When the publisher chose the title, what they wanted to convey is that Mahad was a struggle to reclaim our humanity - a struggle that is launched everyday.. even now. This is a really good title for a book that juxtaposes that struggle.. one that Babasaheb Ambedkar launched with the Mahad agitation and countless others have launched before him and even after him; with that launched by charlatans and self-proclaimed mahatmas.. simply to glorify their own legacy. But the book is not limited to that comparison alone; it evaluates the need for such a struggle and justifies it.
What usually gets a single line mention in most textbooks has been expanded by Bojja Tharakam into a beautiful examination of our struggles and the motives behind them.. managing to be both a lesson for us on our past and legacy of our ancestors who fought against a caste society that reduced them to a sub-human existence and also a blueprint for the future struggles yet to come.
This book is required reading for us who have been indoctrinated by this brahminical empire into never realising its importance.
The book Bojja Tharakam takes you to the period of 1927 where the author tries to analyse both Dandi March and Mahad March. The Book can be condensed to the following lines- Mahad was for water and Dandi was for salt-both have the goal of right to freedom. One against civil society and one against foreign government .one human cause and second a political strategy .ambedkar biography Dhananjay keer. Gandhi began his satyagraha as a form of struggle right from a march from Transvaal into natal, against discriminatory tax against indentured labour. Salt had not been imported into India before British monopoly stifled local production in favour of imports from the home country. In 1885 a salt commission recommended the taxing of Indian salt to assist the sale of British salt. salt act later. Without a salt, a man may die but without dignity, he is not a human being at all. Gandhi has somewhat had a paternalistic view of Women. Mahadev Desai biographer of Gandhi writes about the number of marchers in Dandi 79. The books give you clear goals of both events and how one was publicised and orchestrated even though it was more in a peaceful environment, whereas Mahad Satyagraha was more in a Hostile environment and it is still ignored today despite its broad goals. The writer even points to the fact that how the photo of violating salt law in Dandi March was taken in some other village.

The Dandi march is taught with much vigour in schools and colleges but almost no professor or teacher would mention the Mahad march, which holds much more significance than Dandi in almost any way you look at it. The Dandi march was a well organised, dare I say orchestrated, event which mostly comprised of upper caste, upper-class families marching with the very intention of sending a message. Gandhi was even disappointed that he wasn't arrested.
The Mahad march, on the other hand, was a fight for basic survival. An entire community was denied access to drinking water. Ambedkar's march had faced strong opposition, mostly from fellow Indians, who even managed to attack people participating in the march. Caste was, as is today, a way bigger threat for people of this country than the British ever was.
Most of the people in India don't even know about this protest that lasted for more than 10 years, because it was shadowed under Gandhi's Dandi march. Some things and personalities of our past are worth critical thinking.
A short but deep side by side comparison of the Mahad Satyagraha and Dandi March. Truly, the struggle started at Mahad by Dr. Ambedkar continues to this day.
After reading this, you can’t help but also see the glaring performativity of the Dandi March. Gandhi certainly had good PR.
