After putting his serial killer brother in prison, former US marshal Mitch Whitehorse chooses a solitary country life—until his brother escapes. Now Mitch’s former sister-in-law, Jane Reyes, needs protection…for herself and the toddler she’s kept a secret. Mitch still isn’t sure of Jane’s innocence in his brother’s crimes, but to keep his nephew out of a killer’s grasp, trusting her is his only option.

I’ve really enjoyed Dana Mentink’s cowboy stories, so of course, I had to pick up Danger on the Ranch, the start to her new Roughwater Ranch Cowboys series. And boy, am I glad I did.
Mitch Whitehouse has lived a quiet life since putting his serial killer brother in prison. However, when he escapes, Mitch has no choice but to protect his former sister-in-law and nephew. Then, an adventure full of action, suspense, romance, and faith… The story offers a little bit of everything, making it quite exciting and compelling.
If you enjoyed contemporary romantic suspense, definitely check out Danger on the Ranch. A quick read, it does not disappoint.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.
Good story that captures interest from pg 1, except with this one I found the players predictable. The issue of “trust” preached and centered upon in the story, was unbalanced from the female protagonist's point of view- she was too easily trusting in areas that shouldn’t have been, and too easily NOT trusting in areas that she shouldn’t have been. A see-saw effect, and at certain times it felt that the main female protagonist was a bit hypocritical. That factor lead in a slight irritation as story progressed to climax.
Still found the overall storyline a very worthy read, and Mentink continues to be one of my favorite authors in this genre. This one was just a "blip", and I'll continue reading anything Mentink.
'He's not my God, and frankly, I can't understand how He can be yours, after what's happened to you.'
Dana Mentink kicks off a new series, Roughwater Ranch Cowboys, with this novel and this one is anything to go by, it's going to be great! Mitch Whitehorse retires from the US Marshals after his vile brother is sentenced to life in prison for capturing and killing women, a true serial killer. There is nothing good in this man. Then his brother escapes and comes gunning for Mitch. And the woman he was married to when he was killing women. Only she had no idea what he was doing. Now Jane also shows up, to warn Mitch, she says, but he doesn't believe her. How could she have been married to his brother and not known he was such a vile and heinous criminal? But now she's got a toddler with her, one she has kept secret. And they need protection. Can Mitch truly look past his brother's offenses and keep this woman and her son safe? Even if he doesn't believe her story?
This book started off with a bang and kept going throughout. I love Dana's suspense novels and she outdoes herself with this one. Truly. The bad guy in this one is truly a vicious person and she explores the thought that how can God love someone this cruel? A wonderful novel with a great spiritual theme. And Mentink introduces us to the people that will be featured in the upcoming series and I am really looking forward to them each having their own book! Well done!
*My thanks to the author for a preview copy of this book. All opinions stated here are entirely my own.
I’m excited about this new series titled Roughwater Ranch Cowboys! The author definitely got the series off to a unique and exciting start with Danger on the Ranch. The story was compelling, with the main characters having close ties with a serial killer.
Mitch was Wade’s brother and Jane was Wade’s ex-wife. Wade was simply terrifying in his determination to make Mitch pay for bringing him to justice. He was also determined to control Jane as his own once again. Add in the terror of knowing that Jane was hiding the fact that she bore his son and it ramped up the tense situation.
Mitch began the story with real hatred toward Jane, as he thought she must have had knowledge of Wade’s killings. It was interesting to watch as he began to understand that Jane was not aware of what Wade had been doing. Mitch had quite the faith journey to undertake in this novel, and he and Jane continually dealt with the repurcussions of their connections to Wade. This was a very unique story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
If you enjoy a story with non-stop action, this one will not disappoint, and we won’t know until the last page is turned who survived. There is also the unknown in that we don’t know who to trust, and even then, I found myself changing my opinion, yes, the author really keeps us guessing. Where one brother seems to care of people and is there for his fellow man, the other is the personification of evil. You don’t want to miss this one, it sure will keep you guessing!
I received this book through Celebrate Lit, and was not required to give a positive review.
Wow...much darker subject matter than I'm used to seeing in a Love Inspired Suspense. Mentink does a great job of building up the creep factor without going overboard but it still gave me stalkerish heebie-jeebies. Sometimes a reader needs a good shivery book to cower into. :-) And this one fits the bill!
It starts out really tense. Mitch's...almost repulsion...for Jane oozes off the page. That knee-jerk reaction clashes with his sense of decency and honor though. Talk about internal conflict! And as much as I felt for him, I grew exasperated with him too. Poor Jane needed a break and Mitch wasn't about to give her one. Of course, I had the benefit of being party to Jane's innermost thoughts so I knew she was innocent. Mitch, on the other hand, had to s-l-o-w-l-y work that out for himself. But when he does -- wow!
Intense action, dark foreshadowing, and a seriously evil villain make Danger on the Ranch a page-turning thriller. And -- woohoo! -- this is the first book in the Roughwater Ranch Cowboys series and I'm already clamoring for Liam, Chad and Helen's stories (especially Liam's!!!)
A new series by Dana and what a book. Its a book filled with emotions. I loved meeting Mitch Whitehouse who had lost so much because of a brother who was so dark. Meeting Jane Reyes gives you an idea of an innocent caught in the middle. The book is well written and it draws you into the story. You get to "see" people who have tried to rebuild there lives after a horrible crime. But the story draws you into the suspense of trying to capture the bad guy, but also trying to let go. Its a beautifully written book that will have you sad to begin with but cheering at the end. It introduces you to a family of people who love each other by choice. I love meeting each of the characters and look forward to the stories ahead. This was a powerful story and I look forward to the ones ahead.
Still out of breath from that thrill ride! I finished this action-packed novel in one sitting because I could not put it down! Danger on the Ranch is the first installment in a new series by Dana Mentink. This book has it all...nail-biting suspense, good versus evil, unexpected relationships, etc! Can't wait to read the others!
I was given a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review!
Also known as Wherein Dana Mentink Remains in my Top Three LIS Authors....
I enjoyed every minute of this thriller-mystery with a madman ready to wreck the lives of our dear MCs. This is a "good guy meets villain's ex" story but he's also the bad guy's brother and a government agent to boot.
I think my favorite scene was the kitten rescue...
DANGER ON THE RANCH is one the better Love Inspired Suspense books I've read recently. Wade Whitehorse is out to kill. He hates his brother, Mitch, and Mitch must die.
Mitch is half-blind from his brother's first attempt on his life and he didn't even know his brother had escaped from prison until he finds his boat moved and someone starts shooting at him. Jane saves his life but Mitch believes she is just as guilty as Wade so he doesn't trust her but yet he must rely on her if he wants to stay alive.
Jane never knew her ex-husband was a serial killer until his arrest. She never told him she was pregnant and she knows Wade will kill her and take their child. Mitch is the only one she trusts to get Wade back behind bars. She has anger issues, is overly defensive, and wow, the baggage both of these characters carry.
DANGER ON THE RANCH starts with action that doesn't let up until the end. If you like romantic suspense you will love this book. Or at least be totally engrossed.
You’re not two pages in before Mitch is getting shot at … by his recently-escaped, truly evil, serial killer brother Wade … and courageously rescued by his serial killer brother’s ex-wife Jane, whom Mitch loathes based on his suspicions that she was his brother’s accomplice in the serial killing. Whew! That’s all in the first few pages – and it only gets more intense from there!
The tension that Mentink has meted out to perfection builds not only from the immediate threat to their lives, but also from all the emotions behind that threat. Guilt, desperation, fear, distrust, doubt, anger… and yes attraction to the last person on earth you think you should fall for – it’s all bundled into an adrenaline fueled thriller that will keep you on the edge of your favorite reading chair. Add in an adorable toddler who kicks up the tension even further with the urgent need to keep him safe (and the swoony way tough cowboy Mitch turns into a besotted puddle as Uncle Moo Moo) …. yeah, don’t plan to relax at all while you’re reading this book. By the time the story races to the finish line, you’ll have accumulated a handful of people whose ability to be trusted is seriously suspect. Y’all. It’s so good!
And of course, there’s the romance… Mitch and Jane both have their hearts as locked down as Fort Knox when it comes to the other person, and watching those same hearts begin to soften into affection with a cowboy-induced sizzle is truly swoonilicious. Their characters are layered in their backstories as well as their present situations, and you’ll find yourself nearly breathless at times as they dance around both their simmering mutual attraction and deeply ingrained distrust of each other. Once this kind of romance really takes off, be prepared for some keep-that-fan-handy fireworks!
Bottom Line: This. Book. Is. Amazing. Action-packed and intense, the story also eases at just the right moments for a sweet or humorous scene – just long enough for you to catch your breath before you’re dodging creepiest-Mentink-villain-ever guy with our protagonists all over again! Along the way you also get to meet a variety of secondary characters that promise great stories of their own as the series continues, and you’re reminded that, no matter your past or your family tree, God can never be taken from you; He is personal to each of us, and He is able to redeem what we think is lost. A must-read for thriller fans who love a good romance thrown in, too!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
Over the past year Dana Mentink has become one of my favorite romantic suspense authors! I love her writing style, so as soon as I saw she had a new book coming out I knew I had to read it, so before I even read the description I immediately requested a review copy, and after I read the description I knew for sure that this was a book I would really enjoy! And I most definitely did! I love books set on ranches and this one features the Roughwater Ranch which is set right alongside the California coastline. This is the first time that I know of that I have read about a ranch set next to the ocean, and I found it very unique and fascinating to read about! I loved these characters, Mitch and Jane were both such brave and strong individuals and from the very start of the book I was cheering for them to find safety and love together! And little Ben was adorable. I have to say I was surprised by who Wade's helper turned out to be, I totally never guessed that person was aiding him, and I read a lot of suspense books so surprising me with something like that is very hard to do, brava Dana Mentink! The suspense in this book was so good, it was pretty much nonstop, but there was also a great balance between suspense, romance, and character development! There were a couple of times I got a little annoyed with Jane's independence and felt like she was veering a little too far toward recklessness, but at the same time I understood her not wanting to drag other people into her troubles. I loved the whole Roughwater Ranch cast of characters! Aunt Ginny and Uncle Gus were great, as were Liam, Helen, and Chad! I am super intrigued and excited to read all of their stories, but I'm hoping that Liam's will be next! Overall, even though this one didn't quite become a favorite of mine I really enjoyed reading it and am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series! (4 Stars!)
I received an ebook copy of this book from the publisher which did not influence my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.
Unpredictable, heart wrenching, suspense filled and chilling, Danger on the Ranch kept me reading until the late night hours! This may be my favorite of all of this author's books. Family connections are strong as they are in her previous books. That strength of family and love for others comes through faith and compassion. When someone has a need there's a support system already in place.
One member of the Whitehorse family is evil to the core, a psychopathic killer who has escaped from prison, putting everyone at risk! It's nearly impossible to know who one can trust, as past events have colored perceptions of several characters throughout this book. Mitch Whitehorse becomes a protector to his brother's ex-wife and young child. He would rather take a bullet than let anything happen to either of them.
I couldn't read fast enough to satisfy my curiosity regarding what could happen next! My heart rate increased as did my breathing, and I rocked my glider chair ever faster as the drama continued to build! I highly recommend this exciting, unpredictable book! It's one I won't soon forget!
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book. All expressed opinions are honest and my own.
A great action-filled start to this new series called Roughwater Ranch Cowboys by Dana Mentink! The author always delivers fast-paced, well-written, adrenaline-filled romantic suspense and she definitely lives up to her reputation with this newest book. Dangers on the Ranch starts out with Mitch, a former US Marshall and a cowboy, squaring off against his younger brother whom he put away in prison for multiple murders. Mitch is a stoic man, loyal and hard-working but also tender. The opening scene also involves his brother’s ex-wife Jane who tries to warn Mitch of his brother’s escape but also seeks help in protecting her son. The rest of the book is a roller coaster ride of action as both are chased by the psychopath of a brother and ex-husband who seeks revenge. In the midst of running for their lives and protecting their loved ones, Mitch and Jane find common ground - in affection, family, and faith.
If you enjoy romantic suspense with page-turning action, you will love this book. I received a copy of the book via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
Danger on the Ranch ( Roughwater Ranch Cowboys-Book #1 ) By: Dana Mentink Danger on the Ranch is book one in Roughwater Ranch Cowboys Series. It is a Love Inspired Suspense Riveting Inspirational Romance. Wow , What a story. I haven’t read anything of Dana Mentink that has not been good. I was not disappointed. Read till in the night trying to finish, did not want to put it down. I was grabbed at the start and was hooked. Love the story and the characters, both was well written and well developed. Mitch was a US Marshal who had to put his serial killer brother in prison. Jane was his sister-in-law who had lost so much for everything. Jane finds she has to go calling on Mitch for protection. Can he help her ? Will he help her? Is she innocent or guilty? This is a story about danger, suspense, forgiveness, and love. The author will keep you guessing till the end. I was given a complimentary copy of this book, but was not told that I had to give a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Dana Mentink has totally outdone herself with this story! The premise is unlike any I’ve read before. I was wondering how she was going to pull it off, but she did. I loved it! In fact, this is my favorite story of hers to date and that is saying something! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dana always starts her stories with a bang and this one was no different! I was sucked in from the first page and I didn’t want to stop reading. Mitch and Jane were both awesome characters! And boy, did they have a lot to overcome in this story! I mean Mitch’s brother is a serial killer and he was married to Jane! And, Wade, the serial killer, has escaped from jail and is out for blood! And, did I mention there’s a toddler involved? 😳 What could go wrong? 😂 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I highly recommend this story and I am so excited to hear that there is going to be four stories in this series! I cannot wait for Liam’s story! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Had me hooked from the very first page. Mitch’s brother escaped from prison. Wade is out to get his ex-wife and his brother. Also Jane is trying to keep her son from Wade.
There seems to be danger everywhere they go. Wade keeps finding them. Who is working with him ?
I really enjoyed the characters. They were so real to me. I could feel their emotions. Especially Jane in protecting her son. The story was very exciting, never a dull moment.
I received an advanced copy of the book from the author through Celebrate Lit. I was not required to write an positive review. This review is my own opinion.
Really a 3.5 but the faith element was handled better than in most of these LIS books. The standard of guy movies plot where something explosive happens frequently is here and I do not like it. The book is short enough without this clutter. Women are main readers here so why is this “guy appeal” so mandated? Suspense does not require a hail of bullets, arson and car crashes. Had to get that rant out. The setup and characters are good but there needs to be more depth. I fear there is no room for it in the prescribed LIS rules.
Suspense, cowboys, horses, a ranch, plus more! All ingredients, in my opinion, for a great book and Author Dana Mentink delivers! Former US Marshal Mitch Whitehorse is responsible for putting his serial killer brother Wade in prison, but Mitch’s quiet, solitary life is upended when his brother escapes from prison. Convinced that his former sister-in-law, Jane Reyes, knew about her husband’s crimes, Mitch does not believe her side of the story until she convinces Mitch that Wade wants to kill him then her. Why if she is innocent? She has a secret and it’s something that Wade will want when he eventually finds out, his son. An edge-of-your-seat adventure that will keep you turning pages. Looking forward to the rest of this series!
This novel is a quick read with lots of suspense. The strength of the novel, I think, is in the many character red herrings. Mentink developed them so that I was wrongly convinced one was aiding the bad guy and another who I thought was certainly an innocent character turned out to be anything but. I would have liked a better developed back story as I felt I had missed a previous novel in this series, even though this is the first one. How a wife could be clueless about her husband kidnapping, holding and killing women on their property needed to have a better foundation to be believable.
This is a quick story with action moving it right along. As is often the case with romantic suspense novels, the romance is so quick it is almost unbelievable. Obstacles to the romance suddenly disappear without a more developed struggle. Romance readers, especially those who love a good contemporary cowboy setting, will enjoy this novel.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.
So, Mitch Whitehorse is a retired US marshal who choose a more solitary life living in a small cabin on the lands of a massive ranch. He choose to retire because of his brother, whom he almost single handedly sent to jail for the kidnapping and torture of three women, with two of those kidnappings resulting in murder. He still bares the scar from his brother trying to kill him too. And he still has a grudge against his brother's wife, who he's convinced knew about the kidnappings and murders. So he's a bit confused when she shows up after his brother escapes custody and take some pot shots at him.
Now ex-wife of Wade Whitehorse, Jane Reyes came to warn Mitch of her ex-husband's escape and intent to murder him. She basically saves Mitch's life but is met with coolness and thinly-veiled hostility. She does this at great personal risk to herself and her son, who she is hiding from his father. Asking Mitch for help now that she's saved him. Well that's her only option, seeing how the cops can't seem to keep her ex husband contained.
So, what do I think? This is a classic love inspired romance suspense...with a twist. Brothers. The good guy and the bad guy are brothers. The ex-husband and the new love interest are brothers. This is quite unique. I've never read such a love inspired anything with this before. And while there's nothing really wrong with it nowadays...it feels off. But I do appreciate a new twist that gets you thinking.
But while the twist is thought provoking, the story is somewhat lacking in comparison. You see, they use Psychopath a multitude of times in this book to descript the brother, Wade. Like most psychopaths turned killer, Wade's described as highly intelligent, thinks of his wife as property, is an expert manipulator and liar, and has little regard for other people if he don't serve his purposes. But I think for someone who is supposed to be so smart, he's not overly so. Sure he doesn't get caught for the majority of the book, but the cops are also idiots.
I don't know. Nothing he did strikes me as overly smart. For example, he wants to kill his brother, so he sets his cabin on fire while he's still inside instead of putting a bullet to him? He doesn't tie him up incase he wakes up? Not very smart for a man who's killed 2 people already. If you want him to suffer, tie him up and THEN set the cabin on fire. Just a thought...
And Jane...Jane didn't bother me overly much. She's a woman trying to do what she thinks is right while trying to protect her son. She does do stupid things. Like going to find Bette, but at least she includes Mitch in her stupid things.
Mitch on the other hand, well he escapes death by merely millimetres on numerous occasions. Right at the bringing, only a few more pages in, a few chapters in. It's a puzzle how Wade fails so many times, really. One time was totally because Wade was an idiot though. I also find it interesting how he goes from basically hating Jane because he's so sure that she's involved (and not warning her previously that his brother was a bad man is also interesting, but I digress) to loving her. All in a matter of days.
That said, the action was...okay. Fair amount of shooting, fires, near misses, etc. Nothing new and exciting for a love inspired suspense. This is, however, another one of those hasty proposal bullcrud stories.
At what level do genes play a part in a person’s makeup? Interesting question, and intriguing aspect for a book. One brother, serial killer. Another brother, a US Marshal. They’ve already been pitted against each other once and the Marshal won.
But now it’s time for round two. Can forty-year-old Mitch Whitehorse, a has-been marshal, round up Wade, his serial killer brother, before he destroys more lives?
I’m gonna say it…Mitch is a bit of a hypocrite…and I didn’t like him at first. Here’s why. He’s so dead set that Jane is an accomplice to Wade. He’s judgmental, irritating, and downright scornful of Jane’s proclaimed innocence. Which lead me to one single thought. He’s YOUR brother. You didn’t know for a long time, and you’re judging the wife because she says she didn’t know how much of a monster Wade turned out to be…tsk tsk.
I gotta admit, it really ramped up the conflict and made the resolution that much sweeter. Around midway, I started to realize why Mitch reacted the way he did: Guilt. Plain and simple. He’d suspected for years what Wade was capable of, and he turned a blind eye to it. Accusing Jane of his own crime made him feel better. It’s not fair, but it’s life.
Okay, enough dawdling in the psyche.
This is the second book by Dana Mentink I’ve had the pleasure of reading and I’m not disappointed. She has an ability to draw the reader in, weaving a web of intricate details that won’t let go until after the final page is turned. Getting to read a book set on a remote ranch just added an extra dose of beauty.
Her spiritual links are strong – something I appreciate. Jane has a solid faith in God, despite, or maybe because of, everything that’s happened to her. Other members on the ranch share a similar strength, but as secondary characters, it’s up to Jane to lead the spiritual charge.
The old ‘you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink’ reminds me of Mitch and his refusal to believe in God. It’s a universal problem. Mitch can’t understand why men like Wade exist if God is real. The answer is simple, but the realizations of it can be hard to digest, another aspect Danger on the Ranch manages to cover in at least some detail.
Another thing I’ve come to expect from Dana Mentink is her ability to pack action into a story without making it overwhelm the reader. The steady build increases just enough to make you want to keep reading without reaching that point of impossibility.
Overall, I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys action, drama, and suspense.
I requested a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
I am so excited about this book I can hardly write my review. It starts off immediately with a cringe worthy crime and my skin crawled as I read what this horrible person did. It's not every day that you have to worry if your psycho brother gets out of prison, but for Mitch it becomes a reality. I won't go into details about what Mitch's brother Wade has done, but I can assure you Wade is dangerous and has a cold heart. Putting your brother away in prison was satisfying for Mitch but Wade won't let a prison cell stop him from getting revenge.
When I first met Jane in the story I wasn't quite sure if I trusted her. How could she not know what her husband had been doing? It was right there under her nose and yet she tells everyone she had no idea. The last person Mitch wants to see is Jane because he has always believed she was part of his brother's crime spree. I loved the suspense when Mitch finds out that Wade has escaped and Jane has come to him for help. She says her life is in danger and she holds a secret that Wade would kill for.
The story is well written and I loved how the author has a lesson in the story about trust and forgiveness. Those two words I think are the hardest for anyone to deal with. How can you trust someone who you believe was part of a sinister crime? I'm surprised it doesn't take Wade very long to sniff out the trail of Mitch and Jane. He is determined to get revenge and readers we are in for a ride that goes bumpy and fast as a real threat comes to Mitch and his ranch.
The ranch has some wonderful characters living on it and I adored Ginny and Gus. Ginny is a feisty woman who doesn't back down to anyone. She has a big heart and wants to make sure that Jane is safe. I really liked the program the ranch was starting to help veterans adapt and it sure is something much needed in our country today.
I have been on the edge of my seat while reading this book. I love how Jane shares God with Mitch and explains how much God has protected her and blessed her. The action keeps coming as Wade gets closer to finding her and Mitch. I absolutely loved the twist in the story and was completely taken off guard. This is one of the best stories the author has written and is definitely a page turner. Get ready for a suspenseful ride as Danger on the Ranch explodes with faith, family, danger and second chances.
" Your past doesn't define you, Mitch. Your God does."
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit The review is my own opinion.
Cowboy + Suspense. This should be fun! I didn't quite realize what I was getting into when I started reading Danger on the Ranch by Dana Mentink. I don't think I had even read the back cover copy. I had some fun with Act of Valor, so I thought this one would be worth checking out. It was. I was sucked into the story from the first chapter when I realized exactly who I was dealing with.
Truth be told, as soon as I figured out Mitch was going to have to work with his ex-sister-in-law (the one he thinks conspired with his serial killer brother), I was caught. I had to keep reading. Was she the real deal?
This story had a few of my favorite things. I always love the families that are built on loyalties, not just blood, the ones that seem to have adopted each other as Mitch's aunt and uncle have "adopted" the folks on their ranch. These families remind me so much of God's family, and their acceptance of a woman the world has rejected just warmed my heart. I love how fiercely protective this family is, and I want to know their stories, too!
The themes of forgiveness and re-learning trust really resonated with me. I think they would with most of us, but this author amplifies them by bringing a serial killer into the family. And this story kept me on my toes! I didn't figure out the accomplice until the last minute, and then I actually felt pity.
Did Anything Bother Me in Danger on the Ranch?
Well...yep. There was one downside to this book; my personal pet peeve. It's the whole romance between a believer and a not-yet-believer thing. I get how it could happen. Trust me. But there's no check, no pause to even say "hey, we need to be on the same page in this whole God thing first." They eventually do end up on the same page, but then, we know how I feel about dating baby Christians too. So there's my personal pet peeve, the one that shows up through so much Christian romance. We think we need to intertwine someone's journey to Jesus with their journey to romance.
Would I Recommend Danger on the Ranch?
Yes! Despite my personal pet peeve, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys suspense and a good story of trust, forgiveness, and fresh starts.
I received a review copy of this book; all opinions are my own.
My Thoughts: This book. Wow. It was amazing. I loved reading it. A former US Marshal living the reclusive secluded life because he blames himself for not letting everyone know his brother was off in the head sooner. Even though really how could he have known what his brother was capable of? But then, he’s riding his ranch and boom there is his brother! Who is supposed to be in prison! And he’s determined to kill him for locking him up!
Oh my. That’s a lot of thick plot right there. But there is more.
Enter Jane. Jane married Mitch’s brother who is the serial killer in question. She’s terrified of him. Even though she filed for and obtained a divorce since he was sent to prison she knows that he always comes back for what he wants or thinks is his. And that means her. But she will stop at nothing to protect her son from him. The son that he doesn’t even know about. For that matter neither does Mitch until the day she saves his life.
I could not quit reading this book. It was amazing. I’ve not read this author before but quickly was looking her up on Amazon. Her style grabs you and sucks you in. The characters become your best friend but you think you’re really there and can feel your heart racing.
The plot is set up so well. I’m not going to give stuff away, but I didn’t figure it all out until almost the end where she reveals it all anyway. That’s how you know this is an amazing book. Because I’m pretty good at this mystery stuff and solving them is pretty easy for me. If you enjoy mystery books you’re going to love this one.
Because it’s a short book it is one that I easily read in a day. Or less than a day. Okay, so we’re talking an hour or so while rocking the nursing/sleeping baby so she’d stay asleep and I could finish the book. It’s that good.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. Whoa! Saddle up cowboy – this is one crazy ride! Imagine being the brother of a convicted serial killer. Mitch’s brother Wade has done the unthinkable and even though his heart and intentions are nothing like that of his sibling’s, he battles with the stigma of being related to such a notorious killer. Mitch is a retired US Marshal. He’s a do-good type to his core and helped put his brother in prison. Well, now Wade has escaped and is out for blood. That’s how this story opens. We’re talking full-on action-packed page-turner right from the get-go as Mitch is trying to not only protect himself, but also hesitantly protects the life of Jane Reyes, his brother’s ex-wife.
There was a lot of speculation that Jane had been involved in the murders Wade had committed, but as Mitch soon finds out, she’s been hiding the fact that they had a son together. His heart melts when he meets his nephew and feels even more drawn to the idea of protecting this family. At the same time, the pressing curiosity of how DNA works and wondering if his nephew could have the level of evil within him that his father has is something that’s hard for Mitch to shake. Jane knows that her and her son’s life is in danger and really, she needs Mitch’s help to run and put Wade back in prison where he belongs.
This is an “on the run” suspense story basically from start to finish. It would make for an exciting film. There are a lot of close calls and a lot of times when you simply don’t know who can or can’t be trusted. Adrenaline pumping suspense and a bit of romance all tied up with great elements of faith.
Trigger Warning: Murder and attempted murder, but nothing graphic is described.

Danger on the Ranch by Dana Mentink is the first book in a new series for this author. It is part of the Love Inspired Books. I am a HUGE fan of Love Inspired books and though Dana Mentink is a "new to me author", I was excited to read this book.
I will be honest, Suspense books are not normally a Genre that I read. Something about the title, the synopsis and the fact that it was about Cowboys and a Ranch, drew me into the book. I started reading the book a few days after I received it. It was a rainy Saturday and felt it was a good time to read. I am glad I choose a Rainy Saturday to read, as once I started reading, I couldn't stop. YES, this book most certainly is filled with Suspense and wonder, twists and turns and more.
Danger at the Ranch has a couple main characters: Mitch who is a former US Marshall who helped send his brother to prison. Wade is the brother who went to prison for being a Serial Killer. Mitch retires to the Country Life and thought he had relaxing and stress free days ahead. That is until his brother escapes prison. Mitch then has to protect his ex sister in law and her son from Wade. Will Mitch be able to protect Jane and the son, or will Wade find them before Mitch can protect them? You will have to pick up this book and find out!
Danger at the Ranch is a FANTASTIC book and it is a short, easy book to read. I was able to read the entire book in a couple of hours, as it is also HARD to put down once you begin reading. Dana Mentick is a GREAT writer who truly puts the title "Suspense Author" in play! Danger at the Ranch is filled with Suspense from beginning to end. This book rose way above my expections and I am glad I took a chance to read a genre I normally don't! FABULOUS BOOK!!
My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Danger on the Ranch. This is the first book in the Roughwater Ranch Cowboys Series. I am a big fan of Dana's books so I was thrilled to get this book in the mail. This story is well written, action packed, and full of faith. It's an awesome story and I know you are going to love it.
Former US Marshal Mitch Whitehorse put his brother in prison. His brother had become a serial killer. Mitch blamed himself for not doing something about it before all those women were killed. He moved out into the wilderness so he could be alone and deal with his guilt. He is out riding one night when he is shot at by his brother. Wade has recently escaped. His ex-sister-in-law shows up. She tells him she needs protection for herself and her secret child. Mitch isn't sure he believes her. How can he trust her?
Jane Reves suffered great torment from the press and the people she knew. They all believed she knew what her husband was doing, She divorced her husband and changed her name. She has hidden the fact that she now has a child but everything is about to blow up. Wade will kill her and take the baby. She runs to Mitch, he took him down once; he's the only one that can take him down again.
A journey full of terror as a mad man is chasing them. He wants them both dead and won't quit until he gets the job done. Can they trust each other. God has a plan for these two for a hope and an expected end. God has a plan for you too, a good plan and not for evil. Give Him your heart and watch Him work in your life.
Danger on the Ranch is the first book in the Roughwater Ranch Cowboy series by Dana Mentink and as I kept reading it the word, WOW kept popping out of mouth. I love when I have that kind of reaction to a book which I rarely do but in this case, my WOW's were justified.
There are two brothers who are as different as day and night. Mitch is a former US Marshall who is sane and kind whereas his brother, Wade is diabolical and a menace to society. The non strop action in this book had me engaged from beginning to end as I sat on the edge of my seat. As much as I loved the heart pounding scenes in the book I loved the sweet, caring nature of Aunt Ginny and Uncle Gus who provided a safe haven for Jane Reyes, the former wife of Wade. I loved the peaceful ranch setting and the wonderful characters we meet there.
Jane has been judged so unfairly which was understandable given the circumstances but through her faith she wasn't bitter but strong and filled with determination to protect her son. I had so much respect for her. I loved seeing the change in Mitch as he came to the realization that Jane wasn't the horrible person he thought she was.
This is easily one of the best books the author has penned and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. Danger on the Ranch is a fast-paced, thrilling, marvelous book which is why I highly recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was under no obligation to write a review. All opinions are my own.
Fasten your seat belts and get ready for a wild ride!
I loved this book, and especially the way that author Dana Mentink knew just how much backstory was needed. And how much to reveal at which part of this excellent book.
Lightening the mood was Ben, Jane's son. He was simply adorable with his love for ""twains"". His innocence contrasting with the evil of his father was stark. With the added suspense of what Wade would do when he discovered Jane's secret, just ... Wow!
The unknown person who helped Wade escape from prison provided plenty of mystery. With ample clues and misdirection, I was kept guessing at their identity until the end.
Mitch had difficulty believing in a God who would allow such evil to exist - Jane had to believe in God to give her hope in the face of it. Both struggled with guilt over crimes they didn't commit but thought they should have known about and prevented.
I'm so excited about this new series! I'm guessing Liam and Chad will be getting stories next and am really looking forward to seeing what suspenseful situations Dana Mentink comes up with for them!
I was given a copy of this book. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own.
