Write about something you know.. not this!!

Too little research on the era as it relates to England, no understanding of the English language or it's people and how they behaved, would react or talk. Failure to understand that to write a good book (or to be fair even a mediocre one) much more research, development and understanding of the subject is necessary. I find the lack of knowledge and the apparent lack of research takes away any hope of a decent read.

The story idea had merit but it's been so badly written and explained that it's not the book it could have been.

Wooden characters who don't develop. Stilted, conversation which fails to flow or sound like real people talking. Odd greetings and endearments between characters that don't fit or suit the supposed characters she's writing about.

Plot holes.. how was the body left outside Parliament at midday with not a sole seeing anything? No one saw anything?

But the biggest issue is that two self-respecting, vigorously determined Suffragists were in relationships by choice with a man who was the antithesis of all they held dear and had gone into those relationships despite having actively involved themselves in demonstrations that were supposedly arrestable offenses. There is nothing redeeming about the male character. No logical reasoning fits with any of the story. The entire time he's portrayed as a drunken layabout who refuses to do much more than drink, lie and cheat. He's not ever been good looking, kind, respectful, wealthy or even a remotely nice guy. He's a lower class scrounger boozing his life away, she's from the upper classes, although without ready access to any family money, and a believer in the Suffrage Movement. So why would a confirmed Suffragist, actively tackling the great inequality of the rights of women in England marry a poor, obnoxious man who had not a single redeeming feature and live by choice in poverty?

The plot becomes difficult to follow because of how badly it's written. Julia as usual suddenly remembers a vital piece of evidence and solves the case. Then it's just a matter of explaining to the nice inspector that she's a genius and he needs to hide while she lays trap.. as usual a confession follows, arrests are made and Julia pat's herself on the back and brags about how clever she is to the detective who would have been more than able if she'd told him the whole story.

Not as bad as the previous but it would be hard to do worse so it's not exactly a compliment.

And she's done it again in Suffragette Sabotage by Bettie Jane, the 2nd book in the Piccadilly Ladies Club mystery series. In this one we once again find Julia Barlow, now an investigative journalist after solving and reporting so well on her last successful murder case, deep into another murder. This time though it's an outspoken suffragette with a shady past whose been targeted.

Julia has joined the local women's group who are strong advocates in the suffragette movement. The president of the group Ms. Meredith Watson learns her sister is missing. They've never been close, Meredith doesn't agree with the tactics her sister uses to get her point across and won't allow her into her women's group, but when she learns she's missing she realizes it is her sister and she'll do anything to find her. A woman's body is discovered on the steps of Parliament, but the body is so disfigured the coroner is having a hard time identifying who she is. After Julia enlists her favorite investigator at Scotland Yard, yes the handsome inspector Gibbs, they're off and running to seek answers. The body is identified as Meredith's sister's friend, so where is her sister and why is she missing? The inspector, Julia and her super sleuth society friends all come together to once again solve this mystery and get to the bottom of this fun whodunnit!

This is only the 2nd book in the series so far, but I'm hooked. I love the characters and Julia is a personal favorite. She's a woman before her time. She's outspoken, smart and does as she pleases. At this point her maybe love interest the handsome inspector just lets her do her thing, he's happy she's able to get into the social circles and ask the questions he can't. She's that special kind of sidekick he needs when it comes to bridging the gap between the two worlds of society and policework. That and I think he really likes her company! These stories are fun, quick reads that keep me guessing. That and who doesn't love a cozy mystery set in merry old England? Follow the group around the country as they search for clues, question suspects and find themselves in often times dangerous situations all in an effort to find the elusive killer who may be looking for them next. Happy Reading!

Revenge is a dish best served cold

A good read but needs proofing. The free attitude has been toned down in this one and I think it makes for a better read. A nice plot full of revenue and murder plus some twists that you will not be expecting.
She and the Inspector have been seeing each other for some time now and her membership of the PLC has provided her with some new friends. But she must admit that she's feeling a bit bored. However when a woman's body turns up on the steps of Parliament it is shocking. Her handbag identifies as the sister of one of the senior members of the club. Then to top it off a ransom demand, the identity of the dead woman revealed and the money taken. Who is behind the plan? What is their objective?

The first book wasn’t great, but I thought I would give the series another chance before giving up completely.
Julia could be a decent character, although I could have done without her infatuation with Inspector Gibbs. My problem with the books is they seem so superficial and for me, they are forgotten as soon as I have finished.

When a woman turns up dead on the steps of a public building carrying the ID of the club president's sister, things take a nasty turn for our hero. Meredith was seeing fighting with her wild sister that morning and is prime suspect. Interesting developments for these new characters.

Love your books

Story time. . . . .Romance and mystery. Great combination. I'm not a spoiler alert person. So sometimes writing reviews is hard. I just know that if you like clean interesting mysteries. These are a must.

Fun little mystery

I am enjoying getting to know Julia as she solves mysteries. She is a very daring character that brings excitement to this book series.
