I am Heather McCollum, writer of 16th and 17th century Scottish romance full of adventure and intrigue, sprinkled with humor, history, and spice. Brawny Highlanders and feisty heroines are my favorite characters!

I am also a mom of three kids, dog-mom of one rescued geriatric golden retriever, and wife of one 6 foot 4 inch Highlander. When I’m not trying to help my kids make it through the day, baking things I see on The Great British Baking Show, or writing, I’m usually educating women on ovarian cancer (I’m a nine-year survivor).

I love kilted heroes, chai lattes, and eating buttered air-popped popcorn for dinner on Friday nights (my dog loves this one too).

...it ended well

I enjoyed A Rose in the Highlands for the most part, but there were a few eye rolls too. A little bit too modern...or wishful thinking for the time it was set. I also found myself scoffing at the heroine's sexual liberation. It just didn't seem very authentic or true to its time.

The narrator does a great job and I found it easy to escape to that castle and time.

The Story:
Scotland, 1684

Evelyn and her sister both need to escape England and starting the Highland Roses school in the family's recently acquired Scottish castle is the perfect plan.
"Nathaniel was giving Evelyn a chance to escape. If she could show in three months that Finlarig castle and its surrounding acres could be profitable, she would become an independent woman. There was no if about it. The alternative to success was too great a nightmare to ponder. She would build up a prosperous school for ladies while managing Nathaniel’s new sheep business, and Nathaniel would get her out of the betrothal her father had contracted."

The problem....the Cheif of the clan and the town have no intentions of relinquishing the castle to the Worthington family. In fact, after recent actions by some vile English soldiers, everyone in Killin has a great deal of hatred toward anything to do with England.
The Scot's plan: "“Aiden says I should let her stay, act like I support her. Then when she fails, she’ll leave, and I’ll retake Finlarig without bringing the English down on the whole village and clan."

My Thoughts:
The following are my thoughts about this book:
- I liked Evelyn’s spunk and determination.
- Her lack of fear/naivety of the English soldiers was kind of funny. "Lower your muskets,” she yelled with all the fury and unease boiling within her. “Or Chief Campbell won’t allow me to properly berate you for your insolence.”
- Evelyn,'s discussion with her sister about an aroused "male organ" made me chuckle. And I agree...."I don’t think Michelangelo sculpted a man in… well, all his grandness.”
- The statue of David conversation between the 4 girls was cute. Who hasn't thought this?
“He is sculpted out of six tons of marble to represent David from the Bible. He stands seventeen feet tall at the entrance of Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy.”
"But he has such a wee member,” Alana said.😂
"Alana turned her face to Kirstin. “Maybe this Michelangelo had a tiny frigger, so he gave David one.”
"Surely, that would be a sin to give King David, from the bible, a wee jack,” Kirstin said."

A new favorite! I honestly thought this was going to be just another romance novel but this one was really good! I love that the couple didn't get together and break up every five seconds but there was plenty of epic drama to keep the story gripping my interest. I love that it starts fast, no boring parts at all. The writing is wonderful, flows perfectly and is easy to understand. The characters are awesome. I love Evelyn, she's strong, forward thinking, and not about to sit down and let others do all the hard work. She's also very loyal to those she loves. Just a wonderful character! Our hero is just as wonderful! He's a strong leader that's not put off by a strong woman.

Watching their romance was sizzling! It's so long before they finally get together and it had me sitting on the edge of my seat. Too engrossed to put the e-reader down. I just had to keep going. Overall, this is such a great historical romance novel. I loved every second of it.

Very kilty

Love those highlanders! I really liked this book but at times I had to force myself to continue. Grey and Evelyn were a great couple. The whole school thing just seemed a little farfetched. A gymnasium, French philosophy, etc just seemed a little too much. The women couldn't even read yet. But I did like their romance. I am eager to read about Nathaniel, her brother, and Cat, the healer. He turned out to be a good man. I was worried he was the bad guy for most of the book. That would have been a bummer. I loved how the bad guys were defeated. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Get ready for an entertaining battle of wills! A Rose in the Highlands crackles with energy thanks to the excellent chemistry Grey and Evelyn have. I adored Evelyn’s spirit and her determination to set up a school where girls can learn a host of skills from reading to self-defense. She’s an intelligent woman who won’t be cowed in a time where silence and obedience were demanded of her peers. And while Grey starts out as her enemy, it’s clear these two won’t be able to resist the pull between them for long. Grey has reason to hate the English. His parents were murdered, his castle seized, and he and his family and friends were nearly killed. So even while I was rooting for Evelyn to succeed in starting her Highland Roses school, I understood where Grey was coming from in the beginning. He’s a strong, proud man, but he’s also protective and caring. He and Evelyn make a great match and I enjoyed watching them fall in love. Add in secrets, conspiracies, and a healthy dose of suspense and you have a truly well-rounded story that’s incredibly difficult to put down.

Grey and Evelyn are the heart of A Rose in the Highlands , but the residents of Killin – not to mention Grey and Evelyn’s siblings – add further life to the tale and made me look forward to more Highland Roses School books. So while I finished A Rose in the Highlands a well-satisfied reader, I’m eager to learn Scarlet Worthington’s secrets in A Protector in the Highlands.

A great new series, with adventure and characters you’ll enjoy and love , some you’ll love to hate too .
This will be another memorable series for Heather McCollum, after the success of The Hearts series and others .
It’s really well written, keeps your attention and rolls along at a decent pace , which is good obviously.
The main characters are believable and interesting , there are also some great secondary characters too , with really interesting problems or lives , you can see so many more books sprouting from this .
I really enjoyed it and would happily give it five stars .

Evelyn Worthington flees to the Highlands with her maid and her sister Scarlet to avoid marriage to Lord Philip Sotheby. Her brother Nathaniel recently purchased a forfeited castle and has given Evelyn three months to prove she can support herself. Their father left instructions in his will that if Evelyn didn't marry Philip, she would be left penniless and her inheritance would go to Nathaniel and Scarlet. Nathaniel gives her an opportunity to remain unwed, but he can only hold off Philip for so long.

Evelyn's idea is to start a school at the castle and Scarlet has her own reasons for going with her. They arrive during a storm and are shocked at what they find - a burned castle and a hostile, half dressed highlander ordering them to leave, at sword point! When Evelyn tries to explain that she owns the castle and shows him the bill of sale, he burns it and orders her off his land.

Greyson "Grey" Campbell is the chief of the Campbells or Breadalbane and Finlarig Castle. His father was killed by the English and they told him his lands were forfeited for treasonous acts against the crown. The English soldiers under the command of Capt. Cross go as far as to try and burn them out of the castle, severely injuring Grey's cousin and commander, Aiden. When the English girl shows up saying she is now the owner, he is angry and acts rashly, but he is firm, this is his castle. She follows him in and immediately starts making plans for her school. He plays along, but tells his clan to hinder her.

Evelyn is a wonderful heroine, she is intelligent, kind, compassionate and truly horrified by what the soldiers have done to these people. If she was not so desperate, she would give Grey back his castle, but for now, that is not an option, so she sets out to befriend (and bribe, if necessary) the clan. Grey is attracted to her and finds himself softening to her, despite his desire to clear his parents names and reclaim his castle.


I really enjoyed the story, it is well written and interesting, with wonderful characters, steamy love scenes, really vile villains, secrets, lies and a seemingly impossible HEA. My major problem with the book was the complete butchering of titles - it is really a personal pet peeve and doesn't affect the story - but it irked me to no end and cost the book a 1/2 star. Aside from that, I liked the book and would be happy to recommend it and look forward to next installment.

Set in the time of the Merry Monarch, King Charles II, this story tells of two English ladies escaping from England to live in the Scottish castle that their brother had recently purchased. They planned to thwart to terms of their father’s will by setting up a school for ladies in Finlarig Castle but are shocked to discover that the castle has been damaged by fire set by English army officers and the castle is still the home of clan chief Greyson Campbell who has no intention of leaving his family home! Evelyn Worthington is not daunted by the dour Scotsman and both are stubbornly determined. As attraction between the two grows, secrets are revealed and danger grows as others have plans for the Castle, plans which puts their very lives in peril.

This is the start of a new action packed historical series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has great characters - some you’ll love and others you definitely won’t! It is fast paced, with plenty of twists and turns and revelations to keep the reader enthralled. It is insightfully written, giving a look into the conflict between the Scots and English in that era. The writing flows well, keeping me turning the pages and totally engaged in the story. I am now looking forward to reading the next book in this series which will feature Evelyn’s sister, Scarlett, who had apparently caught the eye of the Merry Monarch. I have no hesitation in highly recommending this story to anyone who enjoys steamy historical romance with a strong female and alpha male initially in conflict till love finds a way to unite them!

This trip to the highlands did not exactly provide the place to get away from it all and start a new. Evelyn and her sister were determined to start a school for girls away from the society of England. The new highland series start off with a few bonnie lassese in the castle of one very stubborn, brutish, alpha clan chief.

I loved the characters. The strength. The will. The determination. They were the heart and soul of this story. If one would have been missing we may have gotten a completely different story. The writing was building a fantasy of highland life, romance, and at the same time giving a bit of Scottish history with the English.

I don't want to give any of the good stuff away. This was one heck of a highland romance between an alpha clan chief and a head strong, determined English lady. Evelyn and Grey did not start out as friends, not even allies, not even acquaintance, but through the twist and turns and action with a well thought out pacing. These two find that love can help you through it all and then help you climb higher.

If you are a lover of historical romance. If you are a lover of the Scotland. If you are a lover of the highlands. If you just want a good old fashion (not so old fashioned) romance, you need to stop right here pick up a copy and get yourself to reading this one. Heather McCollum has done historical romances a very good job. Thank you.

What started off as a thorn in his side blossomed into love in his heart. So became the rocky road relationship of Evelyn Worthington and Greyson Campbell, the main couple of this enemies to lovers, Scottish romantic tale by Heather McCullom. To say they had obstacles in their way would be an understatement, folks.

As Scottish laird of a castle, you can’t blame Grey for being put out that he and his people have been kicked out of their ancestral home. To make matters worse, they all could have been killed when the English almost burnt it completely to the ground with them in it. He’s determined to bide his time until the English invaders up and leave his land.

With her feisty but Pollyanna type attitude, Evelyn is just as determined to stay. She’s got a lot at stake, my fellow Scottish romance book loving friends, including dodging an unwanted marriagement arrangement should she fail at establishing a successful school in this particular castle now owned by her brother.

As usual this author’s writing flows seamlessly, and I stayed completely engaged. There is a villainous plot that slowly but surely gets revealed, which results in an explosive showdown. Just enough Scottish brogue is scripted in to feel verra authentic but not overly done. Having read and enjoyed her Highland Isles series, I expected no less and was not disappointed. Here’s to hoping you’ll feel the same.

The next book will feature Scarlett, Evelyn’s sister, who had to flee King Charles II’s court in the middle of the night. It would appear he had his sights on making her one of his many mistresses.

Evelyn Worthington and her sister Scarlet fled London with a lady’s maid and their brother Nathaniel’s blessing. Evelyn was not willing to marry the man her father insisted she marry in his will and Scarlet was running from some unknown issue she was unwilling to share. Their brother sent them by coach to a newly purchased castle taken from the Scottish clan Campbell due to the Laird being accused of treason. When the women arrive the new chief is in the doorway and Greyson is not willing to let the foreigners take his home. With the stalemate soon resolved by having the women come inside, at least for the night, the ongoing battle of whether Grey will reclaim his ancestral home or Evelyn will turn it into a school begins in the morning.

Grey is a wonderful book boyfriend and Evelyn is a bit prickly but smart, willing to learn and all-in when it comes to creating the school of her dreams – one that will allow women the same education that men are entitled to. Her vision for the school is not necessarily in harmony with his need to turn the castle into a fortress and that can and does lead to tension. Add into the mix a Scottish lass with her eye on Grey, evil men afoot with nefarious plans of their own, a village angry with English who have been up to no good…and a whole lot of fun subplots and you have a story that is filled with adventure, romance and derring-do.

I enjoyed this book and though at times I thought, “Would that really happen in 1694?” I went on reading and thought, “This is fiction and fun and not necessarily factual.” I did look up the information on snails used in the treatment of burns…interesting! Amazing that what once was commonly used in folk medicine is now being used again.

At the end of the book I immediately wanted to dive into Scarlet’s story to find out what happened to make her want to leave and who she will end up with. I have no idea how many books are planned for this series but look forward to reading them all!

Scotland 1684. Heather McCollum expertly combines her historical knowledge with romance and many surprises in this wonderful tale of two people who come together in an unexpected way. Englishwoman Evelyn Worthington is desperate to flee an arranged marriage and manages to talk her brother into letting her go to his castle in Scotland. She plans to make a school for ladies and be successful in earning money. She has three months or she will have to return and marry, but she is determined!!
When she arrives at the castle, she is met at the door by Grey Campbell, a Scottish Clan Chief claiming the castle is his. The English had already wrought destruction trying to kill his people and take over his land. Can you imagine how he felt when a Sassenach stood at his door claiming the castle was her brothers?
He was furious, but stubborn Evelyn marched right in and began making plans. When sees the plight of the people inside and how the place had been burned she is horrified. She realizes the castle should rightly go back to the Chief but she has to make a go of her school. As the two are around each other there is definitely an attraction.
Adventure, action and hidden secrets all make this story a page turning romance you will not want to miss. Who can resist a Scottish Highlander? A wonderful start to a new series!

School is in session in the highlands, and the course load is filled with suspense, high stakes plots, treason, sexy highlanders, and heart racing love. Get out your books ladies and try and keep up with this dynamic couple.

If you have been following my blog for awhile, you’ve heard me say this about historical romance several times, but this was my first time reading this author, and hot dang wow. Let’s just say she is a new favorite and most likely auto buy author for me. The story was a fantastic tale that took my breath away and in some small ways reminded me of Beauty and The Beast, only an infinitely better version and the hero is far from frightening looking.

Our story begins in 1684 with our heroine, Evelyn Worthington, headed to Scotland in hopes that she can escape the horrible reality of what has become of her future. She is bound by her fathers last Will and Testament to marry a rather pompous ars or lose every cent of her inheritance to her brother and sister, and there are stipulations about them sharing their wealth with her if she chooses this path. When her brother hears about a castle in Scotland that is up for sale after it was taken as payment when the clan chief was found guilty of treason against the English crown, he sees a way for his sister to get out of the marriage and still have a way to survive, so he buys it and sends her there to run his sheep farm. Evelyn‘s intentions aren’t all set on escape though, she plans on opening a school in which ladies can attend as well as men to learn how to read, write, sow, practice medicine to become a midwife, or practice the arts. She also likes the idea of her new comfortable library. She hopes to bring a new beginning to women everywhere, but what she doesn’t expect to find is a highlander blocking the door with sword drawn read to defend his home.

Grey is the son of the recently murdered chief of his clan Campbell. He feels like a complete failure for allowing the English trash to come into his home and brutalize not only the castle, but what remains of his family. He wants nothing to do with any English people, not even the soaking wet beauty Evelyn who shows up to claim his home. Even if he can’t run the lass through, he would rather see every English scum burning in the fires of hell they tried to send his family to, but what can he do? Hearing the lass’s plans births one of his own, one that’ll take time but get his home and clan back. What he doesn’t expect is the kindness he sees in the lass. Will he ignore his duty as the new chief of the clan, or will he sacrifice his heart for his people and pride?

I adored this heroine. I mean honestly what a transcending woman. I could not help but admire her more and more as the pages kept flipping. her thoughts about women and desire for them to be equals to men keep her in a very disliked position, but she is so passionate about the trying to win women the right to learn that she will not back down. Given the time period, this was no easy task or way of thinking. She has met with resistance that is sometimes violent since she was a child, and Scotland is not much different. She is not only told it was silly to learn how to read by many people, she is not liked, and above all else not welcome in anyone’s eyes. Yet despite all this, she pushes forward and quickly starts to prove her point.

Grey was also a wonderful hero. He has such a kind yet strong heart, it just makes you swoon. He has lost it all in the course of only a year, his parents, his home, and his pride. All he wants to do is pick up the pieces but having an Englishwoman taking over the castle really throws a mattucashlass in his plans to rebuild and causes him to find a new one. I loved how he changes his mind about her slowly as he gets to know her. His feelings towards the English is very understandable, yet he is able to look past it and see her acts as pure kindness rather than seeing her as a sneaky little witch. Despite his little attempts to make her want to leave, his protective nature towards her is undeniable, and I loved how that showed through in all the little things he does for her.

I loved how these two grew and changed together. To me when both people in a relationship change and grow due to them being together, they are on a truly equal ground and a perfect match for each other. With each new chapter in this book the way their love evolves winds up changing them in the most beautiful ways.

The secondary characters are also fantastic in this book. So many times I found myself holding my breath because of the way someone would act, or what someone would say. I found myself really pulled into their stories without feeling like my attention was being taken away form the primary story between Evelyn and Grey.

The larger story that has started in this book is also just amazing, and I simply can not wait for the next installment to see where things will lead to next.

Overall:

This was a smart, suspenseful, transcending, and at times funny ride that really pulls you in. This was my first time reading this author, but I can confidently tell you she is now one of my favorites. This is a must read for any romance lover who enjoys historical romance.

A Rose in the Highlands by Heather McCollum is the First book in the Highland Roses School Series. This is the story of Evelyn Worthington and Grey Campbell.
Evelyn, her sister and maid came to Finlarig Castle to help start up a school along with escaping a marriage. But what she found was a Castle damaged and Grey with his clansmen. Grey is not giving up the Castle to some English men. Evelyn starts trying to build the school that she wanted. Grey pretends to go along but one way or another puts up some road blocks. But of course their feelings start to take over and the goal becomes something different for them.
What a great start to what will be a really good series I believe.

I enjoyed this story of a brave English woman and her sister fleeing their home in England to make a life for themselves in Scotland. When they arrive at their new home they find it still occupied by the previous owners despite English soldiers trying to burn them out of it. What followed was a wonderful story of Evelyn , a determined Englishwoman trying to start a school for girls and Grey, laird of the clan Campbell learning to trust each other and fall in love. This was an excellent story. I very much enjoyed it and look forward to scarlet and Nathaniel’s story.

The more they fight and clash over the ownership of Castle Finlarig - their attraction only builds and grows. Plus there are outside influences whom also want this Castle. Yet both are stubborn, smart and sassy and are determined to win this battle. Neither was expecting outside influences that can put both their lives in jeopardy. Who will win and survive? Do these star crossed lovers even have a chance?

Again, Ms. McCollum pens another beautiful, bonnie and meaningful Scottish love story that readers will worship! I am hardly a new fan, as she is one of my favorite authors. I was excited for this new “Highland Roses School” series to begin! It definitely did not disappoint as I totally loved it! Just as I loved her “Highland Isles” series so much. This is just the tip of the iceberg as they say and I am in for the long haul. I look forward to reading each and every novel in the series. If book #1 is any indication-which was absolutely brilliant! I highly recommend “A Rose in the Highlands” by Heather McCollum, a definite delight!

The setting was absolutely breathtaking, the characters were written brilliantly , secondary characters like Scarlet and Nathaniel was just spectacular too! The dialog was just exhilarating. In addition the masterpiece plotting had my head spinning! I was holding my breath with anticipation not knowing what could possibly happen next!

Plus this novel has all all the elements Scottish historical romance readers love! It is a phenomenal, page turning, riveting-romantic-action-packed-adventure! It is so refreshing and so original where the heroine of this book is ahead of her time. Evelyn wants her womens independence, yet a good man she can love and will love in return. In addition, he will respect, honor and protect her too. Plus it’s filled with its share of villains, treachery, betrayal, hatred, mystery, suspense, weaving some bits of true history. In addition to the fun of Scottish festivals like Beltane and the freedom, comparing to the strict English restrictions of this time period. However the swoon worthy, honorable, hero and beautiful, intelligent, heroine come from two feuding counties. Will their love be enough as their are so many forces to keep them apart? It is a definite must read you won’t be able to put down. I read in one sitting as this phenomenal book is truly remarkable!

Evelyn Worthington is determined to escape the situation she's found herself in. In order to avoid marrying a man she wants nothing to do with, she has to find a way to be independent. However, when she arrives at the castle her brother has purchased, she finds it is already inhabited by the people that once owned the land and they're not willing to give it up without a fight. Will Evelyn be able to get Grey Campbell on her side or will they both lose when trouble arrives; trouble that could put an end to the happy ever after they truly deserve together?

What a brilliant start to this series Ms. McCollum has delivered in this first book of her Highlands Rose School series where the plot was an absolute page turner due to the obstacles these two face to be together; the dialogue was compelling and had me liking how much of a challenge the heroine provided the hero; and the main characters were absolutely entertaining and had me reading quickly, determined to discover whether the hero would be able to win the heroine over. However, it was from the moment the hero and heroine come face-to-face for the first time where this story really takes off, as the heroine isn't about to let the hero send her on her way. Not when she has so much to do in order to show her brother she can be independent and doesn't want to marry a man she's been promised to. Will the heroine get her way?

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories and I could understand why the heroine is so determined to gain her independence. Why should she have to marry a man she wants nothing to do with? Moreover, both the main characters were compelling and I loved the obstacles these two face to be together including the trouble Evelyn faces when it comes to her betrothed and whether she'll ever be free to be with Grey.

With the heroine, she's resilient, courageous, driven in her pursuit to get the school she wants to open up and running and I liked how much of a challenge she provides the hero. She's there to stay and not going anywhere, even after discovering things that make it hard not to want to give the hero what he wants most. I also liked the heroine's determination to fight for her chance with the hero when things become dangerous because love is worth fighting for. Then again, she must fight for the people she loves too in her family. No way can she lose anyone else. While the hero, he's been through so much and I could understand his hostility towards the heroine because her people (the English) were responsible for so much hurt. Will Grey and his family get their revenge or justice for crimes committed against them? I also liked how the hero's opinion of the heroine changes. She's different in the way she really cares for people unlike some of her fellow countrymen.

Overall, Ms. McCollum has delivered a fantastic read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was intense; the romance was delightful and had me loving these two together; and the ending had me worried for the main characters, but had me liking how determined these two were to fight for their happy ever after. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely, as the hero and heroine are so happy together. I would recommend A Rose in the Highlands by Heather McCollum, if you enjoy Historical Romance, the enemy to lovers trope or books by authors Stacy Reid, Jennifer Trethewey, Kerrigan Byrne and Lori Ann Bailey.

Evelyn and Scarlet Worthington fled their home to the Highlands of Scotland. Their plan to create a school in the new obtained castle in the town of Killin. Evelyn is fleeing a possible marriage to a boring suitor, that her late father, has decreed her to marry. If she doesn't she loses her inheritance PLUS both her brother Nathaniel and Scarlet's help. Scarlet is running for a totally different reason. Once they arrive at Finlarig Castle they come across Greyson Campbell Chief of the Campbells of Breadalbane and Finlarig Castle is "His" ancestral home. It has been stolen by the English right after both his parents were murdered. Evie explains her brother has purchased the castle and intends to turn it into a school. He realizes in order to get the castle back he must play along with Evie and wait for her to fail. He is so sure of her failure that he agrees to teach Self-defense classes. Which proves to be helpful. Along the way, they both fall in love but the mysteries of past dealings: murder, lies, and assassination plots all come ahead and Evie and Grey must fight together so they both can retain Finlarig Castle and save many lives.

The plot was strong and the characters full of personalities. I love all of Heather's books. I usually can figure out who the villain is right away, but this time it wasn't until the end, when the villain is actually revealed. I was glued to this book. I can't wait until book 2 comes out so we learn what secret Scarlet is hiding and running from!

My Thoughts:

This is the best book I have read by this author. It is the first book of a new series and a can't put down read.
Grey and Evelyn's story is a scintillating tale of a love that grows in spite of their differences.
Evelyn has come to Finlarig castle in hopes of starting a school where she plans to teach anyone willing in the area surrounding the castle.
Grey just sees his enemy. An English woman has no place in his home.
Will these two find more than hate among the scorched wall's of Finlarig castle?
I gave this book 4.75 of 5.0 stars for storyline and character development and a sensual rating of 3.75 of 5.0 flames. The intimacy is.a hot and well written part of this story but it isn't necessary for this to be a poignant and wonderful story.

I just love those brawny highlanders who wear their kilt's so well. The cast of characters are fully developed with thoughts and feelings of their own. The story line is really good with a bit of mystery, adventure and of course love.
You have an Englishwoman who travels to the Scottish highlands to move into the castle her brother bought. She wants to open a school for ladies and will do anything to see it's fulfilled. But once she arrives, Evelyn Worthington is barred from entering by one man who thinks she's crazy.
Clan chief Grey Campbell is very upset that a Englishwoman, a Sassenach who is beautiful forces her way into his castle. She is a busy body who will not take no for an answer.
Grey will not give in to her, but declares war on a battle of wits between a man and a woman.
Lots of exciting things are happening, with outsiders try to get into Finlarig Castle with plans of their own.
But one thing is for sure, love comes at the oddest time, especially one woman who will do everything for the man she love and vice versa.

After just finishing two Historicals by Kerrigan Byrne that I really loved, I am disappointed that this one kinda bored me, at first. So much so, it almost became a DNF around 35%. Over a quarter of the book focused on Evie's damn school and her trying to set it up. It was too wordy with detail and I found myself skimming.

The characters were my favorite part of the book. I loved Grey and Evie and once the story focused more on them, and less on the school, I became more engrossed in their HEA. Their scenes together had me devouring the words.

Grey was your typical, head strong Scottish Laird, with a heart of gold, and Evie was a spitfire. You'll love her independence, strength, compassion, and tenacity. She definitely had character, full of rich personality. These two balanced each other out and were perfect for each other.

I can't forget Scarlet. I really, really want her story and her secrets. I'm hoping she is paired with Aiden!

Oh! And Nathaniel! He needs a story with Cat!

Once I got past my boredom, this turned out to be a decent book. An enjoyable one. If you are a Historical junkie and can look past all the school stuff I would recommend.

I really liked this one!

The broody chieftain, the headstrong heroine = happy me!

Said headstrong heroine, Evelyn and her sister, Scarlet - along with their maid, Molly - travel to Scotland, to a castle that their brother bought. Evelyn has three months to become independent, or else she ends up in a loveless marriage. So one can imagine that she does her best to make that happen. She wants to open up a school for ladies because in 17th century Scotland, men had the possibility of learning to read and write, while the women didn't. Evelyn refuses to simply be a wife and a mother. She wants to be more. Except, a broody chieftain, Grey stands in her way because the castle belongs to him.

It's a historical enemies-to-lovers romance novel that everyone should read because it has funny scenes, hot ones and it's full of feels. My heart ached for Evelyn, a few times and I wanted to shake some sense into Grey, but it ends perfectly, so all's well.

I voluntarily agreed to read an early copy of this book through Netgalley and my rating is 4 stars.

Lady Evelyn Worthington is running away from an unwanted betrothal. In his will, her father insisted that she marry a man of his choosing or be disinherited. The new estate her brother has bought is just the place for the two sisters to hide and start a new life. Unfortunately the previous tenants don't want to leave.
Chief Greyson Campbell is determined not to lose his clan's stronghold. The English have gone to evil extremes to force them out. It will not happen while there is breath in his body.
This is a very amusing story about a very strong minded young woman with grand ideas and a warrior with the odds stacked against him.
An action packed book that will keep you entertained all the way through. Great characters that I'm looking forward to reading more about in the next book of the series.

A well written well paced novel. The characters have plenty of depth, Grey & Evelyn are likeable & even though they are at odds to begin with soon find that as well as being attracted to each other they also like & respect each other. This is the start of a new series & there are plenty of secondary characters who I hope will have their stories, there’s also Izzy whose reason for not talking needs to be resolved. I found myself engrossed in the book & carried away by the plots, secrets & intrigue that accompanied the romance so much so that I read it in under a day & I certainly look forward to more from the author

Books like this are the reason why I love historical fiction so much. I really enjoyed this entertaining read, adored the characters, especially Lady Evelyn. She is a force to be reckoned, so determined and strong, nothing fazes her stubbornness. And no man can stand in her way. She has decided to become an independent woman and she will definitely achieve that goal no matter the danger.
Grey Campbell feels wronged. His parents were killed and his home was taken from him, but he cannot do anything about it. Not that he plans to give up on getting his home back, but it might take some time. For now, he is going to play along with Evelyn's plane and pretend to be working for her. Soon she will fail and return to England then he would claim his castle once again. However, he did not count on falling in love with her. That's one thing that would make his already complicated life even more complicated.
In the midst of danger, both Evelyn and Grey must survive and find a way to be together. Unfortunately, things are stacked against them and there may not be a way out.
It's a very well written story. I loved everything about it. I think it's a must read for historical fiction fans, especially if you love the highlanders. For me, it was a perfect read.
