Brad Anderson is an American cartoonist. He graduated from Brocton Central School in Brocton, New York in 1943. He is best known for creating the comic strip Marmaduke in 1955, which he continues to draw to this day. One of his favorite inclusions in his comics was the old Cave's Meat Market in Brocton, NY. There were several cartoons dedicated to Cave's and to Marmaduke running away from the store with items he had retrieved. He was also involved in the comic strip Grandpa's Boy, which ran from 1955 through 1980. He received the National Cartoonists Society Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award for Marmaduke in 1978.
The repetitive nature of the themes in Marmaduke was recently parodied in the satirical paper The Onion.
I am a lover of dogs and a fan of comic strips. Raising them has made me more patient, loving and caring. As a kid, I read the Marmaduke series with rarely a fail. I happened upon this book at the doctor's office this past week. I read through this collection and so memories came back. I also chuckled and laughed aloud. This is a solid collection of classic Marmaduke comic strips.
Not that funny, but still pleasant to flip through.
I chose my favorite cartoon from the book, and showed it to my daughters and my wife. They said they didn't get it, so I explained it and they still looked at me blankly.
(The cartoon shows an unknown, nondescript couple, man and wife, in their driveway, opening the door on the rear of their camper vehicle. The open door reveals that Marmaduke is sitting inside the camper unit. The caption reads "Do you remember the name of the family who had the big dog with them at the campground?")
Maybe this is something that only works if you were there all those years ago when these cartoons were new.
A cute book full of clever cartoons about everyone's favorite cartoon Great Dane. Actually my first book of cartoons I read about Marmaduke, but they're very cute, and funny! I really enjoyed it.
