Abe Sydlowski was a cop in Long Beach, California, and had a dedicated, distinguished career—even after he died. His ghost is appearing at a beach he used to patrol, and his brothers of the shield want to know why. Lacey Fitzpatrick and medium Sam Firecloud are called in but get one surprise before they even start. Daniel, Sam’s fourteen-year-old son, wants to work with them. When the trio goes to investigate, they find not one ghost, but two. Who is the young girl whose spirit haunts the beach with Abe, and what’s the connection between the two?

My regular fix of sleuths-with-a-difference, Lacey and Sam, in book number 15, in which they're met with two surprises: one, Sam's son wants to put his L-plates on and follow in his father's footsteps, and two, their investigation into the mystery why a dead policeman's ghost is appearing at a beach he used to patrol leads them to encounter not just his ghost, but that of a young girl who died there many years previously.

All I need to do is pull out my usual compliments for Bowersock's writing: neat, tidy, concise, easy to read, engaging, original, complete. The Lacey-and-Sam novellas are like a literal Tardis. Small on the outside but huge on the inside!

Karma Walk by Melissa Bowersock

I think this is my favorite book of A LACEY FITZPATRICK and SAM FIRECLOUD MYSTERY SERIES, so far. I had to add that little disclaimer because Ms. Bowersock continues to amaze me with her imagination and storylines. “Karma Walk” reaches further afield than any of her other books in this series. Also, Daniel, Sam’s fourteen year-old son wants to join Sam on his “walk.” Sam thinks this case will be a slam-dunk since they already know who the ghost is and allows Daniel to come along. It’s nice to see him accepting his budding mediumistic gift. However this case has a startling twist.

One of the things I enjoy about this series is how realistic each of the characters are. Sam and Lacey have grown individually and as a family unit. I also like the way the Fireclouds include Daniel’s girlfriend, Tori, in their family weekend plans. The secondary characters are as fully formed as the regular cast members. The dialogue is believable as they struggle to come to grips with elements in the story. Lacey and her research adds an element of realism to the stories. Which makes it easy to suspend disbelief.

When the pieces of each spirit’s story start falling into place it shocks Lacey, Sam, and Bernice, Abe’s widow, who immediately becomes a believer. Emotions are intense as this story comes to conclusion. I found it hauntingly beautiful. I love this series!

FYI: “Karma Walk” is book fifteen in Melissa Bowersock’s A LACEY FITZPATRICK and SAM FIRECLOUD MYSTERY SERIES. **Originally written for "BigAl’s Books and Pals" book blog. May have received a free review copy. ** December 10, 2018

Lacey Fitzpatrick and Sam Firecloud are paranormal investigators who try to discover why a ghost is haunting a place. They get plenty of business through word of mouth and some of the jobs come through old contacts. In this one, Lacey’s former job at the LAPD is what draws them an interesting case. A dead cop is patrolling a stretch of beach in Long Beach, California and his old partner hires them to find out why. And maybe get him to move on. They take Sam’s 14-yr-old son Daniel along since he expresses an interest in learning more about the gift he has inherited from his dad. What they discover is unusual, to say the least.

Well, this is a different one for the books. There’s not one, but two ghosts haunting this particular beach and the revelation is fascinating. Great plot, great execution, and wonderful characters. I’m still all in for this series.

Highly recommended series!

I finished reading book 14 Gangster Walk, sadly, as I had read all the books in the series and thought what am I to read now. So I decided to go over the list to make sure I hadn't missed any books to find two new books. WOO HOO! As always, the storyline was good, the characters very likeable, and hard to put down. I hope Ms. Bowersock will continue this series. So many possible storylines with Daniel in the family business. Wouldn't it be great having a tv series based on this series? Netflix? Hulu?

So this mystery was slightly different for the Firecloud clan as they knew who the ghost was to begin with. However there are still surprises for them, the ghost they are trying to help is the reincarnation of another person, which is also a spirit they need to help release. I love this aspect of the book as I believe in reincarnation and that we take the lessons we have already learned with us. I think it was really nice for Daniel to have helped them with this case, however not great what he had to see.

Reincarnation

I am not sure how I feel about reincarnation but this book gave a nice explanation of how it might work.sam and his son did a great job of releasing the two connected souls. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one.

Ok, so after giving lots of 3 stars, this one was more interesting to me. I loved the idea of reincarnation and the same soul. I liked Daniel embracing the gift and it became a family affair.

That damn releasing scene, actually all of those scenes get me every time!! I swear I won’t get emotional then bam I’m balling. This one was double the emotion on top of the widow talking to him… so flipping sad!

I think what gets me about the releasing is the beginning. Their names and ‘we know who you are’. It is hard to articulate what that does to me and how the author makes me feel. I think in life, and in death, we just want to be known. Not by a lot of people but by a few. Really know, really heard, and in those scenes he is giving them what we all hope to have one day. A connection to feel that we are seen, heard, and known.

Most awesome series

I really love this series. I like the length of the stories. They are just the perfect blend of description, background information and resolution. I like the family dynamic and a touch of humor. I appreciate not having to read through a monotony of descriptive narrative of previous books. I also like the Navajo portrayal of family members and customs.

Pushing the envelope.

I wouldn't have read the first fifteen books of this series if I didn't enjoy reading them all. As satisfying as it is reading about the ghosts and their stories, the family relationships add to the enjoyment. This novel goes beyond ghosts and touches on the concept of reincarnation. One doesn't have to fully believe, but only to be open to the possibility.

All 15 books

Each book in the series contains delightful surprises. My husband is reading the last book of this series. We both have really enjoyed them. My only complaint is that with my Kindle fire I did not see the review stars. My husband's paper white had it
Clearly.

The Team

I really like the way the author is gradually creating her characters and building a family. The author is very accomplished using small details to help build a Family unit. An excellent read.

Author tells the story well. Each mystery is fun to see how it unravels and if you can figure it out first.

Nicely done

A police officer is still watching over the area he patrolled in life. Sam and Lacey are called to help him move on. Surprisingly, there's another ghost tethered nearby. They search for answers to a decades old crime and the reason the officer is tied to the area where he'd patrolled only a year before. Daniel is coming into his own to help find answers and send tethered souls on to their destiny. Enjoyable!
