This is a lovely little self-help book which also doubles as autobiography.
It is written by Heidi Allen, a Canadian lady (wedding-gown store owner, lifestyle editor for a wedding magazine, co-host for a morning radio show, and producer on a number one daytime Canadian TV show), who bounced back from a break-down and founded a blog which became a movement - the Positive People Army.
What sets Stories apart from other self-help books I´ve read is that the proof is in the pudding here - Heidi Allen is basically telling you how she did what she´s done and you can see for yourself by looking the PPA up.
The book itself is a series of real-life vignettes which are bookended by questions you can ask yourself, raised by the themes in the chapters. The writing is clear and precise and the messages and exercises and well-thought out and relevant. How much you get out of the book is going to depend on your own take on coincidences, destiny, religion and spirituality and the role of the universe on your own life.
What goes without saying is that if you are suffering through life - particularly with relationships, direction and purpose - you´ll get something out of this book.

[Heidi was kind enough to send me a copy of her book in exchange for this honest review]

In Stories: Finding Your Wings, Heidi Allen shares with us short snippets of experiences she's had throughout her life, and the rewards that going into situations with a positive outlook can yield. Heidi's stories shine light on some positive ideas that we can all benefit from integrating into our daily lives and will have you embracing every challenge that life throws at you!

Strengths:
Where this book really shines is in the messages that Heidi conveys at the end of each section, they promote a positive mindset and urge you to seize every opportunity that is thrown at you without being patronising. Another aspect of this book I enjoyed was the writing style - despite it being a self-help/autobiographical novel, it was written more like a story which was unusual but refreshing!

Shortcomings:
At the end of each section in this book, Heidi asks us questions that we're left to ponder which is a great idea! However, I'd personally prefer them to have been worked into each story, giving me something to ponder as I read, although I can see the advantage of having them separate as it makes it easier to come back to them in your own time.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this book and how much I took away from it after reading, so it gets 4 stars from me! If you're a pessimist or just want to get a more positive perspective on life, give this book a go!

Disclaimer: I was given a free review copy in exchange for this review. This book was narrated from the point of view of Heidi Allen, the author and leader of the positive people army. I personally the narration coming from her point of view because she is such an honest, open person. There really is no consistent theme throughout this book but many individual themes were scattered throughout. These were all typical themes that you would expect to find in a self help book, however the difference between this book and other self-help books is that this book constantly relates back to situations that occurred in her life, or the life of her many friends. The idea that all of these themes relate to real life was definitely my favorite part of reading this book. I also enjoyed the question worksheets at the end of each chapter that help relate the lessons Heidi learned in this book to help guide you through your own personal life. I loved this book because it is so relatable and applicable to everyday life, and I would highly recommend this book to someone seeking self-help or someone reflecting on their life and the lessons that they have learned.
