Professor & Mrs. Moriarty tackle a case too ticklish for Sherlock Holmes to handle on his own... James and Angelina Moriarty are settling into their new marriage and their fashionable new home — or trying to. But James has too little to occupy his mind and Angelina has too many secrets pressing on her heart. They fear they’ll never learn to live together. Then Sherlock Holmes comes to call with a challenging case. He suspects a prominent Harley Street specialist of committing murders for hire, sending patients home from his private hospital with deadly doses or fatal conditions. Holmes intends to investigate, but the doctor’s clientele is exclusively female. He needs Angelina’s help.
While Moriarty, Holmes, and Watson explore the alarming number of ways a doctor can murder his patients with impunity, Angelina enters into treatment with their primary suspect, posing as a nervous woman who fears her husband wants to be rid of her. Then a hasty conclusion and an ill-considered word drive James and Angelina apart, sending her deep into danger. Now they must find the courage to trust each other as they race the clock to win justice for the murdered women before they become victims themselves.

This is the second book in the Moriartys series. I enjoyed it very much now that James and Angelina are now married. They both show ingenuity and bravery in this second book. I enjoyed again the way that Moriarty and Holmes work with and against each other. Each one wants to pretend that he can do it all alone. A real clash of egos.
"A man’s home should be his castle, but this one had been occupied by a superior force."
The Moriartys have only been married a few months, and already relations are strained. While on the honeymoon, the professor discovered that his mathematical skills gave him quite a talent for gambling. The only problem is, now that their finances are improved, Angelina has decided to become the consummate society hostess by redecorating their large house. With the invasion of the decorators and the drapers and with his opinion constantly demanded on all the various wallpapers, Moriarty can't get a moment of quiet. He needs an occupation, something to keep out from under Angelina's fretful feet, but who would hire a man as notorious as he?
Enter Sherlock Holmes. He has a new case, one in which wealthy women have been mysteriously kicking the bucket right after attending a month-long visit to a salubrious sanatorium. The plan is to infiltrate the sanatorium to discover what dark deeds lie behind its walls. But although Holmes has a penchant for disguises, he can hardly dress up as a convincingly female patient. The pretentious detective convinces Angelina to do just that, but when matters go desperately awry, it turns out that Moriarty might have just found an occupation after all...saving his wife from a grisly fate!
This book was even better than the first one in the series. Moriarty and Angelina have new struggles to contend with as they decide how to relate with each other in their new state of domestic hostility. We see a good deal more of the inimitable Holmes, and while he's not exactly chummy with Moriarty, the two have arranged a prickly truce. The page-turning plot had just the right amount of suspense and danger. I'm hooked on this series now and can't wait to start the next one!
This is a review of the audiobook Moriarty Takes His Medicine (A Professor & Mrs. Moriarty Mystery #2) by Anna Castle and narrated by Jill Smith. I had read the first book in the series but was able to listen to this second book. I enjoyed both the book and the narrator reading the story.
First of my thoughts on the story. It took a while in the book for the suspense to build. At the beginning it was more about the relationship between James and Angelina Moriarty. Once Sherlock Holmes become involved, he does not help that relationship. This is a different perspective on Holmes but one that I think Arthur Conan Doyle always hinted about in his stories. Holmes has a one track mind, rarely thinking of other’s feelings. Anne Castle expands on that thought. Once Angelina makes a decision concerning visiting the “spa” hospital the suspense quickly builds. I was not at all sure of who was guilty and was surprised with a twist near the end. All in all a great story.
Now for the audio version of the story. I have listened to only a few books so far but this narrator was by far the best. I like how Jill Smith emphasized certain words or situations Also she did not sound as if she was the men speaking in the story but how a woman would quote a man in her life. It was like listening to how a friend would share an event to me. I really liked that.
4.5 Stars I was the winner of an audiobook from the author’s newsletter which I voluntarily chose to listen and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The second adventure for Professor and Mrs. Moriarty. With a tagline that states, “Behind every master criminal, there’s a brilliant woman with expensive tastes.” How could this book be anything but wonderful? I fell in love with Angelina (Mrs.) in the first book and was thrilled that she once again plays a major role in this book. I must admit that this paperback has been sitting on my shelf for almost a year but the anticipation was worth it as Anna Castle delivers a well researched and developed story every time.
The scenes created between Angelina and her sister Viola were crisp with banter that makes you want to be in the family. Along with a menagerie of characters from every social and economic level, this story made me slow down and enjoy all aspects of the spectacle. I think I may be more of a fan of the spin-off Sherlock Holmes stories than the original.
I have read the first 2 books in the series & am looking forward to reading more. The characters are definitely memorable, as Holmes, Watson, and Moriarty are obviously spun from Sir Arthur Conandoyle's wonderful works; they are definitely not in the same relationship! This adventure brings the Moriartys into the dangerous world of murdering doctors. While in a private hospital, Angelina Moriarty looks to save her sister whom Angelina believes has been targeted for murder. As Moriarty, Holmes, and Watson look for clues outside the hospital to catch the murderers, Angelina is being drugged & mistreated. Viola, the sister, is now the one who is protecting evidence of the crimes & her sister! Recommended for those who are fans of Sherlock Holmes.
I like the idea of a different take on Moriarty -- he's almost been mistaken as being this villian he is not. On the other hand, the set-up of itself of Moriarty and Mrs. Moriarty are interesting enough, the series might have stood well-enough on its own (with Moriary and Mrs Moriarty have different names) to be its own sleuthing duo in late Victorian England.
I also liked this book better than book 1, because I tend to enjoy plots when characters have to pretend to be other people/different versions of themselves. (I.e. in this one the heroine pretends to be a "nervous" woman that needs a doctor's care.)
Moriarty is newly married and bored when Sherlock Holmes comes knocking at his door, wanting to enlist his wife in a risky scheme to investigate suspicious deaths among wealthy women with greedy beneficiaries who have recently been released from a "health spa." In this series, Moriarty is a smart, rigid, but decent human being, while Holmes comes off looking like a smirky jerk. Fine by me. Moriarty's wife admits herself to one of these spas and nearly loses her own life when her undercover role is discovered.
I received this ARC for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book. Have not read book 1 so I'll have to go back and discover that, but this book was well written and delved into the egos of two men, Moriarty and Holmes and whether they can put their differences and distrust of each other aside, to solve the mystery of whether a doctor is guilty of killing his patients. And will this case draw James Moriarty and Angelina Moriarty together or cause them to draw apart?
Love this author. Her research is impeccable and her writing playful. She treats her readers with as much respect and care as she does her characters. I feel smarter reading these books. Anna Castle doesn't skimp on language and her treatment of a well-known fictional character- James Moriarty- is fabulous. I found myself rooting for James and his love, Lina. Book 2 delves into the world of asylums in the 19th century. Worth the read

Wow I never thought this could actually happen. But there is a first time for everything. This evil plot as Moriarty and his new bride on an undercover mission to foil some doctors plans. Many murders committed and looked like accidental deaths. A really good series soo far! I love it. Sherlock Holmes fans will love this series!
In 1885 Sherlock Holmes asks for the help of the Moriarty couple, or more precisely Mrs Moriarty. As he suspects one or several doctors at a private nursing home of murder. A home for rich ladies and impatient heirs. Enjoyed the story, it was well-written and I liked the characters, and the interplay between Holmes and Professor Moriarty.
I really enjoyed this book! The characters, the descriptions and the storyline kept me involved throughout this tale of murder, mental health treatments of the 19th century and the lengths that a seemingly rag-tag group of characters will go in their search for justice and truth.
Moriarty, Angelina and Sherlock Holmes really get into an insane amount of trouble in this delightful read. The second book in this series made me fall in love with the quirky characters and characterizations of Cockney’s and the elite of London society. “The gang” comes together nicely in an action-packed ending. Wants me dying to read third book in series
This was another fine tale of Sherlock Holmes nemesis Professor Moriarty and his wife. There is an insane asy,um involved and dressing up as women! Well, maybe that was just discussed. It was fun. Jill Smith was a good narrator, though Holmes voice grates on ones nerves. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I truly enjoyed this book. I loved the storyline and the characters. I enjoy the banter and rivalry between Holmes and Moriarty. I can't wait to read more books by this author.
Again, This is a wonderful book. The word has probably been over used, but I have enjoyed this spin off series of the Holmes Mythos more than most and I am will be reading the third volume when I finish here. I hope that she continues the series.
Another fun read that continues the adventures of James Moriarty and his wife Lina. The first adventure threw them together, this one makes them truly a married couple and a team. In the tradition of Sherlock Holmes, but definitely with a woman's touch.
The narrator brings the whole story to life with her excellent voices. I was a Sherlock fan and now I'm loving this new look at Professor Moriarty and his feisty wife. Great story and twisty mystery. If you like audiobooks, this one is worth getting.
Another fine novel in the Professor and Mrs. Moriarity Mystery series. I liked how the couple's newlywed insecurities were tested by the case, and the villains are appropriately nefarious. Castle is very good at what she does and is a worthy successor to Arthur Conan Doyle.
The Professor and the Mrs are having a bit of a rough time right now. Such an amazing series. Won a paperback and am definitely reading it more than once.
A bit slow at first; the book quickly moves into top gear with all the events coming at you. It ended with an appropriate crescendo, and a happy ending.
This is the second in the series. I am just all over mysteries lately. Anything where I don't have to think very much. Pure escapism. Thank you, Anna Castle.
I enjoyed this book more than I did the first. The characters are better developed now that their relationship is clear and they work together really well.
