Elena Aitken is a USA Today Bestselling Author of more than forty romance and women’s fiction novels. Living a stone’s throw from the Rocky Mountains with her teenager twins, their two cats and a goofy rescue dog, Elena escapes into the mountains whenever life allows. She can often be found with her toes in the lake and a glass of wine in her hand, dreaming up her next book and working on her own happily ever after with her very own mountain man.
The straightforward romances set in the Canadian Rockies, are a connects set of short novels where the girl meets guy, there is some conflict to resolve, girl gets guy, resolves conflict and everyone lives happily ever after. Not complicated, very easy to read. I don't know that I'd call them hot or steamy though.
I dove into Jami Alden’s Mountain Men of Castle Lodge series (books 1-3) via ebook, hoping for some swoony, rugged romance with a cozy mountain vibe. Aimed at adults, these contemporary romances promise heartwarming love stories set in a small-town lodge, but the lack of depth, repetitive tropes, and vanilla spice made this a mostly disappointing read. Here’s the breakdown of each book.
Book 1: Unexpected Kisses
Rating: 3/5 Stars
Unexpected Kisses kicks off the series with a black-and-white romance that’s as straightforward as it gets. You could skip the entire first chapter and still predict every beat by the end—boy meets girl, sparks fly, happily-ever-after (HEA) ensues. It’s not a cliffhanger, but the ending feels oddly unfinished, like it’s missing a final punch to tie it all together. The insta-love vibe is strong here, which is fine for a quick read, but there’s no real depth to the characters or their relationship. The female main character (FMC) and male main character (MMC) are likable enough but forgettable, with no real quirks or emotional layers to make them stand out. The spice is pure vanilla—decent but nothing spicy or memorable. It’s a breezy, no-frills romance that’s okay if you’re in the mood for something light and predictable, but it doesn’t leave a lasting impression.
This one’s fine for a quick escape, but don’t expect anything groundbreaking. It’s a solid middle-of-the-road start to the series, earning a 3/5 for being inoffensive but shallow.
Book 2: Hidden Kisses
Rating: 2/5 Stars
Hidden Kisses takes the same black-and-white romance formula from book one and tosses in a kid, which adds a layer of first-time parenting fears to the mix. Sounds promising, but it’s not. The story follows a predictable arc—boy meets girl, they navigate some family drama, love blooms. It’s not quite insta-love like the first book, but it’s close, and the pacing feels rushed in all the wrong ways. The FMC and MMC are just as bland as in book one, with no real depth to make you care about their struggles or romance. The parenting angle could’ve added emotional weight, but it’s handled so superficially that it feels like a plot device rather than a meaningful theme. The spice? Vanilla again, and not even particularly steamy.
After reading Unexpected Kisses, this one was frustratingly repetitive. It’s like Alden recycled the same formula with a kid thrown in for variety, but it didn’t make the story any more exciting. It was a slog to get through, and I found myself skimming just to finish. 2/5 stars for being a slightly weaker retread of the first book.
Book 3: Mistaken Kisses
Rating: 1/5 Stars
Oh man, Mistaken Kisses was a struggle. Reading these three books back-to-back was definitely a mistake, and this one suffered the most for it. By book three, the fluff, vanilla spice, and lack of depth became unbearable. It felt like I was rereading the first two novels, just with a new set of characters swapped in. The FMC and MMC follow the same predictable arc—meet, clash, fall in love—with no surprises or emotional stakes to keep things fresh. The romance is so formulaic it’s almost painful, and the characters are as forgettable as ever, with no growth or spark to make them stand out.
The vanilla spice, which was tolerable in book one, felt monotonous by this point, and the lack of depth made every scene feel like a copy-paste job. My brain was begging for something—anything—to shake things up, but Mistaken Kisses just doubled down on the same tired tropes. It’s like the series ran out of steam and just kept chugging along anyway. 1/5 stars for being a repetitive, uninspired slog that tested my patience.
Overall Thoughts
The Mountain Men of Castle Lodge series has a cozy premise—rugged guys, small-town vibes, and romance at a charming lodge—but it falls flat due to repetitive storytelling, shallow characters, and predictable plots. Each book feels like a carbon copy of the last, with no real depth or surprises to keep you hooked. The vanilla spice is fine for a quick read but gets old fast, especially when you’re reading them back-to-back. The insta-love (or near-insta-love) and lack of emotional complexity make the characters forgettable, and the series as a whole feels like it’s coasting on fluff without substance.
Aimed at adults who enjoy light contemporary romance, this series might work for readers who want easy, predictable love stories with minimal stakes. But if you’re looking for depth, memorable characters, or anything beyond basic romance tropes, you’ll be disappointed. Reading all three in a row amplified the repetitiveness, so I’d suggest spacing them out if you’re curious. I’m not rushing to continue the series.
Final Thoughts: Mountain Men of Castle Lodge Books 1-3 is a fluffy but shallow romance series that’s predictable and repetitive. Fine for a quick, no-brainer read, but it lacks the depth to stand out. Average rating: 2/5 stars for a meh experience that could’ve been so much more.

Mistaken gifts
A high maintenance city girl Eva runs on passion for her work. A rough around the edges cowboy Jeff who can do anything for his friends. Both met at lodge for common motive that wedding of Colin and Andi goes well.

But pulling off the perfect wedding isn't going to be easy, especially with Jeff, the all too handsome cowboy determined to get in her way.

Because, he doesn't want anything goes wrong at the wedding by his side , at first he doesn't allow horses at the wedding. But conversation with Eva and her try to convincing him to let the policy go for this time.
The sparks that keep flying between them are definitely keeping things interesting and there's no way either of them can deny the attraction between them. But then she lied after taking Troy to be his date even though few knows it's a fake arrangement to keep Jeff at bay and Jeff has his career rise moments when Hollywood director came to him with job and Marina have something for Jeff but Cupid make a move Eva and Jeff fall for each other , but only if they can get out of their own way long enough to see what they could have together as couple.
Enjoyed book one apart from Andi being a bit weak in standing up to Blaine. Liked the characters introduced. Book 2 - hate players and disliked Bo, what a douche, Mr I Can’t Commit. All he could say was he was a coward for dumping his daughter. Book 3 - a waste of my time. Liked Eva and wanted to read her story but just too annoying. Book one was the best and found the quick wrap up endings, after a problem about another woman, too trite. Won’t be reading the rest.
These three sweetly romantic books set in The Castle Mountain Lodge were great reads. Each one tells the story of a different couple and a the characters from the first book pop up in the following stories. Andi and Colin's story is a funny and heartwarming. Bo and Morgan's story is heartbreaking but has a happy ending and Eva and Jeff's story is sweet and also includes Andi and Colins wedding. I enjoyed these books, they are a fun read with happy endings.
I loved how the lodge brought them together. And they all knew each other. It's hard to hold my interest in three books but they did make me want to laugh cry and be upset with them.dif
Love it and will look forwoid to more stories at the lodge. The author us good and has a feel for love
This book takes you through the journey of three couples falling in love. Andi and Colin, Marianne and Bo, Eva and Jeff, the women each struggle with their issues while the men struggle with the idea of actually falling in love. Each was enthralling, I didn't want them to end. This was box set #1, I will be checking the next one out for sure.
A kindle bargain ! 3 books in the Castle Lodge Series starts off with Unexpected Kisses - Collin and Andi's story. Set around a romantic Mountain Resort at Christmas. The resort is overbooked which pushes them to share a villa and time together over the holidays. The other 2 books in this set are just as good.
This was the first time I have read a book by this author, and the first book was so well written, the characters just flowed through the book and you were cheering them on. The second and third book were also good, but were pretty much predictable. Not sure if I want to read the remaining books or not.
The box set contains three earlier-written work updated to include "steamy" scenes. The stories are okay, but there were a couple places that need to be further updated to reflect "steamy" vs "kiss".
This was three different stories. You could read them as standalones, but why would you? The stories flow into one another like there's no break. Very well written, keeps you on your toes. You're always hoping for that HEA.
I enjoyed this series and would definitely recommend it to friends and family. Although you always know how the story will end it was fun watching them get to the happily ever after.
I thoroughly enjoyed these stories. Glad the author added the short story to continue with Andi's story to lead us into Eva's. I am now looking forward to continuing onto the next books in the series.
i found this on Bookbub for free. love the read. book cover is so festival. i love a good cozy warm read. book 1 from "The Castle Mtn Lodge Collection". came out November 6, 2016. holiday romance (kindle store & books) romance collection & anthologies. will read more soon.
Lots of heat between the leads. Believable/relatable challenges, before they could reach their happily ever after. Great side characters. Enjoyed the descriptions of the scenery
While these are the steamy version they aren't off the charts, which is a good thing to me! Loved the stories of these couples that were all set in the mountains. My favorite was probably book 2 because it has a sweet little girl in the story. Enjoy!
Unexpected Kisses Christmas represents everything Andi Williams is supposed to have, and doesn't. Running away to a remote mountain lodge in the Canadian Rockies sounds like the perfect way to escape, until a mix-up finds her sharing a villa with sexy, rough around the edges, Colin Hartford. Colin's determination to enjoy the holiday he's missed for the last five years sweeps Andi into a season of joy that she's not sure she's ready for. Andi has had a terrible year and the Christmas season is much too difficult for her and all the reminders of what she was supposed to have. Colin is more than happy to add Andi to his holiday plans and is deeply interested in her and why she is so sad. I enjoyed reading about them connecting over the days leading up to Christmas and how both of them change.
Hidden Kisses Morgan's looking to hide out from her life, but what she's not counting on is Bo, the handsome and rugged mountain guide at The Lodge who has his own heartache to bear and his troubled little girl who sneaks her way into Morgan's heart. Opening her heart again means opening herself up to the hurt that threatened to destroy her once. But if she can let down her guard long enough, Morgan might just see that everything she's been looking for is right in front of her. Bo has been happy with his lifestyle, he has had no reason to change. Until quite, devastated Ella. He must now face life altering decisions he never thought about. Ella's life is in flux as well, and he must make those decisions. Morgan's life plan has been shattered and she feels only a drastic change will help her cope. She must decide is she is willing and able to help Bo and Ella recover and make future plans. I love Morgan and her resilience. Many of us face similar, devastating diagnosis and we must reevaluate our life plans.
Mistaken Kisses Eva Andrews would do anything for her best friend Andi, especially if it means dropping everything to plan a last minute wedding at Castle Mountain Lodge. But planning the perfect wedding isn't proving to be easy, especially when Jeff Michaels, the rugged and all too good-looking ranch hand, is determined to get in her way. Despite the fact that Jeff knows how to push all of Eva's buttons, there's an attraction between them that can't be denied. But Eva's sworn off men and even if she did allow herself to act on the feelings that keep growing stronger, there's the small matter of her 'fake date' in the way. Eva is a part planner. She is no nonsense and used to getting things accomplished on short notice. She is also heartbroken and finally realizing she wants more than casual relationships, only she cannot seem to find an honest man she is attracted to. To Jeff, she comes off as a spoiled city girl when they first meet. He is at a crossroads in his career and is trying to make the best decision for his future. Eva and Jeff have chemistry and they like to push each others buttons. They are just meeting and there are misconceptions and lies between them. There was a Happy For Now ending and I hope that a later book will revisit their relationship
Great series of novella length , interrelated stories, set at a lodge in the mountains. Unexpected Kiss. Andi , and event planner is not a fan of Christmas. A recent devastating break up and family with holiday plans that don't included her, she just wants to hide. Eve her BFF and business partner has her use their complementary guest reservation to Castle Lodge. When a reservation mix up occurs she finds herself rooming with a friend of her ex's. Colin is home for the holiday for the first time in years. He is at the lodge for the whole holiday ambiance. When he sees Andi, he. Is drawn to her. Colin has been hurt before and doesn't to relationships, but Andi is changing his mind. S fun and steamy story. Loved Colin and Andi.
Hidden Kisses Morgan is a friend of Andi's and after some devastating news she quotes her job and ends up working at the lodge in their day care. Go is a the lead outdoor summer guide and a known player. He is side swiped when a 4 year old girl enters his life and he is now a father. Morgan helps Bo's young daughter adjust to her new circumstances while trying both to hall for her father. A fun and steamy story. Loved Bo and Morgan.
Mistaken Kisses Eve is planning her business partner and best friends wedding. When Andi says she wants a white horse to side in on, Eve thinks she is crazy. Jeff is the manager of the lodge's stable. He is drawn to Eve when she shows up looking for a bourse. A city girl meets cowboy, a fun and steamy story.
Unexpected Kisses - A cute little Christmas story. I liked this one the best. I liked the main characters and the lodge, but major insta-love. I gave this one ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hidden Kisses - Basically the same insta-love story with different characters and the addition of a child. The parent aspect got me and the romance was sweet, but this one I only gave ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Mistaken Kisses - Again, same insta-love story with the best friends of characters from the previous two. It was okay. But after reading the first two, it was kind of boring. ⭐️⭐️
This "box set" is marked as The Steamy Versions. Apparently these were clean romances that the author decided to add sex scenes to. Literally... you can see where she took a scene with a passionate kiss and just turned it into a sex scene. I didn't notice it as much in the first one, but the second two it felt completely out of sorts with the story. In fact, the author didn't bother updating the rest of the story with the sex parts. The moments were referred to as "when we kissed." I don't think the sex scenes added anything. Probably should have just left them as a clean romance.

I've never really liked short stories in the past, I prefer a good long build up with a proper ending but this book was brilliant. Even though there were 3 separate books each one was as long as some books. Then they all merged into each other with the same characters in each one so you get to see what happens in the end. I love the way they are written and each one is completely different. You want to shake the characters at times but that adds to the enjoyment. It isn't all about sex and more about the story, they are all beautiful romances and great love stories. I bought the next box set as soon as I finished this one. It's not at all graphic with the sex scene details which is a refreshing change. I like the way they are an easy read which you can put down and pick up easily (not that I did!) I read the first a few weeks before the last 2 but read them in a day because I couldn't put them down once I started them. I'd recommend them to anyone that likes a good love story or short story, as I said they aren't that short and do follow on with each character being in every story which is nice. I can't wait to read the next box set.
