didn't know that a story surrounding gambling and casinos would entertain me this much?
the story follows baek hawon, a lone man who's buried in 4 billions worth of debt, who's currently working as a casino dealer to survive the everyday storm and kwon taeha, a rich chaebol son of a shipping company owner, who spends millions like it's a dime. the two gets tangled after a game of poker and taeha can't seem to pry himself away from the poor hawon (due to curiosity? familiarity? lust? interest? it's for you to find out)
throughout the first volume, I had not one time where I was bored of hawon's character. he's presented to us exactly how he was presented to taeha: calculating, fierce, sharp-tongued, and an insanely interesting character. not one boring moment inside of his mind and i liked being part of it. his nature as a dealer shaped his entire character and that's why he's able to survive in the bustling and hustling streets of macau.
taeha is also an interesting character. he keeps on pouring his random "tests" for hawon. you just cannot trust the guy. it's either he's blatantly calculating or he's making you feel like he isn't. an intelligent person like him is a perfect vessel for a spender. his chaebol background did not help too BUT taeha isn't the type to splurge without care. every single cent that comes out of his wallet is already calculated for something that favors him.
this volume didn't really dive much into their backgrounds, just a little dip, and we're left with an introduction to hawon's new life at sea. although I do have assumptions as to what their connection really are, it still left me with questions. excited to find out more in the next one!
been awhile since i read a kor novel. and it's quite a surprise that this novel has so many aspects that usually would throw me off (huge debt, financial gap, and overthinking mc) but i'm impressively intrigued by it regardless. the battle of wits and the mindgames between the two characters here are the highlight and the saving grace i figured. the mc's clever train of thoughts and his cold & calm demeanor surely a sweet taste on my tongue, it was dark and sexy and painfully rational & realistic (HOW TO WRITE SOMETHING LIKE THAT ASKING FOR A FRIEND). i love how the author slipped some ambiguity here and there without making it looking shallow. it's so charming.
