“Make an effort.” These three seemingly innocuous words send Cheryl Miller on her most challenging assignment yet. When Aunt Mitzi handpicks a new tenant for her cottage, she asks Cheryl to “make an effort” to befriend her. But Jayla Nuttall makes it plain she doesn’t welcome any overtures of friendship. Jayla is obviously determined to alienate Cheryl—and everyone else in Sugarcreek. But Cheryl, spurred on by Mitzi’s encouraging letters, sets out to find the culprit behind the series of events that seem intended to terrorize Aunt Mitzi’s tenant. Who is targeting Jayla with these vicious pranks? Or is she herself causing the damage?
Meanwhile, when the Sugarcreek Nursing Home opens a brand new assisted living wing, the activities coordinator invites Naomi to give classes in Amish cooking. Will the accolades cause Naomi to be vain, and pull her away from serving her family on their own farm just when they need her most?
I’m imagining you. You walk past as I water my front flowerbeds and we wave. You check the time as we both stand in a long line at the grocery store. You sit in front of me in church. I’m at my table in the coffee shop and you’re at yours.
We may smile politely and move on with our separate lives. Or one of us may speak, a simple invitation to conversation, and the words flow between us.
Here the adventure begins. When we meet someone new, we never know where it might lead.
I’ve been married over 40 years and have two adult kids and a son-in-law. We live in stunning Colorado at the foot of the Rockies, where the day lilies in my back yard grow as tall as I am. (No short jokes, please.)
Not every piece of my life is pretty, though. Some days I want to throw out whole chunks. But I am living each day looking for the grace of God to me, in me, and through me. Having your companionship along the way will help uncover a lot of great stories.
Homespun Suspicions is another fantastic mystery written by Olivia Newport in the Sugarcreek Amish Mystery series. In this story the amazing main characters are back trying to unravel another mystery involving a new resident by the name of Jayla. The newcomer does not make a great first impression on Cheryl and she is renting Aunt Mitzie's cottage. The rude, strong-willed Jayla starts being attacked in many ways but refuses to offer up the reason it may be happening. With Cheryl's promise to Aunt Mitzie to help Jayla she feels stuck. Phone lines are cut, a shower drained is clogged with a brand new shirt, a fire burns the back door, and then a physical attack on Jayla leads Cheryl to take precautions of security cameras which gives them the lead they need. As this mystery unravels the prime suspect is someone who appears to be innocent. The author has done an amazing job spinning this mystery for the readers enjoyment.
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.
Another enjoyable cozy Amish mystery with a visit to Sugarcreek, Ohio. Cheryl's aunt asks her to "make an effort" with the new cottage tenant, but Jayla is so difficult and nasty that she makes it hard to help her. When strange things happen around the cottage - cut phone line, clogged drain, backyard fire - it appears that someone from Jayla's past is trying to cause her harm. Cheryl and Naomi are on the case and, along with the police, finally figure out the mystery. Although I'm not sure how realistic it is, it's fun to see how Cheryl and Levi manage to merge his Amish and her "Englisch" backgrounds as they continue their married life.
29th book in series. Aunt Mitzi has loaned out her cottage to young women who at first glance seems to be rude, cold and unbearable. Mitzi has asked Cheryl to make an effort with her and manage the rental. Jayla (the young women) isn't making any friends with the townspeople either. After she moves in some strange things start happening to her. They find that her phone line outside has been cut. Then the next day her shower drain is clogged and Cheryl finds a shirt stuffed down the drain. Then someone starts a fire in the back yard and chars the back door and porch Jayla. Cheryl is trying to be friendly with Jayla while trying to find out what is behind these incidences.
This plot centered on a new resident in Sugarcreek. A young lady who Mitzi decided to rent her cottage to. Jayla brings a sour disposition and trouble. Cheryl's attempts to be her friend meet with resistance. Cheryl is off on another mystery.
