপ সংগীতের মর্ম বোঝা সম্ভব নয়। যদি চেতনার অ্যাবস্ট্র্যাক্ট অবস্থাকে উপলব্ধি করতে না-পারি, তাহলে ধ্রুপদী সংগীতকে নেহাতই অপ্রয়োজনীয় মনে হবে। যা-কিছু আমরা নিজেরা বুঝতে পারি না, তাকেই খারিজ করে দিতে চাই, কিংবা তাচ্ছিল্য করতে চাই।

গজল গানকেও অনেকেই বুঝতে ভুল করেন। কিংবা বুঝতে পারেন না। তাতে ক্ষতি নেই। কিন্তু যারা গজল গান শুনতে ভালোবাসে, “তুমি কি মরীচিকা না ধ্রুবতারা?”— এই প্রশ্নের সঠিক উত্তর যারা এখনও খুঁজে পায়নি, তাদের আশ্বাস দেওয়ার জন্য গুলাম আলি গেয়েছিলেন : ইয়ে বাতেঁ ঝুটি বাতেঁ হ্যায়, ইয়ে লোগো নে ফ্যায়লায়ি হ্যায়/ তুম ইনশা জি কা নাম না লো, ক্যায়া ইনশা জি সৌদায়ি হ্যায়? (“অনেকে অনেকরকম হাবিজাবি কথা বাজারে ছড়িয়েছে, তুমি সেইসব কথায় কান দিও না/ তুমি ইনশা-কেও ভুল বুঝো না, ইনশার কথা কি অতই সস্তা নাকি?”— ইনশা হলো এই অসামান্য গানটির রচয়িতা, পুরো নাম ইবন-এ-ইনশা। গজল সংগীতের সামগ্রিক দর্শন এবং সংজ্ঞা নিরূপণের উদ্দেশ্যেই যেন আমার অত্যন্ত প্রিয় এই গানটি লিখেছিলেন ইনশা)।

কাওয়ালি, টপ্পা, ঠুমরি, খেয়াল, কীর্তন কিংবা ভজন— উপমহাদেশীয় ধ্রুপদী সংগীতের এই চিরাচরিত শৈলীগুলির সঙ্গে গজলের সবচেয়ে বড় পার্থক্য হলো, গজল একান্ত ব্যক্তিগত অনুভূতির গান। কোনো সমষ্টিগত কিংবা সামাজিক কিংবা ধর্মীয় কিংবা আনুষ্ঠানিক অনুষঙ্গ জড়িয়ে নেই এই গানের সঙ্গে। যদিও পেশাগত কারণে অনেকেই সমবেত শ্রোতাদের সামনে গজল পরিবেশন করেন, কিন্তু বৈশিষ্ট্যগতভাবে গজল বারোয়ারি গান নয়। একলা শ্রোতার গান। ফরিদা খানুম কিংবা ভূপিন্দার সিং কিংবা বেগম আখতার যখন গান করেন, শুধু আমারই জন্য করেন।

গজল গানের বিবিধ গোরখ্-ধান্দা (গোলমেলে ব্যাপার) নিয়ে অনেক তানাবানা (টালবাহানা) হলো, এবার তো বইটার ব্যাপারেও সামান্য কিছু গুফ্তাগু (কথাবার্তা) হওয়া দরকার। পঁয়ষট্টি জন গীতিকারের লেখা গজল গানের সংগ্রহ আছে এই বইতে। প্রত্যেকের দুটি করে প্রতিনিধিত্বমূলক গানকে চয়ন করা হয়েছে। পৃষ্ঠার বাঁ-দিকে আছে রোমান হরফে উর্দু ভাষায় লেখা গানটির লিরিক, এবং ডানদিকে সেই লিরিকের স্বচ্ছন্দ ইংরিজি অনুবাদ। প্রত্যেক গীতিকারের সংক্ষিপ্ত পরিচয়ও রয়েছে, যেটি অনেক অজ্ঞাত গীতিকারকে চিনতে সাহায্য করেছে। এছাড়াও লেখক বিশ্লেষণ করেছেন সময়ের সঙ্গে বিবর্তিত হওয়া গজল সংগীতের বিভিন্ন পর্যায় এবং আঙ্গিককে। মূল উর্দু থেকে গজলগুলি যিনি অনুবাদ করেছেন তাঁর একটি বিশেষ পরিচয় আছে। উর্দু সাহিত্যকে কেন্দ্র করে পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে সমৃদ্ধ ওয়েবসাইটটির নাম rekhta.org, আনিসুর রহমান এই ওয়েবসাইটের একজন উপদেষ্টা।

সমাজের প্রতিটি স্তরের মানুষ গজল লিখেছেন। রাজা মহারাজা থেকে শুরু করে পথের ভিখারি পর্যন্ত; পুরুষ এবং নারী উভয়েই। ষোড়শ শতাব্দী থেকে একেবারে আধুনিক যুগের গীতিকাররা রয়েছেন এই বইয়ের পৃষ্ঠায়। আমার মতো কোনো গজলপ্রেমী যদি এই বইটি হাতে নেয় তাহলে তার মনে হবে : “কোয়ি তাজা হাওয়া চলি হ্যায় কহি” (মনোরম একঝাঁক বাতাস যেন বয়ে গ্যালো কোথাও)। যদিও আমি বইটি কবিতার বইয়ের মতো পড়েছি, গান হিসেবে ততটা নয়। সাদা পৃষ্ঠায় সুরের পরশ নেই, শুধু খসখসে লিরিক আছে। তবু কখনও এমন মুহূর্ত আসে, পাকিস্তানের একজন নারী কবি আদা জাফারে-র লেখা একটি গজল যখন চোখে পড়ে। তখন সুর স্থির হয়ে যায়, ঠিক যেমন বৃষ্টি নামার আগে স্থির হয়ে যায় গলির মুখে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা কদম গাছের ফুলগুলো। তারপর ঝোড়ো হাওয়ার সঙ্গে তাল মিলিয়ে বৃষ্টি নামে। ভিজে যায় ফুলের রেণু। একসময় বৃষ্টি থামে। একটা অদৃশ্য সুরের তীব্র সুগন্ধ ছড়িয়ে পড়ে চরাচর জুড়ে।

না ঘুবার মে না গুলাব মে মুঝে দেখনা
মেরে দর্দ কে তব-ও তাব মে মুঝে দেখনা...

ম্যায় না মিল সকু ভি তো ক্যায়া হুয়া কে ফাসানা হুঁ
ন্যয়ি দাস্তান ন্যয়ে বাব মে মুঝে দেখনা...

ওহি এক লমহা-ঈ দিড় থা কে রুকা রাহা
মেরে রোজ-ও শব কে হিসাব মে মুঝে দেখনা...

জো তড়প তুঝে কিসি আঈনে মে না মিল সকে
তো ফির আঈনে কে জওয়াব মে মুঝে দেখনা...

My Opinion: Yes, I am a ghazal & poetry lover & where you can get so rich literary ghazal other than in udru language. Urdu itself is an amazing language with such a rich diversity in their culture & words. When I got this book into my hands, I was the happiest person on earth. Although, the page count is much but this was the book which hardly took 5 or 6 hours. I am amazed by the wordings, the language, the culture & it was an amalgamation of various emotions. Each & every couplet was so worth reading. I cried after reading some because they are heart wrenching. The words penetrated deep into my heart, mind & soul. The cover is beautiful & the title is alluring. I must say this the book of the month for me. Feeling lucky because rarely we get something like this to read.

Pros: What to talk about pros, everything in book was very heart touching. For an experienced reader like me I felt so good that I got to read something like this after a long time. Many proses had meanings more than one which was fun. I have highlighted many proses which I loved. The translation was at it's level best. I highly recommend this to everyone who wants to read an outstanding book.
Cons: I won't recommend this book to beginners because this cup of tea will be difficult to gulp if you are a beginner.

This non-fiction seeming book on Urdu Ghazals is essentially for people who aren't fluent or are new to the Urdu language and the vast world of Ghazals.

With an introduction to various eras, poets, their style and essence, the romanization of their work, and a delicate English translation- this book provides a good base to discover and get familiar with Ghazals. It is a guide and also a compilation.

Noting that, the addition of the original script would have made this more precious for people who are already familiar with and enthusiasts of Ghazals.

To summarize, if you want to learn about Ghazals then this is a good read.

One of the most plausible, tedious & herculean task is to read, understand & feel poetry. However, to call it a task would be inappropriate. It defines the very existence of mankind.
More importantly, the underlying point lies in appreciating them & apply them in our everyday lives.
It's not meant to be understood by everyone. It's meant to be analysed. They carry various meanings. You cannot feel the depth instantly. It's not always necessary to feel or understand the derivations.

It's very difficult to write poem. Hence, the difficulty arises in accepting them in general. Not all can enjoy or appreciate poetry. One must be vivid enough to speculate them, ponder into depth of the words, perceive the seemingly vivacious vigour that represents wisdom, mankind, knowledge, embodiment, true joy & essence of poems lying underneath breathing the words of a poet.

This book talks about the history of ghazal & the very definitive approach to it. It's a guide to all the ghazal lovers & poetry lovers out there. The places where ghazals, shayaris, poems evolved & how it came into existence & how they flourished from time to time. These aspects have been explained effectively & extrapolated using various inferences. How various countries, cultures, people, artists, musicians influenced it. It was further complemented & supplemented with both Eastern & Western influences when travellers seeking knowledge shared it among the common folk.

And the book further presents hundreds of ghazals, especially in Urdu language. It also presents 65 different ports from sevel literary periods & diverse locations, how they come together in the form of this marvellous work of art. What impressed me is the English meaning given in parallel with the Urdu ones. Also, the inclusion of Roman transliteration of the originals in Urdu alongside their English translations is another important as well as interesting aspect which makes it a reveting reading experience. The interpretations are truly unique & gives an overall remarkable reading experience!

It is a good book and a very good attempt to translate the poetry into English language, so others can also enjoy the beauty of the language.

But i feel that somewhere the essence of the content (meaning) , the effect it is supposed to imbibe in our souls is lost when we translate from one language to another.

To completely drown and be with the poet and feel what he is trying to impart, one must try to read it in the same language.

अनीसुर रहमान द्वारा संकलित और अनुवादित 'हज़ारों ख्वाहिशें' (Hazaaron Khwahishen) केवल एक किताब नहीं, बल्कि उर्दू साहित्य की एक पूरी सदी का दस्तावेज़ है। यह किताब उन लोगों के लिए एक पुल का काम करती है जो उर्दू शायरी की मिठास को अंग्रेजी अनुवाद के जरिए समझना चाहते हैं।

मुख्य बिंदु : इस संग्रह में गालिब और मीर जैसे दिग्गजों से लेकर आधुनिक दौर के शायरों तक को शामिल किया गया है। यह दिखाता है कि पिछले 100 वर्षों में उर्दू शायरी कैसे बदली है।

मेरी राय (Personal Insight):
एक साहित्यकार और शिक्षिका के तौर पर मुझे लगता है कि यह किताब उन शोधकर्ताओं (Researchers) और पाठकों के लिए अनिवार्य है जो उर्दू के सौंदर्य को करीब से महसूस करना चाहते हैं। यह किताब हमें याद दिलाती है कि शायरी केवल तुकबंदी नहीं, बल्कि समाज का आईना होती है।

निष्कर्ष (Conclusion):
यदि आप अपनी लाइब्रेरी में उर्दू शायरी का एक प्रामाणिक और सुंदर संग्रह रखना चाहते हैं, तो 'हज़ारों ख्वाहिशें' आपकी पहली पसंद होनी चाहिए। यह किताब घंटों डूब कर पढ़ने और बार-बार गुनगुनाने के लायक है।

I appreciate the effort that has been taken in composing this book and the work of Rekhta Foundation in preserving the essence of the Urdu language.

This book was beautiful - the journey through the ages of the ghazal and its evolution has to be one of, if not, the best way to showcase the world of ghazals.

However, in a way, the book was lacklustre.

From a formatting perspective, the romanization in places was awful. The book would have benefited immensely from Urdu script also being included.

The English translation, whilst I appreciate the attempt of retaining the ghazal structure, was awful. The ghazals lost their effect, and the intricacy and nuance of the Urdu language was done a great injustice.

The backgrounds on the poets were… okay. It was repetitive and vague. It would have been immensely improved by sharing improved glimpses into the creative processes and/or unique features that the poets employed.

Overall, a great book for those looking to enter into the world of Urdu poetry; however, it will leave you feeling incomplete after reading, but perhaps that’s the beauty of Urdu poetry.

It took me nearly 2 months to go through this book, which is a painstakingly put together specimen of both - research and creativity, insofar as Urdu poetry is concerned. Documenting the entire history of Urdu shayari, the book brings together 65 poets, categorized in different eras marked by some distinct common characteristics. It will give you access, through short biographies, to important poets you have scarce heard about. The crowning glory of the book, however, are the translations of selected Ghazals, which have remained true to original rhymes, refrains and structure.
Bonus pride sentiment - the author of this book is a professor we have adored and admired - Anisur Rahman sir.

The Ghazal is a literary curiosity. It has many languages to speak in and many sites to belong to. It has been discovering and refurbishing itself in all its sites. With a history of more than five centuries in India, it also tells the story of the development of Urdu as a language of literary expression and its centres of writing and reading.

This book tries to explore the journey of Ghazal in the subcontinent, through different phases; Metaphysical Beginnings, towards the enlightenment, Romance of Realism, Advent of Modernism, Progressive Poetics etc; all the while shedding light on the poets who tried different techniques and mediums of Ghazal. Its a very comprehensive collection, from the very beginning of the Urdu Ghazal, to the late sixteenth century, and to the present times; with seven literary periods and 65 poets. It is really an aspiration to mark the best Ghazals written through the ages.

Amazing Collection of Ghazals! English Translation Largely Looks Apt! Well Researched and Well Written! This Volume as the author puts it has been a prolonged affair of love undertaken with some pain, some perseverance and some patience but always with pleasure! Hoping the author comes up with more volumes and eagerly awaiting.
