Briony Valentine lives at home with her mother Lois, father James and two younger siblings. For as long as Briony can remember, she has been soft on the boy next door, Ernie. When the Luftwaffe begin their bombing campaign of the Midlands, Ernie is called upon to serve, as is James, and Bryony's world is torn apart. Each day the telegrams pour in to different families along their street and all Briony can do is pray for James and Ernie's safety. Will life for the Valentine family ever be the same, and will Briony ever see Ernie again?
Before becoming a writer, I was a Placement Support Worker and foster carer, and worked in the social services department after completing a teacher training course. Many children have joined my family over the years. I still live in Nuneaton, where many of my books are set, with my husband, Trevor, and our beloved dogs.
I was thrilled to discover that I'd become one of the top 250 most-borrowed library authors in the UK, and would like to thank all of you who have taken out my books over the last few years! I love meeting my readers and am always pleased to hear from you. I hope you will all continue to get in touch and please do sign up for my newsletter!
This book is going straight into my favourites list. I found this to be a very enjoyable story. Rosie Goodwin is a wonderful author, she writes stories that really draw you in. The main character is Briony Valentine, and the story begins in 1939 in Nuneaton when her family are preparing to say good bye to their father who is leaving to fight in the war. As the story moves on we are introduced to more characters all of which are well defined and described. The differences between Nuneaton and Poldak, in Cornwall are a real pleasure to read about. If like me you love stories based in war time and that involve children then this book is defiantly for you.
Brilliant couldn't put this book down, its a wartime story a family there dad went to war kids were sent away to there grandparents, how they survived.the character's were captivating you felt everything they went through.derserves more than the 5*rating.first book is read from this author won't be my last.
What a great read this was. I was completely engrossed and was sorry when I had finished it. Definitely one of my favourites but I do love Rosie Goodwin's books.
Another great read from Rosie. I really do enjoy her work and this was no exception. A lovely story and good characterisation although most of the ending was a bit predictable. I'm not sure about all the historic war details mentioned, I didn't check any of that information but I assume Rosie had done her research. My book 'Billy' was written in a very similar way, in that I wrote a bit of information at the start of chapters to keep the readers up to date with the facts of the war and timeline. A very minor detail - there are some typo errors which haven't been picked up. They didn't spoil it for me but for someone who is such a popular and prolific writer, I would have thought that her team would not allow her books to be published with faults.
As usual Rosie another brilliant book and story. I have been very busy for a few weeks. But still found time to sit and have a read. All your books Rosie go straight to my heart. I can’t put them down. Thank you and continue writing these amazing books. Mavis Hutt.
This was another book that belonged to my Grandma so I admit I didn't have the highest of hopes for it, but it met them at least and the story flowed well enough for me to finish the book in a few hours. With that said, I've read far better books and it isn't one I'll be coming back to.
What a fantastic book love loss and sadness all in one what a good book couldn't put it down many of a night I woke up and still had the book on my chest x
I loved this book so much that I've read it twice. Rosie really captures what life would have been like back in the 1940s. She has revived my passion for history fiction
Oh what a brilliant author Rosie is I have read 2 of her books now on to the next read this one you won’t be disappointed I laughed and cried nearly all the way through x
