After years of slavery, subjected to torments of body and spirit by the inhuman Kin, Travis Sterling can barely recall his old life. Memories of Earth, and of disappointing his family barely seem real anymore.

But even without the occasional voice in his head, Trav knows he’s different. A vast amount of rune crafting knowledge has mysteriously taken up residence in his mind; too bad he doesn’t have any mystical power. If he could find a way to actually use any rune magic, his situation could change.

The stubborn, unbroken man burns for justice, but despite his strange abilities, he stands no chance against the Kin. In the near future, when Trav comes face to face with complete destruction, his mettle and creativity will be tested. Will he perish, or will he grasp a chance to shake the foundations of his new world?

A VeilVerse Story

*Note: This series was written for adults. Asgard Awakening contains morally grey situations, polyamory, fantasy violence, and slavery. Please do not attempt dangerous rune magic at home.

Blaise Corvin

Blaise Corvin served in the US Army in several roles. He has seen the best and the worst that humanity has to offer. He is a sucker for any hobby involving weapons, art, or improv.

He currently lives in Texas, in a house full of enough geeky memorabilia to start a museum.

He likes talking about himself in 3rd person and posting pictures of himself holding tarantulas. Sometimes, he pretends he is not an idiot with a terrible sense of humor.

It's all very eccentric.

Blaise currently writes mostly in the GameLit genre and LitRPG subgenre, exciting new classifications of fiction where characters either play a game (usually VR), or live in a world with game-like elements.

Delvers LLC is GameLit, lightly LitRPG, mostly a Fantasy/SciFi Adventure. Secret of the Old Ones is hard LitRPG, complete with XP and leveling...plus has Lovecraftian and steampunk elements (because why not?).

Same old Blaise, no character consistency or development. The main character is supposed to this strong awesome dude but comes across as a whiny bitch. The start of the book is so repetitive; HATE, RAGE, FUCK THAT, RAWR, YELLING YELLING, but my wife is dead and I had to kill a guy BOOHOO Boohoo.

Also, all this action is supposed to be happening but there is way to much dialogue and the scenes just fall apart, the mood is all actiony then a bucket of cold water hits you in the face. You keep thinking it will end but it just keeps rambling ON AND ON.

Mini-Review:

Mix of Audio & eBook

I normally like the narrator but it didn't work for me this time around. The way she narrated the book made it very dry and emotionless. Good intro, uneven pacing in the middle and a bit of a see-saw on story direction. Core idea of reborn gods is great. Execution? It's not as clean or layered as what I would expect to read.

The story needed to be longer and more detailed. I don't care about Travis having a harem of females but the way it happens is rather flimsy. There is not a good sense of who Travis was before the change and only a vague idea of what he is now that he has been chosen. I will check out the next book of this series when it comes out and hope that it will add to the story & characters enough to make it fun.

Not Gamelit and Writing is poor to meh.

This book has a cool premise but the Authors writing style just ruins it for me. He interrupts the flow of the story to give detail that takes forever to get through, it feels, that isn't that important or is just imparted at a horrible time. And it happens over and over again. He has the MC make weird decisions, like the MC has night vision but spends most of his beginning decisions with new magic to make his environment bright even while during a fight or when in the first fight with Kin, the bad guy gives the "kill em all" line and the MC is rushed, but then they have a dissing contest between both groups that if said aloud would take like 2-4 minutes, like wth, weren't y'all about to fight. I don't see how this book has such a good rating at all. Id say they're fake but I know this author is popular somehow. Ive read other books by this author and hated them too so i guess I'll just have to stay away from him. The other book written in this series is WAY better and wish he was writing this one as well. 3/10 since I had to stop reading for sanity sake at about 60%.

Starts well, but it drags out to a non resolution
This is Blase Corvin's take on a LitRPG harem novel (NC-17, Not X) and it starts well enough. He's got the formula down, but this book never gels, and never reaches the quality of Delvers LLC.

Problem #1 is the Main Character. A lot of Writers try to show the MC is a tough guy buy making him and asshole. This trick rarely ever works. Maybe Blaise wanted to take a break from likeable characters like Henry and Jason. Yeah we get that the MC is one pissed off guy, he's been a slave in the mines for a few years, + personal tragedy. Despite how justified Travis is at foaming at the mouth, it gets old at the half way point and doesn't stop for the rest of the book .
There is also the Blase Corvin standard of having the MC dither indecisively for exactly long enough to be exactly that many minutes late to stop the bad thing from happening, and still save the day. Why not have the MC rush into action and arrive at that point in time? And this is the 6th book I read of his where he misuses the word "decimate", I think it must be an inside joke.
Lastly the verbal exchanges are way too lengthy for the situation and it trows of the timing of the book. Imagine 2 people jump off a 2 story roof, and have a 5 - 10 conversation on the way down. Or imagine that all the cowboys are reaching for their guns and they all have time to exchange long drawn out insults. are they talking really fast? or moving in slow motion?

That's it for the criticism, except for the not an ending. There was a lot to like in this book, I do like that Travis at least questions his vitriolic racism from time to time, at least when the subject of his racism has tits and is in his bed.
I've heard the comparisons to Fimbulwinter, and wile I could see what they were talking about in the very first chapter I've got to say this is separate and distinct story with many of the same elements.
All in all this is an interesting side project, and I'm happy to read more between Delvers and Nora Hazard, who's really grown on me.

This was a complementary story with the series called "Cultivating Chaos" that I really liked! But weirdly this one was harder to get into, but when we were past the escape from slavery everything flowed smoothly. The reason this book isn't 5 stars is that it is too short...

Not as awesome as cultivating chaos, but still good

The world both authors created is infact astonishing. Veil verse is so cool.
Cultivating chaos in so good. This book doesn't reach the awesomeness of it but still it is good on it's own content. It's actually felt short as there are so many things not yet done, but I would be definitely reading the next one!

I promised myself that I wouldn't read anything else by this author after the hot mess he made in his Delver's LLC books. BUT, this "VeilVerse" is supposed to be in conjunction with William D Arand's Cultivating Chaos. I enjoyed that book, so against my better judgement I will give this book a go.

The few times that I read Blaise's work (3 books) I always felt a William D Arand Vibe from him. That hasn't changed. The characters are behaving like some from William's work, and the ever present "angry protagonist" is also presented. He is angry at everything, and uses that anger to fuel his determination. Now I see he is starting a harem....

So far I can over look these faults (as I see them), and enjoy the story. The author hasn't started his soap box pandering as yet (it took till the second book for that to happen last time). So I'm willing to continue with the series for now.

I see he has also learnt by not having 10 POV characters in one book. I just hope he doesn't do no "so angry I can beat a demigod" anime bull again.

Well this book ended abruptly. I expected more before the end. It wasn't too bad, so I will give the following books in the series a try.

Bad to Very Bad

The underlying story is good.
Everything else is bad.
The wasted pages of self justification are bad. The virtue signaling of murder and hate is bad. The main character is an unlikable jerk, and that's bad.
This book also made me think the author needs a skilled mental health professional. I don't want to worry about that.

Good to read LitRPG if you do not mind Harem.
The only thing bothering me in this universe is that magic is not clearly defined.

Asgard!

I'm a big fan of Blaise Corvin's books and this book largely didn't disappoint me. It has a great premise, a very likeable protagonist and it kept me turning page after page long after I should have gone to sleep or done something else.

I only have 2 gripes about the book that I hope gets corrected/toned down.

1. Not a big deal, but this is a pretty quick read and I was left wishing the book was about a 1/3 longer than it was. It's not quite a novella but not quite a novel and I'd really love it if I could get more than a day of reading out of it.

2. The biggest gripe that I have in almost all LitRPG/gamelit books is the juvenile sex fantasies that get acted out. Blaise hasn't really hit this area in his other series but for some reason thought it would be awesome to do so here. I understand the target audience is often gamer nerds with awkward social skills, limited sexual experience, and or furry fetishes but I honestly feel the story would be better if sex played a much smaller role in future books of this series. I can deal with it but it's a little overdone and immature and doesn't reflect well on Blaide's natural talent as a writer.

Despite this I highly recommend the book and will definitely buy the sister series as soon as this review is submitted. If the next book gets a little longer and matures a bit it'll probably get 5 stars from me.

Interesting book. I think the author should spend a bit more time on getting regular companions for our main character, instead of having 100 percent beautiful females, but otherwise, the story is good, the world is interesting, and the slog is real. Knowing how powerful you can be, while having to work up to that point is a very real theme in LitRPG, and one I usually like very much. In this case, because the stakes are high, it's even more interesting to see how our main character handles things. I like this one, because there is no super overpowered character dealing out damage, and walking over everything regardless of it's power level. There's real progression, working up to what he knows he's capable of doing, and before he even gets started, he's hit with a deadline, and it will be very interesting to see how that affects things in the next installment in the series.
Just for reference, there is another series associated with this one, that is told from a different perspective. If you liked this one, you'll want to go track down Cultivating Chaos by William D. Arand, for the story told from another character's point of view, it's all very interesting, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how these two authors work out the future volumes in this combined series.

What an adventure with promise of more in the future

This was a wild ride. It is definitely gamelit. I enjoyed this story and journey very much. I read gamelit and litrpg like they are going out of style. So it was a pleasure to get a gamelit that had no state tables but the feeling of progression of a character was still there just apart of the story. The idea of a god passing his mantel on and taking the old ideas and combining the new to create something different and hopefully more powerful.

I did feel lost at the beginning of the story but I think the mc was lost as well and together the mc and reader rediscovered things together. He had a bumpy ride to start but he makes mostly well thought out decisions. This idea of all the “veils” and different god pantheons starting a new is phenomenal. It was a fun quick read that kept me interested and now Impatiently waiting for more.

I like Blaise Corbin’s writing and storytelling. But I must say it did feel different from his other books which is nice. He has the ability to tell a story from the characters point of view and then give you a completely different character in a different book and I appreciate that. Now I just need to read about ash....

I'm really not sure how I feel about this book. The author bills it as being RPG GameLit and while I can see how that could be the case, it feels rather tenuous as if your viewing the narrative through the lens of GameLit rather than the narrative actually being formed as GameLit.

I nearly abandoned the book several times and while I am glad that I finished it, with the hardest part being the middle third of the book feeling like a slight slog, I really only persevered due to Cultivating Chaos being next in my to-read list and having just finished Take Two the previous night.

I think one of the main reasons that this book didn't really engage for me is that I just really didn't like the protagonist, Trav. He just felt rather two-dimensional and dull to me, though I do have an affection for sassy, sarcastic, wise-ass protagonists which might be why Trav grated on me somewhat.

I know a lot of people dont know about this genre. And generally tend to search for books by writing best fantasy or erotic or romance novels on google and get a list and start reading them but honestly..... I really like this genre.... My first book of this genre is fimbulwinter by daniel black and i am lucky that i liked that book which made me more curious about this genre and now i am literally gobbling up this genre ... though to be true to get a good story with a proper plot is sometimes hard in this genre some of them are just sex from first page to last without a plot... i know some people like them but i just need some plot to really enjoy a book because i generally read A KINGDOM OF FLESH AND FIRE, TO KILL A KINGDOM this type of books which have really good plots...... And i am pleasantly surprised and can say that WILLIAM D ARAND OR RANDI DARREN , BLAISE CORVAIN are rally good plot maker... and i really like the new universe that they have created together i am really looking forward to enjoy the book of this universe ... BLAISE I am really starting to get stir crazy waiting for ASGARD AWAKENING 3 please give me that book fast please..... i cant wait anymore pleasssse

Amazing

Another phenomenal novel from a solid author!
This book was light on character development, but action and plot driven suspense was more than enough to keep me in the "just one more chapter" zone!
This fantasy novel utilizes Norse mythology overtones without trying to strictly adhere to the established mythos.
This is clearly intended as the start to a sprawling, expansive new series. I can't wait to see how both this and the companion series by William D Arand continue to evolve and merge their stories.
(I read this one after Cultivating Chaos, and while I enjoyed both I liked this one a bit more. It was easier for me to find my reading "groove" as it were).
I will definitely be picking up the next entry in this series!

Interesting story in spite of harem aspects

This is an interesting book. After a bit it is a harem style, but not revolting so. There is a start of reverse rape so be warned.

I'm docking 1 star for the harem, but still the story is still interesting.

This is about a man taken from, presumably, our world. A man 3 years into one of the most violent cultures loosely based on Norse mythology and adding Kin whom are some kind animal evolved creatures with extreme strength, reflexes, speed, and oh yeah magic.

Humans are very 2nd class slaves in this world.
Trav, our main character, gets magic on top of his odd abilities.

After follows him on his quest for revenge and anger.

Other than the harem aspects, I enjoyed this incredibly dark world.

Another fine addition

So having read the first in the series - Cultivating Chaos - I was looking forward to this one. It doesn’t disappoint either. I do like the vikings so preferred this to the martial arts based first one, however only in that I understood it better and therefore found it easier to follow.

These aren’t simple books and you need to read them properly to get all the details otherwise the lore and magic can become confusing.

I like the MC as like the first book he isn’t a goodie two shoes and has a dark side; leaving it open for some nasty stuff if required. I’ll definitely be reading the next in the series and hope it’s a long and glorious one...

Great story! Wonderful idea

This great story shares a universe with Cultivating Chaos, which are both in the Veilverse. This story stands fully on its’ own, but cultivating chaos is a sibling story by William D Arand.

Asgard Awakening is an interesting take on the GameLit Genre, in that we have a character who bonds with a powerful magical force and gains incredible abilities.

He meets other individuals and by interacting with them changes both sides are better for it. This is a greatly entertaining portrayal of an interesting magic system.

Kinda confusing at times

The author really takes off running with this book. The first couple of chapters kind of feel jumpy he goes so fast without really giving a lot of backstory till later in the book. Some people might like that I personally want a fan. Does have an interesting concept so I'll go ahead and read book 2 and the other book in this universe just to try it out. Another thing is there are some gaps about why things happen, ie: what happened after people got into arguments, that made it a bit of a read and re-read to understand what happens sort of book

excellent story about portal fantasy
good quality
entertaining
Attaining godhood thru the enslavement of monster girls.
really ? it had to be slave vs master ? it could have been a partership...a cooperative.
I must be the only litrpg fan who doesn't approve of slavery...very sad.
sparse progression...just like delvers llc...a few self-improvement per novel...not constant progression like vrmmorpg novels.
Veilverse is a great multiverse...I also loved cultivating chaos by william d. arand.
good work guys.

Oh wow!

There is so much in this book that it’s impossible to cover it all! Trav’s time in the mines, his escape and slow awakening. All that I can say is that you HAVE to read this book! You may not be a fan of Role Playing Games, I’m not myself, but this book doesn’t drown you in tables of options for upgrades etc. obviously, it approaches sf&f from a different angle with power being measured in bars. A bit strange but the story carries the day. I’m getting ready to download the next in line. Then I’ll have to wait again probably! Oh well!

I enjoyed almost everything about this book. An interesting protagonist with a magic system that shows complexity and promise. The mythological framework makes us anticipate the future, rather than marvel at the author's cleverness... which is rare.

There's no clear ending though. This is obviously the start of a series, but I was hoping for something a little more concrete to round out the novel. Corvin has built up a lot of credits in my loyalty bank though, so I'll definitely continue with this series.

Okay... So where is the next one?

Okay so I have to start by saying not only do I love this book, but I love the concept of this universe. Blaise did an amazing job putting together a fast paced punchy storyline with the type of character that I love to read. The story isn't too heavy on the stat trees and doesn't get bogged down in ability lists and skill functions, but still leaves enough mystery and hype that you have the 'Oh Shit?!' Moment when the grand powers show up. I can't wait to see what these books bring to the table.

It’s ok

Idk why this book is so highly reviewed. several sentences are improperly written, the author is shallow in expanding the main characters view of the kin to the point where it’s still not clear, the plot self admittedly has no focus. All We know is his dick of a relative is alive somewhere who we barely know and the main character, from what I remember, doesn’t have a great relationship with. Also this isn’t a litfic yet he says “bars of power” when talking about how much power he has... what? He has a meter? Book is 3/5.

Dark but good

Was not quite expecting the book to be as dark as it was. The Writer's style was what kept me reading while I normally would have put the book down. The first chapter's of the book set up a very bleak outlook and an immediate hatred for the dominant race in this realm. Unfortunately the "kin" companions that the MC makes along the way do not do a good job of changing that early impression in my opinion. I am hoping that the next book works on this and shows a better side to them that's deeper than mere physical attractiveness.

Rated R indeed

This book comes at you with a vengeance, rides you hard and leaves you wet. An incredible story about a man finding his life beyond revenge with new found power and old grudges. The veilverse is an exciting place to be. Blaise Corbin always writes good stories and I didn't think it could get better than Delvers LLC but I was very wrong. Ashamed Awakening is a gritty adventure that you can't help but read in one sitting. 5/5 valkyries.

Really enjoyed this story.

I first read the other book in this series Cultivating Chaos, I am a fan of William D Arand, and enjoyed it. But I have to admit I found the MC in this book a more interesting and easier for me to relate to. This has to do with the theme of this veil being Viking related and the other being eastern martial philosophy. I am really looking forward to next book in this series!

Great story which adds to Cultivating Chaos

Really enjoyed this book, and glad I started with Cultivating Chaos as I understood more of the “world” which this story takes place. The story can be read separately, but this one feels more like it builds on the other book rather than the other way around. Only thing I didn’t like was that the story felt too short. Sex scenes are mostly fade to black and not as heavily detailed compared to other books in this genre.

Hardcore, dark and intriguing

Protagonist is travelling with family through Bermuda Triangle and gets sucked into a world where he becomes a slave. Whilst working in the mines he develops rune magic that starts him on an unexpected adventure-filled journey. My brief summary does not do this book justice. Read the whole book in under three hours. Cannot wait until the next instalment. Pick up a copy and dive in...
