I was a teenager when I first read this book, and have returned to it time and again over the years. James Clavell was an amazing writer, and I can't think of anything he wrote that I did not love unconditionally.

This was an incredible saga and a terrific read. I thoroughly enjoyed this. My only complaint with this book is the time lapses within the multiple stories, which conveyed more of what that particular character went through in the past or what made them the person that they were characterized as being. I wish there would have been a break in the paragraphing or narrative to reflect that time lapse. Otherwise this contained multiple stories, characters, events, and outcomes with a deep competitiveness between two factions. In my mind I envisioned the 'Tai-Pan' of the Noble House being played by Sean Connery with his Scottish history, handsome debonaire mannerisms. I could just picture that voice when Ian Dunross spoke throughout the story. Overall, I highly recommend this for those who are James Clavell fans.

Excellent close to the 2-volume saga of the struggle of the tai-pan of one of Hong Kong's great enterprises, the action spanning one week in 1963. Suspense throughout as we continue to learn about the real-life history, culture, traditions, language, food, & border clash as background in a land full of good people and bad.

Now that I've completed this novel, Tai-Pan, & Shogun, I'm convinced that only the communist ideologs seek control over both Hong Kong & Taipei. The Chinese realists would rather that the British had maintained ownership of the city-state, and that the U.S. would continue indefinitely to militarily protect the independence of Taiwan, as they are far better benefit to China mainland as healthy, vibrant trading partners than puppets of a failed dictatorship.

Another amazing story by Clavell. The intrigue and alliance shuffling really pick up in the second half of the the tale. Each chapter I found myself saying "that was the best chapter of the book! So much happened!" and then would have my jaw drop when the same thing would happen in the next chapter.

Amazing characters. Incredible plot that keeps the reader at the edge of their seat. Fabulous easter eggs for those that have read the previous novels in the saga.

I will say that modern aspect was less fun for me, but did not take me out of the story. But I called this Historical Fiction, and that might be misleading.

I enjoyed this miniseries when I was a kid so I thought I would enjoy the book. Well, after 1173 pages I can definitely say…I’m glad I’m done. This book was a bit of a slog, especially the beginning. Probably 30 characters to keep track of. And a book written 40 years ago about a period 60 years ago doesn’t age well in attitudes toward non-whites and women.

Finally finished the last book in Clavell's Asian Saga; this one is set in current time of the sixties in Hong Kong. Lots of adventure and suspense right to the end!!!

Doesn't stand the test of time for me. Too confusing with all the spy vs spy, double - crossing, politics and finances.

I read the book twice and will definitely read it again.

Why?

I consider it as a pure masterpiece in capturing the world of high finance and business empires even though some may consider it a "romantic" view of things.

Nevertheless, I still find it very relevant in today's corporate intrigues and corporate battles to such a point that it seems Mr. Clavell had already lived the future and was just writing it down via the Noble House.

Come to think of it, the growth of China as a "Business Powerhouse" was already foretold in the book including the subtle Asian business strategies that is now being implemented by most Asian Tycoons. Due to such, it left me in a state of awe.

Further, as I re-read the book I also found various details that changed my previous perception of the book's characters and plot. It is like going into a candy store and finding new candy every time. It is simply a treasure trove that will surely make the reader want to keep on re-reading it.

To be honest, my review does not do justice to the masterpiece that is Noble House and I don't think that I am even equipped nor able to review the aforementioned masterpiece.

Hence, my only plea is to go and read the book because that is the only way to truly appreciate this modern masterpiece.

Fourth in the Asian series, this Clavell novel is not for the casual reader at 1206 pages. But for Clavell fans and for those wanting to understand more of Japan's history and mindset in the 1960s, this novel will keep you entertained for a long while. Ian Dunross is heir to the title Tia-Pan and the fortune and businesses of the Noble House started several generations ago by Dirk Strain. Romance, greed, violence, financial manipulations of markets, even horse racing grace the many pages that cover barely a week in 1963. Good luck.

Bourgeois society in post-war Hong Kong. The triumphant return of the Peter Marlowe character from King Rat, although i almost suggest reading this as the prequel. A fast-reading look into a society so very different from any other it absolutely takes the reader outside the box and leaves an unalterable bewilderment

It's a bit dated, and contains a lot more sexual theme than I remember (but the popcorn type, so it is safe for young people), but this book is an epic in terms of the tale and in terms of size. And very engaging.

Reading this reminds my why I started reading when I was young... this is a world you can loose yourself in. And if you haven't already, you should.

Great Book! It was very interesting to de how Japan looked and functioned in the 1960s. I can't wait to read the other books!
