There is simply no getting around the fact that this borrows heavily from "Hostel," but hey, nothing new under the sun and all that jazz, right? What this book does much better than "Hostel" is get right down to the bloody business. No foreplay, no mucking about--we came here for literary torture-porn and that's what author Tim Miller gives us without teasing around the proverbial bush.
Miller's stripped-down, no-frills, matter-of-fact style is put to good use here as he details the strap-'em-down-and-make-'em-bleed torments of the titular club. In fact, one scene in particular, involving a newborn baby, may be a gag-inducing deal-breaker for some readers. God knows that sequence is going to stick with me for awhile! That said, this is extreme horror, and lines are meant to be crossed, taboos violated, good taste thrown out the window along with the contents of the barf bucket. If you pick up a Tim Miller novel expecting something tame, prepare to have your expectations effed up seven ways from Sunday.
Listen, Miller ain't for everybody. But if you can handle it raw and rough, he may just put a big ol' smile on your face ... or across your throat.
This sure was fun. Imagine the movie hostel. But instead of the rich people doing the deed in some crappy warehouse, they're torturing people from a mansion country club. The gore was fun. The ending turned into more of an action story, but that part was short. Overall, this is a good book
I enjoyed reading this; almost like a novella. Not for you if you don't take over the top gore well. After reading the reviews I think I will try another Tim Miller book
I love Tim Miller. His books always deliver exactly what I'm looking for, including plenty of moments where I have to shake my head in amazement. He really does remind me of a cruder Richard Laymon, but in a good way. His books never get dull or monotonous. This is the third book by him that I've read ( the other two being the Hell, Texas books) and it was excellent. Yes, there are similarities to Hostel, but the idea works well in book form.
I took a star off because it didn't measure up to the Hell, Texas books.
I'm glad there are sequels and will continue to read Mr. Miller. That he reminds me of Laymon is the highest compliment I can offer. HIGHLY recommended.
“This place is where people like me get to fulfill their every dream, fantasy and desire. This is also a place where people like you will learn a new definition of pain and suffering like you never knew existed.”
With The Country Club, Tim Miller broke his record with how far into the book he made me sick, TWO PERCENT!! New record! And that's a compliment, lol! The Country Club is like The Hostile, which if you liked that movie, you'll love the book. It has it's own great gory spin to it. Of course I love when the cattle prob is mentioned, I don't think it's a Tim Miller book if the Cattle Prob doesn't have a cameo in it. I'm really hoping Tim makes a sequel and gives us The Country Club 2... A girl can wish!
I prefer psychological horror over gore for gore's sake, which should be a last resort. That being said, I have no problem with gore, especially when it's over-the-top as in this book. The problems I had are that the indents aren't in the same place and there are too many grammar & syntax errors that should've been edited out, which give it an amateur feel. But the story and extreme horror were both pro, so success!
In the credits I read that no author goes as far as Tim does. I don't really think that's true. Edward Lee can be pretty gross, and there's nothing I wouldn't resort to, but Tim's a new author to watch out for.
Reminded me of the movie Hostel but I think this book was more gory. If your not into gory and disturbing books then I definitely recommend you don't read this book.
This is not just a horror story, this is all-out gore at it's most extreme. If you are even slightly squeamish, I suggest you sit this one out rather than leave unfair reviews complaining that this book was far too sick for your liking.
Tim Miller is fast becoming one of my favourite writers. I was impressed with Hell, Texas and have proceeded to download every other title onto my Kindle. I am currently spoilt for choice. This particular story didn't let me down. It's true to say that there are a few typos dotted through the book, but you can see past them. Some of the plotlines were a little flimsy for my liking, some events were just a bit too coincidental and the characters were slightly flaky. However, all the negatives were overshadowed once I got into the thick of the book. The action was relentless and the twists kept on coming 'round every corner.
Yes, it was very sick in parts, totally pushing-the-boundaries of decency shocking. Gore-hounds looking for a writer of the Laymon ilk will love this book.
Wow, I was into this from the beginning. At first I began to compare it to the Hostel movies as there are some similarities. But this book can stand alone and apart. I found it even more terrifying.
Crystal is a blogger who wants to uncover the Country Club. A supposedly private club for the rich and elite to live out their fantasies of killing and torture. She confines some friends to go with her when she gets a tip on where the club is located. What will happen then? Well you have to read to find out. Just let me say that it takes a lot to make my stomach turn. This book did it.
What is truly scary, is how you can see how a place like this could come to be. Gruesome horror at its best! This is a must read!
I was not disappointed with this book. With nods to the movie - Hostel - The Country Club takes it's readers on a wild and crazy ride through the super secret world of the extremely rich and the poor unfortunate "cattle" that happen to meet there doom at the exclusive club. This book is definitely not lacking in story or gore!!! Tim Miller tells a story that reads like a movie and leaves his readers needing more when they reach the last page. I cannot wait to read the rest of this series and see what horrific delights Mr. Miller has in store for me ;-)
If you are a fan of good story telling and lots of blood...this book will satisfy both of those needs. I highly recommend this book!!! Well Done Mr. Miller!!!
Tim Miller may quickly be becoming my new favorite author. I've now read this, in addition to Family Night, and Night of Vengeance. He continues to write dark horror. I really enjoy the dark imagination and twisted characters with graphic violence.
I do feel that the way in which some characters came into the story was more of a stretch than in his other works. but I am thoroughly entertained and look forward to what his next work will be about. I like where he has been going with his recent bouts of creativity.
This story kept me on the edge of my seat. I didn't know what was going to happen on page to the next, was cheering for Crystal,Sophia and Brett. I was stunned when I read the first chapter and then the story snowballed, I was warning them not Togo but try did not listen. When you read about everything going o in the country cub you just want them to destroy our and everyone associated with it. Loved this book. Great read. Is there another one? Hope so.
am not going to rate this book since I haven't finished it...I just couldn't! This is not my normal genre and even reading some of the reviews before I even started it I thought: well, how terrible can it really be? It's just a story! But no! There are some truly unspeakable things being done to women and they are described so well and lively that I just couldn't take any more. I am just not the audience the author is going for.
For the horror fans out there who love a gruesome good ol' bloodbath of a read this is for you! There were even moments where my stomach churned in reaction! This author really knows his horror and the story is an easy one to follow and enjoy if you truly love horror. I'm so glad I found this author and am reading more by him for sure!
When i started to read this book the first thing that popped into my head was the movie Hostel... I was wrong, this is so much better. I really didn't want to put this book down and could have quite easily gone awol from work. However this would prevent me from earning money to buy more books from this author. Found another awesome horror writer.
I was in a serious book slump...but not anymore. Leave it to Tim Miller to drag me, kicking and screaming, back to my love of reading. Excellent storyline, I so hope there's a sequel.
Where to start? Anything marketed as "extreme horror" these days is usually lying, but Miller did a pretty GPS job off grossing me out. It might have just been a fluke that this one hit my own personal gross-out factors, but the horror was genuinely horrific. A÷ on that front.
Now, the characters--this is a little more shaky. Almost everyone's arc is decent except Joel's. It felt pretty bad when this character who is shown to be a happy, funny kind of guy, starts rationalizing rape after a single line from the bad guy. Either Joel needed to show signs of being terrible prior to that conflict, or that conflict needed to go away. I, the reader, felt pretty cheated at that point.
But in any case, Miller remains one of my favorite Extreme Horror writers working right now. Much, much better than Matt Shaw any day of the week.
Mr. Miller's motive for this book is clear: To deliver a novella that will shock readers and make their insides twist uncomfortably. He succeeded with me and for that, he got his five stars!
And I have to admit that the fact that I know these towns well (Round Rock, for example) made it all the more gut-twisting!
Pure action, full of gore and unthinkable depravity, definitely not for the weak. If you find yourself with this book, and it is too much for you, do not give Mr. Miller a low rating because YOU WERE WARNED. And who knows, /they/ just might come after you and bring you to the country club...
If you enjoyed "Hacked" by Tim Miller, you'll like this one.
It's full of extreme gore, sexual content, and language. There are lots of fucked up people in fucked up situations. The plot is pretty straightforward and feels like a horror movie. The book is short and the last part and ending felt rushed and somewhat unrealistic. Overall, if you're a splatterpunk fan, you'll probably like this one.
This book is like hostel and Serbian film had a baby. It’s a crazy journey with all the different characters in the book. I loved that it went back and forth between the different characters and towards the end, they all came together. Easy read and kept me interested the entire story. I’ll be reading more by Tim Miller that’s for sure.
I’m so glad I started this book. Fast paced, brutal and believable, very very deep. I connected with Tim’s deeper concepts and fell in love with characters. So yeah, next book please.
