You're right until now I haven’t dated. Ever. But for you, Lincoln Reynolds, I will. So what do you say? Will you go on a date with me?”

Lincoln Reynolds grew up cowboy. And that meant when you got thrown off a horse, you cowboy up and shake it off. You don't show fear, you don't let it shake you, and you never let them see you cry.

Matt has stood by and watched as each of his friends has found love, and he's truly happy for them. It isn’t that he doesn’t believe in love, he just knows it isn’t for him. And he had been fine with that until the night that strong cowboy fell apart in his arms. Now he wants nothing more than to be the one person Lincoln can lean on.

But for these two men to be together, Lincoln will have to realize it takes a strong man to admit when he is weak, and Matt will have to realize that everyone deserves a happy ever after.

Rule # 4- No Dating only hooking up. "You're right until now I haven’t dated. Ever. But for you, Lincoln Reynolds, I will. So, what do you say? Will you go on a date with me?” Lincoln Reynolds grew up cowboy. And that meant when you got thrown off a horse, you cowboy up and shake it off. There was just something very special about Nathan and Lincoln. Nathan got his story, and I was waiting for Linc’s. How things had left off between him and Matt in the last story……. tension was stirring and it wasn't good.

The two of them have been circling around one another from the beginning. Both stubborn and both with these incredibly stupid rules. All they’ve ever really wanted was each other. Now change is coming for them both and though they like it or not...it’s time to grow up guys.!

There is something in Matt's past that's holding him back. His sister has finally decided to move on....and seeing as this past affected them both, Matt had to make sure she was ready. She definitely was and was sure to put Matt in his place about it being time for him to move on also. Matt has to decide….is fear going to keep him from the man he loves or is he going to finally go after Linc? Matt is really a great guy. He tries to act tough, but it's defensive act. He’s been spied on with clients that he helps. He’s just amazing, sweet, patient, and adoring.

Linc has had some thinking to do also. Nate's married, and he’s so happy for him, but it’s triggered the loneliness in his own life that "one-night" hook-ups have been fixing...almost. He knows he's ready to settle down. He has to decide if he can finally move on from Matt, or is it time to just go for what he wants? He is just such a sweetheart with the biggest heart...a heart made of pure gold. He’s way too hard on himself. Cowboys, after all, are supposed to be tough but sometimes he forgets, and remembers instead that it’s ok to cry... it’s ok to want someone else to take charge.

These two men both knew they wanted to be together, but things in the past are often times just hard to get over. I loved watching these two. One would "beat around the bush" trying to figure out what they wanted, but once they figured it out???...things got suddenly not so complicated. It made me so happy when they finally started getting their acts together.

Working at the youth center also help to ground out things for them also. It helped to make their relationship even more special. AND... there is a surprise in this book!!!! The author gets it ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! This entire book is amazing. I have loved everything about Linc for a long time and was so happy when I saw that he had finally got his story.

Big, strong Lincoln/Linc, is a Paramedic/cowboy who has come home to help after his Dad had a heart attack. In addition, his step brother is getting married. Linc's looking for a house to buy in Austin, so when he gets back to work, he can make it a home.
Matt is beginning to want what his friends have, a good relationship, and he has faced his promiscuity and doesn't like it, he wants to settle and get a second chance with Linc. Matt works in Austin as a speech therapist.

After Thanksgiving, they met up at the ranch's barn and their sparks lit up the sky.

Both of them want the second chance at romance, but Linc doesn't know Matt has changed.

Once back in Austin, Matt was going to convince Linc that they belong together.

They volunteer together at the LGBT center, too. So, they begin to go places, date, and discuss the issues.
They'll be back at the ranch for Christmas.

Their super sexiness scorches the pages, and there's a twist.
ENJOY !

Cowboy Rules is the fourth book in the ‘Breaking the Rules’ series. It stars Lincoln Reynolds a paramedic, and Matt, who I can honestly say I have no idea what his profession is. This is told in first person from Lincoln and Matt’s povs, and in the second half of the book there is a third pov from Spencer, a thirteen-year-old boy.

This book confused me. The blurb makes it sound like a complicated enemy-to-lovers story, but that’s not what this is. This story is like two stories in one. It’s like the author wrote two short stories about Lincoln and Matt and then decided to combine them into one book. The first half of this story is about Lincoln and Matt and how they supposedly were friends, but Lincoln wanted a relationship and Matt didn’t want one. It hurt Lincoln and so they avoided each other. They solve that problem quickly and become a couple in the first half of the book. During the second half, a whole new topic is introduced about Spencer, a young teen who has been tossed out of his home by his step-father, and how Lincoln and Matt save him. I was surprised when the author had Spencer voice his pov in one chapter and then again when Spencer voiced the Epilogue. It made this plot feel more haphazard than it already was.

There are numerous things I didn’t like about this book. I mentioned how the plot was laid out and that was just one of many.

1) This book isn’t a stand-alone. Often authors introduce returning characters at a reasonable pace in a story with good explanations of who they are if a reader hasn’t read previous books in the series. In this one, characters were dumped on readers, making it so I was confused and only remembered a few of them half way through the plot.
2) The conflict between Lincoln and Matt wasn’t much of a conflict. Any worry they had was easily solved by changing their minds or talking to someone. Years of behavior fell by the wayside in an instant. The first of half of the book was boring without tension or conflict, so much so, I put it aside to start reading another story. I was bored.
3) Both Lincoln and Matt’s voices were the same before they became a couple. It made it difficult knowing whose pov I was reading if it wasn’t for labeling the chapters with the character names.
4) Once Lincoln and Matt became a couple, Lincoln’s voice changed. Many of his word usage and the way he spoke reminded me of women and female characters. Why I first noticed was because my mind immediately visualized a female speaking. It happened enough with Lincoln’s character I felt his voice was not consistent with what he spoke like during the first half of the book and I couldn’t shake the female character aspect. I suppose there are some men that speak the way Lincoln did, but I don’t know any in real life.
5) There were some instances of random head-hopping throughout the story.

Cowboy Rules didn’t work for me. It’s not what the blurb sounded like. It had no strong conflict between the main characters, the more interesting part of the book was the second half. As I mentioned, this feels like two short stories that were cobbled together as one story. Which could explain why Lincoln’s voice doesn’t sound the same as it did in the first half of the story. I won’t be reading other books in this series unless maybe the books are free and then they wouldn’t be high on my read list. I also don’t recommend this. I give this book, 2 Stars.

Oh my heart. I have adored every book in this series, but this is my absolute favorite right now. And believe me I love ALL the guys in this series, but there was something special about Nathan and Lincoln, and Nathan got his story. I was so waiting for Linc’s. And with how things had left off between he and Matt in the last story…….tension was stirring bad.
Those two have been circling each other from the beginning. Both stubborn as hell. Both with these stupid rules. When all they've really wanted was each other. Smh. They needed to be shared hard. Change is coming for both of them, though, whether they like it or not. And it's time to grow up.
Matt has something in his past holding him back. But his sister has decided to move on. Finally. And seeing as this past affected them both, Matt had to make sure she was ready. She definitely is and made sure to put Matt in his place about how it's time for him to move on too. And Matt has to decide….is fear going to keep him from the man he loves or is he going to finally go after Linc? Matt is really a good guy. He tries to act all tough and stuff but he's been spied on with clients he helps and he's just amazing. Sweet, patient, adoring.
Linc has had to do some thinking too. With Nate being married, he's so happy for him, but it's triggered the loneliness in his own life that booty calls are fixing. He's ready to settle down. But he has to decide can he finally move on from Matt or is it time to put his foot down and go for what he wants? He is such a sweetheart. Has the biggest heart of gold. I hate when he's so hard on himself though. Cowboys are supposed to be tough and sometimes he forgets, it's ok to cry, it's ok to want someone else to take charge.
These two knew they wanted to be together, but past things are hard to get over. I loved watching these two. The would beat around the bush to figure out what they wanted, but once they figured it out....BAM! It made me so stinking happy when they started getting their shit together.
Working at the youth center grounded some things for them too. It made their relationship so special. And the surprise in this book!!!! OH. MY. GAH! JACKI I LOVE YOU CUZ IT WAS PERFECT!
This book is amazing. I have adored Linc for so long and am so happy he gets his story. He’s just the best. And has the best for him ready. Squeeeeeeeeeeee! So so good!!

A man in a black wife-beater and western style hat stands in front of what appears to be a pile of hay. Dual title font, both are clear and legible. Author font is crisp and easily seen. Good composition. I enjoyed the story synopsis and hoped it could be read as a stand-alone.
> > Looking Deeper < <
POV ~> Multiple first-person, defined and easy to follow.

While this is book 4 in the series and I found myself a little overwhelmed by the number of secondary characters that made up Lincoln and Matt’s circle of friends, many of which that seemed to have had their story told already, the author did a fairly decent job assisting new readers with getting to know everyone. That said, a new reader would greatly benefit from reading the previous books first; particularly Nathan’s story since Nathan seems to play an important role in Lincoln’s life.
That said, I enjoyed the plot concept and characters. The chemistry was present. Neither lead character was flawless but they both were accepting of the other. The story played out nicely with some drama and minimal conflicts. Predictability was low. The resolution was solid enough to be satisfying.
I’m happy to have discovered a new-to-me author and plan to look into the rest of the books in this series.

More benefits than friends, more friends than benefits, but never more than friends-with-benefits. Lincoln wanted to change the status quo by moving into something a bit deeper despite his fears and relationship inexperience, but he didn't anticipate Matt's fears and reservations being much larger than his own. When Lincoln's father's health gives him a chance to change the scenery and get some space from his romantic problems both men find a bit of clarity regarding their hearts. Lincoln wants to be free from Matt, but Matt realizes there's no one he wants more than Lincoln. If he can find his courage he might be able to win his cowboy before it's too late.

Having gotten to know these men in the periphery of the other Rules books this story didn't feel like insta-love or insta-lust at all. If read on its own, it might be seen that way, but the depth has been building for quite some time now and I couldn't be more pleased how these men finally get onto the same romantic page together. They were hella steamy, so sweet I needed to brush my teeth, and they communicated. Wait, they used their words? Why, yes, yes they did. Lots of points right there that they didn't shy away from expressing what they needed, wanted, feared, and hoped. And when their hearts reached out to Spencer who needed them? It's like they were already so united that they couldn't help but work toward the same goal. I really loved how this story came together for these two men and that neither of them were ashamed of their "dating" history but knew that from then on it would be just the two of them. Their expectations and fears were realistic and addressed appropriately. I'm totally sold on Matt and Lincoln.

This is technically a standalone, but if you DO read this as a standalone, it's gonna seem very fast-paced and insta-lovey to you, because most of the build-up to their relationship takes place in previous books, so I recommend reading the other books before starting this one.

I had read the other books, so I was able to appreciate the romance and the revisit with all the characters.

It was a little thin plot-wise, but the plot that was there, grabbed me - especially the parts with Spencer (which I totally called pretty early on, btw!), as self-chosen families and MCs who are parents or caretakers are my kryptonite.

While I have enjoyed the majority of the books in this series, I've had a few things that have bothered me with regards to plot line/character history issues. They were all normally pretty minor and didn't do anything to really interfere with the story, so no big deal. Until this book. In book 1, it was suggested that Linc had some sort of history that made him chose smaller, twink type guys, that they they weren't actually what he would choose otherwise. Now when we finally get his story in this book, there is not a word that resolves that suggestion and gives the back story behind it. It was supposedly that story that kept him from wanting a relationship in the first place, and part of the premise for his weird relationship with Matt, but it isn't in this book at all. You only get Matt's back story and reasoning. So you have essentially been given this plot line in book 1 that isn't even left dangling in this book, it just flat out doesn't exist.

The other thing I wasn't a fan of, as sweet as it was, was the Spencer story line. The way it was handled and resolved was utterly unbelievable. Yes, this is fiction, but please, please, PLEASE don't just throw something in there that isn't actually legal IRL.

So, while this was an okay story, I was expecting something completely different with the hints that had been dropped in earlier books. With that and the lack of believably, this was a disappointment.

This is a sweet book with a beautiful storyline and I really enjoyed it. It is well-written, low angst, funny, emotional, sexy and the characters are amazing. Lincoln and Matt are perfect together but it takes a while for Matt to realize that he wants to have a real relationship with Lincoln. Once Matt decides he's all in he has to convince Lincoln to give him a chance. I love their first date and the chemistry between them is smoking hot. The best part of this story for me is Spencer and how incredibly compassionate and caring Lincoln and Matt are with him. The secondary characters are amazing as well and the ending is perfect. I can't wait to read the next book in this great series.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

I'm back, lol. So I read the story about Nathan and Alex and wasn't a fan. I went for this one anyway because I •l o v e • cowboy stories and it looked interesting. Some of the same issues: grammatical errors, paper characters, etc.
However, Lincoln and Matt's story is much more well written. I definitely enjoyed this one more.

I did mark it as dnf. It got a bit draggy at the end and then this big thing happened Not saying things like that don't happen, but it did feel a tiny bit unnecessary and rushed. So yeah, I almost made it to the end but not quite. I never saw the full resolution to that Big (Unrealistic) Thing, but I'm guessing it probably had questionable legality tbh lol

Jacki James' Cowboy Rules is a fantastic addition to her Breaking The Rules series.

Matt's always been a one night stand kind of guy. Essentially, his sense of guilt is large, as he's punishing himself by not letting himself be happy. Lincoln, meanwhile, feels stuck, as he's been watching all his friends moving forward with their lives.

Matt and Lincoln are two men who don't know what they're doing, as Lincoln has no dating experience. They'll have fears and doubts they have to face. But, as they try to figure out what their rules are, I enjoyed every second.

They're are a fantastic couple who just charm the reader with little things, like playing footsies under the table. Things like this just melted my heart.

As for the sex, we knew they had great chemistry, but it's amazing to witness it. I also enjoy the surprise in their sex lives, as it's a great way to change things up from the norm. These two are just so much fun.

And of course, I love the group of friends in this book. They're nice, kind, and have created a strong family with one another. I also adore the kids.

I absolutely love Jacki James' writing style. And I love, love, love this story. It's a feel-good, emotional ride, that contains so much love.

The whole Breaking The Rules series is superb. Each book gives us a glimpse of new members to this big, extended, chosen family. And this time, we get to see Spencer. I cannot wait to read more of Spencer.

4.5 Stars for The Cowboy and The Player.
I adored Cowboy Rules. It's my first Jacki James book and now I plan on reading them all! It is technically a stand alone, but I highly recommend reading the previous books in the series first. I'm so sad I didn't, because I was quickly introduced to all of the characters from the series. Without knowing who was who and their relationships, it took me a bit to figure everyone out. But I soon as I did, I found myself loving this close nit group of friends. They all brought so much to this story.
I would have also loved to have witnessed the evolution of main characters relationship throughout the books. But honestly even with going in new, Jacki James still had me fall hard for her boys. Right from the start, I totally connected with Lincoln and Matthew. I felt all their emotions. Our adorable Cowboy Lincoln wants more from his sexy "friend's with benefits" Matt. But Matt
doesn't do relationships and has no interest ...or does he?? I loved their vulnerability and insecurity. Just two guys trying to figure their relationship out. Their story had a steady pace with a wonderful storyline. I was all in and flipping the pages. I didn't want it to end.

Cowboy Rules is fun, sweet story that gave me butterflies and filled my heart. The addition of an adorable kid only enhanced it further!

So much goodness

I have enjoyed this series so much. I love that we finally get to enjoy Matt and Linc's story. Both guys have been happy being single and they don't date, but Lincoln is done with that lifestyle. They already broke their roles with each other once, Linc wants to break them again.

Matt is using an event in his past to hide from his possible future. His sister gives him some news that shakes his beliefs and gives him a glimmer of hope. How can he make Linc believe that he has changed? Matt has hurt Linc before, can he forgive him and move forward?

Alongside their possible relationship, they are trying to protect the new boy at the LGBT center. They want to help him and protect him, but he runs anytime someone tries to get close. When he gets desperate, Linc saves him and he's hurt instead.

There is a lot to fight for, they just need to fight together.

I enjoyed this story and loved how everything played out. I love how connected all the characters are and how well they support each other. I can't wait for more in this series or world.

I received an ARC of this from LesCourt Author Services. This is my honest opinion and review.

Happy Couple?

Lincoln and Matt finally got it right, both were one and done men until they met each other. Matt being one of the men with rules started to break them after he met Lincoln, but he couldn't bring himself to break the last one and to him the most important one which was No Relationships. Not only did Matt get Lincoln to break his rule, but he also found his way into Lincoln's heart and when he asked Matt on a date he shut him down. Lincoln's broken heart turned to anger so when his dad got sick and Lincoln started to panic it was Matt who was able to calm him,but also pissed him off. It was a a tragedy from Matt's past that was holding him back from what he wanted and what he was feeling for Lincoln. But with the help of his family he realized that Lincoln was the man for him and he'd do what ever he could to get a second chance. With the help of family and friends he got that chance and they became not just a couple but a family. Great Story!!😍😍

I now have a new favorite in the Breaking the Rules series! How could I not fall in love with Matt and Lincoln. Watching the push/pull of their relationship during the previous books I wasn't sure what to expect when they finally got their own story. What I got was a heart full of love for these men.

This story is perfection. No unnecessary drama, just real life issues and emotions. Each man struggling with figuring out what they want in life. Acting on their feelings and learning to trust in the other person. To open themselves up to a life together.

I loved how family and friends are the cornerstone of their lives. How generous and loving they are in opening up that circle to new people. Seeing a child in need and loving this child added such richness to their already full hearts. I know I will be revisiting Matt and Lincoln many times.

I think I have a new favorite in the series. I've enjoyed all of the books but I really liked Matt and Lincoln. One of my catnips is couples building a relationship and forging a family at the same time, so I loved Matt's and Lincoln's growing relationship with Spencer. I usually don't go to 5 stars until I find myself re-reading a book, but I did end up re-reading the final chapters.

I do wish I had re-read Work Rules, since Nate and then his and Lincoln's parents are such a presence in the book. The characters from the other two books appear, but Nate and Alex are very strong secondary characters. I feel like I see an inkling of the next book (whether in this series or starting a new one) so it will be fun to watch to see what's next.

The Cowboy Tules by Jacki James is the fourth book in the Breaking the Rules series. Lincoln and Matt are great characters. I loved watching them discover what they wanted separately and then together.. they had growing to do and things to figure put. The push and pull we have seen with them finally came to a head and they finally found how they fit together.. and its perfection. Their story is a great mix of fun, sweet and aexy... very sexy. The other characters in the book are also entertaining and interesting... old ones from previous books and new ones we get to see here. This book delivers a wonderful story with likeable characters to root for.

I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.

Steamy, sweet, heart-mending romance that will make you smile. I loved Cowboy Rules and i was so happy to read about Lincoln and Matt finding their time to really connect and find happiness. I have liked seeing both men from the previous books and i happy to find what each man had in their hearts.

The story is well written and the story-line will keep you reading. I liked that there was no unnecessary drama and that these guys were able to communicate and create an amazing relationship.

This book could be read as a stand-alone, however it would make the interactions between these MC's appear as kinda instant love, when in fact their relationship was developing for a long time. The previous books are awesome and so worth reading, so treat yourself to the whole series.

Such a sweet story

Lincoln finally gets his HEA! I really enjoyed this book. Lincoln and Matt have been circling each other for a while so it was nice to finally get here.

The book is a sweet, low angst journey to finding your chosen family. I really enjoy that aspect of this series. The book also does a nice job laying down the path for the next book, a joint venture between James and author Michelle Frost, called Age Rules featuring hospital president Darren and Andre, an MMA fighter mentioned in this book and part of Frost’s Open Wounds universe. I had already read that book so it was nice to see the pre-quel references here!

This is such an enjoyable series with characters so well drawn that you wish these people were your real life friends. Highly recommend.

I read this entire series in a weekend, mainly because I wanted to read #6 but felt I should start at the beginning. After reading the reviews, I wasn't expecting to be as engaged as I was but, then my natural optimism for a good fiction story kicked in and the things others did not like, did not bother me at all. I found the whole living arrangement between the ex's fascinating and wished more divorced couple would work harder to get along for the kids (maybe not sharing a backyard but close). I liked the MC's and how they continue to grow throughout the series and having all the MC's interact with each other, always my favorite kind of series. You could probably read one of the books as a stand-alone but they all have their own story/HEA.

Cowboy Lincoln Reynolds grew up knowing you show no fear and never let them see you cry. Matt has never dated but for Lincoln, he will make an exception because as much as he knows that love is not for him, the night that Lincoln fell apart in his arms changed him forever. Can Lincoln realise it takes a strong man to admit when he is weak, and Matt realise that everyone deserves a happy ever after?

I enjoyed this story with the two men dancing around each other while needing to accept a few changes in order to find their happiness. It was great to read a story where they got a HEA that was deserving for them both. Easy to feel and get swept away in the story. An MM story that contains mature content.

When these 2 finally figure it out they figure it out and jump right in.

Linc and Matt have been building up throughout the series and to say it was worth it isn't enough. These 2 stubborn men have finally come to their senses but geez do they go fast. No easing into this relationship or testing it out. No conflict to send them running from each other as that all occurred in the last 3 books....lol. However, Sawyer is amazing with being what forces these 2 to actually communicate with the whole WHEN things are gonna happen.

Also OMG Sawyer........maybe one day we will see him again in his own book ;)

MM + Second Chance + Cowboy = a fun time

I did like the second chance romance between Lincoln and Matt. I thought they had a great pull to one another that caused them not to be able to stay away from one another. They had this tension caused by what happened in the past. Though that conflict was there, I thought there could have been a lot more angst and a lot more push and pull between them. It was pretty for them to get back together without too much struggle. I wanted more of that struggle. With that being said, I did like them together. They were both sweet together combined with some spicy moments. It warmed my heart when they became a family in the end.

Cowboy rules

This is a book we all have been waiting for, Matt and Lincoln. They have been explosive from the time we met them. A love hate love relationship... oh no. Don’t use the word relationship.

Matt is a non relationship guy. He’s a one and done. Lincoln is looking for more and Matt isn’t willing to give it.

You know that saying absence makes your heart grow fonder or you don’t know what you got until it’s gone. I think it totally applies to these guys

Once they get their heads in the right spot they are so sweet with each other.

Cowboy Rules was a great final installment to this series. Throughout the entire series we saw glimpses of Matt and Lincoln’s budding relationship and this book really brought the best out of the characters. I especially loved seeing Matt and Lincoln form an almost instantaneous bond with Spencer. My hope is Jacki will continue with either a spinoff series or individual standalone books for Darren and Miles. And hopefully several years down the road we will get Spencer’s book. Well done Jacki James. This was such a fun and unique contemporary book and series!

Matt is a commitment-phobe with a one and done rule and Lincoln never really saw himself settling down. However, after hooking up with each other a couple of times Lincoln realises that he wants more from Matt but Matt refuses to go on a date with him. Lincoln is called back to the family ranch to help out after his father has a heart attack and when the couple meet again a few months later Matt begins to realise how much he has missed Lincoln and that he is ready to give a relationship a chance. He just needs to convince Lincoln that he is serious. A really enjoyable read.

This is the fourth book in The Breaking the Rules Series. An interesting book the writing was good. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters likeable. The characters were developed and thought out. Lincoln and Matt are the MC’s of this book. There was humor, a club, friends and family, a wedding, homeless kids, a hospital, a puppy and more in this book. I can recommend this as a good read. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

The one I was waiting for

Doesn't everyone want to know what's going on with Lincoln and Matt? Yes everything is just so easy but at least we had a build up.
But I was expecting the easy happily ever after because that's just the was this series is written. Everything just works out perfectly!!! This is where I end the series. I only cared about the main 3 characters to have their happily ever after and I got it. So now it's time to move on to something with more depth and just had more realistic.
