Princess Kelsey Bandar and Admiral Jared Mertz have beaten the savage Pale Ones only to find even deadlier enemies working hard to undo everything they’ve accomplished. To give the New Terran Empire even a slim hope of survival, they must explore a graveyard filled with dead ships watched over by a merciless AI, stop a coup determined to see the Imperial Throne fall, and then take the fight to the Empire’s enemies. What could possibly go wrong? This omnibus edition contains Books 4-6 in The Empire of Bones Saga (Ghosts of Empire, Paying the Price, and Recon in Force), as well as a previously unpublished short story.
#1 Bestselling Military Science Fiction author Terry Mixon served as a non-commissioned officer in the United States Army 101st Airborne Division. He later worked alongside the flight controllers in the Mission Control Center at the NASA Johnson Space Center supporting the Space Shuttle, the International Space Station, and other human spaceflight projects.
He now writes full time while living in Texas with his lovely wife and a pounce of cats.
I've already read the books included in this box set. I bought it for the added content, in the form of an amazing novella. It was amazing, I loved every nail biting second of it as we got to watch Princess Kelsey work through her issues. The enemy was fun to hate, and the setting was easy to envision. Definitely worth the price of this fine collection! Definitely worth giving a chance!
I powered through this volume quite quickly mostly based on the positive impressions from the first one. Here, however, we see start to see the lazy shortcuts and overall unimaginative writing that ultimately destroy any joy I had in the series later on.
Instead of taking the time and effort to develop the mysteries and character relationships that we already have in interesting and consistent ways, the author just starts throwing random ideas at the wall. Its not like he even sees what sticks, more like he glues them onto the wall no matter how poorly they actually fit there.
Well, more accurately the author seems to run out of real inspiration at the end of the fifth book in the series i.e. two thirds of the way through this volume. What this means is that it is mostly pretty fun, however, the sixth book is such a sharp drop in quality that it brought down my overall impression of the volume. Unfortunately I read all the way through the tenth book and it just keeps getting worse as the series goes on.
Continued adventures for the crew from the Terran Empire. I enjoy the story but am beginning to feel the Mixon is using the plot device of the "Palace Coup" as a crutch. After three coups in six books (two in the three books of this volume) it gets a little trite.
The introduction of an alien is a nice twist, but again Omega makes things so easy for the crew that it also feels like a crutch.
