In Fern Michaels's extraordinary, inspiring New York Times bestseller, an overweight woman sets out to improve her life by losing fifty-five pounds -- and ends up changing much more than her dress size!
Rosie Gardener fell under the spell of handsome Kent Bliss, and not even her best friend Vickie could persuade her that her fiancé was a two-timing cad. Now it's her third wedding anniversary, and Rosie, fed up with Kent's mistreatment, realizes her estranged best friend was right. But the day after kicking Kent out and beginning a diet and exercise regime, Rosie experiences another life-changing event: she wins $302 million in the Wonderball lottery. Now with Kent lurking in the shadows to claim a share of her money, Rosie needs her friends more than ever. As she works out under the eye of sexy personal trainer Jack Silver, a stronger new Rosie emerges -- a woman who wants to learn to trust love once again. Can she keep her vow not to be stopped by Kent's bitterness and her own self-doubts and jump into life with a passion she didn't know she possessed?
Fern Michaels isn’t a person. I’m not sure she’s an entity either since an entity is something with separate existence. Fern Michaels® is what I DO. Me, Mary Ruth Kuczkir. Growing up in Hastings, Pennsylvania, I was called Ruth. I became Mary when I entered the business world where first names were the order of the day. To this day, family and friends call me Dink, a name my father gave me when I was born because according to him I was ‘a dinky little thing’ weighing in at four and a half pounds. However, I answer to Fern since people are more comfortable with a name they can pronounce.
As they say, the past is prologue. I grew up, got a job, got married, had five kids. When my youngest went off to Kindergarten, my husband told me to get off my ass and get a job. Those were his exact words. I didn’t know how to do anything except be a wife and mother. I was also a voracious reader having cut my teeth on The Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Cherry Ames and the like. The library was a magical place for me. It still is to this day. Rather than face the outside world with no skills, I decided to write a book. For some reason that didn’t intimidate me. As my husband said at the time, stupid is as stupid does. Guess what, I don’t have that husband any more. Guess what else! I wrote 99 books, most of them New York Times Best Sellers.
Moving right along here . . . Several years ago I left Ballantine Books, parted company with my agent, sold my house in New Jersey that I had lived in all my married life and in 1993 moved to South Carolina. I figured if I was going to go through trauma let it be all at one time. It was a breeze. The kids were all on their own at that point. The dump was a 300 year old plantation house that is listed in the National Registry that I remodeled. Today it is beyond belief as are the gardens and the equally old Angel Oaks that drip Spanish moss. Unfortunately, I could not get my ghost to relocate. This ghost has been documented by previous owners. Mary Margaret as we call her, is “a friendly”. She is also mischievous. It took me two weeks to figure out that she didn’t like my coffee cups. They would slide off the table or counter or else they’d break in the dishwasher. I bought red checkered ones. All are intact as of this writing. She moves pillows from one room to the other and she stops all the clocks in the house at 9:10 in the a.m. at least once a week. When the Azaleas are in bloom, and only then, I find blooms on my night stand. I have this glorious front porch and during the warm months I see my swing moving early in the morning when the air is still and again late in the day. She doesn’t spook the dogs. I always know when she’s around because the five of them line up and look like they’re at a tennis match. As of this writing we’re co-habiting nicely.
Most writers love what they do and I’m no exception. I love it when I get a germ of an idea and get it down on paper. I love breathing life into my characters. I love writing about women who persevere and prevail because that’s what I had to do to get to this point in time. It’s another way of saying it doesn’t matter where you’ve been, what matters is where you’re going and how you get there. The day I finally prevailed was the day I was inducted into the New Jersey Literary Hall of Fame. For me it was an awesome day and there are no words to describe it. I’ve been telling stories and scribbling for 37 years. I hope I can continue for another 37 years. It wasn’t easy during some of those years. As I said, I had to persevere. My old Polish grandmother said something to me when I was little that I never forgot. She said when God is good to you, you have to give back. For a while I didn’t know how to do that. When I finally figured it out I set up The Fern Michaels® Foundation.
I love Fern Michaels, and collect all of her books. This one,is for all the women who have ever felt like they were ugly ducklings, and mostly because of some jerk man who made them feel that way, left them or cheated and then left them, for someone the man thought was prettier than their wife. This woman here, does a complete 360,and when it comes time for her husband to see her,he really doesn't recognize her,and when he does,he once again tries to make her feel badly, but, she has changed so much that he never does and she never lets him. She perseveres which is something we women can do,if we only have the courage to do it.
This book is outstanding and moving!!! I'm a heavyset girl and after reading the inspiring book I lost 50 pounds!!! I recommend this book to anyone that needs to be lifted and encourged to become a better them!!! Love Fern Michaels she is a brillent writer!!!
Vicki Winters told her best friend, Rosalie Gardener, that her fiancee, Kent Bliss, was a jerk and that she shouldn't marry him. Rosie wanted to get married and they got into a big fight. Vicki took a job as companion to Adeline Simmons. Adeline was dying and wanted to go visit the places in Europe that she had been with her deceased husband before she died. Vicki was on her way to tell Rosie goodbye when she stopped at a fast food place and saw Kent with another woman. She left before he saw her and she went to see Rosie. She tried one more time to convince Rosie not to marry Kent but didn't tell her she had seen him with another woman. Rosie was convinced that Vicki was jealous and was upset that Vicki was leaving before her wedding. Vickie and Rosie had been best friends for as long as they could remember. They started elementary school together and had started a business that they ran together. It was now three years after she married and Rosie knew that she had made a mistake. Kent stopped sleeping with her as soon as they returned from their honeymoon. Kent ran around spending her money on cars, boats and other women. He worked about an hour a day at a real estate agency. On their third anniversary Rosie finally had enough. She told Kent to be home for dinner or he would be sorry. He showed up around 10:30. Rosie had her housekeeper and friend, Luna Mae Luna (not her real name) pack up Kent's clothes in black garbage bags. When he got home Luna also took the distributor off his Porsche. She ordered Kent out of the house and informed him that he would have to leave the car, she was going to sell it along with his boat. Kent was furious but convinced that she didn't really mean what she saying. Rosie had stopped by to get gas earlier that day on her anniversary and the morning of the lottery drawing. The attendant purchased five tickets for Rosie. Rosie found out the next day that one of the tickets was the winning ticked for $302 million. She told Luna and then said that she would burn the ticket before she would share any of it with Kent. She put the ticket under the cushion of the rocking chair in the guest room. Rosie had family money and her business made close to five hundred thousand a year. Rosie didn't need money but Kent was forced to move into Days Inn and use his company's car. He was living on an advance from his real estate sales. He wasn't used to working and he found out from the gas attendant that Rosie had purchased the winning lottery ticket. He confronted Rosie but she showed him five tickets that weren't winners. One of the tickets was Luna Mae's. Kent had already found another woman, Heather, to take care of him. Her father owned a car dealership and she provided him with a cell phone and a car. Vicki came back to town after Adeline passed away. Adeline had left her mansion to Vicki. They bumped into each other and Rosie told her that her marriage was over. She apologized to Vicki and asked her to come back to work with her. Their business was collecting weeds and varnishing them to make arrangements and pictures and sell them over the internet. Vicki agreed and they used the mansion to store the weeds and prepare the items they sold. Rosie was already chubby before she married but she had put on fifty five pounds during her three years of marriage. Kent constantly put her down and she was miserable. She went on a diet and hired a physical trainer. Rosie didn't know that Jack Silver was the owner of a chain of work out centers. She thought he was just a personal trainer. They became friends and Jack was attracted to her but Rosie didn't trust him and kept him at arms length. She was attracted to him but fought it. Three months after she threw Kent out, she filed for a divorce. One weekend, Vicki flew back to Paris where she had left her fiancee. She was planning on getting married as soon as her fiancee could move to the states. Luna Mae had gone away for the weekend too. She came back and told Rosie that she was leaving to get married too. Rosie found a dog hiding under her car one day when it was raining. She brought him home and named him Buddy. He was now her guard dog. She also had an alarm system put in her house. Kent was convinced that Rosie had the winning ticket and started another affair with a woman named Hillary. She was also married and her husband ran an electronics company. He went to her house and took what he needed to bypass Rosie's alarm system. He messed up the house and stole money from both Rosie and Luna. He made a mess but never saw the ticket under the rocker cushion. Jack had asked Rosie to enter a triathlon that was sponsored by his health club. He came by one morning with a picnic lunch packed and took Rosie to his house to practice rowing in a canoe for the triathlon. Heather had a house next door to Jack's and he found out that Rosie was at Jack's place. He got Heather drunk so she passed out and went over to Jack's place and broke into his car and stole Rosie's money and Jack's gun. Luna Mae was getting married and left. Rosie was upset and felt that Luna Mae was making a mistake like she had but she didn't fight with her and told Luna that she could come back at any time. Rosie wasn't going to replace her. She was a stronger person now and she could handle living alone. She hoped that Luna Mae would return. Kent was still juggling both Heather and Hillary but Hillary told the police that Jack was with her at her place when Jack's gun was stolen. Kent used that excuse as a reason to break up with her. He started to get very nervous and rethink what he had done in stealing the gun. He went back to Jack's house on the pretense of selling the house on the other side. He tried to go through Jack's property to throw the gun in the river but the wind blew him back out into the roadway, twice. He left because he was scared that the house was haunted. He had lost both his shoes and left without them and without disposing of the gun. Kent started thinking about his life and how low he had fallen to steal a gun and be in trouble with the law. He decided to also enter the triathlon and started to work out for it in earnest. Kent went to Vicki and asked her to tell Rosie that he wanted to talk to her. Rosie agreed and then decided to make an agreement with Kent. If Rosie won the race, she would take full possession of the lottery winnings. If Kent won, he would get half the money and half of his portion would be donated to charity. Kent agreed, to the surprise of Rosie. A few days before the race, Luna Mae surprised Rosie and returned home with her new husband. It turned out that he really loved Luna Mae and he had a lot of money that he had put away but didn't live like he was well off. He didn't tell Luna Mae until after they were married because he didn't want anyone to know and marry him for his money. Rosie was nervous with the race only days away and she got a cramp in her leg. Luna Mae's husband had a balm that he rubbed into her leg and it helped her legs heal before the race. The weather turned bad and it was pouring down rain. Jack called and told her that they were reversing the order of the three events. The canoeing would be first and then the bike ride and the run. He had called some of the other participants and they didn't want to cancel or postpone the event. Rosie went to the river and won the canoe portion. Vicki and Luna Mae had dry shoes and socks waiting. She wasn't the first to start the bike ride but the dry clothes helped her to catch up and lead the bicycle portion too. The run was last and again she was given dry clothes to change into. She was running pretty evenly with Kent and he went down. His knee had given out. He told Rosie that they were the only ones left in the race. The others had all given up due to circumstances caused by the bad weather. Rosie told Kent that she couldn't go any further and he told her that she had to finish so that she could get an ambulance to come pick him up. There was still about three quarters of a mile left. Rosie got up and somehow found the strength to finish and win the race. She sent an ambulance to pick up Kent and take him to the hospital for surgery. Jack had proposed to Rosie and they were moving into his house on the river. She went to see Kent and gave him some of the lottery winnings. Kent was surprised but very happy. He told Rosie that he was sorry for everything he had put her through and he was leaving town. Rosie went to Jack's house on the river and talked to his deceased wife. Jack had buried her ashes under a tree there and the wind picked up and blew the swing on the tree as high as it could go. Jack said that it was Mary's way of telling her that she approved of her. Rosie took that as a good sign. She knew that she was finally with someone who loved her and they would be happy and raise a family together.
Short and sweet. I'm not a fan of "fade to black" intimacy normally, but I think this story was told well enough that it was unnecessary to tarnish the "sweetness" in the new love that flourishes....both for herself and for Jack.
the author's name is Fern Michael's the book title is pretty women i would recommend that you do not read this book because it will make you seem like your reading the same page over and over again this book is not a good book i would want you to read a book that brings out the best in you the characters in this story are Rosie and ken and lun may Rosie Gardener fell under the spell of handsome Kent Bliss, and not even her best friend Vickie could persuade her that her fiance was a two-timing cad. Now it's her third wedding anniversary, and Rosie, fed up with Kent's mistreatment, realizes her estranged best friend was right. This novel was totally a different read, I do not usually immerse myself in this type of book but I enjoyed it as a change. In my view, this is a real Chick book and should be in the category of Harlequin Romance or maybe Danielle Steel....or any others in the same line.
On her wedding anniversary fed up with her husband's mistreatment, the heroine kicks him out and begins a diet and exercise regime, learns to trust love again and jump into life with a passion.
It is an inspiring tail of an overweight woman sets out to improve her life and ends up changing much more than her dress size. Oh yes folks, she does get her man at the end....a handsome, lovely and rich one too .... every woman's fantasy....lol
good story about turning your life around, but it got kind of dull in the end. at first I really thought that there is going to be some action and all but nope everything changed in the last chapter. don't regret reading it but will not think about reading it again.
I picked up this book after the Goodreads recommendations. The summary was gripping like all the chicklit stories and I have a weakness for chicklits. Its uplifting and inspiring with a lots of romance. I wanted to read about the weight loss regime and the happy life after that. But I was quite disappointed.
Rosie is a wealthy girl who had inherited her parents mansions, has a house keeper and doting friend. She is described as some one with weight problems. She is a size 14. I am size 14 and I don't have 9 rolls of fat. And I certainly don't feel sorry in anyway. Life happens. She bought herself a husband and I don't know why she cannot kick him out of her life a lot before. Suddenly it happens. I mean he has this repulsive attitude towards her always and she suddenly grows a spine one day.
The character development of Rosie could have been a little better. Then there is Jack and he is wealthy too. Just Rosie doesn't know about it (duh!). There is a spark between them and I would want to experience more of it, like Nora Roberts or Harlequin Books. This is a Romance novel isn't it? There are no stolen glances, electric touches, just bland.
And what about the health regime. I was a fool looking to be inspired. This lady has a housekeeper, a personal trainer, has won a lottery ticket, has kicked her wretched husband and yet whines and complaints about life. I am not sure what makes a blessed person. After a few months of training she participates in the triathlon and she wins (rolling my eyes). She competes against a navy SEAL and WON!! (Did I miss something?). Maybe the author got inspired watching some Bollywood crap.
Then there is Kent, her ex husband. He goes from being this bad womaniser to a good person. I don't know what the author was thinking about this character. It is not developed properly. Suddenly he turns around and has a halo above his head. I mean people do change but there is no background for such an important change. Its like how Tom Cruise says in Jerry McGuire movie, "I ate some bad pizza, went to bed and grew a conscience."
I am an Indian, however I have stayed in the States. I know the floral arrangements are a big deal there. There are florist who are very popular for their flowers and arrangements. But I hadn't heard about these weed decorations. Agreed there are few here and there in the internet but I am not sure if that would make a very lucrative and thriving business as described. I have no idea. I mean why can't one walk around pick some and do the arrangements themselves? Why spend a $50 on 40 cents worth piece. It boggles my mind. Any way moving on..
There is this eerie.. I'm sorry, magical part about the tree. Its haunted with Jack's wife spirit. But the tree and Rosie are best friends. I don't know why the author has thrown in a dash of paranormal. It doesn't sit well with the story and there is no role for the tree other than confront Kent.
Well the bottom line is I wasted 300 rupees. I wouldn't recommend it to any one. This is my first and probably the last of Fern Michael's book.
I would give 0 stars if I could. Super fatphobic. Without a doubt the worst book I’ve ever read. I never DNF books, but I was about to after the first chapter. Only reason I muddled through was because it had been recommended by a friend and I needed to see if there was any redeeming quality (there wasn’t). Or perhaps it was my masochistic side. Or perhaps because it was fun to read the worst parts aloud to my husband and make fun of it together.
Terrible writing. Characters would speak in huge paragraphs and one block of ONE characters dialogue would frequently take up half a page and sometimes almost the whole page. So unnatural and not the way normal people speak. I also don’t think this author has ever heard of the “show don’t tell” principle because everything you found out in the book was because a character was exposition dumping in their huge monologues.
There were details that were introduced almost at the end of the novel that didn’t seem to have any bearing on the plot. It didn’t seem well planned and almost like the author just turned in her first draft?
By far the worst part for me was the rampant fatphobia throughout the whole thing. This would be incredibly triggering for someone with an eating disorder. The entire premise of the book rests on this woman losing weight and it’s only when she starts to lose weight that she becomes worthy of love and gets the guy. Her friends say awful things to her about her weight. It perpetuates every harmful diet culture trope, glamorizes “forgetting to eat” and working out extra hard when she “cheats” on her diet. It was just so gross.
I tried rushing through it to get it over with, but I think I was slowed down by all the eye rolling I was doing.
A co-worker recommended Fern Michaels to me and thought I would give Pretty Woman a read before jumping into an entire series by the author. I really wanted to like the book but glad it was a short one. It’s just my opinion but I can’t tell you the number of times I rolled my eyes at all the good luck that fell into the main character’s lap in the span of time the book took place. I really thought the book was going to take a different path but after kicking her worthless husband out, winning the lottery (while already having money) then falling for her personal trainer (and him falling for her) only 3 months after kicking her husband out it just couldn’t get any worse, but alas it did.
Good for her for sticking up for herself, losing the weight for herself and rekindling her friendship with her best friend but when she trained for 3 months and won a triathlon, it was a bit much. Then to top it all, her worthless husband who treated her like garbage and cheated for years on her wakes up all of a sudden and decides not to be a jerk anymore and doesn’t want the lottery money. Huh? Sorry to all the Fern Michaels fans but I want my 4 hours back.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Rosie is a sad, overweight wife of a cheating husband. Kent doesn't care about her, emotionally abuses her and uses all her money without contributing a dime. Rosie finally grows a spine and kicks the jerk out, and then decides she's going to lose weight. She'll only be happy when she's not fat anymore, then she'll be pretty.
Holy. Pile. Of. Crap.
The WHOLE book is Rosie training and running and eating less and less and falling for her trainer, Jack.
Rosie literally says in her inner monologue that once she loses weight, then she'll be a pretty woman.
Fern Michaels, I have never read anything as offensively obsessed with calling a character fat in my whole life.
Rosie is only called beautiful and happy looking after she's trained herself into oblivion. Oh, and her philandering idiot husband calls her pretty and asks for a kiss.
Pure schmaltz ....sooo predictable , laughable, and unrealistic —a real exercise in “suspend disbelief” (too much emphasis on creating multiple sub plots and not enough actually creating believability ....life is not full of multiple victories for everything we want). Could have done without counting watermelon seeds. The major character and her love interest were a “stock flat characters” (Can we say, you don’t need to read the book to know the resolution?) Other characters balanced her out making the book more enjoyable especially her dynamic soon to be ex husband...he was well developed as was the housekeeper ... .Was a great fluff book...I enjoy Fern Michael’s books as a break from the Baldacci, DeMille, Patterson nail biters .
Listened to this one on audiobook. I was doing a lot of driving and it was cheap...
This isn’t really my type of book normally ... but parts of the plot seemed pretty ridiculous, and poorly researched too ... for example, the triathlon was crazily lopsided (if you’ve ever tried all 3 sports you’d instantly know what I mean), and I remember a weight/size discrepancy as well ... things like that.
By the end I kept with it more because I didn’t have another book and the story had become silly enough to return back into the realm of entertainment.
Still, I wouldn’t suggest you waste your time on it...
I never read these kinds of books and here's why: 1. the main chatector cried about everything! oh my good Lord! stop crying and acting like s damn drama queen all the time! 2. spoiler- you gave half the money to HIM, really?!?! what the actual hell in wrong with you??? 3. a ghost tree? Where the hell did that ever fit in? 4. if your fat men only want you four your money so hire a personal trainer and win a triathlon. 🖕 5. the love story just wasn't believable.
Enjoyed this book about Rosie Gardener. She is one wonderful lady and did something that was so hard to do, but the right thing to do when someone does not love you. I'm glad she found her soulmate. The book was very interesting and had some nice surprises in it. She had two great friends, Vickie Winters who she had a business with and had a falling out with , but she came back into her life again. Life is short, and I'm glad they became friends again. Also her Housekeeper and close friend Luna Mae. She is one great friend to have in your life.
Rosie is a wealthy, overweight woman. She is married to a man who wants only her money. He verbally abuses her, cheats on her, and uses her. When he forgets their 3rd wedding anniversary, she kicks him out. This starts the story. He wants his good life back. And to top it off, Rosie wins a $302 million dollar lottery. He really wants his half of that money. The story starts out strong but ends up nice and sweet with them ending amicably. During the story, Rosie decides to lose weight by dieting and exercising and the author takes the reader along that route with her.
What a spell binding book! Enjoyed every word and minute it took to find out what happened. Interesting characters, well developed plot. A real page turner. Good love story! Fascinating, in it for himself "bad" guy. Loved the Senior Citizens and the house keeper. Sorry the book is finished as would like to read more about Rosie who made such a sensational turn around with her life!!
Oh, yes, Fern Michaels, you did it with this book! This is the best of the books you’ve written, & I’ve read a number of your books. Rosie persevered, & she changed her life & the lives of many people in all that she did. I could relate to Rosie, & she deserves the title of Pretty Woman! Plus, she was super generous to forgive her ex-husband & sharing her good fortune with him. Amazing woman! She makes me feel like a Pretty Woman, too.
Loved the characters - Rosie Gardner who overcame her weight gain by committing herself to exercise and healthy eating. Loved Luna Mae who took care of her as a child. Loved the fact that she and Vickie made amends even though they were estranged for 3 years. Loved all the senior citizens who helped them in the business and most importantly Jack who loved Rosie as soon as he met her. Was a bit surprised how Kent changed around his character from the sleaze ball he was.
This was an easy feel good book to read this week. Just what I needed. Rosie is a wealthy young lady stuck in a worthless marriage. Her husband spends her money foolishly on himself & other women. This is the story of how Rosie becomes stronger emotionally & physically too. Romance, discipline, dieting, friendship & marriage are all included in this uplifting story. Well done, Fern Michaels......
I enjoyed this book for the most part and probably would have given it 4 stars but I thought the ending was ridiculous. While it was a happy ending for Rosie and Jack, the fact that the author chose to not have a narcissistic creep be punished for his criminal acts, but rather suddenly turned him into a nice guy, who was rewarded in several ways, really put me off.
