A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.

Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.

Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

The restart of Young Justice is here!

Young justice, similar to teen titans, is basically superheroes very similar to justice league, but younger (teenagers or young adults) and they team up to face bad guys.

Right away introduced to some faces haven't seen in awhile like wonder girl and impulse, and then of course Superboy (Connor version) all jammed packed into single issue.

The reason they team up is a bit silly and contrite but that's superheroes for ya. A really fun reintroduction to a team I've been waiting for to return! A 4 out of 5.

I need to start with this:
Dear Brian Michael Bendis,
I'm sorry for prematurely hating you because everyone said it was your fault Super Sons was cancelled. I guess you kinda know what you're doing.
From one of your newest fans (I gueeeesss),
Kadi.

This was an interesting start to bringing YJ back. I would actually give this 3.5 stars. Not 4. I have too many questions. Who are these Gemworld people? Who is Jinny Hex? Why was Cassie reluctant to get involved? What was Tim doing in Metropolis? What on earth happened at the end?

This has so much promise but not much happened in this issue. A summary: That's it. So I think this is really just a precursor to what is to come. Kinda like a Rebirth issue is meant to reintroduce the characters to the readers. There were lots of things going on in this issue, lots of characters being introduced, but nothing was being explained. I'm assuming explanations will be coming later...

Impulse was great! Such a fun character who was constantly making inside jokes and just being his crazy impulsive self. I liked seeing Tim and Cassie's dynamic it was pretty interesting. Teen Lantern is the real mystery. Never heard of this character before so I'm hoping they flesh her out properly. Oh, and of course, the art was beautiful. So great. I love Gleason's work. Epic every time.

And I'm just going to leave this here because this was basically me when I heard YJ was coming back:
Check out my review for issue #2!

This was a fun introduction to a new series with some new and old characters. However the cool vibrant art doesnt make up for the simple plot. I got a very YA type vibe which sometimes puts me off hahah.

I was so excited to see this finally come out. Full disclaimers: I'm a Young Justice NERD. I got into comics with Tim Drake being my favourite character shortly after "Graduation Day". I've got a lot of feels invested in this and I tend to go the optimistic route with potential favourites.

So...

This story didn't do it for me. I like a lot of what happens here -- Bendis drawing on running gags (the recurring Metropolis store destruction); the art; the introduction of our newest Hex character. But beyond that, there's an insane number of events and characters happening here making the story too busy. Too many new faces to learn. Too many old characters reverting back to their old personalities. Too many villains talking TOO MUCH. We got a crisis (pun intended) that, at the beginning, was really scary. A cop gets turned into a rock. Innocents are harmed, too. How will our heroes get out of this one?! But after, having the mood swing to "hahah, running gags. Also, we're punching things and talking! The bad guys are being snarky to each other" all take away from the drama the danger brings, which leads me to feel like sometimes Bendis is ON and other times he's no longer trying because he's established the ON bit so there's nothing more that needs to be done to maintain it. The comic was very inconsistent.

Also inconsistent is the canon. As stated, I'm the biggest Tim Drake fan and I've been keeping tabs on him throughout Rebirth. Tynion IV did a really cool arc in Detective centering around how Tim Drake doesn't remember Kon-El. Superboy doesn't exist in this post-Crisis world, and though we're dealing with a Crisis aftermath story in Young Justice, somehow all the characters REMEMBER Superboy? Since when? And if so, why haven't they bothered to go looking for their friend?

The story plays fast and loose with these questions of canon and I am very concerned that they'll ultimately be brushed under the rug for the sake of "telling the present story". Look not behind the curtain, etc. I'm invested in the characters a little more deeply than the average reader, so I do in fact want to know why characters have reverted back to their twelve-year-old mentalities, or if canon even applies. This latter especially, as we're referencing some events in previous DC history. If Bendis plans to pick and choose events while ignoring other equally-important character-events (especially ones I'm very fond of, I *LOVED* Tim's "who the hell is Kon?" moment in Detective) I won't be enjoying this as much as I am annoyed. I recognize the challenge in trying to recapture the spirit of the first Young Justice without sacrificing any of the character growth, but it's a tall order and if I'm paying in time and money and DC's put in the name-power of Bendis forward to help this succeed, I kind of expect more. We're only first issue in, so I'm ready for issue #2 to prove my fears wrong. If I get to happily eat my hat, I'll also gain a new favourite series. So...win win?

I hope even a bit of that rant made sense. This is well drawn and brightly coloured, and it's hard to get a lot of characters together and give them all depth and spotlight time. It just feels like there's more challenges for this to overcome than there are gems (pun intended) to win me over.

I am not really a Bendis completist, but ah what the hey, why not check out Young Justice.

Young Justice is one of the new Wonder Comics YA titles. For obvious reasons, Young Justice makes sense as a YA title. In ironic ways (since Bendis made his name on noir style comics), Bendis is perfect for the title, and the title is perfect for him. In retrospect, it's hard to think of another artist to place on this title but Patrick Gleason.

This has a bit of Teen Titan-ish vibe that I think would appeal to non-comic readers, but enough for the Wednesday regulars. The title isn't exactly Teen Titans, though it close enough that I don't think adding Jenni Hex (Jonah's descendant) or Teen Lantern would throw anyone off.

It is kind of a fun, lightweight team story whose loseness makes it work well- snappy one likers, big splashes and the like. Pricey at $5, it does ensure that you feel you get a good deal of content, while allowing Gleason to play with big scenes.

It will be inevitable to compare this to Ultimate Spiderman. It's ambitions are nowhere that grand, though some of the stuff that worked there works here. It's hard not to like this if you are looking for something that promises lightweight and quick, but deceptively, there is a lot more to the story and characters than one might figure for something called a YA title. I likely will be looking forward to this ride.

Okay, so I’m pretty sure that this series is targeted at a slightly younger audience. I could be wrong on that, of course, but that’s how it felt. It was still fun and interesting; it just came off a little light. Then again, introduction issue, so that can happen anyway.
The new team, which isn’t quite a team just yet, consists of: Jenny Hex, Robin (‘well, one of them!’), Kid Flash (who may or may not be trying to change his name to Impulse), Wonder Girl, and Teen Lantern. I actually really liked the design for Teen Lantern…I just wish they had named her something else. It feels a bit silly and juvenile (I know, she’s a teen, but really?).

A wonderfully fun start to this new series with some of the nicest art I've seen out of DC in a while. It does feel a bit typical for the beginning of a team book, but not in a annoying way, more in a "Yeah, this is kinda how this goes" way. I don't know if I'm completely hooked yet, but I did like it enough to say I will definitely be getting the next issue.

LOVED this comic and I IMMEDIATELY want more of the same. Jinni Hex takes my breath away. Bendis always knows how to open a comic with loads of action and impending character development. This is going to be a great run.

I really like the cool collection of heroes on this team. Robin, Wonder Girl, Impulse, Teen Lantern, and Jonah Hex’s daughter, Jinny.

Bendis really has fun with this group. And the art is really good.

My usual caveat for rating an issue #1: I tend to dislike issue #1 of anything!

In this issue in particular, the cast is so large that it felt like I read nothing but introductions. That said, I would rather have everybody introduced in this issue so we can get to some plot, rather than dribbling out the introductions over an entire arc. (Although, I haven't read #2 yet, so maybe I shouldn't act certain that the introductions are through for now.)

All that said, I do expect that I'll enjoy the series to follow!

Because I loved the Titans series and the new season of Young Justice, I want as much Teen Titans as I can possibly get. This new series is very exciting.

It seems like It's setting up for a good story, but there was very little of it: the amount of ads was making it hard to enjoy.

I mean... it’s okay... but Teen Lantern?? C’mon really... Teen Lantern??? And isn’t Bart long gone? I thought most of these characters got phased out in New 52 or some crap like that?

This new comic series doesn’t directly tie-in with the series, it’s more of a return to the original comic series from 2011. Having said that, I’m sure the two streams will cross eventually.

I'm scoring this a little low and that's because I can't accept just anything from a Young Justice title. And Bendis has spent the majority of his career letting me down.

There are some good things here (return of familiar faces and some gorgeous art) and there are more bad things (basically introducing us to an alternate dimension in order to get this team together, poor dialogue, and so much focus on action scenes that every character gets exactly one personality beat).

That being said, I hear Bendis is leaving the title after one story arc so if I can hold on through that all should be well and good.

UPDATE: On second reading, I'm raising this from 2-stars to 3-stars. I've been out of comics for a few months so the baggage of what all else is going on in the DC universe isn't clouding my ability to enjoy this story.
