Eva Driscoll’s brother was killed in a fake suicide, and he’s not the only one - other members of his Special Forces squad are also dying in mysterious circumstances. Eva teams up with Rees Colback, a former member of her brother’s unit. She isn’t one to stand by and let this happen, and do nothing - there will be retribution, because make no mistake, she isn’t one to cross swords with!
One big problem though, those responsible for the deaths now have Eva in their sights, she might run but can she hide?
Wow, this was one action packed adventure, and I was caught up in the action from the first page to the last, making this a thrilling and immensely satisfying read!
We are following the story of CIA trained Eva Driscoll, who is avenging her brother's murder, with the help of the only member of her brother's Special Forces squad hasn't been murdered yet. Eva needs to find out why her brother and his squad have been targeted and she is determined to kill the people behind this conspiracy, before those people kill her.
I can have trouble keeping up with the action when there is a lot of fast paced shooting, but throughout all the action scenes, they were so well written that I could visualize them as they happened. There is a second book that will continue Eva's search for the people behind this conspiracy and I'll be sure to read that book when it is published.
I do think Eva seemed too "perfect" despite her flaws. She is this superwoman who can outwit the best, despite being in situations that appear to be overwhelming. I set that aside and just went with the flow of the book, accepting that Eva is so good at what she does that there is no way I can understand just how everything can come together so well. I'm pretty sure Eva would make a great female James Bond.
Thank you to Alan McDermott. Amazon Publishing UK, Thomas & Mercer, and NetGalley, for this ARC.
Alan McDermott’s newest novel “Run and Hide” should fulfill the dreams of every conspiracy theorist who reads it. If your beliefs lie elsewhere, you may find it difficult to suspend disbelief through this entire book.
I could appreciate the tightly woven storyline that neatly wrapped all the characters together in a natural fashion. When the author first began unloading new names every chapter, I felt a bit overwhelmed and questioned how Mr. McDermott would pull it all together and have everything make sense. By the middle of the book, however, he deftly roped in all the characters and tied them neatly together. This was the five-star element of the book.
Unfortunately, other aspects weren’t given the same top-notch treatment. Main character Eva Driscoll is skimpily drawn. We know little about her except what we see when she is in action: a smart, cold, calculating woman whose skills place her in superhero status. Eva’s prowess is matched by Henry Langton, a shadowy person who, through his masquerade as a philanthropist, actually is the most powerful person in the world. This sets up the classic match between the female superhero and a super-villain. This is great fodder for comic book fans, but not for readers looking for a serious thriller.
On numerous occasions, scenes are “rewound” so that readers first see it through the perspective of Eva and her partners and then once again through the eyes of their adversaries. While this can be a way to introduce necessary facts, these extra chapters added nothing new to the book and only achieved slowing the pacing of the story. If the author felt it was important to see both views, flipping back and forth in real time would have been more effective. Forcing the reader to relive several events twice served no purpose.
The ending was anticlimactic as I felt the author inserted his own spoiler, leaving readers nothing to do until they reach the expected finish. Although Mr. McDermott sets up for a second book, “Run and Hide” stands on its own as a complete story. While this book was okay, I found it over the top and difficult to believe as well as identify with the main characters, and probably will pass on the next offering. Three stars.
My thanks to NetGalley, Amazon Publishing UK and Thomas and Mercer for an advance complimentary ebook.
Well, having read all of Alan McDermott's books, including his critically acclaimed 'Tom Gray' series, this manages to blow them all out of the water! Simply delicious, and a rare new series that has everything. There is something for everyone to enjoy here. I read hundreds of crime fiction/mystery/thrillers per year and I find due to that I am not rendered speechless by them anymore except on a rare occasion, but this is a whole different story, and this is that rare and delightful occasion. If I, a crime thriller junkie, adored this it will be all the more incredible to those who read the genre less than I happen to.
This book utilises the cult of conspiracy theory to create an unpredictable and perfectly paced plot. Being a lover of those theories, and what draws people to believe in them, I couldn't have enjoyed this more if I tried. One of the most captivating aspects of the novel was Eva Driscoll herself, a fierce, tenacious, strong, female lead character. This is only the first book and I know Eva and I are likely to become firm friends. I cannot wait to see her develop as a character and travel with her on her investigative adventures. The body count steadily rises as the action continues non-stop. At its heart, this is a political thriller, with Eva in the role of kickass heroine and former CIA assassin who is seeking to avenge her brothers faked suicide. 'Run and Hide' follows her intensely personal journey as she attempts to find answers. It isn't exactly a wholly original concept, although i'm not sure there really are any unique ones still to be used, but it is written in such a compelling manner that it exceeded all of my expectations.
I cannot wait to read the follow-up to this entitled 'Seek and Destroy' out on 14th Novermber 2018 - get that written down folks because it's going to be a good 'un! A well deserved five-stars. I rarely say this, but five stars doesn't seem enough for this spectacularly thrilling novel. I hope it is especially successful. It certainly deserves to be. I don't often gush like this about a book, but I truly feel it is warranted here. Undoubtedly, one of the best thriller writers in the genre today.
Many thanks to Thomas & Mercer for an ARC. I was not required to post a review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
Revenge, a dish best served with lethal force. Eva Driscoll has been trained to be a lethal force to be reckoned with and when her Special Forces brother is murdered in a cover up operation, she will stop at nothing to expose the truth, but is she ready to face a foe so formidable it has the government in its pocket?
RUN AND HIDE by Alan McDermott is for those conspiracy lovers who want that over-the-top action, the dark and dirty secrets of power exposed and a heroine who will stop at nothing in a cat and mouse game of survival against the government machine.
Eva was trained to kill for her country, but has she been betrayed by the very government she swore to protect? Where does the true power come from? Could it be true that the greed of powerful businessmen pulled her strings, too? Are they behind her brother’s “suicide?” Never mess with family, never…
Dark, gritty, full-throttle action is packed in from start to finish as Eva and her collection of unlikely allies take on the monsters pulling the world’s strings, but this time those monsters just may get hung by the very strings they manipulate.
Eva is that heroine who is faster than a speeding bullet, able to out think the enemy and survive against all odds. Hey! This is fiction, and if one lets go of reality, who is to say, there aren’t people out there just like Eva? Rapid-fire pacing, hard-hitting action and the imagination of a very talented author made this one fly past at the speed of light, all while keeping us wondering what will Eva do next!?!

Wow! What a great book. Eva Driscoll, a CIA agent, could seriously kick some ass. And along with her men, Colback, Sonny, and Smart, as well as another teammate that I can’t tell you about, they killed a lot of bad guys.
This was about the ESO, Executive Security Office, a group of Billionaires and one Trillionaire who pretty much run the world and they had anyone killed that even thought about getting in their way. Unfortunately, Henry Langton, the Trillionaire, made the mistake of having Eva’s brother killed and that brought on a war.
There was a surprise at the end and a lot of unanswered questions but we won’t see any answers until November 14th.
There was no romance and the F-bomb was used 24 times.
As to the narration: Angela Dawe was absolutely wonderful. Every man had his own voice so you knew who was talking without the book telling you. She’s one of my top 5 female narrators.
Run and Hide is the first installment in new to me author Alan McDermott's Eva Driscoll series. Protagonist Eva Driscoll has been trained to be a lethal force to be reckoned with. But, after her Special Forces brother Jeff is murdered in a cover up operation, she will stop at nothing to expose the truth. But, is she ready to face a foe so formidable it has the government in its pocket? This is a fast paced, action packed story that will grip your attention from the first page and hold it right thru the disturbing ending.
After reading a lot of crime fiction recently, this was a wonderful reminder of how much I love breathless action thrillers about conspiracies with near-superhuman protagonists outsmarting the baddies against overwhelming odds. It reminded me somewhat of the Camel Club series, but with an awesome heroine. I have added the authors previous series, about Tom Gray, to my “buy soon” list - just as soon as I’ve caught up with my NetGalley pile of course.
Eva Driscoll, former CIA assassin, finds out that her brother and his ex-army friends have been murdered, and manages to save the last one, Colback, from the same fate. Going on the run together with another discredited ex-colleague, IT genius Farouk, they take on the might of the shadowy ESO, billionaires who run America, and therefore the world, and will stop at nothing in the pursuit of power and profit. They are joined by Brits Sonny and Len, who I assume/hope feature in the earlier series, as they are great characters.
I thoroughly enjoyed this, preposterous though the plot may be. There are shootouts, car chases, disguises, evil megalomaniacs - it would make a great movie - but it makes a change to have a super-cool (in both senses of the word) near-sociopath as the lead - with male back-up accepting her authority. It would be great if the next one could be written in the first person to get inside Eva’s head. The ending sets us up nicely for the next book, which I can’t wait to read.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. This was published this week.
Run and Hide by Alan McDermott grabbed my attention right away from the first few pages and kept it throughout the entire book! From the first few pages, I quickly gather that Rees Colback is not your average man. He is a quick thinking fighting machine, which is good because everyone is after him. A last minute way out is presented to him in the form of Eva Driscoll, who appears on a motorcycle and helps him get away. The two of them start on an adventure to find out why her brother was killed and why they want Rees dead. Along the way they gather support for what becomes their fight against the ESO (Executive Security Office). The ESO is bad. Super rich, horrible men who are controlling the government, justice system, police, and the media.
What do you want in a spy novel? Action? Conspiracies? Bad guys and better good guys? A female protagonist that is so strong and powerful you find yourself looking for flaws?
The characters are pretty amazing, Eva is very much a leader and strong....actually, let me just let you know she doesn't believe in showing mercy.... She does have a big heart and we see a glimpse of that through stories told about her by her friends. Strong enough to do what needs to be done without overthinking it. She's so independent and efficient.... an improved version of Jason Stathum in one of his amazing movies. That is who she reminds me of. We all have our favorite spy characters or actors and Stathum is mine, so this is a huge compliment. I also loved Sonny and Len- I will have to check out more of McDermott's novels so I can get to know them better. They were characters that are easy to underestimate. I love that!!
The writing is good... back and forth between different perspectives...and the conspiracy is one of the better ones I have read in a long time. Very believable...kind of looking around wondering if the ESO exists.... I definitely recommend it and look forward to reading more Eva Driskoll novels in the future. (Hoping for more character development there too).
Thank you to NetGalley, Alan McDermott, and Amazon Publishing UK for an advanced reader's copy to review. Thank you for your hard work! As always, my opinions are my own.
CIA operative, Eva Driscoll, involves herself in a huge conspiracy when she rescues her brother's friend, Rees, from a hit. First, they have to figure out who wants Rees dead and then why. Turns out it is some very powerful people that quickly pull the plug on Eva's resources and make her a target as well. She has to find allies if she has any hope of bringing down these bad guys.
The action in this book starts right away, so be prepared to jump in with both feet running, and it keeps pace throughout the book while the group gets to the bottom of what is going on and who is responsible. Eva is one badass chick with nothing but hard edges, but I like her for it. I'm willing to see what happens next in her story.
GNa CIA wet work specialist Eva Driscoll and her long-time geek buddy Farooq Naser combine forces in an effort to find the killers of her brother, joined by a couple of Brit spook friends from the past and an endangered newcomer, Rees Colback. And Eva is going to need all the help she can get. The reach of her adversaries is world wide, and she is fast running out of places to hide.
This series is exciting. The pace is double time but that's ok, as it's a book you will find it hard to put aside. I can't wait for number two. Alan McDermott writes a fast paced tale with lots of attention to detail and his characters are well defined. I was pleased to see he has several novels out there I can catch up on.
I received a free electronic copy of this novel from Netgalley, Alan McDermott, and Thomas & Mercer in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me.

A great beach read book. Better than most political conspiracy / revenge driven type books. Lots and lost of action. A little techno-babble, but not enough to measurably slow the story down. While I've read this same type story innumerable times in the past, it's the characters that make this book. Especially Eva. Given the teaser thrown in at the very end, I suspect this is just the beginning of a series. If so, I'll definitely be looking for the next one.
Action packed female lead character! (audible review)
I love a great strong badass lead female character. So this book was right up my ally. I liked it a lot.
This is full of action, action and more action. I like Eva, I do hope we get some more background and character development in the next book, that did seem to be missing here. But it was still a great book. I also liked that this was NOT written in the 1st POV. Whew!
I am looking forward to the next book.
As for the narration, it was great. I like Angela Dawe these days she does a good job on giving all the characters their own distinctive voice and reads with emotion as called for.
The three books in this series are all Free Read Free Listen with KU. Bonus!
This was one of those novels that shot out of the gate and sprinted all the way to the finish line. There was pretty much no lead-up to the main plot getting started and characters were introduced left and right and sometimes it got a bit confusing. Some of the plot seemed a bit far-fetched a times, then seemed a bit too easy for the protagonists to solve, and then other parts seemed very believable. Certainly not a bad spy-thriller, but one that could have used a bit of work here and there. It did succeed in keeping me entertained and wanting to read the remaining books in the series to find out how things end.
You need to keep your wits about you when reading this super fast-paced thriller where the unbelievable happens. Eva Driscoll enlists help from two of Toms old crew when her brother is said to have committed suicide, she is convinced that he would never have taken his own life and this is confirmed when other members of his team are confirmed dead. She is determined to get answers but has no idea what she is up against.
Eva, the feisty main protagonist in the story, is a former assassin for the CIA. She believes she has been killing the enemies of her country. When her brother is killed, she questions her whole basis of her previous life and finds things are not as she’d thought. This is a brilliant conspiracy theory novel. Taking a stand, she finds things get worse for her, and the ex-soldier who shares her task. She’s a resourceful woman and we go from thinking she’ll make it to fearing she’s doomed – and back. Bringing in an old lover of hers was a master stroke from author Alan McDermott. He has always written an exciting novel. Here, he’s surpassed himself. A brilliant read.
This thriller has one badass heroine. I'm talking about chop-a-man's-dick-and-balls-off-and-shove-them-down-his-throat badass.
Eva Driscoll is a CIA operative gone rogue. She is trying to figure out who killed her brother and she uses every one of her masterful skills to take this entity down. Eva is a spy, first and foremost. She doesn't allow previous relationships or entanglements to interfere with her goals. She has and will use her body to get what she wants. She kills and tortures and has sex when she pleases.
We don't get much of a 1st person pov from Eva, so she comes off as driven and heartless. She reminded me of the psychopath heroine from Jane Doe. Eva is always one step ahead and she never let me down. There's still the thrill of trying to figure everything out in the book, but you can count on Eva to always have a plan. With plenty of action scenes and many players on the board, there's always something happening.
Action packed all the way. This is a really good read with the main character being the hero. All the other characters are well developed, and the storyline is like a rollercoaster with twists and turns all the way. A must for the next books in this series as there's definitely going to be more twists and turns to come. Thank you Alan McDermott for a really good read. I highly recommend this series.
This new thriller is listed as An Eva Driscoll Thriller Book 1 which suggests there will be a series. If the standard of this one is maintained the world of the thriller novel has a huge success on its hands.
Eva Driscoll, the heroine, has been a CIA agent, ready and willing to take on any task to protect her country. That's until her brother's murder is disguised as suicide and she finds out that his close circle of friends has also been targeted and eliminated. The last of the group is Rees Colback, another member of Special Forces and she reaches him at the same time as whoever is trying to take him out, and that's when the fun starts.
If there is a flaw in the plot it is why these friends needed to be targeted at all – they could have been left alone, but to explain why here would introduce too many spoilers. It is explained briefly later in the story, but it's unconvincing. Normally this type of issue would spoil my enjoyment, but the plot and the constant action allowed me to put this behind me.
It's an all-action thriller which involves Eva and her small team chasing and being chased by the perpetrators across the USA. There is a twist at the end which was easy to see coming which again didn't spoil the pleasure of reading such a well-put-together and stimulating novel. In the end, you find yourself asking who does pull the strings?
I haven't previously read anything by Alan McDermott but will be looking out for any other of his publications.

Breakaway Reviewers received a copy of the book to review
Run and Hide presents a troop of characters who quickly get to grips with providing solutions to any conceivable problem. The unrelenting scheming keeps pace with the rate Eva Driscoll dispatches these problems, which is carried out with stealth and efficiency.
Eva is just one of the many pawns in a mammoth game of political chess, but now she has a personal quest: to obtain answers and ultimately justice for her murdered brother. People will be held accountable – whoever they are, whatever their position, and at any cost. Even those pulling the strings at the highest level who ironically display the lowest regard for everyone else.
The hazards are plentiful, the feats impressive, the group dynamic.... maybe not so much. Although Eva’s unfaltering and effective kick-ass attitude meets every challenge head on, the crowd of people that builds around her immediate circle and beyond grows considerably preventing me from getting to know anyone else in any great detail, and consequently believing in them.
Probably best to just sit back and enjoy the ride with this one. But expect a steadily rising body count and no mercy.
***Overall rating: 3.5 / 5***
(My thanks to the publisher for providing a copy of this title via Netgalley, which I voluntarily chose to read and review.)
Book Review: Run and Hide (Eva Driscoll #1) by Alan McDermott
Conspiracy theory galore. Strong female lead character.
This is not a book which will cause you to fear the end of the world as we know it or have you think hard of who really runs the government or compel you to reach out for answers in the depths of your soul.
But it a great book if you enjoy intense, non-stop action, fast-paced political thrillers: - bullet-proof protagonists using spycraft, brute force and super-hacker technology against rich, powerful antagonists with an inexhaustive supply of minions cum government agents.
The odds are overwhelming. Will the ex-CIA assassin who suddenly finds herself in the cross-hairs and is bent to avenge her murdered brother, along with her formidable rogue band of brothers seemingly patched together by fate, outsmart shadowy billionaire conspirators acronymed ESO, puppet masters and the "real power" behind the presidency.
Not entirely an original theme, but quite a story. Predictable, even preposterous plot, but craftily written. I'd read the author again and understand he has a popular and highly-rated series of "Tom Gray" novels.
Review based on an advance reading copy presented by NetGalley and Amazon Publishing U.K. and Thomas & Mercer.

The clock is ticking. They can’t run forever. It’s time to make a choice: kill or be killed…
This is a fast paced political thriller. Eva is a badass who is going to take down the one club in the US who has all the power and money. In fact they are in charge of White House, judges, police, media, etc. As she makes a team of her own then the Club is also ready to tke her down and willing to kill innocent bystanders to get her.
I received this from NetGalley for an honest review.
This book has a good pacing. Not too much repetition and not to much dragging it out. The main character Eva Driscoll, a former CIA agent. There were several other active characters - all men, who were good guys, and then several layers of "bad" guys. Eva is one of those super strong and super smart females who give the impression of a super-hero. The storyline is interesting and complex enough to keep interest, but not so overblown as to become confusing - at least, I didn't think so. I don't like profanity in a book and there were a bit over a dozen f-words, which just seemed thrown in, but I can deal with that and overlook them when it's so few. There's government conspiracy involved, as is a popular subject, and super evil bad guys, along with flawed good guys. It ended with a good enough ending so that it could be standalone, but indicated that a book 2 would continue the story.
This story takes off on the very first page and doesn't slow down.
We become invested and intrigued by Rees Colback and Eva Driscoll's problem in the very first chapter. We are compelled to keep following them as they build their team to try to fight the ESO. Not an easy task when literally every government agency is tainted by ESO money.
It is interesting to see how the small team tries to circumvent all of the obstacles that are thrown in their path.
This is a fast paced thriller. I enjoyed reading this and look forward to the other Eva Driscoll books that are to follow.
If you are in the market for a thriller, give this one a try. I don't think you will be disappointed.
Run and Hide... My book review. This book certainly sets a breakneck pace, as you are thrown into the action straight away... Ex - CIA operative Eva Driscoll is investigating her brothers suicide and to this end she enlists the help of Rees Colback who served in the same special forces unit as her brother... A shadowy global organisation will stop at nothing to cover up an op that went bad... With unlimited forces and resources against them Eva and Rees are soon on the run from every agency out there.... If they are going to go from hunted to hunters they are going to need help. This is a conspiracy theory lovers dream as a cabal with fingers in nearly every government and media outlet across the world pull strings that you would like to think is impossible outside of a good book.... Not that they haven't met their match.... As Eva is a one woman killing machine, able to pretty much out think, out fight and out maneuver all comers... With the arrival of a few familiar faces ( to readers of the Grey books) the scene is set for a showdown of epic proportions...
Another great read. A political thriller filled with action and a cast of characters the reader will want to follow in the future. The villains are BIG Money and are secretly running the country. Our heroine is a former CIA agent/assassin who is looking for the people responsible for her brother’s death. She links up with a former member of Special Forces who is also on the kill list and who was her brother’s friend. The interaction between them and the few others they bring into their group is grabbing and will keep any reader up late. Thanks to Net Galley and Thomas and Mercer for an ARC for an honest review.

The clock is ticking. They can’t run forever. It’s time to make a choice: kill or be killed…
And so begins a fast paced thriller that kept me enthralled to the end. I really enjoyed Eva and the cast of characters that help her along the way. She was a very strong, smart character who was able to save herself and others. Colback, Smart, Sonny and Farooq made a fabulous team with Huff added in as a wildcard. The story line was very well written and feasible to make it seemed ripped from the headlines.
I want to thank NetGalley for the chance to read this free copy and to share my opinions.
Wow oh wow! This was the first action-packed-thriller book I’ve read. I absolutely loved the writing style, attention to detail, and character development throughout this novel. I highly recommend this read.
I absolutely loved the story line, the twists and turns, and of course - the ending.. Just like watching action movies, I startled my husband while reading the end of the novel. :)
