The Daily Don: All the News That Fits into Tiny, Tiny Hands

Rate this book
The Best of “The Daily Don,” political cartoon that documents all the covfefe of the administration of Donald Trump. A hilarious, sad, frightening, artistic look at the world in the time of Trump!

The Daily Don is the best of artist Jesse Duquette’s fabulous Instagram gallery of political cartoons relating to the Trump administration. It began in the wake of the first Trump press conference that gave us the weird and unnecessary lie about crowd sizes. Right then, Jesse thought, if this was Day One and the lying was already this casual and obvious, what did this mean for Day 2? or Day 100? He drew his first Sean Spicer delivering his line (“Period.”), added a quote from Orwell’s “1984” that seemed particularly relevant, and posted it to Instagram with the caption that he was going to attempt to document every day of the Administration until the end—a vow that he was maybe 35% serious about.

But he has not missed a day and is still going strong. These drawings are the perfect antidote to the cries about “Fake News!” and “Build a Wall!” They help us all stay sane and smile (however nervously) through these strange times.

This book pulls together selections from the first nearly-two-years in office—from Muslim bans to The Mueller Report to Kellyanne Conway to Melania’s jacket, and all the beef-tweeting covfefe in between—and acts as a semi-accurate record of what these strangest of strange times were like for those of us who were there and lived to tell the tale. Because what better method to record a cartoon presidency than with colored pencils and markers?

I love this "cartoon" book about 45! The author's comics perfectly portray the goings on at the White House in the first two years of this administration. Just the right amount of humor, satire and disgust.

A book about the ”courage” to say whatever the other 80% of the country is saying. Boring.

I've been reading THE DAILY DON: ALL THE NEWS THAT FITS INTO TINY, TINY HANDS by Jesse Duquette for a while, in between other books I've devoured for my 2019 "Around the Year in 52 Books" Challenge. It was easy to pick up after completing a more lengthy novel or other lit genre because it's a book of selected, daily, satirical cartoons that the author/artist began creating and posting on FB as his form of resistance against the wrongful actions of the current US administration in DC. At the beginning of the book, he questions how he might express his dismay, disgust, and worries: "But what does it even mean? And HOW to 'Resist', exactly? I'm no political scholar, groups creep me out, and I can't pull off a beret... But I do like to draw... So I began documenting every awful act of this administration with a cartoon a day, everyday, part therapy, part comedy..."

What I love is that he often includes quotations below his artwork (which usually include a quote from perhaps a more educated and/or wiser individual than the subject of the book, although sometimes he apparently found it made more sense to include a different sort of quote -real or imagined- by that current WH resident or his staff. Some of the quotations are by Orwell, Ghandhi, Sophocles, Eisenhower, Salinger, Twain, Seneca, Dahl, Gibran. Ellison, Shakespeare, Woolf, Hammarskjold, and many more familiar names to me (and probably to most readers). I laughed at (and loved) the artwork and then appreciated the juxtaposition of the wisdom offered at the bottom of the majority of the pages.

This book is a treasure and a balm for some of my own worries about today's politics and what's happening in my country. And it also gives me hope when I find another writer/artist who seeks a return to the more accepting (of all people), compassionate nation/world that I thought we were becoming. I am now following the author/artist on FB, where I can view his more recent cartoons/comments. And I am listing it on meeting my GR Around the Year in 52 Books Challenge as #42. A book with a monster or "monstrous" character" because I consider the subject of this book to be monstrous.

Wonderful record of this horrible time.

I love this book. The drawings are vivid interpretations of current events, the titles are brilliant distillations of the same, and the quotations add to the whole effect. Warning: if you like Trump or what he’s currently doing to our country you won’t like this book. But it might be educational. Otherwise, enjoy. It’s sort of the graphical equivalence of Randy Rainbow.

I can't recall how or where I discovered Jesse Duquette but I came across one of his anti-Trump "The Daily Don" political cartoons and thought it was great. His drawing style is simple and to the point but it's his biting commentary that brings it all together.

Mr. Duquette also adds a quote at the bottom of his illustrations that add the exclamation mark to it all. Sometimes it's a poet or author talking about, say, dictators, and the quote fits perfectly when talking about Trump.

Other times it's a quote from (usually) a famous person that humorously applies as well.

I highly recommend "The Daily Don" book and keep your eyes open for an upcoming book as well!

Thanks, Mr. Duquette, for your protest and artistry.

Jesse Duquette has done a marvelous job of combining Trump activities with searing artwork and insightful quotes from well-known writers. This is a sad commentary on the President who knew too little. Yet it is so entertaining, you keep turning the pages to be reminded of all the dumb stuff Trump did and said while in office during his first two years. And to keep laughing. Grab a copy and be thoroughly entertained!
