Accidental space adventurer Cal Carver has had a rough few months. He's fought spider-dragons, battled space clowns, and been repeatedly tortured by the galaxy's oldest assassin.
And don't even get him started on the squirrel-tits.
Now all that's behind him, Cal just wants to kick back and relax. The universe, however, has other ideas.
He and his crew find themselves in possession of the Symmorium Sentience, a once god-like entity now stripped of its power. The Sentience needs help to return home and restore the Symmorium species, which recently found itself the subject of an unfortunate genocide.
But with dark forces seeking to turn the Sentience's power into a planet-pulverizing weapon, the team's trek across the galaxy becomes a desperate race against time, with the fate of the very cosmos at stake.
Featuring awkward space-dates, gene-splicing villains, and a packet of coconut fingers as old as time itself, Space Team: Sentienced to Death is the eleventh book in the bestselling Space Team series by multi-award-winning author Barry J. Hutchison, and perfects for fans of funny stuff happening in space.
Barry J. Hutchison is an award-winning author, screenwriter and writer of comics. Having written over 70 books for children and teenagers, Barry is now writing books for adults. Space Team is his first grown-up novel.
Barry lives in the Highlands of Scotland with his wife, two children, and irritatingly upbeat dog.
At this point, this series has secured a very stable place in my heart, and I am way past all sense of objectivity and I can admit to pure subjective fan-girling. I have missed being with Cal and the gang, I have grown found of their calamitous Space adventures, and even more so, with their unlikely deep friendships, but add to that an orphaned, last of her species, 6years old shark-girl, who brings out all the protective instincts of our resident werewolf girl Miz, and this book brings on not only the typical for the series humor, but also all the feelings that tug on your heartstrings! I love this series and this book did not disappoint! 🤓❤️🧡💛!
“The galaxy is waiting, so, why are you?” This has been another fun read, full of adventures and misadventures of Cal and the Space Team! Many surprises, emotional and on a personal level, besides the turn of events and impossible situations the team manages to come out triumph and alive. LOL. I really had a great time!
Woot! It's good to remember why a book is a fav. =) Features all of the core gang, lots of hijinks happen and a fair share of warm fuzzies mixed in with laughter.
10/04/2019 Note:
Hilarious & good little plot within the large plot arc. =)
I love these books. Cal Carver is a wonderfully written character, someone with whom the reader can bond instantly and someone the reader will actually care about. A deeply-flawed hero but a hero nonetheless.
As always the storyline is cohesive and makes sense within context (though as with all the Space Team books, that context is often completely insane 😁) and like all the best escapism you're just dragged along on a fun ride.
The only bad bit about the book is that it came to an end eventually and now I have to wait for the next one.
Superb and required reading if you love 'silly' books.
I was halfway through writing a "serious" review and then I asked myself, is this what Cal Carver would have wanted? No. No, it isn't. And when a fictional character has that kind of hold over you, you know the author has done something right. Space Team is probably the best comic sci-fi series around, and I pity the sad and comfortless lives of those that haven't discovered them yet. Get out there, you poor fonks, and grab yourself some Cal, and put some cheerful nonsense in your lives! Nevertheless, since I put a bit of Mech-effort into writing it, here follows the serious shizz:
Cal Carver is irritating, puerile, irresponsible and so flippant in the face of immediate personal (or galactic) destruction that I would probably strangle him within 5 minutes of meeting him. But this is what makes Space Team the best darned comic sci-fi out there (and I'm including The Hitchhiker's guide), as we come for the space high jinks and stay for the crew interaction.
Every installment sees the crew facing horrendous monsters, evil super villains, physical torture (usually Cal) and insurmountable odds, and yet they spend the majority of their time bickering and provoking each other. The uninitiated might think this would become boring, but in fact it gets more amusing as the series goes on; like family members, the characters disguise their affection for each other with gibes at their individual foibles.
Space team are incompetent in the best possible way, and the adventures ridiculous in so many ways, but it's Cal's irrelevant pop-culture references (especially to the Golden girls and Tobey Maguire) that bring the books to an almost existential level: if you were the only Earth human left in the galaxy, what cultural idiosyncrasies would you bring to uncaring aliens?! The Space Team series has the whole package, great characters and interaction, (usually) fun adventures, and dialogue that will have you snorting in public; Barry Hutchison deserves some sort of space award for giving us this crew, and I will certainly buy him a banoffee pie should I ever meet him :)
kindle unlimited, was okay and so was going to give it that rating but amazon always says that 3 'okay' is BAD/negative review so although did give 3 to #10 this one was just, well dunno but will go with 4 instead.

I love the Space Team series. It’s one of my favorites. They’re funny, adventurous, and sometimes filled with heart. After reading the epilogue, I now understand this book more. Under the covers, this one is all heart.
The first half of this entry is more frantic and goofy than any other part of the series. It’s almost manic in the wacky behavior and crazy random statements. Not to ruin anything, but Mr. Hutchison shares with us, his fans, that this book is written in the wake of a highly personal loss. This novel is therapy. I think long-time readers will detect an odd shift in the narrative.
That being said, the second half of the book leans more towards classic Space Team. The pace picks up and the situations become more interesting. The finale also shines.
I would say that, if you are this far into the series, read it, ya loon! It’s my least favorite, but it’s still fonking Space Team.
“Shizz” is now fully embedded in my vocabulary. No apologies.
Space Team continues to be one of the most ridiculous and joyful things I’ve read, and I genuinely feel bad for anyone who hasn’t stumbled into this chaotic mess of a universe. Go fix that. Add some intergalactic nonsense to your life.
Now, every time I sit down to write a serious review for this series, I stop myself and think - would Cal Carver even care? Probably not. And honestly, that's kind of the point. When a fictional character has taken up that much space in your brain, it’s because the author has nailed it.
Space Team continues to be one of the most ridiculous and joyful things I’ve read, and I genuinely feel bad for anyone who hasn’t stumbled into this chaotic mess of a universe. Go fix that. Add some intergalactic nonsense to your life.
I now have to go back and re-read all the Space Team books.
Do you know how many books that is? This is no small commitment, and sure I'll enjoy it (possibly more than the first time) but seriously, that's a huge commitment. I think I deserve a Space Team badge or something. Maybe I need to get a life? Naw!
This book: Sentienced to Death has answered a lot of questions, brought together some story lines - and ended a few. We meet Tyrra (sp?) again, under really sad circumstances, but our hearty Space Team take her for the ride of her life. Bonds are formed, as Miz would say, "ewwww", but enough shizznods get liquidated to balance it out.
Really enjoying the series and this book was no exception, Kevin kills me everytime and plenty of times in this book alone I've wore my tea, I've got one strange moment I just can't shake and it's when mech is raising the currently untitled so Loren can put the landing legs down, and we all know when mech turns his dial to the strength he's gets stronger and just wants to kill Cal, and he's turned the dial on many occasions, but this time was really weird, the way he was talking and thinking about the crew/team, saying the blue girl this the blue girl that was the worst part, I've never heard Mech talk like this with is dial turned it freaked me out badly I wanted to skip the chapter, maybe I'm missing something.I Hope it don't happen again though 🙂😂

I know this is damning with faint praise but this series is a great light read. Was a heavy time that took a while or a dark sorry or as I have been recently management books to help find a new role then this series helps refresh you.
This story in particular is well paced, with humour and ties off a few open plot elements and again moves forward on the character development that had slowed a bit in the last few books.
A great read which I have devoured and now find myself bereft, as usual, as there isn’t another to dive straight into.
I had zero expectations going into this book series. It was free through kindle unlimited so I thought I would give it a try. Here I am, 11 books later and ready for more. The whole space time series has been light and entertaining throughout. Each one was good and left me wanting to read more. I will definitely keep up with new books in this series and check out the author’s other works.
This is the only series I’ve read that consistently makes me laugh out loud multiple times throughout. This newest addition to the line is no different. It’s one of those books that can cheer you up no matter what and still have tons of action. I honestly have to say that this is one of my all time favorite series.
Space team is back in all its normal glory. Unlike the last book in the series which seemed off and a bit repetitive (to me), this one settle back in...smooth and sweet. It brought us into the space team world we know and love. Cal was Cal. Ridiculous, impulsive, human, and did I mention ridiculous? I enjoyed the entire plot.
Cal is still reeling from the knowledge that he is responsible for the state of the universe, following the team's time traveling exploits. He now has the chance to fix at least one part, Space Team to the rescue again!! This book continues the high standards set before, the team dynamic just fits so well, roll on numerous 12!!!
I never read comedic science-fiction. At least, I never did until I encountered this series. I love these guys. The characters are awesome (especially Mech), the adventures are hysterical, and the best part is the dumbfounded reaction of all the bad guys as Cal Carver steamrolls right over them despite his patent idiocy. Keep writing, Barry! So not lame.
That last book hit me with a tinge of "bleh, more of the same, but in a bad way", this book bounced back with "more of the same, but in a good way".
Kevin's pranks are the best.
Excellent narration.
I don’t know what book it started on, but they started including the narrator’s outtakes at the end of the Space Team books. They're pretty amusing too.
First up: I loved the title. It's why I started reading the book. Then I couldn't stop reading the book. It made me lol and lol-ing on public transport can be a little embarrassing. But nevertheless I persisted. I'm going back to book one to start reading the series from the beginning.
When I want to laugh and have fun, I listen to this series of books. If you have read any of my other reviews, it isn't hard to figure out that I am a fan. (And to think how much Cal Carver irritated me at the beginning of the first book!)
I will be so very sad if and/or when there isn't any more Space Team.
What can one say. Another fabulous space book in this awesome space series. Cal and the Currently Untitled's crew take down another space villan. Or do they? You'll have to read to find out this space adventure works out out. And, as always, that's a Cal Carver guarantee...
Cal and team have done it again, blasting across space trying to save the day after Cal has fonked it up again. It was out of this world ridiculous fun. Always read to the very last page.
2 minutes wow, not asking a lot. So loved the book made me laugh at the absurd situation our hero gets into and out of. Made me sentimental thinking about the meaning of friendship. Made me smile at the smart turn it phrases.
Another wonderful Space Team adventure. I found myself giggling after reading the first couple of pages. I am in love with this series. I look forward to the next book in the series.
This might be the best Space Team story yet. Cal and the team continue to try and clean up the mess they caused when they sent King of Space back in time where he (who saw this coming) changed the timeline so much that the galaxy the team knew is now completely different.
Quite possibly the best one yet and certainly the most moving. The author has a gift for portraying deeply moving sentiments in a funny and ridiculous manner, that leaves you with a smile on your face that gets bigger with every page.
This was another great Space Team story! Barry they just keep getting better and better. I loved the little girl Tyrra. And we see a soft side to Miz. Keep up the great work and we will keep reading!
The laughs of the previous books just keep coming. The first two chapters had me laughing like a lion, not for the first time. Barry, you sir are a shizznod of the highest order!
Another brilliant chapter in the Space Team sage. Very funny, with moments of deep reflection and lots of action. Heseltine and Manacled are excellent villains, and the romance between Cal and Loren is sweet. Thank you for another great book!
Gave up 30% in, same old story, nothing new, surprised red dwarf or guardians haven't had anything to say about these books. Started this series with 5 stars, very dissatisfied that the author thinks his readers will fall for this rubbish
