The Washington Capitals are Stanley Cup Champions!
For the first time in franchise history, Lord Stanley's Cup is at last ALL OURS.
Every season begins with hope and optimism, but disappointing playoff exits in recent years coupled with significant roster turnover followed by a sluggish start to the new seasons and injuries to key players gave the Caps and their fans just cause for concern.
And then things started to click.
After Thanksgiving, Washington went 37-16-6 to claim first place in the division for the eighth time in 11 seasons. Up and down the roster, the Caps got contributions from veterans and newcomers on offense and defense. This way or that a key goal one night, a clutch save the next the Caps kept finding ways to pile up points and build momentum for the playoffs.
"We're going to do our thing," said team captain Alex Ovechkin. "And we re going to have success."
In the first round, the Capitals came back to oust Columbus. In the next round, they exacted revenge on Pittsburgh. In the conference final, Washington posted back-to-back shutouts to vanquish Tampa Bay and advance to the Stanley Cup Final, where the Vegas Golden Knights Cinderella story came to an end along with 44 years of longing for Caps fans.
The victory parade was a sea-of-red, sun-splashed lovefest, and the summer was made memorable both by homecoming celebrations with the Stanley Cup around the globe, as well as savvy front office transactions that promise to keep the Caps competing for the Cup for years to come.
