Part 2, what to say?
First, I think this one has my favorite cover design, it looks so punk and badass.
Part 2 picks up in the post-apocalypse part of the series that we will spend the rest of our adventure in. That said, this one is quite a bit less scary than the first one was – no longer are we watching the world collapse, it has changed to the point that it's closer to a Fallout game than our daily existence.
Our main characters have grown since the first book and new layers to their depth are peeled back, exposed, salted, and laid back down. Things aren't easy in the new world and our characters ain't always wearing shining armour. The world they live in, the societies that have arisen In the Shadow of Extinction range from vile and disgusting, to understandable and pitiable, with even a few threads of hopefulness mixed in.
Those vile and disgusting societies? They touch on ideas that are shocking and sick but not surprising in the world, and they touch on them with much taste and respect and it is clear that Warner is not justifying the actions of a sick humanity – and, even in the darker moments, his hope and compassion shine through.
I am so excited to finish this series, it has been a helluva ride and as everything seems destined to come to a head in book 3, I can't wait!

The strange new world
The description for this trilogy says it takes place over a fifteen year span. Admittedly sO wasn't expecting this instalment to start with a 15 year time jump from the previous volume. We see were the main survivors have ended up since the end of the last book and how they changed , even if it's by degrees in some cases, for both better or worse. It is a tale of to stories for the most part. The first part mainly deals with The majority of the first, I want to say two thirds of the book deals with the last, supposedly, safe city in America and what's going on. While undermining with the first two thirds but fully taking center stage in the last third we go across the ocean and keep up with the group of survivors there first in the middle East and ending up in Paris. It in these chapters were we see most of the kaij u action. There's even a defector "hero" monster, it was hinted at in guestbook but it's really pushed here. Over all I'd say it's a decent follow up to the Last book and sets up the next one rather nicely. So if you read the previous instalment then pick this up to see were the survivors ended up.
