My dumbass decided to read this web novel then I got suckered into it before realizing it was ongoing for the last two year. And it probably won't be completed for another year. Ugh. Anyways I discovered there was a difference between a webfiction and ebooks. I thought they were synonyms for self publications. An ebook is available as a completed whole work where as webfiction is similar to fan fiction and published in chapters.
I can't read Chinese so I had to rely on English translations and several blog reviews. It's my understanding the novel was The Adonis Next Door then it become Prince Charming's Next Door to now the current title Back Then I Adored You. The first chapter is very aggressive as it starts with a rape scene between the main characters. The male lead is Gu YuSheng the 26 y/o CEO of his family's business and the female lead is Qin Zhi’Ai 24 y/o who took time off from grad school to deal with her late father's gambling debts. The chapters are less than 100 words each so it's a quick read and then hours later you realize you're at chapter 400. There are several odd plots like several scenes of spousal rape, a kidnapping, body double, amnesia, military special forces, and fated love. Then for some reason the author decided to focus on another couple around chapter 800. I mean the story line between GY and QZA wrapped up nicely so it made sense to focus on this secondary couple but I'm use to book series with their own titles. The 2nd male lead is Lu BanCheng who is also another rich CEO and the 2nd female lead is Xu Wennuan who is besties with QZA. This story is currently ongoing so I'm stuck at chapter 961 but will update this review once the webnovel is complete. Ultimately this is a free to read novel by an author that's probably not paid anything for her work. Read this guilty pleasure at your own risk.
Edit 11.08.2020: I don't remember when I wrote the initial review but today I finally checked on the novel's status and found it was completed so I quickly finished the second story. It started at chapter 800 and ended 1030. I was wrong when I thought the novel was written slowly!!! I saw the author's note at the end of chapter 1030 time stamped 2017. More than likely it was the translation process that took a while. ugh selfish and inconsiderate of me. Many many many apologies to the author and translator!! So this second couple was extremely a.n.g.s.t.y!!! Self sacrifices, misunderstandings, somewhat similar plots as the first couple. There was rape, kidnapping, rich dudes. I'm not sure why women in China would consider these devices as romantic. This type of "alpha" behavior is ugly. to me. I did notice that the author lightly touched on mental health issues after an abusive relationship so I applaud her for that attempt. Anyways the novel just doesn't end! Surprise there are two short stories lol. I will try to read them as well since they're considered a part of this big ass novel.
The first short was QZA's younger brother and his college sweetheart Su Qing chapters 1031 to 1073. I was uncomfortable with the author's portrayal of Su Qing's husband. He's an abusive asshole that hated women and for some reason had to marry her to conceal the fact that he was gay. Historically homosexuals have been around forever not sure why it's now taboo. But he wasn't the only abusive jerk the lover Qin JiaYan was too. In one scene he abandoned her in the middle of the night at a high school parking lot after verbal abuse. Ending was not satisfying for me. I suspected she was raising their child some where but their mess was unresolved.
The second short was QZA's daughter little peanut and her misunderstandings chapter 1074. The automated phone bit was cute but oh man those condoms given to G-pa at New Years was hilarious!

I enjoyed the story and where I was reading the updates took forever to come out but I still found myself wondering what would happen next.
The last couple plotline had some major issues involving r*pe and a lot of tough subjects. I will say other then what actually happened between the two, the characters portrayal of the after affects was very realistic.
The first couple was a lot of drama and a lot of waiting to see if they would actually end up together or not. I enjoyed the when will he find out parts.
Overall I would recommended this Web novel to other people but I would highly suggest maybe skipping the last couple's journey.

God what a fucked up series !
The h is a brainless lovestruck DOORMAT with no integrity and no dignity whatsoever ! She's calling him handsome after he RAPES her then procedes to emotionally and vercally torture her . multiple times , over several occasions ! She says she loves him even after knowing that he's a two faced twat with no basic human decency and no principles !
I dnfed this book after 56 chapters by the way , just couldn't read through another chapter .
