The Park Avenue Face: Secrets and Tips from a Top Facial Plastic Surgeon for Flawless, Undetectable Procedures and Treatments

Rate this book
Your face defines you. It influences how people perceive you at work, at play, and even at home. But what if something about your face doesn't make you feel like the real you? In The Park Avenue Face, dual board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Andrew Jacono reveals how to achieve flawless, undetectable plastic surgery so you can fix what you don't like, restore what you've lost, or prevent signs of aging. From his elite Park Avenue aesthetic surgery center, Dr. Jacono has enhanced tens of thousands of faces not by prescribing an arbitrary standard of beauty, but by amplifying each patient's individual beauty for totally natural results. A global authority in advanced facial plastic surgery, he has presented clinical research and conducted live surgery in front of peer audiences at over 100 plastic surgery symposiums around the world, including at Harvard, Yale and Stanford Universities. Now, he's ready to share his expertise with you. High-end Park Avenue clients want to fight the signs of aging while highlighting their best features. They want lips that look like their own lips, eyes that look like their own eyes. They want facial features in line with their ethnicities. Park Avenue clients want to look powerful yet approachable, wise yet fresh, and above all, natural. With Dr. Andrew Jacono's advice, you can have the Park Avenue Face no matter who you are or where you live. The Park Avenue Face also highlights a trend unique to the United States—a distinct difference between conceptions of beauty on the west coast versus the east coast. Where the West Coast Style is often about changing your personal signature, the East Coast Style prioritizes maintaining your personal signature. Through this up-close look at coastal trends, the reader will learn how to define and achieve a natural look—a face that reflects the person they have always been, and the person they strive to be, not someone they don't recognize in the mirror. If you want a face with character and depth that looks ageless and don't want a stretched, artificial or generic look, Dr. Jacono will show you how to get there. If you are considering any kind of facial enhancement, from minor and non-invasive treatments such as simple injections or a laser treatment to more involved surgical procedures such as a full-on facelift, this is your resource. The Park Avenue Face will show you how to avoid the quacks, the fads, the financial waste, and the dangers. Dr. Jacono will help you determine how you want to look and how best to get there. Featuring fascinating patient anecdotes, dozens of before-and-after photographs showing what the various procedures can accomplish and line drawings by veteran medical illustrator William Winn, this comprehensive guide will fully prepare you to step into a doctor's office and discuss your facial enhancement options. You'll know how each treatment works, how long you will take to recover, and how much change you can expect. If there is something about your face you think is holding you back—decide if making a change is right for you. Let The Park Avenue Face guide you to becoming your best you.

“Surgery for men should not be overdone, to avoid feminizing the face.”

What I appreciate about this book is the fact that Jacono goes in-depth regarding procedures, selecting a surgeon, and the layers of skin and muscle that are affected by the most common plastic surgeries. I do also appreciate his willingness to be honest about keeping up on research and retiring practices and medications deemed harmful by new literature. It's also a visually appealing book, with many sources and photographs of both men and women.

But.

As some may know from other reviews, I am not exactly pro-plastic surgery/pro-elective surgery. I mean, if you're going to do it, then definitely be well-read about it and do your due diligence to learn about what the procedures and recovery entail. This book does a good job of that.

My main critique about this book is highlighted in the above quote, which is oft repeated in varying manners: X procedure should not be overdone on men, because it will make them look feminine.

Now, this is not an academic text. Jacono's not out here trying to be exclusively pro-plastic surgery (at times reminding readers that these are real surgical procedures, not quick fixes to one's confidence). But it's quite telling of an entire industry that clearly relies on feminizing women while simultaneously opening their doors to men yet cautioning them against looking too feminine. It's almost as if this field of surgery was created to put women in their place, to remind women that it is their responsibility to take beauty into their own hands while men get to look like utter potatoes when they grow older. Of course, nowadays, men are more willing to get plastic surgery, but their masculinity may or may not be compromised depending on what procedures they get. It's so nice that men are advised against the more invasive types of surgery in order to maintain their individuality.

Eye. Roll.

Additionally, Jacono does offer a peek into the two "leading" styles--the east coast look (refined, mature, just tightening up one's features) and the west coast look (you got plastic surgery and you WANT people to know you got plastic surgery). He argues that even a small procedure can help with one's confidence, and that there's thousands of ways to make you really look like you. Yet, he seemingly also fails to realize that no woman seems to want a bump on her nose, no woman seems to want a less defined chin, no woman seems to want a strong brow line. So how is plastic surgery helping women retain their individuality if it's mostly just making women look the same?

Sigh.

Let's face it - there is still a lot of stigma around plastic surgery, and I personally know women who are planning on having certain procedures done in the future without having anything but very vague ideas about the techniques and materials used, which is a sure way into train-wrecking your face. We all age, women's bodies go through tremendous change, and there's nothing wrong with wanting to fix certain things when life has left its traces. So screw the taboo and start doing your due diligence, do it early, and do it well.

The book draws back the curtain on the most cutting-edge (ba-dum-tss!) surgical and non-surgical options out there. It does an excellent job on tutoring the reader through the pitfalls of it too, and shows which procedures don't suit which kinds of faces, which ratios have to be maintained in order for it to look natural, and I especially loved how the author differentiates what to take into consideration for different ethnicities.

Most importantly, he takes a critical stance towards jumping onto the latest beauty trend bandwagon, shows which procedures simply don't work, and most importantly, affirms time and again the importance of having a quality surgeon who will not push their own ideas with their patients. I would use this book as a tool to substantiate vague ideas about that face lift you might want in 20 years, or if you're not sure if that nose job is the actual way to go (random examples, not mine).

One star minus for product placement, albeit unpushy, and I would have hoped for a bit more in-depth information on the pros and cons of certain types of fillers on certain parts of the face, but overall it remains very readable and accessible. Good stuff!

A good read for medical students interested in understanding some of the procedures performed within aesthetic plastic surgery. Nonetheless, this is written towards the potential plastic surgery patient. I find that Dr. Jacono does a notable job of deconstructing the complexities of plastic surgery and delivering it in a digestible manner. His clinical judgment is supported by several peer-reviewed journals, and he is certainly an expert in particular domains. Looking forward at some point to look at his 2021 text The Art and Science of Extended Deep Plane Facelifting, which documents his experience with over 2000 patients.

- FDA approval for plastic surgery product only tests for safety, not efficacy

- Inner eye brows should end at the inner edge of eyelids

- Many of the procedures used in yesterdays do produce an unnatural look after the patient reaches a certain age

- Botox: has to be re-injected every several months (author compares it to retouching hair root). The mechanism of Botox is simply numb a portion of the face so there will be less tension of the area

- Many of the procedures can be done within minutes, some requires more recovery time

I loved this book. Very different from what I normally would pick up. Great informative information about plastic surgery, but also alot of other information such as information about skin care, diet, and natural aging. It helps provide all details on facial surgery and it’s process, complications, and recovery.

An informative and holistic read. I must admit, I was “influenced” to read this because it’s something I’ve always considered later on in life. I’ll put this book on the back shelf for a while.
