But he surprises me at every turn.
Fights ruthlessly to protect me, even if I don’t deserve it.

Leaving a dangerous man in his place.

A former mercenary and a mafia princess.
Oh, what a fitting pair we make.

Darkness holds both of us, but I lean into it.

R A T I N G: 3 stars to Blood Sky ★ ★ ★

“Tell me this, Jackson. Why do you care? Why didn’t you drop me off on the side of the road and get away from this mess?” I grab his jaw. “I’m a hurricane. Death follows me everywhere.” His gaze flickers over my face, from my eyes to my nose, lingering on my lips. “That’s what I like about you,” he breathes.

‘Such a valiant hero, trying to protect me from all of the evil, ugly things in the world. If only life worked like that. If only girls like me could be saved by men like him.’

It's not every day that I enjoy a dark romance because this style of romance has to meet a delicate - tolerable - balance of ingredients to satisfy my needs. The content can either flirt with too much unredeemable darkness or completely toy with lines of offense and villainy by falling into that permissive well of gray where anything goes. It’s one of those branches of romance that makes me feel antsy and mistrustful. The reads are sometimes TOO gritty, morbid or unforgiving for my palate. You can get all sorts of characters with irredeemable, darker tendencies and controversial content, some of which can include rape, non-consent and typically male protagonists too abrasive, toxic and unfeeling to ever claim ‘hero’status. I think it's fair to say that I lean towards the more forgiving variety of dark romance.

What I like about Blood Sky is that though we have some darker themes riding a darker atmosphere, it’s completely palatable without being oppressively dark because we’ve got characters wanting penance as well as punishment. The intrigue pushes at the curiosity and the curiosity bounces off of the intrigue. I don’t at all mind ropes of blood, violence, secrets, betrayal and retribution running through my reads. That’s a big yes please for me. Those are the types of themes you’re bound to get with a mafia book and you’ll get them with Blood Sky too.

It has some of the darkness you can expect from traditional mafia/revenge stories (even though we’re on the outside looking in), and while that might sound appealing, what I found with Blood Sky is it reads well and is easy to get into but it’s not effusively clear with direction/execution. Adrenaline-infused stories with action and tension really hit the spot. The intensity can be heart-pumping addictive. The fast-paced intrigue has an edges of suspense but Blood Sky does underperform in areas and, in parts, it was like following someone in the dark.

Delia Moretti is daughter to the Moretti crime family - an old mafia empire. She’s on the run after her family were butchered in cold blood and left before the dust even settled. A slight she has every intention of repaying. She’s being hunted but she’s got vengeance on the mind. It’s when she’s two weeks into escape that she meets ex-mercenary Jackson Skye, nicknamed 'Blood Skye' in his days of service for a hot temper that painted his vision crimson with blood.

They both know the other has secrets, both outfitted by demons and darkness but it’s the way Jackson is on the road to redemption and Delia is on a road to revenge that puts them part. They want each other, but they want other things more. No matter what, the course is set in stone.

Delia: For me, Delia’s characterisation is perplexing and I was always trying to find pigeonhole my feelings for her. I didn’t know how to pair the different sides of her. She has a strange transformation from appearing vulnerable with something to hide to then coming out as the bloodhound with a plan she was all along, to then not having the blindest idea of what she’s doing. Her written character isn’t clear cut. She’s misleading. I went with it because I thought we’d really start to see the lengths this dangerous mafia princess would go to. Well…she didn’t go very far.

Her identity is tied up in her wanting to retaliate and take blood for blood, recounting the hard lessons she’s learned, but here’s the thing? Though she’s been groomed by a cold mafia lord, has shadowed the mafia business, admitting that she loves the power and fear, is thirsty to lead a life of crime? She leads you to believe she’s going to kick some enemy hide, let’s you see the ruthlessness in her but then settles for stale peanuts.

Delia is a woman who spends so much time planning… with no real plan. That’s why the second half was a disappointing run. Everything kind of hurries into its own order. Delia had ample opportunity to work a plan but spent weeks wasting it away. I really wasn’t sure what to make of her, I barely felt like I knew her and I think that’s down to a lack of character clarity and framework. How can/does she accept a life out of crime? How did she deal with the aftermath..I’m really not sure.

Jackson: Jackson’s in a bit of a morality crisis. He’s part of an ex mercenary group who want penance for all the blood they spilled in the name of war. He’s haunted by a life of war zones, taking lives and spraying bullets and Delia ropes him right back into the violence he was strict on leaving behind. But he can’t stop himself from following her. She reminds him of who was before he chose a civilised life. That change in lifestyle had him cut off contact with his fellow brothers-in-arms.

Jackson has his own part in this story; his involvement with Delia, running from what he left behind and dealing with the guilty consequences, which yep, include the five men he abandoned. His whispered-about cadre made me care and I looked forward to every scene they were in. I did like Jackson’s role in the, and though he’s out of the black ops business, i wanted to see more than just his angst and frustration. He’s protective and vulnerable when the situation calls for it but as with Delia, I didn’t know him apart from his desires and motivations. He was a bit underwhelming as a character. Still, he was easier to read and make sense of as opposed to Delia.

Blood Sky has entertaining elements as a dark contemporary romance. I think it’s a good series starter to the Broken Mercenaries series. I had a curious interest that saw me through to the end and I absolutely credit the author for the effort. I really like the mercenary crew, they’ve all got individual stripes and though I’ve not read their stories (they’re yet to follow), they’ve left behind a taste. The plot had desirable elements but the execution, in parts, abandons that desire. On the surface this looks intense and steamy. It is intense but definitely doesn’t follow up on the steam factor. Overall, the flow is more on the rugged side and I wasn’t overtly emotionally involved or connected with the protagonists even if I was curious. While the main leads have chemistry, their connection is evasive. Still, I think this is a great fit for fans who like their dark romance not too dark.

S O M E _T H O U G H T S…

1) Jackson and Delia have good chemistry to begin with but their relationship isn’t satisfyingly-paced and their liaison isn’t of the fleshed out variety. Their sexual relationship is whiplash fast - the first sex scene explodes out of nowhere and very much emulates the sort of wham bam, thank you ma'am bedroom scenes (not fun to read, too fast and every bout of sex thereafter is unprotected despite not knowing each other). The lighter, subtly telling moments between them were my favourite because it exposes the vulnerability, but those moments are hard to trust. You either unite with characters or thank them for their time and leave. I really do hate to say it, but this is more of the latter.

2) Parts of the plot are also implausible. I find it hard to believe that a Mafia boss would give turn himself into the police. That’s not really how organised crime leaders operate. Granted, I don’t know much about Jorge Castillo, but that doesn’t seem like choice he’d willingly indulge, and the business with the betrayal of the Moretti clan made me blink twice and think too hard about where the author was going with this. They’re supposed to be a crime family but seem to fumble without the leading men in the family. I know it’s a case of you split a seam and a cloth unravels but the mafia are supposed to be the picture of ruthlessness, but nobody carried that edge, except for baddie James.

3) The scene direction and the reading can be confusing. There were moments were I intermittently had to re-read several passages to make sure I wasn’t misreading. For me, it comes down to a lack of structure and coherence.

4) I'm really not a fan of bringing the potential idea of a baby into a book when the characters aren't close or connected enough to be in a healthy position to have a baby.

5)

C O N T E N T_W A R N I N G: Blood, violence, profanity, sex scenes. Mentions drugs, human trafficking, alcohol addiction, PTSD, miscarriage.

Explosive action and sizzling chemistry from page one!

What a talented writer this new-to-the-scene author is! That was one of my first thoughts as I read Blood Sky. Sara Massery certainly has a big future ahead of her.

I was hooked from the first page, and completely drawn into the dark secrets of Delia and Jackson’s world’s. If you love a side of action and mafia style suspense with your romance, this is one series you’ll want to start today!

4.5 explosive stars!!! “I’m a hurricane,” I whisper. “Death follows me everywhere.”
His eyes flicker over my face, from my eyes to my nose, lingering on my lips. “That’s what I like about you,” he breathes.

My introduction to S. Massery’s books started off with a bang with Blood Sky! Nonstop action from the first to the very last page! I loved the author’s writing and her different spin on the mafia genre. Delia’s family has been killed by the enemy and this is her story of revenge. She meets Jackson, a man with his own past and his buddies who are all underground mercenaries. I absolutely loved the banter with all of the guys!!

The story became a bit far fetched for me at one point, but overall this was a thrilling read from beginning to the jaw dropping end! I cannot wait for the next spinoff in this series. So ready for Angel of Death!!!

Hold onto your hats, this was an intense and wild ride.

I love when a book starts with action and this one delivered. It also kept up with that momentum throughout the whole book. Jackson and Delia, two unlikely characters, two totally different backgrounds, both a little rough around the edges and completely bada$$.

Delia was escaping or trying to anyway. She's been running for weeks and at every turn, trouble follows. Although this time the unexpected trouble is in the form of an evacuation because of fires. Jackson turns up to help with the evacuation and when expecting a squatter, he finds a scared but firey Delia.

That is just the beginning of the action and it only grows from there. Delia is a mafia princess, Jackson is ex-military turned first-responder. Not even close to being a likely pair. One is trying to be good. The othe trying to stay alive. Together they find more trouble, secrets, guns and a whole lot of bloodshed. This was also an introduction to bad of military misfits that all specialize in something. Jackson has let his friendships fall to wayside over the past number of years but when the band gets back together, things blow up and personalities shine.

Delia is a tough cookie and smart. While she has made some crucial mistakes since she fled her home, she puts all the pieces together and her drive for vengeance is strong. Not knowing who to trust and who is behind the war has her trusting some of the wrong people.

This book was super fast-paced, but there were a few times I felt rushed. There was also a lot packed into these pages. We weer introduced to a whole cast of characters and there was a bit going on with the stars of this book. I am really looking forward to more of this series though. I like the adrenaline rush and these boys sound like they are going to be a great time.

Blood Sky by S. Massery was just what I was looking for.

I love the way Massery weaves this storyline and characters all together, leaving you wondering what’s going to happen next, and still having moments that completely surprise you.

Delia is one tough lady! I love her character. And Jackson is definitely one man who can help her face what’s coming after her.

Blood Sky reminds us all that sometimes friends are more than family.

This book was so great right from the first page! I was never bored and it was very easy to follow the characters POV. I haven't read many (only one other) mafia themed book so this was slightly foreign to me but I really loved it. I liked that the story line was completed at the end but their was also a cliffhanger to the next book, which I want right now! I live Delia but Jackson, swoon! Read this book as soon as it's released and all of S. Massey's other books, they are so awesome!

This was book 1 in the "Broken Mercenaries" series and my first time reading this author. Jackson Skye helps a firefighter looking for occupants when he is jump on by small sexy woman. Turns out someone is trying to kill her he is a natural alpha male and his protective instincts kick in and he will do anything to protect her. This was a really good read and I liked Delia who is a mafia princess. Delia is smart and feisty and she was determined to get to the bottom of what was going on and with the help of Jackson's buddies they do just that. These two had some hot sexy chemistry. This book had a lot of action in it. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Oh my dayz. What a story! I literally sat and inhaled this story. I loved every minute of it.

Jackson and Delia. Crikey what a pair. They sure did put me through the wringer as I didn’t know what way the story was going to go.

Fantastic secondary characters who I’m really hoping they all get their own stories as those men are hot!

I love that the story is told through two points of view as I really wanted to get into both their heads.

That ending. Yikes. I’m so looking forward to reading more. Hopefully we won’t be waiting too long.

ARC was generously provided for an honest review.

This is the first book I am reading of S Massery and I have to say this What a book It was! I got goosebumps while reading this book and I was so hooked up That I read this book within One day. I read a good Action book after a long time and Amazing work done by the author and I am genuinely Honoured that I am reviewing this book.

The story is about a girl named Delia, who is trying to save herself from the People who are trying to kill her. They even killed her family in front of her eyes. She is the one and only daughter of the mafia Leader who was Murdered brutally. When Jackson met Delia there was a fire all around the corner and being a fireman he has to make sure there is no one left behind in the house, and then he met the Hurricane of his life, which completely changed his life.

Or maybe not? He can easily leave her around the corner of the road after saving her from the fire but he didn't because he missed this thriller in his life. He missed this action. Yes, before working in the wildfires, he worked in the company of Military contractors who deploys their units or you can say people overseas. He knows exactly how these things work.

Though Delia met the right person she still has to find out who was the mastermind behind the massacre of her family and what is the reason behind it. She still wasn't able to find the reason who is getting the benefit from all this. She still needs to find the answers to these questions and maybe Jackson is the only one who could help her to find reach the ultimate goal of her.

The story, the plot is great and I believe that besides the main characters if the side Characters are not able to give the major impact in the book then the book doesn't remain that interesting. This book has a lot of side characters who have my heart. All the friends of the Jackson- Dalton, Griffin, Mason, Zach, I just loved them. The overall character development is of Jackson and Delia is also really good.

One more thing which I wanted to Put the light is that WHAT A CLIMAX it was!!! Oh My GOD! Just loved it!! Well, I am a huge sucker of action books and I have to tell you This book has a REALLY AWESOME ACTION since from the start. The author had done the AMAZING job with this book.

If you are a fan of Action, mafia romance book and a heartbreaking Climax this book is perfect for you.

This is the first in a series for this author. I was very impressed with the writing of this new to me author. The story was full of action and suspense with some hot steamy moments thrown in.

Delia and Jackson meet by chance and become ties together because of the danger that is following Delia. This book happens to center on Delia's mafia roots but the series looks like it will be following Jackson's mercenary friends. I can't wait for more of them. Dalton, Griffen, Zach and Mason are each characters worth knowing. Loved the dynamic of their team. The live of brotherhood they share. And the no questions asked "I have your back" attitudes.

Jackson and Delia have some dark history and there is violence involved with both of them. I liked how the story resolved. I look forward to catching up with them in the next books.

Great start to the series!

I don't even know where to start with this review. Blood Sky was everything I didn't know I needed and more. It was nonstop action from the first page to the last and is so different from all the other books out there.

Delia is without a doubt one of the strongest female characters I have read. To survive what she did - even though she had help along the way - is still pretty amazing.

And Jackson, I just love him. He's so strong, smart, and intuitive. I know he learned a lot from his time in the military and Scorpion Industry, but in my opinion, you either have those skills or you don't and the military and SI just draw them out and hone them. And boy did they ever come in handy while helping Delia.

I enjoyed meeting each of Jackson's friends with their unique talents and personalities. And I'll be counting down the days until the next book releases because that ending is going to be on my mind for months.

S. Massery was a new to me author before this, but I will definitely be reading her other books and anxiously waiting for the next book in this series. If you love action packed romantic suspense, I highly recommend this book.

The beginning was a page turner and the end was action packed.
I liked the h -Delia. She is strong with a mafia background and she leans on the H when needed.
I didn’t connect as much with the H -Jackson.
Jackson has a group of “brothers” that he met while working for a black ops group. I believe each may have their own book and I may connect with those characters more. Look forward to the next.

This is the first book in the Broken Mercenaries series and I would guess that there will be at least 5 books (maybe 6) in the series each featuring one of the guys introduced in this book. I was drawn in from the start and the fast-paced action and suspense elements kept me turning the pages.

Delia and Jackson meet by chance when her home is in the path of a wildfire. He gets her out, but it turns out that she has more problems than just mother nature on her heals. To keep her safe, he takes her to meet his mercenary friends who are able to help her get to the bottom of the mafia issues she has. Actually she does most of the work herself and she proves that she is a force to be reckoned with. I truly enjoyed every minute of this story and can’t wait to see how each of these stories plays out.

Although the story of Delia and Jackson is resolved in this book, there are definitely unresolved elements happening with the rest of Jackson’s team.

Hero (Jackson) 5 | Heroine (Delia) 5 | Plot 4 | Writing Style 4 | Steam 4 | Romance 4 | Angst-Suspense 5 | Darkness 4 | Humor 1 | Secondary Characters 5 | Drama-Conflict 4 | Mystery 5 | Twists 5 | Action 5 | Pacing Steady | Dual POV | MF | Steamy | Mafia | Part of a series | Overall 4.5 Stars

Delia Moretti has come to her family’s old house in hopes of escaping those who murdered her family. Yet a forest fire interrupts her plans and now she must put her life in the hands of a stranger who gets her away from the fire.
Jackson Skye is working and evacuating people in the line of the fire when he stumbles upon a girl who puts up quite the fight leaving her house. She is worried about leaving but Jackson has no idea how much trouble she is in until a night at the motel and he realizes there is more to her than meets the eye.
As Jackson vows to keep Delia safe from whomever is after her, he knows he can’t do it alone and calls on the men who used to work with him at Scorpion Industries.
As both Delia and Jackson try to figure out who is behind the attacks on Delia they both need to deal with their feelings with one another and get over the past which is holding them both back.
This was such a good book and I can’t wait for more in this series!!
Delia is running from whomever killed her family yet at the same time she can’t figure out how she is always found so quickly. She is determined to bring down those who killed her family and take her rightful place leading the family in Las Vegas.
Jackson was once part of the Army and part of a secret group called Scorpion Industries that was brought into difficult situations but he has kept his distance the past few years when the group lost one of their own and he struggled with dealing with the loss. Yet he knows that they are the only people he can count on to find out who is after Delia and how they can be taken care of.
There was so much chemistry between Delia and Jackson and you could tell they were two wounded individuals who could either heal each other or be the downfall of the other.
I loved learning about “Blood Sky” and how that showed Delia what Jackson was really capable of. It was interesting to see that side of him and I knew I was happy that Delia had him. Yet that night brought a change as it brought Delia back into the fold and we were just waiting to see whose side everyone was on. The accident brought another mystery into the fold and I really hope Jackson was right.
Las Vegas brought out a few twists and turns that I was and wasn’t expecting. There were some things I wasn’t surprised about but other things definitely shocked me as the book went on. The warehouse was full of action and so many things I wasn’t counting on! The end of that incident left me very sad though.
The very end brought hope and I am so happy that I was right earlier on and I can’t wait for more in this series!

I really liked this book! It was definitely a refreshing take on the normal Mafia reads in which the person in the Mafia is our leading lady is she is the freaking boss and the guy is outside of the life and no ties with her or them. It was engaging and captivating from the characters to the story line and I highly recommend checking it out!

Delia knows that her life is unconditional, being that she is the heir the mafia has shown her that. After on the run, she meets Jackson who helps her out of a tough situation, which is interesting because Delia is not a shrinking violet, this girl is the definition of tough, but it just goes to show sometimes it is nice to lean on someone. She was not expecting Jackson, sweet but broody Jackson that likes to help people but also has a dark side as well.

All in all, this book was completely FAB! I am a huge fan of it and liked how things were a bit unconditional. Loved the characters (ALL OF THEM, I cannot wait to see where it goes from here), story line, and how everything moved fluidly!

Thanks to S Massery and Give Me Books PR for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly!

Born and raised in a mafia family Delia is aware of the violence that comes with it but she didn’t expect the cost to be her entire family. She is not about to be derailed from her need for vengeance, but she never expected a fire and a sexy firefighter to become her ally.

Jackson has tried to distance himself from his career as a mercenary but all it would take is Delia needing his help and he doesn’t hesitate to contact the people who will help him keep Delia safe while they find the answers to put an end to the threat once and for all.

Delia’s fierce personality is exactly the challenge that Jackson has been missing and the chemistry between them was electric. When you add the suspense element as well as the intriguing cast of secondary characters you are in for quite a ride.

Delia was on the run, grieving, and was desperately trying to survive. When ex-military Firefighter Jackson found her attached to his back with a knife to his neck as he searched an abandoned house, it was the kick start to a fast and furious flight together.
This well written contemporary mafia based romance had all the elements of a great story.
Handsome hulky alpha male fighter, check. Damsel in distress with mafia ties and secrets, check. Chemistry and Passion, check, check, check.
All that along with a storyline that was filled with intrigue, suspense, betrayal and action. One great read!

Action packed and full of twists, it's been quite a while since I fell so completely into an action-romance.

This was my first S. Massery book and I gotta say, I usually shy away from Mafia books, they aren't my favorite trope but this book has me hooked!
S. Massery manages to weave a story that kept mt on my toes - wondering and speculating what’s going to happen next, and still somehow completely surprise me at every turn.

I'm officially a fan and am so happy to be moving straight on to Angel of Death.

5 stars and a coop.

I was completely hooked on this story within reading the first few pages! It’s a well written, quick-paced ride full of action and adventure with plenty of suspense, danger, conflict, violence, intrigue and treachery. It’s also a very compelling tale featuring engaging characters with deep, dark secrets. I loved Delia’s character! She’s outwardly cool, calculating, fierce, sassy, determined, and resourceful. Her mafia Daddy sure taught her well! Jackson is no slouch either in the badass department. He’s a conflicted man however, trying to atone for his deadly past. I enjoyed their fiery chemistry, flirty banter and seriously steamy encounters. I adored Jackson’s tight-knit brotherhood of friends. Those are some seriously dangerous, deadly, dedicated dudes and I look forward to their stories as this series unfolds.

This story had me hooked since chapter 1 and did not stop till the end.
I loved the way Delia was so strong and probably one of the strongest female characters I've read.
Jackson and Delia have a really big connection and they have each others back.
I really enjoyed all the other characters that I cannot wait to hear from again.
This is my 1st read from this author and it will definitely not be the last. I cannot wait on Griffin's - Angel of death story.

Strong heroine

I enjoyed this book from start to finish I was on the edge of my seat. I liked all of the characters and I think the guys are all getting their own stories. I loved that the heroine was a force to be reckoned with on her own. I would have liked more on Jackson but I still enjoyed this book.

Parts of this story I really liked but others I struggled with. The storyline wasn't as fluid as I am used to from this author. Those parts pulled me out of the story which was too bad because when it was good then it was GOOD.

The ending has my interest piqued though so I will most likely continue on with this series of interconnected standalones.

The plot was good at times and then not at others?? But I was entertained and that’s what matters

I’m trying to think of all the books I’ve read that I’ve never read a mafia one until now.....with a twist....the heroine is the bada^^!

Jackson and Delia had some amazing chemistry and the story kept my attention. Okay....moving on to Angel of Death.....
