Amjad Islam Amjad is an Urdu poet, drama writer and lyricist from Pakistan. He has written many columns, translation, criticism and essays but his main focus remained writing Nazms, a type of Urdu poetry. Amjad is the writer of many drama series for Pakistan Television Corporation including Waris. Among his other notable dramas are Dehleez, Samandar, Raat, Waqt and Apnay Loug. He has received many awards for his literary work and screenplay for TV, including Pride of Performance and Sitara-e-Imtiaz from Government of Pakistan.
Waris was one of the most popular drama series to air on Pakistan Television during its golden age.
Amjad Islam Amjad's series was a smash hit with audiences. The streets used to become deserted and the entire country was riveted for the duration of the series.
The effect across the border in India, was equally remarkable. Those who could watch it,never missed it.There were several PTV plays from that era, which were as popular in India,as some Bollywood movies were in Pakistan.
Waris is the story of a village landlord and his grandsons, set against the backdrop of rural Punjab and its traditions, with lots of twists and turns. It is also memorable for Mehboob Alam's masterly portrayal of Chaudhry Hashmat,a once in a lifetime role.
Chaudhry Hashmat is a vicious character, and a very realistic one at that.He has his minions to do his bidding. He has an absolute rascal of a grandson and another who is much better. And a third, whom he doesn't acknowledge.Which one of them would be his heir (waris) ?
There is a fair bit of violence,a feature of life in rural Punjab. There's lots of drama and there's plenty of suspense.
This book is the novelization of Waris, published before the youtube era.The entire play can be seen on youtube, just search Waris PTV play.
This was probably my first Urdu language novel and it was indeed one of the best! The character development, attention to details and the plot of the novel were anything but extraordinary. Highly recommended.
