Wow this is probably the worse of the books since 30.

World: The art is fine, it’s still feels a bit off from the main series but oh well. The world building is broken, completely and utterly broken. In the past when the main focus of the dishes was realistic but stylised it the world was fun, it was hyper real with a dash of the fantastic. Now, the food and the cooking is utterly nonsensical: from bombs, to chainsaws, to dual wield...it’s utterly ridiculous. Any logic and reality that this series had with the wonderful recipes that it gave and the idea that yes this world is crazy but the food is real is all utterly and completely gone.

Story: The story is just as nonsensical as the world building. Once in the past all those battles that his single book has would have been on page, the food and the cooking was the main focus which drove the drama and the interaction. The love of food and the depth of research drove the story. Now, battles are off panel, cheap victories are the norm and results are just for the sake of moving the now nonsensical story forward. The story has lost all the reason this book was good in the first place. Where are all the other characters at the school? They are not allowed to see this worldwide competition? No Nikumi or any of the Polaris people? None of the alum from Totsuki? The story is utterly nonsense. Add to that the idea of Erina being so pivotal in the main story is now just an object is highly insulting. I’m not even going to start with the gay stereotypes that are found in this book.

Characters: What has happened to all these wonderful characters? They are a shadow of themselves are are mere parodies of what they once were. Is this a fan fiction? Do they not know the characters? I said above already, what happened to all the fan favourites? Are we to truly believe that none of the Polaris or Alice and Hayama are all not going to be here to watch?

This book is just bad now.

Onward to the next book!

First things first, I hate that fake Saiba person... I really hate how he is like Mimasaka that takes the precious knives out from the loser opponent. It isn't fair at all. He can bet other stuff but not that..
I am also disappointed about Tsukasa, though I really love him, still I am really disappointed. At the same time totally pissed at that fake Saiba... Just want him to get lost... Jouichirou made a really huge mistake in what he did to Saiba.. A grave mistake..

However, on the good side, I feel so proud for Takumi and Soma. After all they have been through. They remind me a lot of Doujima and Jouichirou. They are just so similar to them. I love the friendship and also the healthy competition between them.. I am just not sure what will happen next. And to think this will be the second to the last volume for now, I am no sure what else to do! I am excited and yet saddened that I will now have to wait for the next chapters and volumes!

As the series continues to weave drunkenly toward its conclusion with a big final tournament featuring outrageous villains and twists, it still manages to sneak in a few quality scenes between Soma and his father and his school rival Takumi Aldini. There is so much sound and fury going on, but I think the soul of the series is still alive in there somewhere.

Update: Reading reviews from people with the group’s experience I’m lowering to 3 stars.

due to it being borderline offensive (though I feel like it was trying to include a marginalized part of the population so the effort was nice? It’s the wording sometimes like purposefully giving a deep voice). This style seemed to be most inline with a rock opera horror. Several times I was reminded of Repo! The Genetic Opera. The dancing included.

I couldn't wait for at least six weeks to know what's going to happen in the TV series, so I decided to read its manga and feed my curiosity.

La parte que más disfruto son las últimas hojas; las historias extras.

La parte de las competencias ya no me gustan, solo me agrada que Soma siga con el mismo espíritu competitivo.

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Sōma!, Vol. 34 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (291–299) of the on-going manga series.

The tankōbon continues the BLUE competition and concludes the round before the First Gate. It seems only the Tōtsuki Saryo Culinary Institute students Sōma Yukihira, Megumi Tadokoro, and Takumi Aldīni passed along with Le Cuisiner Noir made it into the Inner Sanctum of the competition. Erina Nakiri and Asahi Saiba have been seeded into this round. This final round is a knockout mini-tournament.

The first round of the quarterfinals (?) match has Sōma Yukihira battling against Le Cuisiner Noir chef Sarge, who is a stern and intolerant military-theme chef and uses a chainsaw as her preferred cooking tool. The theme of their battle is Christmas cake. Despite her terrifying techniques, Sōma unanimously wins.

Another quarterfinal match has Eishi Tsukasa battling against Asahi Saiba – the leader of Le Cuisiner Noir. The theme of their battle is Young Chicken Meat. The powers of Asahi is finally revealed here as he has the instantaneously assimilate the special skills of the many chefs by just holding their signature utensils and even multiply those skills to create unique and unprecedented dishes.

Another quarterfinals match has Takumi Aldīni battling against Don Kalma in a team working matchup. However, Isami Aldīni, Takumi’s twin brother and partner, has been kidnapped, leaving Takumi on his own. However, at the last minute, Sōma arrives to be his sous-chef. Together they defeat Don Kalma.

This tankōbon is written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki. It continues the BLUE competition. Each shokugeki demonstrates the lengths that Le Cuisiner Noir would go through to win and showcases the powers of Asahi Saiba. Unfortunately, while the Sarge and Don Kalma seems like interesting characters, they are more or less throwaway characters that give insight towards their leader Asahi Saiba.

All in all, Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Sōma, Vol. 34 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

My slight disappointment continues.
This time, the impossible techniques of "Sarge" drew me completely out of the story, especially the explosion-based oven. Also, she would need not only great finesse, but superhuman strength to use that chainsaw-based carving knife in either of the ways that it's been shown to work, so far. Some of the earlier stories in the series ventured slightly into fantasy, but only slightly, as characters displayed amazing senses of taste or smell along with experience that doesn't fit their ages. By comparison, though, these were only slight exaggerations compared to the things these "noir" chefs can apparently do.
It's not horrible, but I wish the author had gone in a different direction for these last few volumes of the series.

Soma battles chainsaw lady to make a Christmas cake.

Throwing baking in was a bit of a twist since cooking does not equal baking. I liked Soma's rendition and how he used material from the mini-mart on this delicate challenge. Having chainsaw lady use not only a chainsaw but a sledgehammer and an explosive oven is ridiculous. Not that this series hasn't always been ridiculous but it was more 'remotely possible if you were an amazing chef' than 'get real'. Aldini's mezzaluna and teamwork with Soma are a nice callback to previous times.

This was a fun volume, as we get to see all sorts of crazy noir chefs with crazy cooking tools, and see Yukihira take one down with ! And also, a Yukihira-Aldini team-up! I have no idea why on earth this is the cover for this volume though--Erina's in it for all of five seconds. But whatever. This manga is still one of my favorite things and it certainly brightened up my late night waiting for my baby to wake up screaming!

This is wrapping up to be a strange conclusion. Soma and friends have progressed to the third gate of the Blue competition. Tsukasa got taken out by faker Asahi Saiba who can see someone cook and then use their cooking equipment to magically absorb their specialized knowledge. The Aldini-Yukihira pairing was fun (but I hated the "joke" about one member of the competition having a five o'clock shadow and deep voice while wearing a dress... come on).

Because I had actual (negative) feelings towards the opponent, this volume gets 2/5 instead of 1/5. Definitely feels like the writers, artists, and publishers are trying everything to either milk this series dry, save it somehow, or hope to merely keep it going long enough to close the story.

The Aldini brothers get caught up with a nefarious (and somewhat offensive) noir chef. Well, you-know-who just happens to be right there to help him out. The feel of the series has definitely changed, and it's not for the better. It's no longer a cooking manga - more like a duel/fighting manga but using "special" skills and culinary dishes as weapons instead.

Mmm, lastima , esta serie parece que va a terminar descarrilada. Y mira qué pude aceptar los métodos de cocina de los noir , pero lo de Asai, definitivamente eso si ya no.

Hope you didn't think the chainsaw carving knife was bad, because now we have jugglers and guillotines and all sorts of bogus tools that we're told are super-powerful ultra-rare mega-useful cooking tools.

Oh and transphobia! Lots of that, too!

Yes there are some great moments and callbacks between Aldini and Soma but 5 good pages does not a good volume make.

Ok, it's time I stop reading this series. I have enjoyed the previous volumes, but this just wasn't it. This story arc is just... unnecessary.

I love this manga series and I think I should let it go with good memories instead of reading any further and spoiling my entire experience.

Soma keeps moving up in the tournament noir. Eishi competes against Asahi in the tournament and loses. Soma and Takumi team up, as Takumi's brother is tied up at the moment he needs to arrive for his brothers cooking battle.

So, the clothes explosion thing was kinda funny at first, but I got tired of it fairly quickly, and now it's starting to really annoy me! But I still like Soma and the dumb story, so I can't stop reading these unfortunately. Sigh.

Worst one yet! Using all these crazy tools to cook is getting a little ridiculous. There are moments where the story feels similar to when the characters were at school, but most of the time it just feels like a totally different manga. Also, the gay stereotypes were just awful.

Soma is a son who definitely makes his father proud.

This story will show you that perseverance and adaptability are more valuable than talent.
