This collection of essays (and one short story) from the second year of the online magazine The Bitter Southerner maintains the high standards of the first BS print collection. The writing is consistently excellent and moving. An unexpected favorite was editor Chuck Reece's "The Dirt Underneath," about Will Harris's White Oak Pastures farm outside of Bluffton, Georgia. Harris has adopted sustainable, humane farming methods; this is a subject I didn't much worry or care about until I read Reece's inspiring essay.

Unfortunately, the book is poorly edited. There are several typographical errors, and some odd parenthetical phrases that were presumably hyperlinks in the original web articles. These sloppy details are annoying, but don't detract from the excellence of the writing.
