A cute early reader series that plays into the graphic-novels for children genre introduces Eva, a bright, vivacious young owl that recounts her life in her journal with sparse writing and lots of pictures. Each book can be read as a stand-alone and the series does not have to be read in order - to the point that the first chapter in each book included in this collection is exactly the same in form and character introduction. It would be excellent for kids who may not enjoy long-form reading, or pre-readers who don't always have the attention span for chapter books. The graphics are cute and fun, adding extra interest to the stories. The stories themselves are simple and written in a problem>investigation>solution>ending format, but are quickly paced so the predictability isn't really an issue. The plots will resonate better with kids who attend school at some level as many of the plots involve classmates, school work and other "school kid" experiences.
Three stars is probably underselling the series, but four seems a little too generous given how formulaic the writing is.
This was SUCH a lovely book (or collection of books, that is!). So I'm an English teacher, and one of my students brought in Owl Diaries. I am not ashamed to say that I got pulled in, so I went and bought this collection to read more!! This is not only a FANTASTIC children's chapter book, but it is EXTREMELY cozy and comforting to read as an adult. I love the characters, and the lessons that Eva learns throughout are portrayed in a lovely way. I'm excited to read more of these. Something to bond over with my young students, haha! :)
