And that's a good thing. Because I'm an electromagician - EM for short. My skin tingles as the energy courses through me, down to my fingertips. Someone's coming, though I don't know who. Doesn't matter. I know they want my power, and no one's taking that without a fight. As the electric charge inside me builds, my hair starts to lift. I hate when it does that, so I pull up my hoodie with one hand, seeing tiny arcs jump from one finger to the next. There's a thumping sound in the hallway. Time's up. I tense, ready to fight, concentrating on the door as the handle is jiggled by someone outside.I'm so focused I don't even hear the ones coming up behind. "There she is," a deep voice says. "There's Lightning Hopkins." Before I can even turn around, the voice growls a command. "Kill her."--- From the bestselling author of the John Black series ( For I Could Lift My Finger and Black Out the Sun , The Black Veins of the Earth ) comes a new urban fantasy about a woman who can harness lightning to make magic. Keith Soares has "done it again!" (ARC Review) ---

Keith Soares is an independent American speculative fiction author who has a potentially unhealthy obsession with Godzilla, so it’s no coincidence that kaiju have made it into some of his stories. His favorite question to ask when writing is, “How would I respond if that really happened, right now?” If he saw a raving, bloodthirsty shamble, he’d call it a zombie. If he suddenly couldn’t be hurt by fire, he’d call that superpowers. If he could harness electricity at will, he’d call that magic.

More than anything, Keith writes stories about family, whether that means the parents that gave birth to you or the friends you’ve had for years. His characters are fiercely loyal, though they often feel like they aren’t up to the job of whatever disaster they’re living through. We all feel that way, sometimes.

Keith's novels include The Oasis of Filth, the John Black series (beginning with For I Could Lift My Finger and Black Out the Sun), the Lightning Hopkins series (beginning with Struck), and White Fire.

This is my first exposure to Mr. Soares’ writing; I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Using 1st person narration was interesting, but Lyn’s internal voice was argumentative, mostly negative and very hard on herself. It took me a while to figure out how that related to what she was doing, but once I understood that’s how she rolled, I laughed at a lot of her comments because it sounded like me! I got pulled into the story and had a hard time putting it down, even to go to bed. The story is well-written and easy to read, the characters are vividly depicted, making the reader feel present in the action. The primary characters are literally electrically charged, which is a different set of powers, presenting some unique circumstances, to say the least. I read for escape and entertainment – I was not disappointed. I’m eager to read the next book in the series, which I have already bought.

What an amazing fantasy book. Totally intriguing. A woman who can harness lightening to make her magic. Some don’t think that’s a good idea. Can’t wait for the next book.
