Debating Catholicism

Rate this book
This omnibus volume contains the complete text of four The Bible Battle , High Desert Showdown , Tracking Down the True Church , and Face Off with an Ex-Priest . They are edited transcripts of public debates Karl Keating had with prominent anti-Catholics, men who devoted all or large parts of their careers to opposing the Church of Rome and its distinctive teachings.
The topics discussed and the arguments used, on both sides, are perennial. So, unfortunately, are the misconceptions and imprecisions exhibited by Keating’s opponents. He tried to correct those misconceptions and adjust those imprecisions in the heat of public exchanges. How did he fare? Was the Catholic faith vindicated or vanquished? Karl Keating is the author of Catholicism and Fundamentalism , Booked for The Bibliographic Memoir of an Accidental Apologist , The New Geocentrists , the How to Fail at Hiking series, and other works. His avocations include backpacking, studying languages, and playing the baroque mandolino. His author website is karlkeating.com.

Karl Keating (b. 1950), a prominent Catholic apologist and author, is the founder and president of Catholic Answers, a lay apostolate of Catholic apologetics and evangelization.

He received his undergraduate degree in Applied Math at UCSD in 1972 and went on to get a J.D. at the University of San Diego. He worked as an attorney practicing civil law in the early 1980s.

Leaving Mass one Sunday, he found anti-Catholic tracts on the windshields of the cars in the church parking lot. He wrote his own tract in reply and distributed copies of it at the Fundamentalist church responsible for the anti-Catholic tract. That was the start of what has become the country’s largest lay-run apologetics and evangelization organization.

Catholic Answers was incorporated in 1982, and in 1988 Karl left the practice of law and went into apostolic work full time. That year marked the publication of his Catholicism and Fundamentalism, the first book to deal extensively with challenges posed by “Bible Christians.” Other books followed: What Catholics Really Believe, Nothing But the Truth, The Usual Suspects, and Controversies. He is at work on several more titles.

For nine years Karl served as the editor of This Rock. He has been a columnist for the National Catholic Register and the Canadian Catholic Review and has written for many other publications. Each Tuesday he answers questions on “Catholic Answers Live.” His avocations include backpacking (his favorite locales are the High Sierra and the Grand Canyon) and flying.

Four great discussions, in which Karl Keating does a wonderful job using piercing logic, history, and scripture to defend The One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church, founded by Our Lord Jesus Christ on the rock of St. Peter. Demonstrates how making a few key points in response to a long monologue of attacks is the best and most effective way to help others to see and process for themselves the truth of the Catholic faith. Highly recommended.

Entertaining and Erudite

Karl Keating is a soft spoken man who knows Catholic history, theology and the Bible. These four excellent debates against ‘professional’ anti Catholics Scott are both informative and inspirational to this Catholic. The writing, condensing and editing are excellent.

Absorbing

Mr.Keating’s presentation is totally absorbing. I enjoyed the book very much. As a professional psychologist I realize that rarely people change what they believe! This is true especially when people argue. True dialogue is when people share with love and compassion.

These four debates are not necessarily relevant to average Catholics. But will be of great value to any fallen away Catholic or those who are On the fence.

Aunque bien preparado el autor de este libro (quién es católico) sin duda se queda corto en muchos de los argumentos que expone. Una muestra de que el catolicismo Romano es indefendible.

Great reminder of classical apologetics style

My 1st catholic book when I came back to Catholicism was Keating's Catholicism and fundamentalism about 17 years ago.
I was later acquainted with other apologists, like Robert Sungenis.
While I prefer the exegetical style of apologetics, not everyone is a James White type of Protestant.
This book reminded me of the importance of the classical style.
Great arguments.
I had my kindle read this to me in about 3 hours. Highly recommended.

I found this book to be very readable. Sometimes non fiction books can become slower or harder to get into, but this book provides plenty of drama and back and forth with the debate transcripts template. I greatly appreciate the work of Karl Keating.
