Note - this book is offered free to all readers who sign up to Gregg's email newsletter (which is also a lot of fun). You can find it at www.greggdunnett.co.ukWhen a six-year-old child picks up a mysterious letter left on a park bench, she discovers a confession from a man who claims to have spent his entire life committing murder after murder after murder. It’s almost certainly the ravings of a fantasist, but DI Beth Jordan is the undervalued detective sent in to make sure. Yet when she’s able to connect the few actual details in the text to real-life cases, Jordan has the opportunity to solve crimes that have baffled her colleagues for decades.

But there’s a reason why the killer is confessing now – and it’s not to give himself up. As more letters are discovered it becomes clear he is planning one last, terrible murder. Jordan is forced to dive deep into the killer’s mind to identify him before he can strike. But at the same time, the killer is studying her right back, using her to find the name of his final victim.

Because – in this twisted and dark novella – the dividing line between good and evil, right and wrong, is far less clear than it might first appear.

Can DI Jordan discover the real reason why he kills, before it’s too late?

And just whose name is next on the killer’s list?

Killing Kind is a fast moving and totally absorbing novella with a killer twist, from US and UK bestselling mystery and suspense writer Gregg Dunnett.

Gregg Dunnett

Gregg Dunnett is a British author writing psychological thrillers and stories about travel and adventure, usually with a connection to the coast or to the oceans. Before turning to novels he worked as a journalist for ten years on a windsurfing magazine, briefly owned a sailing school in Egypt, taught English in Thailand, Portugal, Turkey and Italy, taught sailing in Greece and Spain, and also had several rather duller jobs along the way.

His brother is the adventurer Jono Dunnett who in 2015 windsurfed alone and unsupported around the entire coastline of Great Britain, and who is currently windsurfing around the coastline of Europe.

Gregg lives in Bournemouth on the south coast of England with his partner Maria. They have two young children, Alba and Rafa, for whom the phrase “Daddy's working” has absolutely no effect.

Gregg's debut novel was an Amazon top 100 best seller in the UK and was downloaded over a quarter of a million times.

Gregg on why he writes:

"I’ve always wanted to do two things in life, to write, and to have adventures. When I was a kid I imagined grand affairs. Kayaking across Canada, cycling to Australia. Whole summers in the Arctic. Did it happen? Well, partly.

I’ve been lucky, I spent some years abroad teaching English. I worked in sailing schools in Greece and Spain. I really lucked out with a job testing windsurfing boards for the magazine I grew up reading. I made a questionable decision (ok, a bad decision) to buy a windsurfing centre in Egypt. I’ve also done my fair share of less exciting jobs. Packing and stacking potatoes on a farm, which got me fitter than I’ve ever been in my life. I did a few years in local government which taught me that people really do have meetings that result only in the need for more meetings, and they really do take all afternoon. I spent a pleasant few months in a giant book warehouse, where I would deliberately get lost among the miles of shelves unpacking travel guides and daydreaming. I’ve done a bit of writing too, at least I learned how to write. Boards Magazine isn’t well known (it doesn’t even exist today) but it did have a reputation for being well written and I shoe-horned articles in my own gonzo journalism style on some topics with the most tenuous of links to windsurfing. But the real adventures never came. Nor did the real writing.

Then, in 2015, my brother announced he was going to become the first person to windsurf alone around Great Britain. I don’t know why. Apparently it was something he’d always wanted to do (news to me). It was a proper adventure. It was dangerous, it was exciting. Even before he set off he was interviewed on TV, in the papers etc... Some people thought he was reckless, some thought he was inspirational. Lots of people thought he’d fail.

But he didn’t. He made it around. He even sailed solo from Wales to Ireland, the first to make the crossing without the aid of a safety boat. I was lucky enough to be involved in a planning level, and take part in a few training sails, and the last leg of the trip. But he did ninety nine percent of it on his own. One step at a time, just getting on with it. That was quite inspiring.

In a way it inspired me to pull my finger out. I’d been writing novels - or trying to write novels - then for a few years. But it was touch and go as to whether I was going to be one of those ‘writers’ with a half-finished novel lost on a hard drive somewhere, rather than someone who might actually manage to finish the job.

I’ve now got two lovely, highly demanding children, so real adventures are hard right now. I still try to get away when I can for nights out in the wilds rough camping, surf trips sleeping in the van, windsurfing when the big storms come. I love adventures with the kids too.

I hope in time to get around to a few real adventures. I want to sail across an ocean. I want to bike across a continent. I definitely want to spend more time surfing empty waves.

A letter left on a park bench and found by a child, a letter chronicling a serial killer’s journey. Now that’s attention grabbing. Now the race is on to find this man, good thing he’s so willing to leave clues behind. A fun story that yes, utilizes a certain beloved tv serial killer’s MO, but puts an original spin on it. Some people are just the killing kind.
I really enjoy Dunnett’s writing, the man knows how to write a properly thrilling thriller and deserves to be more well known. This novella isn’t actually a perfectly good indicator of the quality of his work, but it’ll give you some idea. You can get it for free as I did, just for signing up to Dunnett’s newsletter. Entertaining quick read. Recommended.

I am really enjoying Gregg Dunnett’s writing recently!! I zipped right through this engaging and twisty novella this afternoon — and loved it! The premise was so intriguing with mysterious notes being left by a possible serial killer.

And as the notes reveal more and more about unsolved decades-old murders, we are left wondering why this person would be reaching out to the police after all this time. The answers we get are shocking, and that ending is oh-so satisfying!! Fans of the series DEXTER will love this one I think!!

3 Estrellas!

Entertainingly clever novella from Dunnett who never seems to disappoint. Someone is leaving notes on park benches supposedly recounting their murderous history and the police set off in search of the apparent killer while trying to verify if the murders actually happened and, if so, whether the writer actually committed them. Solid writing propels this one to a nifty conclusion with a neat little twist thrown in. 3.5 starts bumped to 4 for the quality of writing and satisfying ending.

Engancha desde las primeras líneas y podría ser un buen libro ya que se basa en una buena historia, pero al ser tan corto todo se ve precipitado y por otro lado no me creo esa clase de "percepción"..

Wow this was a serial killer audiobook from the author. It wasn’t terribly long, but kept my attention. It was a different storyline than most books of this genre. The ending was totally a shock to me.
I received this from the author through BookFunnel.
That did not affect my honest review.
Note at the end from author said was using AI for the voice. I thought it was quite pleasant.

I see I also have the regular ebook as well. But I listened and reviewed the audio AI version

I really enjoyed this short thriller. It only took a couple of hours to read but the plot was intriguing and a real page-turner. It's not long enough for the characters to be fully developed but that somehow adds to the mystery and helps the fast pace of the storyline. I even ended up sympathising with the antagonist towards the end - and I will never walk a cliff path again!!
Perhaps this could be a stepping stone to a full length Beth Jordan novel? She's a likeable character and I'd love to read more about her.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella thriller. It was fast-paced and gripping with new developments on each page. It was an entertaining and enjoyable quick read.

I have read other books by Gregg Dunnett and have never been disappointed. He creates intriguing stories with fascinating characters that keep the reader swiftly turning pages. He gives just enough clues but never gives away the plot until the end. His closure is sometimes shocking but always creative.

I look forward to more books by this talented author.

A great short read.
This story is of a letter left on a park bench which is found by a child playing whist her mum talked to a friend. After informing her mum she rings the police as the letter is chronicling a serial killer’s journey. It is a fast-paced and gripping story with new developments on each page. I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller, and it was a very entertaining and enjoyable quick read.

I was lucky enough to proof read this story. Initially I enjoyed the story but wasn’t ‘wowed’ by it. I don’t usually read short stories and maybe it was the lack of character depth that I found frustrating. However, the more I thought about this book after finishing it, the more I realised what a clever plot it was. This will only take a few hours of your time, but the story will stick in your mind.

A great little novella if you are in between books or don't have much time. A serial killer is on the loose, taunting police with his previous crimes by leaving confessions on benches around London. Officer Beth Jordan is part of the team trying to track him down and figure out the reason for his confessions.

Another Great read from Dunnett

As a short Story, I couldn't put it down. I wish it was longer. I kept wanting to learn more of the main character, Colin. Definitely a page turner. Just like Greg's book 'The wave at hanging rock' it surprises you at the end.

I read the novella Killing Kind on a short flight from Oakland to Salt Lake City.

What a creepy, riveting, suspenseful good read. It had me right out of the gate when a young girl finds a gruesome confessional letter in the park.

Highly recommend.
