The hardest part of being ringmistress? Juggling my feelings for three men. Connor, my stubborn protector always battling his demons. Hunter, the dashing wolf shifter who sends my heart into overdrive. And Razvan, the dragon I wish I could stop thinking about. What was supposed to be a fun, lighthearted date turns into a shocking discovery about myself. I wasn’t ready for this, and I’m not sure I’m up for the responsibility this discovery brings me. I’m so consumed by the shifter visions in my head, I don’t realize how much Connor is hurting. He’s walking down a dark path and this time, I’m not sure if even I can save him. Step right up and take a front row seat to my heart breaking. Smoke and Mirrors is the third volume in the Harem of Freaks series, which should be read in order.
If you've gotten to book 3, then you know the type of series this is.
If you liked the previous books, you'll enjoy this one as well. If not, well, things don't really change here either.
Still, it was a good read. The plot thickens, to put it like that. We get more information (although still not enough, really) and yes, unfortunately, some more you're-an-idiot moments, but they're digestible enough not to ruin the read.
Holy freaking crap!!! That was some of the hottest sexy times I've ever read. We finally have a harem yall. I'm pretty sure there is one more to be added, but we are up to three now. And we got some group sexy times in this book.
I am very much loving this series, the romance, plot, and sexy times. Not to mention these covers are absolutely gorgeous. One thing is for sure though, I could not read these books in public. Even with reading my kindle, I'm sure people would guess the type of book I'm reading by all the blushing I feel myself doing.
Smoke and Mirrors is the third book within the Harem of Freaks series.
So far, we are still following the same four people from the previous books - Melody, Connor, Razvan and Hunter. Honestly, I'm not really sure how I feel about this one. Sure, I liked some parts but for most part? My eyes are sore from all the rolling they did. The only good outcome is we finally know what Melody is and that has been bugging me since book 1.
Other than that, is too much to ask for them to struggle at one freaking thing? Why is so easy for them to escape these buffoons? Like you all were hired to do one thing and then you are so easy to distract or take down? Why were you hired to begin with? I have questions and would like to speak to a manager.
Still having issues with this series and have just finish book three. It's too simplistic.for.my taste, it's got the bones of a very good series which I could see myself loving if there was more time on worldbuilding and character development. But the only part of the story which gets lots of pages is the sexy times. Even there we have a rushed feel to both the depth of attachment an time spent together. Example Melody now has three lovers Connor, Hunter nd Razvan now Connor (although he professes to love Melody) has no problem with th other men ............... Not through sexual inclination but because "they will be there for her when he inevitably let's her down"???? Hunter and Reagan are attracted to Melody because she is a Shaman (as such sacred to shifters) and shares a magical connection with them, does this mean they would feel the same.if Melody were seventy and aged instead of eighteen and beautiful? I very much doubt it, so for me their motivations are off then there's Hunters children Roo and Rennie who he is constantly leaving alone for.long periods of time though they are only six and eight, I swear the children are adorable and ought to play a bigger role. There are seven books in the series but.I'm unsure if I will.continue i know there is.fourth lover out there somewhere Melody is dreaming about him, hes tiger shifter (I think) trapped in highly unscrupulous circus so I think they will try to rescue him in the.next book so I may give it one.more go..........................
I think I'm done for a while. This can be fun, but I get so pissed off as well that it doesn't seem binge-worthy.
For starters, the books are really short. This isn't a complaint, except for the fact that half of the book is just offering context to the previous books. I'm reading the consecutively, and it feels like I'm wasting my time whenever I read a paragraph talking about something that, for me, just happened.
Then, we have the characters. I like them, but, at the same time, where's the maturity? Connor is 25, Raz is 21, and Hunter has an unknown age but has two kids. The oldest is 7. I believe that they should have an amount of emotional intelligence that they just don't show.
- Connor is always pissed off - Something crawled up Hunter's ass and died somewhere in this book and now he's being standoffish to everyone
Melody is 18, and while I can see (too clearly) that she has a lot of growth to go through, she is carrying this relationship on her back. How can she be surrounded by people who have more experience with trauma and relationships than her and still be the one doing the most?
This series could've been a longer book. Maybe it wouldn't have the same dynamic that it being a series offers, but it just feels like a bit of a waste of time.
I complained about the characters, but I do think that it's more related to the author wanting them to be that way then just writing and having them come up like that. The author acknowledges pretty well some of the things that bother me, so I feel like giving the rest of the series a shot in the near future.
Final thoughts are: I'm done with the main male characters bullshit. This should've been longer. There are too many recaps for such a short book.
I'm loving where this series is going, this book just adds more to it, picking up straight where the last book left off. More details, more background, more characters, more heartache, more love, more growing and building of relationships. I love how realistic it all feels, I really care about these characters and their story. I really loved it and am so looking forward to the next book.
Book 3 of the Harem of Freaks series and to be honest it fell a little flat for me compared to the first 2 😭
While I did enjoy many aspects of this book, I found Mel was getting on my nerves quite a lot. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for a super needy main female character 😂 We learn a bit more about her and her unique abilities. I loved getting more content with the shifters. I haven't read shifter romance before so I was definitely intrigued.
Overall this has been a fun series to read and I am looking forward to the next book after the cliffhanger ending and the possibility of another shifter coming on board!
4.4 stars. I’m really enjoying this series so far. I love all the different shifters and the new powers that the FMC is developing. So cool.
What’s bringing my score down is the little tantrums and silent treatment shit that all of the characters have gone through at least once now. I understand for some of them, but now it’s just getting a bit ridiculous and immature. And I’m getting frustrated by their bad communication skills.
Not enough to stop reading though. I believe we’re about to meet a new guy, and I wanna know what the hell crawled up the silent treatment giving guy’s ass.
Hopefully we get to a healthier place by the end of this series because this shit is annoying.
"Smoke and Mirrors" by Crystal Ash is a solid read with a mix of mystery and romance. The characters are intriguing, and the author's writing style keeps you engaged. However, the plot feels somewhat predictable, and there are moments when the story could have delved deeper into character development. Overall, it's an enjoyable book, but it doesn't quite reach the level of a four-star rating.
Third book from the Harem of Freaks series. Really enjoyed this one too. I love the 4 main characters. They have such great chemistry. Lots of spice, but also a lot of heart. This is a "why choose?"/"reverse harem" story and I love how those relationships have slowly developed throughout these first three books. Looking forward to meeting new characters and see what happens next to our little harem.
That was a close one. And what is up with the moody men? Cripes! Mel is slowly but surely growing up, but she also is sometimes a doormat. Let them chase her for once!
This series keeps getting better. I do wonder if Mel Wil add anymore to her harem or if any other shifters they might meet will just be friends she helped. And I have a couple theories on my hate going on with Hunter and I can't wait to see if I'm right. This author does a great job of giving you satisfactory endings while still keeping you curious and invest for future books. Another good book would recommend.
I loved this book more than the first 2! The relationship are all developing at different paces between Mel and her 3 men. While the relationships are all progressing, we get to see them deal with typical relationship problems, mainly miscommunication and misunderstanding.
We see the continued breakdown of Raz and Mel before they finally come together and apologize to one another. We see the blooming relationship between Mel and Hunter and then the apparent backward step towards the end, seems like miscommunication since neither one is talking to each other or addressing the tension or it’s cause. We see Connor and Mel continue to grow closer to only watch him try to push her away based on his self-worth and not being good enough for Mel. I loved the scene between Mel and Connor in the hospital when they reconciled and she explained to him her feelings and exactly what she though of his low opinion of himself and where he can shove it.
The relationship dynamics in this book is excellent and that is mostly what is focused on in this book which I loved reading. We did learn a little more about Mel and her abilities. So I can guess where the next book is going and I’m super curious to see it play out with another shifter that Mel and her men rescue.
The steam is super hot in this book. The little bit of M/M that is hinted at is making my drool for more!! Love some good steamy M/M action in my RHs.
Another fantastic book by the author. I highly recommend this entire series to everyone.
Freak Show and Abra Cadabra were brilliant books and Crystal has outdone herself with this third book in the series. I could not put it down for a moment because it just would not let me go. From the first page to the last, I felt as though I had a ringside seat for all the action. So much happened, I barely had time to draw breath. Mel is a wonderful character. So often the main female character is wishy-washy or petulant or childish or sulky but Mel is strong, brave, fearless, and tenacious. She loves with her whole heart and once you're in there, she'll never let you go, no matter what may befall you or what you might say or do. She loves Connor and he loves her but the course of true love definitely does not run smoothly in this book. Her feelings are also growing for the two other men she has met, but again there are hitches along the way. Connor is a stubborn stilt-walking saint who loves Mel and wants what is best for her, even if it hurts him. He suffers mentally and physically, and this time suffering in silence does not end well for him. He is such a caring, giving man and I love him and all his strength and frailties. Razvan is a damn delicious dragon. A tattoed bad boy, he is so loving and gentle with Mel and he won my heart too. He has his own secrets and has not been treated well in his past but his feelings for Mel are (forgive the tired cliché but it's true) making him a better man. He is more generous than I thought he would be, wanting Mel to be safe and happy no matter who makes her feel that way. Hunter, oh Hunter. He is a warm, wicked and wonderful wolf. Wicked with THAT sort of glint in his eye. And sex-on-legs. He obviously adores Mel but is shy at first and looks like butter wouldn't melt then suddenly he turns round and is a sexy bad boy in bed. And everywhere else. He is just downright lickable. I love all three of Mel's men, in case you can't tell, and was so glad to see more of Hunter and Raz in this book, figuratively and literally. The steamy scenes are just that, lots of explicit detail, lots of emotion, lots of everything. We finally learn what Mel is but she is only just coming into her gift and there is much more for us learn as she begins to understand what her abilities enable her to do. If you haven't read the first two books in the series, you definitely should because this book builds on everything that has gone before. Crystal is a fine author, a born storyteller, a weaver of magic, and this book is the best one of the series so far. I am positive that the series will only improve and I can't wait to see where Crystal takes Mel and her men next.
This is the third book in the series, so if you haven't read the first two there will be spoilers for those two books in my review - if you don't want that then stop reading please!!
Smoke and Mirrors picks up right after Abra Cadaba - really not much time has passed across the books at all, but I find myself forgetting that until it is mentioned in the book because I am more invested in the story. When I first read Freak Show I had no idea that things were going to turn paranormal - and though I was slightly disappointed at the time (because I was loving the seemingly "normal" characters and circus theme, and Connor being an amputee, etc.) but it didn't take long for me to embrace the shifters, and this book brings in even more of that aspect, as well as some interesting things about Melody. Sometimes Melody's reactions to things irritates me, and I have to remind myself she is only 18 years old to get over it. I like each of the heroes, especially Raz, and this book brings the heat - loved that aspect and am looking forward to more of it, especially the MM that is foreshadowed. I also am highly interested in Raz's past, and looking forward to learning more about a new character too. There were a few aspects of the writing that distracted me - one example bring places where I would normally see the word "had" or "have" either in full or contraction form but didn't in this book (possibly a style or character voice choice since in first person) - but not so much that I didn't like the story overall. I routinely want more detailed interactions between characters on page in RH books, and this book is no exception, but this series is better than a lot I have read in terms of that. Several story threads are lobbed up nicely for the next book, which a note at the end says will be out in January, and I will definitely be reading it.
ONE INCREDIBLY THRILLING EXPERIENCE!!! OMG! Wow! I'm not sure I have the right words to describe this little jewel. As always Crystal works her magic and doesn't disappoint. No holds barred, no pulling punches, no turning back. If you're looking for an action packed, fast paced, hard hitting, nailbiting, heart pounding, pulse racing, page turning dynamo that's as riveting as it is captivating. Congrats my friends you've found it. All the drama, fear, heartache, mystery, danger and suspense increases steadily as the tension spirals while the plot thickens. With twists and turns, ups and downs, unexpected circumstances and unpredictable surprises around every corner make for one thrilling experience. The characters and scenes are written with such realism it's easy to picture each scenario as they play off one another in perfect balance. The chemistry is white hot, off the charts, explosive. The characters are complex and believable with such depth and individuality it's easy to relate. The scenes are so graphically detailed and descriptive it really makes the storyline pop. I totally recommend this series, you can't go wrong. Crystal did a phenomenal job bringing this read to life flawlessly. Fantastic job Crystal, thanks for sharing this little treasure with us.
This is third book in the Harem of Freaks series, and they must be read in order. Overall, the series is fun, unique, and I absolutely love it.
This book had a lot more character development than the last, which was great. We get a little more history for Connor, some new information for Melody, and we get a good bit of history for Hunter (the saved 'Wolf Man') and Raz, the newest character addition.
The story line itself is taking off and it's so enjoyable. Every time I sit down to read, I don't want to put it down. Each book has its own story, but then the is this overall story arc that each book is progressing through.
I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as the last book. Not that the story wasn't still great because it was. I'm completely enjoying the series as a whole. I just felt as though Melody was a tad more... I guess whiny, you could say. She's untrusting of men, in general, because of her past, but her complete lack of faith in ther guys and her whining and crying over it was just a little annoying in this book. Not nearly enough to have me quit because, as I mentioned, the story/series as a whole is awesome. It's so different from anything I've read before and I love that. I simply enjoyed this book a little less. I'm still ready to read the next book!
This series is seriously everything. I both love and hate Crystal for this particular book. She really puts the reader’s emotions through the ringer. Several times I wanted to message her and ask her why she hates her readers so much.
This book delves in to some deep emotions and past traumas. Several times I found myself crying and upset with the characters. It’s not an easy journey for any of them but they’re taking it the best they can.
Crystal has done an amazing job at spinning this tale and I was glad to be along for the ride. While this installment doesn’t focus as much on the carnival aspect it does bring a new depth to each of these characters. A depth that was much needed for each of them to slowly start healing.
Several times I wanted to message Crystal and ask her why she hates her readers so much. However, I know from reading her other books to trust the process. She puts her characters through the ringer but always gives them the happy endings they deserve and I can’t wait to continue this journey.
I still feel like nothing is happening in this series but now at least I have figured out what the problem is.
All the MCs issues so far are non-issues, they are mundane. There is no conflict, no bad guys to contest with, no internal struggles, no plot, no twists, just trifle. Its just a normal boring life. Going to work, financial problems, complaining and being frustrated about general mistreatment/abuse of shapeshifters in the circus sector and MMCs with irritating, irratic mood swings. Even their pasts are boring, though they can't seem to stop whining about them. So far each bookend is setting us up for meeting the next harem candidate, with so much promise that has failed to deliver every single time.
If you are wondering why I am still continuing with the series, the answer is, it has potential and with each next book I am thinking maybe finally this will be it. But so far MEH.
This book was a journey. All three of the guys end up grumpy at some point in this book; poor Mel can’t get a frigging break from it. Aside from frustrating men, the book is still action-packed, sexy, and draws you in. I hadn’t had a chance to read it when it first came out, and I didn’t get to read it until book 4 was already out. I was so happy that I had another book to go straight onto from this one. This author is so good at wrapping you in her world and making you want to stay. In this book, we also see that the circus is a little bit not the main focus. It’s still there; it’s still the main setting for where the characters live. My personal opinion is that this book is a turning point for the series, but it was very subtly done, and I’m very excited to see what it might mean for the series. Straight onto book 4!
Harem of Freaks has seriously captured my interest in a way that once I started I could not stop (and thankfully I was late to the bandwagon and had a few books to read at one time). While I enjoyed Smoke and Mirrors, this book felt shorter than the previous two in the series. This book also lost me a little in that I felt there was a lot of unnecessary fighting and overreaction to things happening, causing a lot of stupid behaviour.
We did have an interesting development of powers in this book, as Melody begins to learn about her destiny as a Shaman. Because of these powers we are introduced to a new character that we know nothing about, including a name, type of shifter, or their location. But this character is introduced at the last moment, making the reader want to read Jump Through Fire to learn more about them.
It definitely enjoyed the world the author created and how each one of the characters in the harem had different personalities and their own insecurities and such. Personally I thought the 6 books could be condensed down to 3, but whatever, more money for the author.
It kept reminding you that the main character was 18, but I think it kept reminding you of this because none of these characters seemed like the age they were (18-23ish). I don’t know if the author wanted the characters to be younger for a New Adult type of age group or what, but they all seemed too mature to be in that age range. Which I’m totally cool with because I ignore that it kept saying she was 18 and just read like she was mid 20’s or so.
Drama. Smut. Imperfect characters. Bisexual relationships. Overall pretty fun set of books.
On continues the crazy story of Melody and her growing harem. Not gonna lie I wanted more plot this time around. Melody came off pretty annoying and more immature than I thought she was in earlier books. Prone to temper tantrums and sobbing fits that were entirely unnecessary for the scene. In the previous book while at the faire, she sees Raz preparing to swallow a sword and she freaks out. Unfortunately her southern bumpkin persona became too much and her youth really showed. Melody is definitely not an old soul as she has sooooo much about life still to learn. We do learn more about Melody not registering as fully human and have a bit more relationship development but plot fell to the sideline. Hoping the next book will pick up, Melody will grow up and everyone can get off the woe is me bandwagon, it’s exhausting.
Well that was a whirl wind of emotions. Holy sweet baby monkeys, my heart was in my throat a lot. Between Connor's pain and PTSD, Raz and Mel's issues and Hunter bing the only stable one (well kind of, he irritated me at the end a little hopefully that gets worked out in the next book) everything feels like its going to fall a part. Then Raz surprised me so did Hunter what with that one scene oh boy that was yummy! I know everything I'm writing is cryptic but a lot happened in this book and I feel like if I described an of the situations it would be a spoiler so I'm just going with I love it. The guys are frickin sexy, there are some steamy scenes and some heartbreaking ones and some that almost making it all better. I absolutely can not wait until January for the next book!
This is the third book in the Harem of Freaks series and each book just gets better and better! I read this whole book in one sitting and now I am very very eagerly awaiting book four! I'm really glad the author doesn't keep us waiting too long in between books, she is a writing powerhouse. In this book, Mel and her guys are trying to figure out how they all fit in the relationship while battling real life problems, life in and out of the carnival, interacting with all the shifters and what exactly Mel is herself, and more. There are enough storylines and character dynamics that are all balanced so nicely that I couldn't stop turning the page until I had finished. I very much recommend this series!

My girl finally did it! She found the secret of what she is! Now, to go about how to use it and save the shifters….
These guys keep going hot and cold on her. I’m getting frustrated for her! I feel like we are finally get more to what is actually happening. (The point of this story.) I am enjoying this storyline but 3 books in and all we know is their romance and that humans are mean to shifters. And theirs a 4th mate somewhere being used much like Wolfman was in the beginning.
I’m going to keep reading, cuz hello it’s Crystal Ash…but I’m just not as invested as I wish I was. I wish we knew more than what we do at this point.
*Overall 4/5 *Heat? 4/5 *Romance 2/5 *First person POV *MFMM Romance so far
