Bliss, Texas will never be the same. A murder will make sure of that.
The town Sheriff is fat, happy, and useless. Just like his daddy before him and his dad before that.
Ethel and Velma Harmon should know. They’ve been around for all three.
These two seventy-something sisters-in-law refuse to let their ages slow them down. Especially when there’s a mystery to get tangled up in.
The only thing that takes their time away from the whole ball of yarn is, well, a ball of yarn. Crochet class can’t be missed. No matter what.
But keeping things on track isn’t easy. Not with old high school boyfriends that still think they’re eighteen and overly friendly mailmen offering up winks.
Throw in a dead candidate for mayor, a gender-confused cat, and a splinter-giving park bench, and you’re in for one heck of a time.
Come fall in love with these two funny old ladies as they solve the small-town crime of who killed the new guy running for mayor, and make blankets, shawls, and the occasional pair of panties—one stitch at a time.
BK is a pen name for a couple of good friends who love reading a good mystery and are as cheeky as they come. Murder She Wrote was one of their favorite childhood shows and there wasn't a day that went by that they were getting into trouble looking for a mystery in the neighborhood to solve. With a ton of ideas and imagination, you're in for a funny wild ride.
They live in Texas and enjoy BBQ and sweet tea more than anyone should become aware of!
A decent plot but I really didn't like the characters. They could have been really funny but they just turned into really short tempered, grumpy old women. The two have lived together for years and although they constantly argue they do care about each other. Now they have something else to think about - the body of the man running for mayor. Although everyone tries to tell them it was a suicide, they're not buying it. Can they prove that it wasn't and that it was murder? Watch as they pit their wits against the suspects and the local police force.
While not a totally original idea it was a cute story. The lack of editing was extremely annoying. Sentences that don't read properly and wrong words constantly.
kindle unlimited, not funny, no real mystery, and unlike some who gave bad reviews for 'language' that was not my issue other than seemed to be forced so not in least bit really funny, but loaded with typos and no spell checks ever done, btw no it's not going to catch when you put there for their etc, THAT is what YOU are supposed to CHECK for, and MAYBE wouldn't have caught as many IF my reader hadn't been acting up so couldn't just listen to it, but for a legally blind 'reader' to catch all those issues mean this book was definitely not checked properly and the extras/interactions etc to storyline were boring and drug out for no reason, then on top of that, though guess ended up being good thing, was promised free sequel which after 2 days now still has not showed up, another so called professional writer/s issue of which there were way too many, glad can just toss it out of my mind now, what mindless addlebrained dreck
Oh my gosh...so glad I read this book! I am so used to serious mysteries, but I absolutely loved this cozy mystery! Being able to laugh and imagine these characters in real life while at the same time working on figuring out the mystery keep me so interested and intrigued I didn't want to put the book down! I am so looking forward to reading more books with these characters.
Maybe I am being grumpy this week but I didn't find this book very funny despite the overly obvious efforts by the authors (yes, 2 authors with one pen name.) The book needs a good proofreader to fix the many typos and other errors. The story itself is okay if a bit repetitive. Most of the humorous attempts are based on the ages of the 2 main protagonists and their relationship to each other. These 70+ year old women are sisters-in-law that share a house ever since the husband of one and brother of the other died many years ago. The differences in personalities between them leads to a lot of mild bickering. One is a church going optimist (Ethyl) while the other (Velma) is more pragmatic and much less socially inclined. They have a cat named Miss Vicky that got the name while it was very young and has since proved, at least to Velma, that it is a male cat. The other seems to live in denial of the situation. When they accidentally come across a dead body Velma decides solving the case is the way to get out of her "old-age" rut and put some adventure and problem solving back into her life. Since she doesn't have a license, Ethyl gets dragged along on the search for clues while all she wants to do is go to crochet class and sit on a bench at the park while working on her crocheting projects. Also, neither wants to do things without the other which results in a lot of half-hearted complaining by both as they spend time doing what the other wants.
Dearly departed from the storyline... Coroner to Coroner by author BK Baxter is a story I was very much looking forward to reviewing as it was different from the usual books I review. The premise of the story sounded like it had all the right elements for a successful read and for the most part it did. However it did fall short in a couple of areas. What sets up a book to put a reader in a foul mood is not having an editor or good human proofer review the book one last time before going to publication. Within the first couple of paragraphs there were wrong tenses of words, missing words, and misspelling of words. Sad to say some of these issues continued throughout the book. Then there are the main characters, Velma and Ethel. While I think the author wanted them to come across as original, quirky (swear a lot) and multidimensional older women. Instead, they first appeared as unbelievable, stereotypical older women. However as the focus became more about solving the mystery it became less of an issue about the women. So, after finishing this story my feelings toward it were diminished probably because the most damage was done from the first five chapters of the book. I implore the author before the release of the next book to make sure the editor/proofer has done their due diligence. I am volunteering to leave a review of this advanced review book.
Take two seemingly sweet little old ladies and mix in a murder mystery. Then tell those sweet little old ladies “to let the police handle it”. Obviously, the authorities who told them this have never heard the old adage that ‘women and cats will do as they please’. Because that’s exactly what Velma, and Ethel who’s along for the ride, proceeds to do. She doesn’t trust that the local police won’t make a hash of it, and by being there to discover the body, she’s got a vested interest in seeing the murderer brought to justice. Along the way we meet many of the other quirky residents of Bliss and learn a little of the Harmon family history. Velma and Ethel are a lot like a female version of the Odd Couple and I had a lot of fun watching their antics. I look forward to seeing what trouble they get into next. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.
Review: 2 stars I purchased a copy of the Bliss, Texas cozy mystery Coroner to Coroner The Yarn-Over Series: Book 1 by B.K. Baxter and this review was given freely. Feisty characters with colorful language and at times ribald humor encompass the pages of this engaging murder mystery featuring the hard core crochet class attendees, seventy-something sisters-in-law,Thelma and Velma Harmon. The plot and pithy interactions held my interest but the delivery needs work.
Review: 3 stars I purchased a copy of the Bliss, Texas cozy mystery She'll Stitch You Up:The Yarn-Over Series: Book 2 by B.K. Baxter and this review was given freely. Fast paced, with colorful language, family scenes and a romance crazed Ethel. Ethel and Velma along with Ray and Calvin find themselves invited to a recognition party only to find one of the guests and the host murdered.
I did not care for the first 20% of the book at all. The main characters were not persons I would like. Velma was rude and on the verge of being a bully. She does not excuse her behavior. Brian's sister-in-law seemed overly religious. I thought I had inadvertently bought a Christian book. But I am glad I stuck with the book to the end. I think the author was trying too hard to make the characters quirky. It toned down a lot and the mystery became the focus of the book. There was to religious preaching, so it was ok for me on that front. And as the book progressed, Velma's softer side peeked out, for very short periods of time. But enough to see she was likeable. So, I did end up enjoying the book.
This was a first time read for B.K. Baxter. While I typically do not select a mystery, I was pleasantly surprised by the talent displayed throughout. I enjoyed the dialog, the storyline as well as these two amazingly crafted main characters; Velma and Ethel. I try extremely hard never to give away stories and I do love a good book. I think that reader's would actually like this release.
I voluntarily requested an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for my honest/voluntarily given opinion and I recommend it. Nicely done.
Just couldn’t like the characters. It has been updated since the complaints about poor proof reading. Still don’t think they caught all of them, but it’s no longer glaring. However it is very clear, to me at least, that this book was written by a team. I only made it four chapters before ceasing to care about the flirting, rickety car, poor eyesight and gender confused cat. Too many things going on that serve no purpose except to prove that one woman is religious, and the other one is cross and curses unnecessarily.
To feisty elderly ladies Ethel and Velma Harmon from Bliss, Texas discover a body. Velma takes it upon herself to try to solve this mans murder with Ethel as her sidekick. This book will have you laughing out loud with the antics of curmudgeonly Velma. A small town comfy murder with a cast of characters that leads the reader along with Velma and Ethel's investigation. A good read from three authors who collaborated in bringing this series to life.
This is a different type of story than I usually review for, but I was willing to give it a chance. The storyline has a lot of major potential, but with that being said, the characters need a lot of work. These two old ladies have a lot of “quirks” that seem to take away from the story. There are funny parts of course, but the demeanor and language isn’t off putting.
I’m voluntarily reviewing an advanced reader copy of this book.
Hello and thank you for writing this series! In my normally humdrum life I don't get a lot of excitement, because I'm surrounded by a bunch of cranky older ladies. I adored this book mainly for the almost peeing my pants two times while reading it humor!!! Really I'm serious! Please write more!!! I'm begging you!! I'm already hooked. Line and sinker!
I couldn't wait to start this series, but now I am a little disappointed. I don't use profanity, so I found it unnecessary. Growing up, my father had a colorful vocabulary, but I made a choice not to use it in my home as an adult. Maybe it was suppose to be funny and add to Velma's character...The mystery was excellent, with many suspects to keep you guessing. I have the next book in the series, but I'm going to save it for later.
Thus is a story about two women in their 70's and sisters-in-law. The characters are a bit funny, a bit rude and quite human. They couldn't be much different, but it seems to work for them. The plot is easily followed and the premise is finding out how the new guy running for mayor died. The answers were hard won and there was lots of interaction between the "sisters", but the person responsible was found and justice was served. I do recommend this book.
Coroner to Coroner was a fun and exciting mystery, I am not a real big mystery fan but I found this to be a hilariously entertaining story with some really great characters, you can’t help but fall for Velma and Ethel they fill like they are like two lovable great aunts. The whole storyline was great. I wholeheartedly recommend this fun start to a new series.
Great quirky and funny tale of two old sister-in-laws that live together and raise their own kind of hell in their town. They deal with overly friendly old high school guys, a cat who you can't figure out if it's make or female and a dead man who was running for Mayor. I can only hope I have that much fun when I get to be that age!
Being old myself (67), I thought I'd enjoy this one a lot more than I did. The two gals together were ok but the "mystery" wasn't very interesting. I've read other books in this "genre" that were much better. The author(s) really should get a proofreader - typos don't usually bother me but there were so many words missing, grammatical errors and typos that were just far too distracting.
The story was pretty good, a little light, but that's ok. What kept it from being enjoyable though, was the amazing number of typos, grammatical errors, spelling errors, etc! Even getting the character's names mixed up a couple of times! Whoever prepares books for the Kindle format needs to pay closer attention to detail!
The main characters want to solve the mystery of who killed a mayoral candidate they feel would have been an improvement over the incumbent. Unfortunately, they are at one another's and their neighbor's throats with unpleasantries, accusations, mild cursing to such a high degree that the author dulled the plot. There was no let up to the constant bickering, and no character development. This book was not pleasant on any level.
Who needs 2 grumpy old men when you have 2 Grumpy Old Woman like Velma and Ethel. This is a new genre for this set of authors and for the first book, it's a good start. The book will have you laughing at these two crazy ladies and wonder what will be the next thing they get themselves into. Enjoy.
Without profane language, this is a tale of mystery solved with a visble story line and plot. It is a refreshing change, showing that a good writer can still pen an enjoyable story without the gutter talk.
I enjoyed this book because it is full of humor yet still a mystery.I also like the fact that the heroines of the story are elderly ladies proving that older people are still able to do things
Too much description. Tedious read. I finished it out of curiosity as to who did it, which was an OK ending, but I had to flip through many many pages since the dialogue and plot did not hold my interest.
Looking for a who did it mystery with humor, look no further. You have two old ladies who happen to be sisters-in-laws living together. They stumble a pond a dead body. From there is a heart pounding adventure for them. Loved the characters. Can’t wait to read more.
This book could be staring your Nana! It's a well written, light hearted, tickle your funny bone book. Your gonna enjoy it and laugh. Quick laughable read. Enjoy
I thought the characters were funny. They were old and grumpy and crotchety but loving , kind of like me. I even crochet so I guess I was identifying with them in a way. I didn't want to put the book down so read it in one sitting. Cute storyline. I enjoyed reading this.
