Königlicher Dienst

Rate this book

Royal Service is book one in the Royals of Danovar series by Leslie North. This is a sweet modern day retelling of the Cinderella fairy tale.

King Phillip Gregory Humbert Alcott is the King of Danovar. Phillip is almost thirty years old. It is the law that in order to hold the position of King, you must marry by your thirtieth birthday. Phillip is completely dedicated to serving his people and if that means choosing a wife by her ability to be a good Queen, that it would be a marriage of servitude only, not one borne of love, then that is what he will do. Phillip’s mother has invited all of the eligible women of their country to Summer House so that Phillip can get to know them and choose a bride. Only on the first day when the women are arriving, he sees her. He sees a woman who he thinks is a maid, but who awakens something in him he had given up on. But he owes it to his country to choose a proper Queen. Can he just seek out this woman for a fling? He has to find out who she is.

Ella Fernstone was born in Danovar but grew up in the States after her father died. She lives with her step mother and two step sisters. Ella is a giver, it just comes naturally to her. She is tired, though, of constantly giving to her family. She wants her freedom. She has promised her step mother that she will help to get one of her sisters married off to the King. Then she can start her own life. Her dream is to ride show horses and to teach others to ride. Horseback riding is her passion. The problem is that neither of her sisters is particularly interested in marrying the King. The first time she saw him, she thought he was a mechanic. He was covered in grease and in dirty, work worn clothes. But she felt something. He was a beautiful man, even with the grease on his face. She was so tempted by him. But she has to keep her eyes on the prize, getting one of her sisters married to the King.

Cinderella

Eventually Phillip discovers that in deed, Ella is not a maid but is an eligible possibility to be his Queen. But she has her mind made up. She is leaving. So Phillip is determined to spend as much time with her as he can. Maybe he can convince her to stay, to give him a chance. But if she still wants to leave, at least they’ll have this time together.

“Ella was trying to get out of a life of servitude, not add an entire country’s population to her list of people to wait on.”

queen and king crowns

Ella is falling fast for Phillip as he is for her. She has to decide what she really wants, What is most important to her.

“She fulfilled him, brought out the color and adventure in a life that had always been duty after obligation after responsibility. With her at his side, all of that would be so much more meaningful, a joy instead of a burden.”

This was such a cute story, and pretty steamy as well. This Cinderella has a bit of a dirty side! I loved how the relationship developed with these two, through letter writing. With all of today’s technology, I thought it was so romantic. Phillip had given up on marrying for love and Ella wanted her freedom. It is Ella that has to decide here if she can sacrifice that freedom for a love that is just beginning to grow. If she is cut out to lead a life of service to the country she was born to. Or, will she walk away to the life she had planned? I did enjoy this. It sweet and hot and even had a bit of a villain. I do look forward to more from this series. The next book is Phillip’s younger brother, Eric’s turn in Royal Treatment.

CINDERELLA love story! Fun to read the connections between the fairy tale and North's Royal Service. Light hearted romantic telling of King Phillip and his hunt for a wife. At his first sight of maid Ella; Phillip was drawn to her. Ella has dreams of training horses and the freedom to go back to America. Sweet meetings lead the couple to admit their true feelings. HEA!! When he sees two women arrive with a Perky blonde PA, he is drawn to her at once. He jumps on his motorcycle and heads her way....
Actually he is drawn to Ella💃💋, and the two women she is carrying the bags for are her step sisters. Ella💃💋 has the idea of if she can get one of her sisters married👰 to Phillip, she can leave and go back to The states and start her own horse🐎 training business.
When she sees a trainer lunging one of Philip's Arabian stallions🐎, she is mesmerized. Phillip🐺🍆🌋 is mesmerized by Ella💃💋 and he breaks protocol and wants to ride off with her on his motorcycle, away from his own party! Ella💃💋 would love to cruise away with him too, but she's got to get one of her sisters married👰 to the 👑King. She has no idea she's flirting with him!

I received a free advanced copy of this book and voluntarily gave a review.

Royal Service appears to be a modern twist on the classic Cinderella story. King Philip has to get married by the time he turns 30. To solve this issue, his mother invites all the eligible women to an estate, similar to The Bachelor. Philip ends up meeting Ella at the estate, and the rest is history (for the sake of avoiding spoilers - you will have to read the book to find out about this history).

The description of the book compares it to The Bachelor, but I believe it is more along the lines of The Selection by Kiera Cass regarding royalty, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of competition for Philip's attention. He only has eyes for Ella. So maybe it is a mix of both of The Bachelor and The Selection.

I enjoyed this book. I believe it was the perfect book to read right around the Royal Wedding. It was fun and fast-paced. There were some moments when I face-palmed, but I never really cried (which is good, because I don't think I would want to cry with this book). I enjoyed the character development, as face paced as it was, as Philip and Ella realize that life isn't necessarily all about the policy and being loyal to the throne. The big lesson to take away from this book is that to be your best self; you have to be happy with your life. You are useless if you are miserable.

I look forward to reading the next book in this series once it is released.

Royal Service is a sweet, sexy retelling of Cinderella.

King Phillip needs to find a wife but he's not thrilled about having to pick from a crop of "eligible" ladies. Especially when he spies a maid that he wants. Ella's not really a maid, though. What she is is a sweet young woman who is always on hand to help out her stepsisters, both of whom her stepmother is intent on presenting to King Phillip for marriage.

As the two of them fall into a clandestine affair, their hearts are starting to become involved, but Ella is planning on heading back to the US once the King picks a wife. Can Phillip convince her to stay, and to marry him instead?

If you like royal romances and/or modern fairytales, put Royal Service on your TBR list today.

A dashing hero, a feisty heroine and a reality show are a few of the highlights from the modern day twist to a Cinderella story. With the recent surge of royal fever Phillip and Ella couldn't have come at a better time. North brings the sexy and heart with a sprinkle of humor to modern romance. Ella dreams with her heart and it's those fantasies that have saved her from the heartbreak that is her life. Phillip is a realist that has forgotten how to dream. Funny that it takes a Bachelor type setting and a determined mother to remind him how. Royal Service is an enchanting reminder that despite the odds, it's the dreaming that give us the hope and will to survive.

Blurb:
King Phillip is a real life Prince Charming. Golden haired with a Danovian accent, and a solid gold crown sitting on his head, he’s every girl’s daydream. He’s a good man and an even better king, but the one thing he’s been terrible at is choosing a royal wife -- fearing a marriage that’s more about policy than passion. But when his mother invites all the eligible maidens to The Summer House Party, Phillip is trapped in a real-life Bachelor where he won’t have the option of quietly splitting from the girl after the party is over -- he’ll be wed to her for life.

Ella Fernstone is tired of being the family servant. After her father died, Ella was receded to the basement as her stepmother began a full court press to cultivate her own daughters. Ella’s ready to escape the hot mess of a home that she grew up in by finally pursuing her dream of competitive riding: something she’s been preparing her whole life to do. All she has to do is marry one of her step sisters off to the King of Danovar to finally find her freedom. It couldn’t be that hard right?

That was until Ella was the first to fall for the King’s dashing good looks and an offer to ride off with him into the sunset. Ella is hesitant -- a Queen’s life was still one of servitude, but it’s hard to ignore the pull of a handwritten love letter and a skillfully delivered kiss. Phillip too is caught up in seducing what he never expected to find: an eligible woman he might just learn to love. But when the reality of a royal marriage comes crashing down, Phillip and Ella must decide if they can risk their hearts, or their freedoms, on the chance of true love.

In This story Leslie has taken the old tale of Cinderella and brought it up to date. King Phillip is looking for a bride, well actually his mother is looking for a bride for her son. All of the eligible young ladies are brought to their Summer House Party so Phillip can scope out the women and make a choice of a woman to marry. King Phillip would rather marry for love, not duty but goes along with this plan. Ella Fernstone is there posing as an assistant to her step sisters with one plan in mind, get one of her step sisters married to the king so she can go back to the US and do what she loves, work with horses.
When Ella and Phillip meet, there is chemistry but Ella is determined to keep her plan on track but wouldn't mind spending time with the hot royal mechanic. At the first ball, she quickly finds out that the hot royal mechanic is none other than King Phillip. She offers to help Phillip choose a bride through her spreadsheets, slanting the data towards one of her step sisters, but there is one problem, King Phillip has chosen a bride, Ella. Will Ella step up to the role she was born to play or will her goal get in the way. This is a well written story that will have you turning the page to see what Ella and Phillip do next. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book via Hidden Gems and am voluntarily leaving a review. What a wonderful twist on an old fairy tale of Cinderella. This is bringing Cinderella into the 21st Century. Ella does have a stepmother and two stepsisters. However, instead of being forced into servitude, she gladly serves. Even though her stepmother was never maternal to her, she was never cruel. All Ella dreamed about was her freedom to pursue competitive riding in America. Even though she was born in Danovar, she grew up in the states. Now her stepmother wanted her to assist in getting one of her stepsisters married to the Danovar King, Phillip. The story follows Ella throughout her daily routines to get the Danovian King to notice one of her stepsisters. However, she never thought she was good enough for the King. He however saw Ella and was enamored by her. Was her freedom worth giving up for a life long servitude to the crown or would she make her way to the states to pursue her dream? As I read this story, all I could do was smile and on occasion sigh. This was a nice diversion from all the other heavy reading. I enjoyed this book.

With a touch of Cinderella meets a somewhat male version of The Princess Diaries, I found myself presented with a main couple that I just couldn’t root for, folks. At only 40% into it, I was repulsed by the idea sweet, gullible, always taken advantage of Ella was OK with having a very brief fling with King Phillip then deliberately handing him off to marry one of her stepsisters. The fact he was more than ready to do the same didn’t endear me to him, as well. No, frankly, I didn’t find that romantic at all. In fact, they did a disservice to each other by even entertaining that notion for a minute.

To have their almost first very intimate encounter interrupted because he needed to continue to meet/date the large number of other women staying under his roof only further proves my point.

Though in the past I’ve enjoyed several quick, flirty, steamy reads by this author, this storyline and mechanical writing missed the mark with me. Here’s to hoping others enjoy it. It just didn’t work for me.

A modern day Cinderella with glittery shoes
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. This is my 20th book by Leslie, as one of my favorite authors! Leslie quickly pulls you into the story of King Phillip of Danovar is not thrilled to have to marry by the age of 30, and his mother’s idea of a Summer House Party as a way to meet his bride. Ella was born in Danovar, but has lived in the United States after her father remarried. Her stepmother is trying to marry off one of her daughters and Ella agrees to help so that she can be finally free to live her own life. When Ella meets Phillip working on his motorcycle, she is attracted to him but turns down his ride on the bike. When they later meet at the 1st party, Ella is stunned to learn that the man working on his motorcycle is the king. When they start to spend some time together, they use letters as a means of communication. When it all seems to come together, it all falls apart. Will Phillip and Ella find their happily ever after? You have to read to find out and you will so enjoy the read!

This is the first book I have read by this author and I found it to be a quick, easy, enjoyable read. I liked both characters and thought the author did a great job of developing their chemistry. I liked that they developed part of their relationship through letter writing. It was old fashioned and sweet. I liked that Ella knew what she wanted and didn't settle. I also liked that in this updated telling of Cinderella, the step-mother and sister weren't the typically selfish individuals.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. I voluntarily read a copy of this book provided to me by the publisher through Netgalley.

King Phillip has to choose a wife and many women come to try and catch his eye. When Ella comes with her two step sisters, she wants to get one of them married to the King so she can leave and start her life over in the US knowing they will be taken care of. The King has to marry within a certain class and he really wants to marry for love. When he sees Ella, he is attracted to her, but thinks she is a maid. When Phillip learns who Ella is, he pursues her and tries to convince her to marry him. Ella is attracted to Phillip and thinks he could be a fling, until they start to have real feelings for each other. Ella is used to putting aside her feelings and dreams for everyone else and when Phillip starts to treat her the same way, she leaves him. I liked this story. I like how Ella finally stands up for herself and follows her heart. Good one.

This was a very enjoyable book. I laughed, snorted, cried and was deeply touched.
It has a fairy tale ring to it but deviates in a lovely way.
Of course there is a sexy hunk of a king, but an equally engaging soon to be queen.
Easy read that captures your heart and just makes you want to read more.

I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest
The characters + storytelling were very captivating
Phillip was prepared to marry anyone to keep his crown.
Enter Ella.
I don't think that Ella really thought what being a queen really was.
Now Phillip + Ella will have to see if their love is strong enough so survive this "royal mess."
The storytelling + the character's build were awesome!
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!

King Philip Gregor Humbert alcott knelt beside his favorite vintage Indian motorcycle . he wished he could stay there or better yet ride off into the sunset- once the motorcycle was fixed. There was unfortunately a gaggle of women halfway down the drive. His mother was throwing a Summer House party for him to choose his bride. Firing up the motorcycle usually brought Philip peace. But with his thirteenth birthday close there was hardly any peace for him. According to his country's law and his mother’s insistence he was to choose a queen by the time he was thirty which wasn’t far away. Or his irresponsible brother would take the throne It wasn’t that he didn’t want to get married, he had always been enamored with the idea of growing old with a woman he loved. But during this he wasn’t picking a wife so much as a queen. Someone who was capable of of ruling Danovar at his side. A Queen for stability, to continue the royal line, and what good she could do with the power of her influence. This meant he couldn’t marry for love and after seeing his parents and grandparents loveless marriages, he knew it was nothing to look forward to. Being King meant putting his country before his own desires. He needed a little freedom, a little time to himself. He’d be back in time to give the opening speech tonight. Than the last limo pulled up and he seen one of the women’s P A and he found he wanted her. It had been a long time since a woman had affected him this strongly. Her innocence was refreshing unlike the golddiggers here. Ella finally figured out a way to carry hers and her stepsisters bags at one time. Ella needed one of her two stepsisters to get engaged to the King. it was the only way Ella would finally have her own life. She had grown up in the United States and she wanted to return and ride horses competitively and work with them. Ella was all about duty, helping others, and following the rules.Than a hot man tapped her on the shoulder , he said he was thinking of taking a ride with her would be more fun than some royal function. Ella’s stepsisters weren’t interested in marrying the King. Than Philip finds out Ella isn’t a servant but eligible possibly to be his queen. Ella finds out at the first ball she has been flirting with the King. She offers to help Philip find a bride. But he has already decided he wanted to marry ella. He is determined to spend as much possible wit Ella as he can . Try to get her to stay. Ella has to decide if she can sacrifice her freedom for love as she is falling for Philip.Ella and Philip communicate through letters and meet secretly. Ella knows a Queens life is one of servitude. But then she gets a handwritten love letter and that kiss…. But once ella agrees to be Philip’s queen he seems to change and can’t seem to find time for her. He also tries to change her. Than he stabs her in the back and she leaves.
I enjoyed this book. It was a quick, easy , read. I also felt it was well written. I really liked the new slant on Cinderella like story other than how Philip changed and stabbed Ella in the back.I loved the fact her stepmother and step sisters weren’t cruel to her. Also things got hot between Ella and Philip. I liked that ella stood up for herself and that she had the strength to leave Philip when he did her wrong. But I do think Ella forgave Philip tpp easily. I did chuckle at times while reading this. I felt even thought this story was real ella acted realistically abitu weather to marry Philip and give up her freedom and dreams or not. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this story and I recommend it.

I love a good retelling of classic fairy tales and Royal Service does Cinderella quite proud. Just about everything you need to know upfront is in the cover description blurb.

Phillip is a charming man who wears the crown with pride and not a little hesitancy about his future bride. In order to rule he must marry, and that deadline to find a royal bride has about run out. He’s not looking forward to this get together at all, but one woman has caught his attention… even if she’s not in the running for his bride. Ella is a sweet and a determined woman. She’s about had it with her stepmother’s ways and if the only way she can find the freedom to do what she loves is to get her stepsister married to a king… then that’s what she’ll do. She didn’t expect that the man she found attractive was anything at all royal… but then one should never make assumptions, right?

I found Ella’s hesitation over giving up one kind of servitude for yet another to be completely understandable. Marrying a royal is not quite like hitching up with the guy next door. It’s a life time job as well as a marriage. So, I wasn’t surprised by Ella’s reactions to Phillip. I enjoyed their romance very much and I’m definitely looking forward to the next story in this series. Love a good romance involving royalty? Then you’ll want to pick up Royal Service, I believe you’ll enjoy yourself.

This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.

Cute modern version of Cinderella's story but with nicer step-sisters and step-mother. It was almost Cinderella meets The Bachelor until Phillip finds out that Ella was part of the nobility and he could marry her.

Parts were sweet when they would meet secretly and their note writing but it seemed like Phillip changed when Ella agreed to be his queen. He couldn't find time to see her and was already trying to change her. Granted, I thought that Ella was just a little to willing to be used by her family but Phillip didn't want her to change that! He wanted her to be a servant for the crown.

The worst was when he had to choose who to stab in the back and decided that it was Ella. I did not think that part made sense to me, he could have arrested the reporter and only one letter would have been revealed but he choose to let the reporter reveal all the letters if he kept quiet about the theft. One, if he kept the reporter jailed, one letter was a lot less exposure than all their letters, and two, even if the theft got revealed, Phillip was the king and could pardon the thief!

I am not sure that I could forgive as easily as Ella but the HEA was a good one!

A modern day fairy tale retelling that manages to be fresh, inventive and unpredictable. Yes, there are some parallels to Cinderella, but there's also enough differences to make it feel like an original story. Not only did I like both main characters but I thought that all the secondary characters were well drawn as well.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was an easy read, with enough going on to keep my interest and make me want to see what happened next. There was one incident however (no spoilers) that I thought was forced, both the incident and the characters' reactions to it. I can see why, because it ultimately led to a very satisfying ending. But I think it could have been arrived at in a different way. That incident is why this isn't a five star review.

A standalone, fun read with good characters and just the right amount of heat. Recommended to fans of romance and don't be put off by the fact it's a fairy tale retelling. I received a copy from Hidden Gems but have chosen to leave a review.

Lighthearted and sizzling version of Cinderella…This is a lighthearted and sizzling version of Cinderella. King Phillip is close to reaching his 30th birthday. Phillip has to either marry by then or allow his irresponsible brother to become king. His mother has set up a week long house party with all the eligible guests. Ella wants her one of her step-sisters to marry the king. Then Ella would be free to return to America to pursue a horse training business, Ella isn't sure if she wants to go from serving her step-family to serving a country From their first meeting, their relationship starts sizzling and their attraction builds. Due to his duties as king and his search for his queen, they exchange many steamy letters. I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Netgallery. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. This was a fun read for me. There are many amusing scenes as well as some steamy ones. I enjoyed the book so much that I read it in one afternoon.

Thanks to the publisher for a copy to read and give my honest opinion.

Cute cover, but all this mess with the Royal Wedding had me grabbing this book. Have to tell you though, the blurb is longer than the book. I think the blurb is a bit more detailed too since I don't recall some of that in the book.
Ella is a nice play on Cinderella type novelette as she takes her stepsisters to the party. The only explanation that the author gives is that Ella is better at taking care of her stepsisters than they are of themselves. Need something done? Ella is much better qualified.
King Phillip is turning 30 soon and law says he must have a queen. He thinks Ella is a maid and decides to have one last fling. When he finds out she is nobility things change.
I think the author could have made the ending a lot more suitable than a guy begging for the girl. After the upset that drives Ella away, why would he choose the letters over a thief...kind of made no sense. Three stars of entertainment!

With a clear nod to Cinderella, this book was a sweet and sometimes steamy fairy tale come true. I rather enjoyed that it wasn't a strict retelling, with only a nod to the old tale. Our King Philip isn't afraid to get his hands dirty, just afraid to let his country down. And Ella isn't held under her stepmother's thumb with evil stepsisters. They actually seem to care about her, but are just a little too dependent on Ella's good nature and willingness to help.
The story of how Philip and Ella get to know each other is just wonderful. From their first meeting to the end, it brought out their personalities and fun. Ella had quite a bit of spunk and I really liked that she followed her heart and wasn't afraid of tough choices. And I liked that Philip (eventually!) figured out how to balance his life.
Wonderful read all around and very hard to put down. I'm looking forward to reading more about the royal family in the rest of the series.

I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway.

This light hearted romance is a wonderful twist on the classic Cinderella story. King Philip of Danovia has to marry by his thirtieth birthday or the crown goes to his younger brother. He is having problems choosing his bride, so his mother invites all of the eligible maidens to The Summer House Party.

Ella Fernstone has retreated to the role of servant/personal assistant since her father's death. Her stepmother is forgetful in her determination to make sure one of her daughters marry the king. Ella wants to escape and be able to pursue her own dream. Her goal is to have one of her stepsisters marry King Philip.

I enjoyed reading Philip and Ella's story. It was a smoking hot read! The characters were fun. I liked the Cinderella twist without the stepmother being evil. Ella's stepsisters were sweet. I can't wait for the rest of this series!

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

A modern version of Cinderella mixed with the Prince and Me and a little pinch of The Selection and you have Royal Service. The Danovian prince Philip is supposed to be married before his 30th birthday. Therefore, his mother invites all eligible ladies from the country to stay with them in the palace, so Philip can pick a bride. When Philip spots Ella, he is strangely attracted to her. Thinking her a maid, he knows he should not be meddling with her, but with the other girls. Ella offers to help him find a bride. Because if he chooses one of her stepsisters, she will be able to full fill her own dream: working with horses on a farm in the United States.
But as time passes, Ella realizes she is falling for the prince. But can she give up her dream to change from serving her stepsisters to serving her country?
Find out for yourself in this lovely fairy tale story. Four out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.
