Slightly disappointed with this one to be honest. First let me start by saying, I am a massive fan of Maggie Hope and have read almost all of her books, I love historical romance books and she is one of the better authors for this category in my opinion. But I have to say this book was pretty predictable and left me unsatisfied. Now if your like me and have read many of her books you will see a steady pattern forming in her story plots (without giving any spoilers away) I will say the dilemma in this plot is used in most if not all of her books, which can be very trying and boring for the reader; feels very repetitive. The ending left me very unsatisfied, it was just something in the way it was finished that i wasn't particularly fond of; i didn't like the fact that a lot was left to the imagination after the story ending. I didn't have the usual sense of closure or have a warm glow in my stomach after i finished the book. In-fact if anything i felt the opposite.

But in saying that, I did grow fond of the characters in this story and did come to care about what happened to them. The story, as usual was well written and the plot seemed fully developed. I don't hate the story, it was a goodread not amazing; I wouldn't scream from the roof tops a chorus of recommendation for this book. But I would recommend it for those who love Dilly Court or just a good historical romance read.

Molly Mason's father has died in a pit accident and she is left alone and with no money and with her beloved brother Harry and his best friend Jackson whom Molly loves away in the war she struggles to find work and lodgings.
Ending up in lodgings where a man attacks her and accuses her of theft she goes to prison and when Harry and Jackson come home on leave they find her and Jackson pledged his love and plans to marry her.
But disaster strikes again and Jackson is missing presumed dead so Molly in comfort turns to her factory employer.
A baby is the consequence but then Jackson is found and comes home.
What will Molly do now and will Jackson love her with another man's baby?
A tale of tragedy, loss and love during the war where everything including the future is uncertain.
This was a great wartime tale full of drama and wonderful, believable characters and credible situations.

A great read, really enjoyed this book . It is the first book by the author and I will be looking for more . The ending left me thinking there might be a sequel .
I picked this book up out of a small box which is a community library in Oamaru , New Zealand . It had obviously been placed there by a tourist to our town as it was a book which had been withdrawn from the Falmouth Library , Cornwall , England.
So a good war story , perhaps the plot was a little traditional but it flowed well and there were some interesting characters.

I enjoy Maggie Hope's books. Nice easy reading, this one was set in WW2 which I like learning about through novels.

I think this is the first book I have read by this author and I will definitely be on the look out for more. In fact I enjoyed this one so much I would love there to be a BK#2!
Molly's father tragically dies in a pit accident (something that has happened in true life)she is left with no money and the only thing that keeps her plodding on in life is her brother Harry and his friend Jackson who are both away in the army. Molly has to stand on her own two feet and find a job to support herself so she manages to find a job in a local factory. Sadly Molly's landlord is not happy when she refuses his overly eager sexual advances and poor Molly ends up in jail. The landlord has her arrested on a made up charge of theft. Of course this makes Molly's life even harder as now with a criminal record who will employ her and give her a chance to earn a living to support herself.
I love this type of book, a real curl up cozy and read with a cuppa book!

I had high hopes for this book until about two thirds of the way through when I realised that there were strong parallels in the storyline between this novel and another of Maggie Hope's I have read, A Wartime Nurse. The main characters and their occupations were different enough but the paths they followed are so similar I could have written the last 100 pages myself! I would have liked to give 31/2 stars if I could but as this isn't possible I'll go for 4 rather than 3 as I liked the characterisations and thought on the whole it was well written. The ebook formatting was a bit dodgy in places, a complete lack of line spacing between those paragraphs where the story cut from one scene to another......got used to it after a while but it was a bit chaotic, playing havoc with the continuity.
