"I ceased to be Emma on September, 20th . In 1956. At this time of the year when the blue of the sky turns bright and cold; when the leaves of the trees melt into blazing and melancholic shades as if they had just realized that they only had one life and that this life was about to end."To disappear in order to exist. In order to live. The fate of an American woman. The travel of a whole life. Within forty-three hours and fifteen minutes.
I enjoyed this story and liked the use of the journey across the country as the symbol of such a larger journey. Some of the phrasing betrays the writer as a non American, but that didn't pull me out of the story as much as it forced me to re-read certain sections to just absorb the feeling and intent. An over abundance of flowery descriptions placed me into this setting quickly. I could feel the weather, the atmosphere and mood. Overall an enjoyable read and I loved the alternative to a coming of age story.
