Old Lady Harley

Rate this book
After liberating New York City from her now-feral Gang of Harleys, poor Harley wants nothing more than to slip back into retirement in her coastal (and heavily guarded) paradise. But the Laughing Boys Gang has another idea--they'll follow her to the ends of the Earth, to drag her back to their leader!

In a dark and twisted future--is there any other kind?--the onetime Mistress of Mayhem thinks she's wrapped up her final adventure. But when a rampaging gang called the Laughing Boys attack, she'll have to dust off the old baseball bat and take one last swing at a certain ex-boyfriend.

There's just one problem: Harley already killed The Joker herself... didn't she?

Old Lady Harley's quest to find the truth about Mistah J's return will take her from the Arkham Retirement Home to the 51st state of Atlantis and back. And from President Power Girl to the Bane Twins to Gotham City's tyrannical ruler, the Batman (?!?!), everyone wants in on the action. Can the Crone Princess defeat these dystopian forces and still make it in time for the early-bird special?

Discover the answer in Old Lady Harley, the ultimate tale of everyone's favorite arthritic antiheroine--from writer Frank Tieri and artist Inaki Miranda!

Collects the full five-part Old Lady Harley miniseries and the story that started it all from Harley Quinn #42.

DC taking the piss out of Marvel’s Old Man Logan books? I’m up for that. Even though the original Old Man Logan by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven is an honest-to-goodness modern classic, I’m happy to see DC take a few shots at Marvel’s expense for a laff or two. But while I never thought it would be even half as good as the thing it’s aping I still didn’t think it was going to be THIS bad!

Old Lady Harley reads like Frank Tieri listing all the things he thought might be funny to see if DC characters were old and living in the post-apocalypse. So while some of the stuff here sounds good - it ain’t! Hoho, Wayne Gretzky’s the zombie president of Canada, Catwoman’s riding a motorised cart, Lobo lost his hair and got fat, Bane’s steroid abuse caught up with him and he’s a shrivelled husk of the man he was, and all the villains live in a retirement home! Geddit - cuz they olllllldds! Also the Batcave turns into a giant Bat-robot… that one’s actually on the borderline of so unhinged and barmy it’s cool.

Those things are kinda interesting for a moment and then when you realise that’s all it is - just the image of the thing - then it’s immediately boring. Because all Tieri’s done is hang all these things together for what they are, without any further development, on the flimsiest of plots: Joker’s dead but no he’s not and Harley’s finding out why because whatever - she needs something to do and she’ll never be free of Mistah J so that’s that.

Boring, pointless, meandering, unfunny, annoying - mix in numerous Mad Max references (‘member Fury Road? ‘member Thunderdome??) and that’s Old Lady Harley. An awful, tedious read. I suppose it’s on about the same level as Ed Brisson’s dismal Old Man Logan run so it succeeds on being the DC equivalent of that crapitude.

This was actually a lot of fun. A spoof of Old Man Logan mixed in with some Mad Max. Tieri is wittier than I remember. This was almost like a Mad Magazine spoof.

So many jokes. So little humour. It's really disappointing when you know a joke is going to fall flat before you're halfway through the word bubble. A book this short shouldn't have taken me five days to finish, but wading through the pile of unfunny one-liners and pointless set pieces was a momentum killer.

The title led me to believe this book would be a parody of Mark Millar's stellar Old Man Logan book. It goes as far as giving us a post-apocalyptic wasteland, some poorly-aged characters, and a few villain-themed henchmen. That's it. I'm unclear on how the world got this way, or how Harley was integral in shaping it. But the book is ushering me off to the next locale so fast I don't have time to really give a shit.

"It's so bad, I wanna give you a zero. But that's not possible. So I give you, a one."

Old Lady Harley collects issues 1-5 of the comic series and Harley Quinn #42 written by Frank Tierri with art by Inaki Miranda, mauricet, and Tom Derenick.

After the Joker died, Harley Quinn went into exile for years and finally come back to the world of civilization only to find out that the Jojer may still be out there. Joining forces with Red Tool, Killer Croc, and Catwoman, the fan will travel the world to see what exactly happened the day that The Joker died.

Obviously this book is poking fun of Marvel run of Old Man titles (Wolverine, Hawkeye, Peter Quinn) and has a somewhat decent premice, but I just couldn't get into in. It's mainly a collection of jokes and gags until they get a resemblance of story at the end. Not gonna lie, some of the jokes are good, some fall flat. It's a mixed bag. Can I ask what the point of Red Tool is? Harley is already DC's equivalent of Deadpool so why did they blatantly just rip off Deadpool again and give us Red Tool? Seems bizarre. The art is fine throughout the book. Give it a read if you find a good deal.

A five issue mini shot that will probably never link into continuity; but hey Amanda Conner covers and her buddy Frank Tieri writing is always good. Tieri has so many great pop culture jokes and has a lot of fun with the superheroes all being old. Is it campy? Yes. It is fun? Absolutely.
You gotta go into this one expecting ridiculous and just enjoy the amusing ride.
I did get caught off guard the plot, although admittedly I maybe should have figured it out, which was a nice surprise. Overall I’ll take fun Harley, old or young, everyday of the week.

The art was good, the spoof of Mad Max was kinda funny but that's about it. Just a strung together story for no real reason. The only other decent part was at the end, with the explanation of why Harley gave her son up, and why she left. Those felt real, and like real plot, but the rest not so much. I don't know if I will buy it or not yet... I do like Harley so there is that but otherwise...

Meh. Everything about this is meh. Its like a bad fanfic written by someone who doesn't really get the character meh. It is just a shameless rip off of Old Man Logan mixed with Mad Max. Nothing really new or interesting and without enough humor or critique to be a satire. Just meh.

Maybe I would have liked this more if I had more than a passing knowledge of Old Man Logan. But I don't, so this book ends up being lots of jokes about Harley's ex-husbands, another back-slide into a Joker relationship, and just a lot of terrible references, sight gags, and tired cliches (with 'funny' future ads), as Harley comes back from Coast City trying to find out what happened to Joker (is he really dead? How many times does this same plot have to come up?), and wanders through Gotham, Bludhaven, Vegas, Atlantis, and New York. It brings back a lot of characters from Harley's series, which is okay, although the prominence of Red Tool is like a dentist drill running through the entire book. The final reveal is a weird tonal shift that really doesn't feel earned. The art is okay sometimes, but some sections are pretty poor.
Maybe I would have given this another star if I had read Old Man Logan, but without that grounding, there's no real parody familiarity working and nothing here is worth the reading otherwise.

Mostly annoying with a few really fun bits. Parodies need to be better than the things they are parodying, and this one only rarely achieves that high bar.

Harlequin 40 or so years later travels America trying to hunt down what seems to be a resurrected Joker.

While this is meant to be largely for laughs, not only is it not very funny neither is it much of a story. Tieri desperately tries to parody several different superior properties (chiefly Old Man Logan, but there's also Mad Max, The Dark Knight Returns, The Matrix as well as many others thrown in there) but they are so weakly strung together it's hard to care. Harley has numerous encounters with a selection of famous faces, enjoying their twilight years, but is chiefly accompanied by Red Tool (a weak Deadpool rip-off) and later by Catwoman and Killer Croc (who are apparently married now?)....and so it goes on.

There are some nice Amanda Conner and Paul Mounts covers who provide a much better representation of an aged Harley than the main artists Inaki Miranda, Maurice and Tom Derenick do. The artwork itself is relatively decent but few of the aged characters look the age they are supposed to be - least of all Harley, who basically has a few more lines added to her face and a haircut to illustrate the 50/60 year old she is meant to be. There is so little of the charm and humour that the infamous anti-heroine is known for, that this really could have been anyone in the lead role which is a damning verdict on a story that is chiefly trading upon that!

Why this book:
The Old Man/Old Lady paradigm and Harley. How could I resist?

Cover and Interior Art:
The art is very well done here. I like this style.

The Feel:
Harley feels like Harley here.

Favorite Concept:
The Brainiac 5. Kirby Kink. Malibu Stormy Daniels. Great concepts. This story, these types of stories when they really go for it are littered with great concepts.

Tropes:
Old Man Logan-ing the DC Universe is well done here. Tidbits everywhere.

The Sigh:
Mad Max, fake Deadpool...Red Tool...sigh, and the sexual rage of Goat Boys. And jokes about Staten Island. Not sure about this.

Missed Opportunity:
I wish Joker Jr had been the Dee Dee Twins.

Another nice twist would have been if the Dee Dee Twins were Harley and Dick’s children.

Pacing:
Well paced.

Last Page Sound:
Of course, that bastard is really still alive.Or at least an AI clone of him.

Conclusions I’ve Drawn:
I liked it. If there is more Old Lady Harley, I'll read it.

Things I’d Like to See:
Would love to see more Old Lady Harley.

Author Assessment:
I will be looking into more Tieri stuff.

Editorial Assessment:
Well done.

This plays out like DC's version of Tank Girl. I only put my name down for this because the library had it on order, but I ended up liking it. Harley Quinn is everywhere since her introduction into the DC cinematic universe, but this was my favourite storyline so far. DC should've added this to the Black List Label and gone full tilt crazy with this storyline. There is probably a little too much Harley Quinn in the Black Label print so maybe that's why they went the standard label. Frank Tieri has the opportunity to go nuts with the core series and it is a fun read to say the least.

Why the 4?

It's harmless fun. There are moments of craziness and the incoherent nature of the storyline suits the universe. The twist on certain storylines adds a bit of fresh air to the usual DC universe. I liked what they did with Bruce Wayne, something left field and I had to give this book a recommendation straight away. It's a little too safe for my liking, but it's crazy to say the least. I honestly thought this was a riff on the Tank Girl comic and that's not a bad thing, it's a compliment.

A parody type comic of not only Old Man Logan, but also alot of dystopian, post-apocalyptic movies and stories as well!

The book opens with a single issue that kind of "birthed" the rest of the volume, which was a one shot story of Old Lady Harley. It was... not good. Which is shocking because I thought to myself, why would you make a whole volume based on a story that is mediocre at best. But they move forward anyways and they give us a story that is... a bit better but not great. Basically in the future, Harley reveals that she hooked up with the Joker one more time, had a kid, abandoned the kid then Which, I hate stories like this because it just such a massive step back for Harley as a character to go back with the Joker. Especially when its under the pretense of "maybe he changed". Ugh.

But the story has some decent laughs and was actually kind of sincere sometimes. It worked enough that I was able to finish the book and not be as mad at myself for reading it as I was. But if you like parodies a plenty, this book is for you!

Oh wow another plot where Joker is dead but probably not, how original… Some drawings and neon fruit candy coloring are cool. It’s funny to see Catwoman grow into an old cat lady, and see some of the classics in gen but that’s it. Every writer in New 52 has this same try hard nonstop, wannabe Deadpool humor. The chicken bit guy and Harley having a million ex husbands including Gary Busey is ok funny but doesn’t add anything.

So dumb Harley didn’t wanna kill anymore back in the day and believed J wouldn’t. I could maybe get over that with some catalyst or H usually being self-deceiving anyway, but when she finds out she tattle tales him to the Justice League? Lame, random, impersonal. And she doesn’t stick around to even follow up after decades if they actually did? The double twist end was so cringey, so ugly, not terribly original.

Thought it was weird whenever Wonder Woman intertwined with these stories, but the Clockwork Orange boys? Too much atop all the other random brands. This also just goes on for way too long. And then of course there’s a freakin sequel.

I wasn't a huge fan of this comic. I read it as it was part of the Excelsior Award. The concept of an older Harley sounded appealing. However, the comic is a mash-up of a Mad Max themed world with many random pop culture references. The story wasn't anything new and the strange set up of it made it difficult to follow.

The artwork was amazing and certain elements of the story did make me laugh. Yet, for me, the mark was missed more often than it hit.

A story about Harley coming to terms with all her crimes and repenting for time lost mixed in with a lot of crazy and a subplot about zombies.

I'm sure Harley fans will love it but it was just a bit too odd for me.

First starting with the short that was in the main Harley Quinn title, this Volume adds on the 5 part miniseries as well. Pretty much the typical insanity of a Harley title, but with all the random absurdity of not having to stay canon. Calling on old versions of her friends, they unite together to combat the return of the long-thought-deceased Joker, who ultimately turns out to be her and Mistah J's son.
Ending with a twist that leaves room for a sequel, Old Lady Harley entertains, while not taking itself too seriously.
Recommend.

A hilarious and gritty dystopian future for the world of DC Comics, only a zany character like Harley Quinn could appropriately bring this story to life. Seeing the state of the world in this apocalyptic world is fascinating to see, with a nation of zombies on one side and a nation led by a villain on the other, the United States is in a state of chaos, and Harley must navigate it her way to find out if the Joker has truly returned. Dark secrets and shocking revelations await for this amazing series, with fantastic artwork that is reminiscent of Mad Max.

When I first saw this comic I wasn’t even sure I wanted it. The concept seemed a little out there for me. After reading it I can safely say, this comic is great!! It’s a typical funny Harley comic but also allows you to see the human side of Harley. The side with a huge heart who loves her friends and family. Highly recommend this comic for fellow Harley fans.

Fun mini-series to bridge the Amanda Conner/Jimmy Palmiotti era towards the next one for Harley Quinn. Doesn’t take itself seriously, but still presents enough serious seeds that look to be planted towards whatever is next for Harley.

(A little disappointed at how Batman Beyond was teased, but nothing came of it. However, that is just me being biased for anything Batman Beyond.)

Tries way too hard to be funny, but there's really only about one or two visual jokes that actually land. It all ends up being really busy, but nothing really happens apart from Harley getting bounced from one location to the next.
