3 stars... but only for Reed!
This is the sequel to Waiting on the Sidelines and it picks up right where the first book left off, except we're finally able to read it from Reed's point of view as well.
So to be honest... all three stars here belong to Reed. He was no longer a hormonal adolescent, and was growing up from a cocky, naive College student into a man. And he finally had all his shit together. Ms. Scott did well with this one!
But Nolan was a bitter disappointment. Gone was the Nolan from the first book. Here we were introduced to an incredibly insecure heroine, who was suffering from anxiety and depression for 90% of the book and at the same time dealing with a little bit of post traumatic stress disorder. And what's worse: she just wasn't that likeable. She was passive, judgemental, and totally dependant. And I'm sorry to say, but I just want more from my heroines. I wanted to love her as much as the guy does. But instead, Nolan just ruined the book for me. (But on the upside, she inspired a new shelf category!)
In fact, when I went back to read the first chapter of WOTS to remind myself how Nolan started off (witty, sporty, observant, chatty, strong) I realised that the Nolan we see in this second installment is ENTIRELY DIFFERENT. In fact, she has become the polar opposite (boring, lethargic, ignorant, introverted, and weak).
Ginger Scott is a great writer... and I loved Waiting on the Sidelines, but this sequel just didn't measure up. Reed was FANTASTIC though and I'm glad I got to see him grow into a man.
I'd recommend this book only to die-hard fans of GS and the series. Otherwise, it's probably best to give it a miss. The first book was awesome enough.
